Hugh M. "Monty" Jolley

Hugh Montgomery Jolley, III “Monty”, 56, of 5208 Virginia Dare Trail, Kitty, Hawk, NC, died Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, NC after a long battle for 5½ years with pulmonary cancer. He was born in Craven County, NC, the son of Audrey H. and C. O. McMullan of Elizabeth City and the late Hugh M. Jolley, Jr.

Mr. Jolley was a graduate of Elizabeth City High School and Western Carolina University having earned a B. A. and later a B. S. degree in Education at Elizabeth City State University. He was a sales representative, past president of the Elizabeth City Jaycees, a member of the First Christian Church, and taught in the Camden and Currituck County School Systems.

Other survivors include a sister, Wanda McMullan of Elizabeth City, NC; a daughter, Dana Michelle Collier and husband Brian of Falls Church, VA; a step grandfather, Walton Straley of Kitty Hawk, NC; and a truly devoted, loving, caring fiancee, Carol Umphlett of the home. Mr. Jolley is also survived by a large family consisting of uncles, aunts, and cousins.

A graveside service will be conducted on Friday, October 4, 2002 at 3:00 pm at Old Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. Glenn Brigman and the Rev. Eugene McLawhorn officiating. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service and at other times at the home of C. O. and Audrey McMullan, 801 West Colonial Avenue, Elizabeth City, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Christian Church Building Fund, 701 Parsonage Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909, or to the American Cancer Society, c\o Hazel Anderson, 106 S. Ashe Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Samuel Jolly, Jr.

Col. Ret. Samuel B. Jolly, Jr., 72, of Swan Circle, Point Harbor, NC, died Monday morning, November 25, 2002, at his residence. He was born in Wilmington, NC to the late Samuel B. and Adelle Singletary Jolly. Col. Jolly retired from the U. S. Air Force after 24 years of service; he was a member and deacon of the Powells Point Baptist Church and was very active in the Chowan Baptist Association.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jo Ann Maultsby Jolly; two sons, Stephen A. Jolly of Virginia Beach, VA and Joseph S. Jolly of Richmond, VA; a daughter, Jennifer Marsh of Chapin, SC; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, November 27, 2002, at 2:00pm in the Powells Point Baptist Church by Revs. Herbert Hemingway and Eugene McLawhorn. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery with military honors. The family suggests memorial gifts may be made to Powells Point Baptist Church, P. O. Box 328, Powells Point, NC 27966 or to the Lower Currituck Co. Volunteer Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 486, Grandy, NC 27932. Twiford’s Funeral Home, 405 E. Charles C. Jones

Elizabeth City, NC - Charles Carvin Jones, 78, of 101 Bruce Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, February 7, 2003 at the Brian Center in Hertford, NC. He was born in James City, NC to the late Leonard and Lucy Gerard Jones and was the husband of Jeannette McNally Jones of the home. He was a retired supervisor with the Norfolk Detention Home, a retired first sergeant with the U. S. Army having served during World War II, a Pearl Harbor survivor, a recipient of two Bronze Stars and one Silver Star, and a life member of the V. F. W.

Besides his wife, Mr. Jones is survived by one daughter, Jennifer Tanner of Elizabeth City, NC; two step sons, Michael Rossow of Centralia, WA and John Rossow of Elizabeth City, NC; one brother, Clifton Jones of Norfolk, VA; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to one’s favorite charity. Twiford’s Northside Chapel, 1115 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.

Gladys C. Wright Jones

Shiloh, NC - Gladys C. Wright Jones, 83, of 181 Wickham Road, Shiloh, NC died Tuesday, February 18, 2003 at her residence. She was born in Castleberry, AL to the late Felix and Alice Wright and was the wife of Horace B. Jones of the home. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Jones is survived by two daughters, Myrtis Thompson of Monroeville, AL and MaryJo Hoover of Shiloh, NC; one son, Woodrow Oliver of Orlando, FL; 22 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and several great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, James A. Jones.

A funeral service will be conducted in Jacksonville, FL at a later date. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of local arrangements.

Carlton Parker Jones

Elizabeth City, NC - Mr. Carlton Parker Jones, age 76, of 1925 Colington Road, Colington, NC died Friday, March 07, 2003 at Guardian Care Nursing Home. He was born in Bertie County, NC; son of the late Ruben and Nancy Parker Jones. He was a member of the William Clarence Jackson Post # 6060 of V. F. W. and was a veteran, having served in the U. S. Navy, during World War II.

Mr. Jones is survived by five daughters, Carlette Purden of Edenton, NC, Francine Sanders of Elizabeth City, NC, Jane Beasley of Colington, NC, Rita Navratil of Fairlawn, NJ, and Judy Loughin of Belton, SC; a son, Hillary Jones of Leland, NC; twelve grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and the world’s best brother-in-law, Frank Holcombe. He was predeceased by a son, R. Carlton Jones and a sister, Frances Holcombe.

A graveside service will be conducted on Monday, March 10, 2003 at 2:00 PM in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Charles McKenzie officiating. Military honors will be performed by the William Clarence Jackson Post # 6060 of V. F. W.

Howard C. Jones

Howard C. Jones, 74, of 507 Narrow Shores Road, Aydlett, NC, died peacefully at his residence Monday, April 28, 2003, after several courageous battles with heart disease and cancer. He was born in Perquimans County, NC, raised in Elizabeth City and resided in Aydlett, NC. Mr. Jones was the son of the late Henry and Maggie Riddick Jones and was the husband of Rosalie Doxey Jones. He was a retired pipe fitter for the Norfolk Ship Building and Dry Docks, a member of the Sharon United Methodist Church and a former member of the National Guard. Howard loved his family, friends and church and was especially proud of being a grandfather. He loved the outdoors and was a true sportsman, enjoying golf, fishing and gardening. Howard was a generous man who found much pleasure in sharing the vegetables he raised in his garden with all of those in his community.

Besides his wife, Mr. Jones is survived by a daughter, Debbie Stallings and husband, Ken, of Shiloh, NC; two sons, Keith Jones and wife, Donna, of Burlington, NC and Bill Jones and wife, Tamara, of Southern Shores, NC; two sisters, Bessie Wall of Elizabeth City, NC and Mabel Long of Comer, GA; one brother, William Jones of Elizabeth City, NC and three grandchildren, Pam Ross, Andrea Ross both of Apex, NC and Will Jones of Burlington, NC.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at 11:00am in the Sharon United Methodist Church by Revs. Sherman Guthrie and Gene Goldfinch. Burial will follow in the Doxey Family Cemetery, Aydlett, NC. The family suggests memorial gifts be made to the Sharon United Methodist Church, P. O. Box #182, Poplar Branch, NC 27965. Sidney Jones

MANTEO, NC - SIDNEY AUSTIN JONES, 89, died Monday, August 11, 2003, at her residence. Mrs. Jones, a life time resident of Manteo, was a retired secretary for the Manns Harbor Shipyard and was a member of First Assembly of God, Manteo. She was the daughter of the late Homer Treadwell Austin and the late Orphia Midgett Austin and was also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Jones, Sr.

Mrs. Jones is survived by a daughter, Barbara Jones Daniels and husband, Bob of Manteo; a son, Ralph Jones, Jr. and wife, Pam, also of Manteo; four grandchildren, Steve Daniels and wife, Debbie, Cheryl Wiggins and husband, Ben, Lisa Lewis and husband, Richard, and Amy Jones Snell and husband, Michael; six great-grandchildren, Lisa and Barry Daniels, Cameron and Brandon Wiggins and Ryan and Sidney Lewis; and two great-great grandchildren, Taylor and Katelynn Morrisette; a sister, Hilda Austin Williams of Lewes, DE and special niece, Estelle Wilson of Manteo.

A celebration of Mrs. Jones’ life will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 at 11:00 am with Rev. Ron Denham officiating. Burial will be in the Manteo Cemetery. The family will be at the home of Barbara and Bob Daniels, 910 Burnside Road.

Thomas Ray Jones

Camden, NC - Thomas Ray Jones, age 64, of 662 N. Hwy 343, Camden, NC, died Saturday, September 6, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Camden County, son of the late Oscar and Hettie D. Jones, and was the loving husband of Sandra Archbell Jones for 43 years of the residence. He was retired from telecommunications at Sprint Telephone Company where he was a dedicated employee for 39 years and was a member of Geneva Baptist Church. After his retirement he devoted much of his time to his sons business J & J Wholesale in Camden.

Besides his wife, Mr. Jones is survived by: two sons, Donnie Jones and friend Lynn Merritt of Camden, NC, and Stevie Jones; and three grandchildren, Gregory Mark Jones, Bryan Andrew Jones and Julia Kathleen Jones. A sister in law Katherine Foye and a niece Jennifer of Westbrook Maine and four loving Aunts.

A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, September 9, 2003, at 11:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Mitchell Harrison and Rev. Mike Gothard officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday September 8 from 7:00 to 8:00 PM, and at other times at the residence. ALLEN RAY JONES
Native of Pasquotank County, NC

Allen Ray Jones, age 69 of Pinellas Park, FL, died in a nursing home in Seminole, FL, Wednesday, October 08, 2003. Mr. Jones was born in Elizabeth City, NC, to Iola Cooper Jordan of Elizabeth City, NC and the late Horace Jones. He was a veteran of the US Air Force.

Besides his mother, Mr. Jones is survived a daughter, Lisa Jones of Palm Harbor, FL; a son, Thomas Jones of Elizabeth City; a sister, Iris Bundy of Elizabeth City, NC; and a brother Wayne Jones of OK; and the mother of his children, Darlene M. Wamble of Elizabeth City, NC. He was predeceased by a sister, Lorayne J. Winslow; and two brothers, Maylon D. Jones and Herbert A. Jones.

Funeral services will be Sunday, October 12, 2003, at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM, immediately after the service in the lobby of the funeral home, and at other times at the home of his sister, Iris Bundy, 848 Well Field Road, Elizabeth City, NC. Virginia Garrett Jones
Native of Perquimans County, NC

Virginia Garrett Jones, age 87, of Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was born in Perquimans County, NC, daughter of the late William Henry and Nettie Umphlett Garrett and was the widow of William Earl Jones, Sr.. She was a member of First Christian Church and retired from the Elizabeth City Hosiery Mill.

Mrs. Jones is survived by three daughters, Gail LaCroix and Annette Reel both of Elizabeth City, NC, and Brenda Williams of Kenly, NC; two sons, William Earl Jones, Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA, and John Paul Jones of Alexanderia, VA; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, November 28, 2003 at 11:00 am in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Jerry Burton officiating. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. Following the service the family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. James Reel, 506 Planters Run, Elizabeth City, NC. Gertrude Jones

Camden, NC - Gertrude Jordan Jones, age 88, of 136 Palmer Road, Camden, NC, died Wednesday, February 18, 2004 in Sentara Barco Nursing Home. She was born in Camden, NC, and was the daughter of the late William Parson Jordan and Sophia Berry Jordan, and was the widow of William Burwell Jones. Mrs. Jones was a retired sales clerk for McClean and McCroy Department Store, and was a former member of Shiloh Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for several years.

She is survived by one son, William Howard Jones and his wife, Brenda of Camden, NC; one sister, Jean J. Forbes of Shawboro, NC; three brothers, Alton Jordan of Burlington, NC, Dewey Jordan of Mobile, AL, and George Jordan of Shiloh, NC; one granddaughter, Renee Jones Crider and her husband, Travis of Camden, NC; one great grandchild, Blair Crider; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Myrtle J. Copeland, and two brothers, Monford Jordan and Elwood Jordan.

A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, February 21, 2004, at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dave Combs officiating. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery. The family will be at the residence of her granddaughter, Renee and Travis Crider, 245 Perkins Road, Camden, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Phyllis Davis Jones
Pasquotank County Native

Phyllis Davis Jones, age 68, of 8552 Pepperwood Drive, Estero, FL, died Tuesday, March 2, 2004 at Winslow Memorial Nursing Home. Mrs. Jones, a native of Pasquotank County, NC, was the widow of Andrew Lewis, Jr., and Robert Jones, and the daughter of the late Lemuel Clinton Davis and Maude Caroon Davis. She retired after twenty-three years as office manager for the NAFA USCG Base Exchange in Elizabeth City, and a member of Berea Baptist Church, the Military Officers Association, and The Red Hat Society.

Mrs. Jones is survived by a daughter Cathy Lewis Hooker, and her husband Melvin Hooker, Jr., of Elizabeth City, NC; a grandson, Justin Lewis Hooker; a nephew, William “Bill” Thompson, and his wife Elaine, of Cummings, GA; two nieces, Lynda Long Givens and Lisa Long both of GA; two great nephews, Patton Givens and Josh Hart; and two great nieces, Tabatha Givens and Jennifer Hart. She was predeceased by a sister, Audrey Davis Long, and a great nephew, Joey Hart.

A graveside funeral service will be Saturday, March 6, 2004, at 2:00 PM in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Glenn Greenway officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of the daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Melvin Hooker, Jr., 103 Rhonda Road, Elizabeth City, NC. Mary Lou Jones
Native of Tyrrell County

Mary Lou Jones, age 72, of 901 Halstead Blvd., Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, June 7, 2004, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Jones was a native of Tyrrell County, NC, and the widow of Lester Ray Jones. She was the daughter of the late Luke M. Maitland and Fannie Belinda Brickhouse Maitland. She was a member of Fountain of Life Pentecostal Holiness Church and a homemaker.

Mrs. Jones is survived by a son, Jonathan A. “Joe” Jones of Elizabeth City, NC; a sister, Nancy Gladys Patrick of Elizabeth City, NC; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Rev. Everette Harper and the Rev. Ray Archer officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:00 PM Tuesday afternoon and at other times at the residence of the sister, Nancy Gladys Patrick, 215 East Broad Street, Elizabeth City, NC. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Paul Original Free Will Baptist Church Piano Fund, 1020 Cedar Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Lawrence Anderson

KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC - LAWRENCE MICHAEL ANDERSON, 70, of Kill Devil Hills, NC and formerly of Fairfax, VA, died of brain cancer on Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at his home. Larry was born in Chicago, IL to the late Marie Baumgartner and Monroe Anderson. He retired from the Department of the Navy, Naval Sea Systems Command, Arlington, VA as a Technical Data Management Specialist after 13 years of service. He enlisted in the US Navy on October 19, 1950 in Pittsburgh, PA and served for 3 ½ years during the Korean Conflict on a destroyer. He was discharged as an Electronics Technician, Third Class. Larry attended Salem College in WV and George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. He was a member of the American Legion Post 162, Lorton, VA since April 30, 1970, a member of the Outer Banks Gun Club since November 1995, and was a member of the Outer Banks Senior Fellowship.

Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Janet Donley Anderson; a son, Michael L. Anderson and wife, Amy of Virginia Beach, VA; three daughters, Cynthia Hall of Norfolk, VA, Deanna Buchanan and husband, John of Stafford, VA, and Judy Reynolds and husband, Chip of Kill Devil Hills, NC; five grandchildren, Vinnie Hall, Melissa and Christopher Anderson, Travis and Shannon Buchanan.

A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews by the Sea Episcopal Church on Saturday, April 17, 2004 at 3:00 pm with the Rev. Charles E.B. Gill officiating. A reception will be held at the Bay Cliff Claw Club following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Albemarle Hospice, POB 189, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 or to St. Andrews by the Sea, POB 445, Nags Head, NC 27959.

William Earl Jones, Sr.
Native of Tyrrell County, NC

William Earl Jones, Sr., age 88, of 114 Lakeside Apartments, Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, January 5, 2003 at Guardian Care Nursing Home. He was born in Tyrrell County, NC, son of the late William Albert and Elvie Ainsley Jones, and the husband of Virginia Garrett Jones of Elizabeth City, NC. Mr. Jones was retired from the U.S. Army and National Guard, a member of the William Clarence Jackson, Post 6060 of the V.F.W., and worked as an independent heating and air contractor.

Besides his wife, Mr. Jones is survived by three daughters, Gail LaCroix and Annette Reel both of Elizabeth City, NC, and Brenda Williams of Kenly, NC; two sons, William Earl Jones, Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA, and John Paul Jones of Alexandria, VA; five grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, January 7, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. Following the service the family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home. Military honors will be conducted at the funeral home by the William Clarence Jackson, Post 6060 of the V.F.W. The family will be at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. James Reel, 506 Planters Run, Elizabeth City, NC.

Timothy Jones, Sr.

Moyock, NC - Timothy Robert Jones, Sr., age 46, of 117 Willow Drive, Moyock, NC, died Monday, March 1, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Jones, a 13 year veteran of the US Navy, was an avid recreational fisherman and known to his friends as “Bassman.” In the past he had been an active member, president and secretary of County Bassmasters Fishing Club.

Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Amy J. Jones of the residence; his parents, Thomas and Sondra Jones of Moyock; three sons, Timothy Robert Jones, Jr. of Moyock, NC, Robert Thomas Jones, of Gulf Port, MS, and Andrew Finnegan Jones of Moyock, NC; two brothers, Thomas Jones of Moyock, NC, and William Jones of OH; one sister, Suonna Cole and her husband Robert of Massillon, OH; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, 404 Jessup Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Evelyn Marie Jordan

Evelyn Marie Jordan, age 77, of 170 North Spot Road, Powells Point, NC, died Saturday, January 4, 2003 at Sentara Barco Nursing Center in Barco, NC. She was born in Currituck County, NC, the daughter of the late Noah and Dora Mercer Harris, and was the widow of William Horace Jordan, Sr. Mrs. Jordan was a homemaker and a member of the Jarvisburg Church of Christ.

Mrs. Jordan is survived by two daughters, Joyce Kight, of Halifax, NC, and Judy Payment of Grandy, NC; five sons, William Horace Jordan, Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC, Terry Wayne Jordan, Sr., Danny Lee Jordan, and Gary Wayne Jordan all of Powells Point, NC, and Larry Lee Jordan of Southern Shores, NC; one sister, Lenora Page of Poquoson, VA; eleven grand children; and three great grand children. She was pre-deceased by one brother, Claude Harris.

Funeral services will be Monday, January 6, 2003, at 2:00 PM at Jarvisburg Church of Christ with Minister Dennis Crehan officiating. Burial will follow in Poplar Branch Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence. Jon Jackson

Jon Ambrose Jackson, age 13, of 691 Firetower Road, Elizabeth City, NC, left us too fast – too soon while enjoying life on his bike, Friday, May 28, 2004. Jon, born in Chesapeake, VA, was the son of James Jeffery “Jeff” and Karen Spence Jackson of the residence.

Jon was an eighth grade student at Elizabeth City Middle School and attended Ramoth Gilead Baptist Church. He enjoyed horse-back riding, spending time with his family and friends at his brother’s go-kart racing events, and cruising on his motorcycle with brothers, cousins, and friends.

Besides his parents he is survived by two brothers, Jared Jackson and Jed Jackson both of the residence; paternal grandmother, Annie Jackson of Elizabeth City, NC; maternal grandmother, Sophia Spence of Elizabeth City, NC; many loved uncles, aunts, cousins, friends, and special teachers; and his pet cat Oreo.

Funeral services will be Monday, May 31, 2004, at 11:00 AM at Ramoth Gilead Baptist Church with the Rev. Glenn Greenway and the Rev. Toni Wood officiating. Burial will follow in Whitney Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence and memorial donations may be made to Ramoth Gilead Baptist Church, 1308 School House Road, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, is in charge of arrangements.

Minnie Long Jacobs

Elizabeth City, NC - Minnie Long Jacobs, age 86, of 1328 N. Road St., Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday, May 08, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Pasquotank Co., NC; daughter of the late Richard Fred and Margaret Ranhorn Long and was the widow of Elliott Whitehurst Jacobs. She was a member of City Road United Methodist Church and loved her family and flowers.

Mrs. Jacobs is survived by a daughter, Patricia Jacobs Brown of Shawboro, NC; two sons, Luther Ray Jacobs and his wife, Linda of Elizabeth City, NC and Elliott W. “Rusty” Jacobs, Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Camden; a sister, Martha Long Gaskins of Elizabeth City, NC; seven grandsons; five great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters and seven brothers.

A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, May 10, 2003 at 4:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC with Rev. Glenn Greenway officiating. Burial will be in the Whitehurst Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service and at other times at the residence of Luther and Linda Jacobs, 129 Brickhouse Lane, Elizabeth City, NC.

Twiford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
