Erich Jahn

Frisco, NC - Erich W. Jahn, 53, left us too soon to be with the Lord on May 31, 2004. He was taken suddenly by an apparent heart attack. Erich was born on November 10, 1950 in Hof, Germany. After serving in the German Army he was employed as an administrative sales representative for a chocolate company and a part-time taxi driver in Hof. He arrived here in America in 1986. He was currently employed by Outer Beaches Realty.

Erich was preceded in death by his parents, Hans and Ella Jahn; one brother, Heinz Jahn, and a step-son Glenn N. Spiess; he is survived by his loving wife Marga of 18 years, his two sisters, Inge Montes of Hanover, MD, Marga Hassler of Rastadt, Germany, and two brothers, Richard Jahn and Hugo Jahn both of Hof, Germany and their families. He is survived by one son, Oliver Jahn of Hof, Germany and one step-son Mark S. Spiess and his family of Frisco, and one daughter-in-law, Vickie Davis and her family of Greenville, NC; Erich had 4 step-grandchildren and one step-great grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.

A viewing will take place on Monday, June 7th from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM and a memorial service on Tuesday, June 8th at 7:00 PM, both at Cape Hatteras Baptist Church in Frisco.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Twiford’s Island Chapel, Hatteras, is assisting the family with these arrangements.

Shirley James

Elizabeth City, NC - Shirley Henderson James of Elizabeth City, NC went to be with the Lord on August 8, 2003 after a long illness.

Born in Motherwell, Scotland, she was a homemaker and the widow of Vernon Grant James, Jr. She was baptized in the Manse Road Presbyterian Church of Scotland and a Born Again Christian for many years.

Mrs. James is survived by a son, Vernon Grant James, III of the home; two daughters, Dallas J. Lane of Elizabeth City, NC and Jacquelynne Booth of Virginia Beach, VA; and two grandchildren, Charles T. Lane, Jr. and Amanda Lynn Lane.

Mrs. James will be cremated. No services are planned at this time. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.

Thelma Luton Sanders James
Native of Pasquotank County

Thelma Luton Sanders James, age 86, of 1301 Salem Church Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, October 8, 2003, at her residence. Mrs. James was a native of Pasquotank County and the widow of Thomas F. Sanders and Vernon G. James. She was the daughter of the late John Herbert Luton and Gladys Keaton Luton. She was a retired cashier from College of the Albemarle and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She loved life. She loved her family, friends, and her home. She will be missed so very much.

Mrs. James is survived by a daughter, Joyce S. Beutler of Mapleton, UT; a son, Alan Sanders of Clarmont, NC; three sisters, Martha Luton Lingard of Salt Lake City, UT, Ann Barrow of Dunn, NC, and Mattie Marie Meads of Elizabeth City, NC; two brothers, Relfe K. Luton and Earl A. Luton both of Elizabeth City, NC; twelve grandchildren; and twenty-one great grand- children.

Funeral services will be Friday, October 10, 2003, at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with Bishop David Pritchard officiating. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 at the funeral home, immediately after the service in the lobby of the funeral home, and at other times at the residence.

Dezzie James
Native of Tyrrell Co., NC

Dezzie Gray James, age 87, of 1003 Austin Lee Circle, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, November 1, 2003, at Sentara Barco Nursing Home, Mrs. James was born in Tyrrell County, NC, daughter of the late John Gray and Lena Brickhouse Gray, and was the widow of Hoyt Bright James, Sr. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Mrs. James is survived by: one son Terry James and wife Rose of Elizabeth City, NC, one sister Mary Bright of Elizabeth City, NC; and one grandson Brian Andrew James of Elizabeth City, NC. Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. James was predeceased by one son Hoyt Bright James, Jr.; two sisters Barbara Sawyer and Affie Layden; and two brothers Theron Gray and Nelson Gray.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, November 4, 2003, at 11:00 AM in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home on Monday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.

Diana "Dee Dee" James

Manteo, NC - Diana Dean “Dee Dee” James, 59, of Manteo, NC died Tuesday, July 6, 2004 at Chesapeake General Hospital. She was born in Washington D.C. to the late James Edward and Clara Sanderlin James. She was a librarian at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island, a member of St. Andrews By-the-Sea Episcopal Church, and a member of the Parrothead Club.

Ms. James is survived by two daughters, Stephanie Claire Wilson of Richmond, VA and Allison Dean Haynes of Atlanta, GA. She was preceded in death by a brother, James Edward “Laddie” James, Jr.

A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, July 10, 2004 at 1:00 PM at St. Andrews By-the-Sea Episcopal Church by the Rev. Charles E.B. Gill. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island, P.O. Box 967, Manteo, NC 27954. Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, NC is in charge of arrangements.

Mary James

Mrs. Mary Jane Spruill James, age 85, of 1700 West Ehringhaus Street, died Friday, August 6, 2004, at Winslow Nursing Home. Mrs. James, a native of Bertie County, was the daughter of the late Edward C. Spruill and Bettie Sue Sewell Spruill, and the widow of Alvin J. James.

Mrs. James was a graduate of the University of North Carolina, Greensboro and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority. A retired school teacher, she taught at Sheep-Harney and Central Elementary Schools, and retired after thirty eight years of teaching. After retirement she devoted much time to her garden club work and the beautification of Elizabeth City, NC. She was selected for Who’s Who of American Women Personalities of the South. She was a member of the Flower Lovers’ Garden Club and served as president for twenty years. She was active as a lifetime member of the Garden Club of North Carolina and served on the Board of Governors of Elizabethan Gardens for Sixteen years.

She is survived by a cousin, Jane Revelle, and her husband Dillon, of Suffolk, VA.

A funeral service will be Tuesday, August 10, 2004, at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC with the Rev. David O. Leary officiating. A graveside funeral service will be held Tuesday at 3:00 P.M. at Edgewood Cemetery in Windsor, NC. The family will receive friends immediately after the funeral service in the lobby of the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the charity one’s choice. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Vernon Grant James, Sr.

Elizabeth City, NC - Vernon Grant James, Sr., 92 of Pasquotank County, NC died Monday, October 21, 2002 at his residence. He was born in Pasquotank Co., NC, son of the late John Calvin and Fanny Coppersmith James and was the husband of Thelma Sanders James. He was a charter member of the NC 4-H Honor Club, The NC House of Representatives for 26 years, Salem Baptist Church, Eureka Lodge 317 AF & AM, Elizabeth City York Bodies and Sudan Shrine Temple of New Bern, NC.

Besides his wife, Mr. James is survived by a daughter, Joyce Beutler of Mapleton, UT; a son, Alan Sanders of Hickory, North Carolina; two sisters, Jemima Markham and Irene Roberson, both of Elizabeth City, NC; a brother, William James of Winfall, NC; twelve grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Selma Harris James; two sons, John Thomas James, Sr. and Vernon Grant James, Jr.; four sisters, Vivian Daniels, Louise Morrisette, Myra Trueblood, and Elizabeth Williamson and two brothers, Rueben James and Ernest James.

A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, October 24 at 10:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC with Rev. Michael Jordan officiating. Burial will follow in the Salem Baptist Church Cemetery. A memorial service will held at the Fine Arts Center of ECSU at 4:00 PM Thursday. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, it was Mr. James’s wish that any donations be made to the Vernon James Scholarship, c/o 4-H Development Fund, Box 7645, Raleigh, NC 27695-7645.

Robert Jankech

Frisco, NC - Robert Patrick Jankech, 67, of 50175 Blackbeard’s Court, Frisco, NC, died Tuesday, February 3, 2004 at his residence. He was born in Perth Amboy, NJ, son of the late Ludwig and Mary Pollack Jankech. He was an owner/operator of an Arnold Bread Franchise, an avid fisherman, a member of the Outer Banks Angler's Club, a volunteer for Fish With a Ranger, and was a former employee of the Frisco Fishing Pier.

Mr. Jankech is survived by his wife, Judith Betcher Jankech of the residence; a daughter, Lisa Durrua and husband Kenneth of Point Pleasant, NJ; a granddaughter, Arielle Durrua of Point Pleasant, NJ; two sisters, Maryanne Kneipher of Plainfield, NJ and Cynthia Jankech of Somerset, NJ; a brother, Louis Jankech of Phillipsburg, NJ; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cape Hatteras Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Robert Greg Jeffries

Elizabeth City, NC - R. Greg Jeffries, age 46, of 1818 River Road, died Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Atlanta, GA, son of Robert George and Frances Russell Jeffries of Elizabeth City, NC. He worked as a construction worker, and was a member of Blackwell Baptist Church.

Mr. Jeffries is survived by two brothers, Mark Alan Jeffries and his wife Arlene, Tracy Randall Jeffries and his wife Laurie both of Elizabeth City, NC; two nieces, Ashton and Victoria Jeffries; two nephews, Jared and Christopher Jeffries, all of Elizabeth City, NC.

A graveside service will be Friday, May 23, 2003 at 11:00 AM at New Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Bob Crisp officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, and at other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Albemarle Hospice, PO Box 189, Elizabeth City, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Russell V. Jenkins

RUSSELL VANDER VEER JENKINS, 78, of Southern Shores, NC died Friday, July 11, 2003 at Outer Banks Hospital, Nags Head, NC. Mr. Jenkins, born in Irvington, NJ, was a retired engineer with Durrex Company. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, the American Legion Post 26 and was a retired Volunteer with the Southern Shores Fire Dept. Mr. Jenkins served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII in the China Burma Campaign. He was the son of the late Russell and Gladys Sims Jenkins.

Mr. Jenkins is survived by his wife Gladys Lauer Jenkins of the residence; a son, Randall Jenkins and wife, Tamara of Lincoln Park, NJ; a sister-in law and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Clinton Spahn of Southern Shores, NC.

Internment of cremains will be in the Southern Shores Cemetery on Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at 10:00 am, followed by a memorial service to be held at Grace Lutheran by the Sea at 11:00 am with Rev. Albert Isler officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, POB 1356, Nags Head, NC 27959.

Bertrand C. Jennette

Bertrand Culpepper Jennette, age 83, of 1107 W. Williams Circle, Elizabeth City, NC died Friday, September 26, 2003 at Guardian Care Nursing Home. He was born in Pasquotank Co., NC; son of the late Warren H. and Margaret Culpepper Jennette and was the widower of Geraldine Jackson Jennette and Lois Pippen Jennette, respectively. He was the owner of Jennette’s Produce and a veteran, having served in the U. S. Navy.

Mr. Jennette is survived by two sons, B. Culpepper Jennette, Jr. and wife, April of Shawboro, NC and Carter J. Jennette of Currituck, NC; and three grandchildren, Hannah Jennette, Sarah Jane Jennette, and Michael Worsham.

A graveside service will be conducted on Monday, September 29, 2003 at 2:00 PM in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Clyde Denny officiating. Military honors will be presented by the William Clarence Jackson Post # 6060 of the V. F. W. Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 401, Elizabeth City, NC 27907 or one’s favorite charity. The family will be at the residence.

Virginia C. Jennings

Elizabeth City, NC - Virginia C. Jennings of 2973 West Main Street Ext., Elizabeth City, died at Albemarle Hospital Saturday morning June 14, 2003. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, to the late Seth and Lillian Bateman Jennings. She was a retired nurse and a lifetime member of Berea Baptist Church. Miss Jennings left North Carolina in 1938 to live and work with the C. Burke Elbrick family who served in the Foreign Service. She lived in Poland, Norway, Portugal, Cuba, twice in France, and in Washington, DC. Mr. Elbrick later was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Portugal, Yugoslavia, and Brazil. In 1992 Miss Jennings returned to her family home in Elizabeth City.

Miss Jennings is survived by: one sister, Ima Jennings of Elizabeth City, one sister-in-law, Idra B. Jennings of Portsmouth, VA; nine nephews and their wives: Clarence and Carolyn Jennings, Rodney Jennings, Jeffrey and Susan Jennings, Zenas and Nancy Jennings, Tony and Ann Rene’ Jennings, Kevin and Anne Jennings, all of Camden, NC, Lin and Ann Weeks of Elizabethtown, NC, Seth and Patty Jennings and Mike Jennings of Portsmouth, VA; two nieces: Brenda Gould of Portsmouth, VA, and Faye Peter and her husband Dale of Zionsville, IN; one goddaughter Valerie Elbrick and her two sons of Washington, DC; one godson Alfred Elbrick and wife Fern of Suffolk, England, and his four children; and 13 great nephews and six great nieces. She was predeceased by one sister Alma J. Weeks, and two brothers, Jesse Jennings and Samuel H. Jennings.

A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Roger J. Stanley officiating. Burial will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the lobby of the funeral home, and at other times at the residence, at 2973 West Main Street, Ext. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Berea Baptist Church, 2033 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Mrs. Annie Beatrice Jennings
Native of Pasquotank County

Mrs. Annie Beatrice Jennings Jennings, age 85, of 463 Sawmill Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, May 20, 2004, at Winslow Memorial Home. Mrs. Jennings was a native and lifelong resident of Weeksville, NC, was the daughter of the late James Griffin Jennings and Beatrice Cartwright Jennings and the widow of Howard Davis Jennings, Sr.. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church.

Mrs. Jennings is survived by two sons, Ronny Jennings and wife, Karen, of Elizabeth City, NC, and Howard Jennings, Jr. and wife, Susan of Factoryville, PA; one sister, Marguerite Markham of Elizabeth City, NC; two brothers, Emory Jennings of Patterson, LA, and Aubrey Duke Jennings of Aurora, NC; four grandchildren, Jerry Jennings and wife, Dottie; Dawn Munden and husband, George; Leigh Jennings and Eric Jennings; and two great grandchildren, Caroline Jennings and Jake Jennings. She was predeceased by two sisters, Elizabeth Pearson and Ruth Berry and five brothers, Calvin, William, Percy, Ernest, and Alfred Jennings.

A funeral service will be Sunday, May 23, 2004 at 3:00 pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jeffery Russell officiating. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. Following the service the family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home and at other times at the home of Ronny and Karen Jennings, 1266 Salem Church Road, Elizabeth City, NC. Memorial donations may be made to Salem Baptist Church Building Fund, 1401 Salem Church Road, Elizabeth City, NC, 27909.

Dorothy Murden Jennings

Chesapeake – Dorothy Murden Jennings, 82, died July 12, 2004 at Chesapeake General Hospital. Mrs. Jennings was born in Old Norfolk County to the late Henry and Fannie Halstead Murden. She was a member of Great Bridge Baptist Church, the Ladies Auxiliary and the United Teamsters Union. Mrs. Jennings was the widow of John “Jack” Thomas Jennings Jr.

Survivors include two daughters, Janice Gibson and Debra Long both of Chesapeake; one son Dr. John T. Jennings III of Kent Island, MD; one sister, Elizabeth Davis of Chesapeake; four grandchildren, Cameron Jennings, Thomas Jennings, Brian Gibson, and Steven Long; and three great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Amanda, and Leah Gibson.

Graveside services will be held on Friday at 11:00 am in the Moyock Cemetery, with Rev. Ray Owens officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake, Thursday from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm and at the residence at Dorothy and John Jr. following services.

Lucille Jensen

Manteo - Lucille Teresa Hennessey Jensen, 57, died Thursday, April 22, 2004, at her residence.

Mrs. Jensen was born in Jersey City, NJ and was co-owner of Coast Pools and Spas. She was the daughter of the late Edward Hennessey and Lucy Hennessey of Huntersville, NC and was the wife of Ronald Charles Jensen of Manteo.

Besides her mother and husband, Mrs. Jensen is survived by two daughters, Jessica Jensen of the home and Kimberly Jensen Newbern of Aydlett, NC; one son, Ronald Charles Jensen, Jr., of Nags Head; one sister, Nancy Mulcahy of Huntersville, NC; one brother, Francis Hennessey of Rutherford, NJ and two grandchildren, Sydney Lucille Newbern and Tristan Newbern.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Grace Jackson
Emily Grace Harrell Jackson
Pasquotank County Native

Emily Grace Harrell Jackson, age 90, was called home to be with her Lord on November 15, 2003 at Winslow Nursing Home. She was born January 28, 1913 to the late Emma Pritchard Harrell and George Rufus Harrell in Pasquotank County. She married icon John Anderson Jackson of Pasquotank County in 1935.

Grace was a life long resident of Pasquotank County. She was predeceased by her husband, John, in 1946; four sisters, Margaret Brite, Gussie Lee White, Nancy Coffman, and Martha Etheridge; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth White, Marie Tuttle, and Carolyn Miller; and brother-in-law, Walter Jackson.

Her loving family includes her children, Janet and her husband, Billy Hassell, of Elizabeth City; John A. Jackson and his wife, Shirley, of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Rufus Jackson and his wife, Georgetta, of Elizabeth City; sister, Ruth H. Overman of Edenton; sister-in-law, Thelma J. Rogerson of Elizabeth City; her eight grandchildren, Gracie Nelson and her husband, Don; C.B. Jackson and his wife Sonia; Cecil Jackson; Shari Peacock and her husband, Alton; Johnny Hassell and his wife, Lorie; Allen Hassell and his wife, Rebecca; Chuck Jackson and his wife, Kim; Susan Perry and her husband, Paul; and thirteen great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Grace loved serving her Lord through Corinth Baptist Church and faithfully attended throughout her life. Service included Sunday School, B.T.U., and W.M.U. The T.E.L. Sunday School Class and the Senior Adult choir were very dear to her heart.

Grace retired from Albemarle Hospital in 1978 having worked 26 years as an LPN in the Nursery. Newborns were the recipients of her skillful, gentle care.

“Gay”, as she was affectionately called by her family, enjoyed reading, crocheting, tatting, gardening, and visiting all of which brought her great pleasure.

Her name, Grace, is a true reflection of her sweet nature, tenderness, and compassion. All were bestowed generously upon family and friends.

A service celebrating her life will be conducted Tuesday, November 18, 2003 at 11:00 AM at Corinth Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Roy Head officiating. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery.

A visitation will be Monday, November 17 between 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. At other times the family will be at the residence of Janet and Billy Hassell, 801 Forest Park Road. Those who wish may make memorial gifts to Corinth Baptist Church Building Fund or Library, 1035 U.S. 17 South, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.
