Louis W. Hoppe
Southern Shores, NC resident

Louis W. Hoppe, 87, departed this life to begin his heavenly life on March 18, 2004. Born February 10, 1917 in Cicero, Illinois, he was the son of the late Emma and Louis Hoppe. Commander Hoppe was a proud World War II Veteran, serving on the USS Ranger, the USS Henry R. Kenyon and the USS Santa Fe. A graduate of the University of Illinois and American University Law School he practiced law in Washington, D. C. for many years and on the Outer Banks.

His beloved wife of 54 years, Mary Meacham Hoppe, predeceased him. Their union produced 5 children, 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Left to cherish his memory are daughter Jean Hoppe Hurston and husband Jim Hurston of Virginia Beach, VA, daughter Marilyn Meacham Hope of Scottsdale, AZ, son Louis M. Hoppe and wife Helen of Kitty Hawk, NC, son David F. Hoppe and wife Gloria of Harbinger, NC, son Richard K. Hoppe and wife Barbara of Wilmington, NC. Grandchildren are, Kimberly Adams and great grandson Kyle Adams, Carrie L. Kern, Ashley Jackson and husband Josh Jackson, great granddaughter Emma Jackson, Caroline Hoppe and Louis Hoppe; David Hoppe and Molly Hoppe, Richard Hoppe and Emily Hoppe. His dear sister, Ellen Anderson of Barrington, Illinois and additional nieces and nephews, also survive him.

Lou was a true follower of His Lord Jesus Christ. Confirmed in the Lutheran faith he also attended Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church. Lou will be fondly remembered for his great love for his family, friends and country. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A memorial service celebrating Lou’s life will be held April 2, at 11 AM at Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, Pastor Richard L. Stone conducting. The family will receive guests in the social hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church.

Dr. Andrew F. Horne

SOUTHERN SHORES, NC - DR. ANDREW F. HORNE, of Southern Shores, NC died on Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at the age of 74. Dr. Horne spent his entire medical career in the service of his country. He was a Board Certified Flight Surgeon with the Public Health Service with primary duty to the Coast Guard, where he obtained the rank of Captain. His duty stations included Elizabeth City, NC, Port Angeles, WA, Pensacola, FL, Washington, DC, and Kodiak, AK. After retirement he entered civil service in Washington, DC as a Medical Officer and Aerospace Medical Specialist with the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration.

Dr. Horne was born in Bluefield, WV on July 2, 1929. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from Davidson College, a Master of Science degree in Public Health from West Virginia University, and a medical degree from Duke University.

His survivors include his wife, Kathy of Southern Shores; daughter and son-in-law Becky and Rick Elliott of Claremore, OK; son and daughter-in-law Dr. Andrew and Karen Horne of Kitty Hawk; son, David Horne of Kodiak, AK; and his brother Captain Bill Horne, USN RET., and wife, Ellen of New Orleans, LA. He is also survived by his five beloved grandchildren, Melissa and Andrew Horne of Kitty Hawk, Kyle and Hannah Elliott of Claremore, OK, and Brittany Horne of Kodiak, AK.

Graveside services will be held at the Southern Shores Cemetery on Sunday, March 28, 2004 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please send donation to Ducks Unlimited or the charity of your choice.

Delia Hufton

Hertford, NC - Delia Cooper Hufton, age 90, of 503 Maple Street, Elizabeth City NC, died Monday, June 14, 2004 in the Albemarle Hospital. She was a native of Gates County, NC. She was the daughter of the late Ivey Alexander Cooper, and Mae Boyce Cooper, and the wife of the late Albert Hufton. Mrs. Hufton was retired from the Elizabeth City Cotton Mill, and was a member of the Fountain of Life Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Anna Sawyer, and Rachel Cooper of Elizabeth City, NC; three sisters, Iola Jordan of Elizabeth City, NC, Clarine Jett of Spokane, WA, and Anna Mae Stafford of Elizabeth City, NC; three brothers, Roland and Horace Cooper, both of Elizabeth City, NC, and Ocie Cooper of Hertford, NC; ten grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren, and eleven great-great grandchildren. Mrs. Hufton was predeceased by two sons, George and Cledis Duncan, and two brothers, George and Ivey Cooper.

A funeral service will be Wednesday, June 16, 2004 at 3:00 PM in the Fountain of Life Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Bill Mayo and Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. At other times the family will be at the residence of the granddaughter, Dorothy Lamb, 503 Maple Street, Elizabeth City, NC. The family request that memorial donations be made to The Fountain of Life Pentecostal Holiness Church Building Fund, 1107 US 17 South, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

John Edward Hughes

Boca Raton, FL - John Edward Hughes, Jr. died August 8, 2002 at his home in Boca Raton, Florida. He was born February 26, 1918 in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Preceding him in death were his parents John Edward Hughes and Edna Kramer Hughes. He attended the Elizabeth City schools and was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina. During World War II he served in the United States Navy, continuing a career with the Navy following the War, retiring as a full Commander. Before moving to Florida, he maintained a home in Virginia Beach, Virginia, for many years.

Besides his many friends, he is survived by six first cousins; Elizabeth Hughes Falardeau of Rochester, New York, Betty Griffin Ingram of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, William Edward Griffin, Jr. of Herford, North Carolins, Ann Ray Kramer Hillier of Bluefield, West Virginia, Virgilia Leggett Church of Henderson, North Carolina, and Jean Leggett Shuping of Raleigh, North Carolina.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2002 at 2:00 PM in the Old Hollywood Cemetery, the Allen Kramer lot, with the Rev. Fredericka Steenstra officiating. Memorial gifts may be made to Christ Episcopal Church in Elizabeth City, or a charity of your choice. The family may be contacted through Mrs. Betty G. HUBERT GLENN “SKEETER” HUGHES, JR.
Native of New Bern, NC

Hubert G. “Skeeter” Hughes, Jr., 53, of 408 Alton Street, Elizabeth City died Sunday evening, October 27, 2002, in the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in New Bern, NC to the late Hubert Glenn Hughes, Sr. and Laura Daughtery Hughes. He was a retired long shore man with the Portsmouth International Terminal.

Mr. Hughes is survived by a very close companion, Cindy Mitnick of the home, and several aunts, uncles and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, October 30, 2002, at 2:00pm in the Twiford’s Northside Chapel, 1115 N. Road St., Elizabeth City. Burial will be in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will greet friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the funeral service and at other times at the residence. Twiford’s Northside Chapel, 1115 N. Road Street is in charge of arrangements.

Russell Maughan Hull
Native of Whitney, Idaho

Russell Maughan Hull, of 1934 Rivershore Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, November 7th in the Albemarle Hospital. Hull was born April 29, 1924 in Whitney, Idaho to Alvin C. and Ella Hull. Although he spent much of his life in North Carolina and loved the history of the South, he never forgot his pioneer heritage. Hull proudly served his country in the U. S. Navy in World War II. He fought in the South Pacific aboard P.T. boats, the U.S.S. Oyster Bay and the U.S.S. Phoenix. Following the war, he married icon Camilla McPherson in 1948, and returned to graduate from Brigham-Young University with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration. He was awarded a fellowship in agronomy to the University of Maryland, but chose to come to North Carolina to work in the McPherson family enterprises.

Hull’s varied professional accomplishments included President and General Manager, McPherson Beverages, Littleton, North Carolina; farmer, Old Mill Farms, South Mill, North Carolina; and President, Carolina Feed & Seed, Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Having grown up on a farm, Hull strove to make Old Mill Farms an example of how modern farming and conservation could co-exist, for which he was awarded conservation and wildlife awards. Career honors included: President, North Carolina Pepsi Bottlers Association; President, North Carolina Bottlers Association; Director, Wachovia Bank; and Director, Carolina Canners.

A lifelong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, Hull served as Scout Master of Troop 175 for 19 years. Twelve of his Boy Scouts earned Eagle Scouts, one of whom was the first recipient of the “God and Country” award. Hull believed in the Boy Scouts’ dedication to the ideals of value-based leadership education and character training. He was a member of many civic associations, including the Jaycees and Rotary Club. Hull had a sincere interest in education, serving on the Elizabeth City School Board, the Chowan College Board of Trustees, and the board of the Elizabeth City State University Foundation. Hull was appointed by the Governor to the Coastal Plains Commission. He also was active in his church, representing Elizabeth City’s Second Ward of the Church of Latter-Day Saints on the Stake High Council.

Hull, an avid sportsman, was a lifelong member of numerous conservation groups including Ducks Unlimited and Quail Unlimited. He loved nothing more than an early morning hunting at the farm with his sons and grandsons. His sense of humor will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He leaves behind his wife, Camilla; his three children, Maughan Hull of Elizabeth City, NC, Dee Hull Everist of Mission Hills, KS, and Mitch Hull of Locust Valley, NY; and ten grand- children, Whitney, Russ and Chad Hull, Hillary, Mac, and Julia Everist, and Jay, William, Teddy, and Gabriela Hull. He is survived by his brother, Harold Maughan Hull; and sister, Ella Hull Farnsworth. He is preceded by his parents; brothers, Alvin C. Hull, Keith Maughan Hull, Dean Maughan Hull, Robert McCellan Hull; and sister Lorna Hull McPherson. He also leaves behind his friends in Old Timers and Mother’s Brothers.

A memorial service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Ehringhaus Street, Tuesday, November 11th at 2:00 PM. Gary Hume

Kitty Hawk, NC - Gary Steven Hume, 50, of Kitty Hawk, NC, died Tuesday, September 28, 2004 at an Elizabeth City nursing home. Mr. Hume was born in Warrenton, VA and was a retired carpet layer. He was the son of Mary Ellen Leach Hume of Warrenton, VA and the late William Richard Hume.

Besides his mother, Mr. Hume is survived by one daughter, Stephanie Woodley of Fort Edwards Air Force Base, CA; one son, Jonas Hume of Warrenton, VA; one sister, Patty Webb of Kitty Hawk, NC; one brother, Tim Hume of Louisa, VA and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 930 Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834.

Betty Goodwin Humphries
Griffin, GA native

Klamath Falls, OR - Betty Goodwin Humphries, age 70, of 208 Garden Circle, Klamath Falls, OR, died Tuesday, February 25, 2003, in Oregon. Mrs. Humphries, a native of Griffin, GA, was the widow of Elda George Humphries and the daughter of the late Benjamin Harvey Goodwin, Sr., and Genevieve Hargrove Goodwin.

She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Jean and Dean Brady of Klamath Falls, OR; a son and his wife, Bill and Jennifer Humphries of Coweta, OK; a twin brother and his wife, Ben H. Goodwin, Jr., and Penny of London, England; nine grandchildren, Katy Cook, Jennifer McLaughlin, Michael McLaughlin, Courtney Humphries, Ben Humphries, Carrie Humphries, Erik Brady, Patrick Brady, and Ethan Brady; and a great grandson, Ryan Brady.

A graveside funeral service will be Sunday, March 2, 2003, at 3:00 PM in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. David Moehring officiating. The family will receive friends at 1105 West Church Street.

Donald Hunt
Native of Baltimore City, MD

Donald Oliver Hunt, age 59, of 901 Agawam Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, June 19, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Hunt, a native of Balti- more City, MD, was the husband of Sharon Hunt of the residence and the son of the late Donald Hunt and Mary Jones Hunt. He was retired and a Methodist.

Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, Donald Edward Hunt of Salisbury, MD, and Dean Clayton Hunt of Baltimore City, MD; and a half- brother, Mike Brown of Baltimore City, MD. He was predeceased by a brother, David Hunt.

A memorial service will be Friday, June 25, 2004, at 10:00 AM with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the lobby of the funeral home and request no flowers but suggest memorial donations to the Wesley Hospitality House, PO Box 2712, Elizabeth City, NC 27906-2712.

Patricia Anne Huntington

Elizabeth City, NC - Patricia Anne Roderick Huntington, age 60, of 1119 Shellie Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, March 28, 2003 at the Albemarle Hospital. Born in Newport, Rhode Island, she was the daughter of the late David Francis and Esther Catherine Murphy Roderick, and was the widow of Norman Richard Huntington. Mrs. Huntington was an active member of Women of the Moose, and Ladies Auxiliary of William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060.

Mrs. Huntington is survived by: one daughter Kristin Johnson of Bristow, VA; four sons Richard N. Huntington in the US Navy on the Gulf Coast, Mark Huntington in the US Navy in Hawaii, and Eric Huntington and Matthew Huntington both of Elizabeth City, NC; three brothers David Roderick of Newport, RI, Paul Roderick, Norriston, PA., and Timothy Roderick of Tiverton, RI.; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Twiford Memorial Chapel, Church St., Elizabeth City is in charge of arrangements.

William N. Ingham

WILLIAM NEITHERCUT INGHAM, 67, of Duck, NC died Monday, June 30, 2003 at his residence. Mr. Ingham, born in Newton, Massachusettes, was a retired stock broker and a Catholic. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was the son of the late William and Queenie Oakley Ingham.

Mr. Ingham is survived by his wife, Catherine Geisler Ingham of the residence; a daughter, Tracie Kotch of Southern Shores, NC; a son, Scott Ingham of Duck, NC; a sister, Janet Loos of Smith Mountain Lake, VA; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Duck United Methodist Church on Thursday, July 3, 2003 at 11:00 am with Rev. David Clift officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Duck Rescue Squad.

Shirley Ingram

Elizabeth City, NC - Shirley Ann Chambers Ingram, age 59, of 923 Foreman Bundy Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, September 22, 2004, at her residence. She was a native of Currituck, NC, and a life long resident of Elizabeth City, and was the daughter of the late Albert Ray and Martha Lowers Chambers. Sr.. She worked as a quality control technician with the George C. Moore Company.

Mrs. Ingram is survived by six daughters, Tabatha Ingram of Elizabeth City, NC, Patty Ann Byrum of Tyner, NC, Karen Harrington of Hawaii, Kimberly Barclay of Murchison, TX, Tammy Fincham of Harbinger, NC and Lisa Rich of Elizabeth City, NC; four sisters, Phyllis Burtcher of Elizabeth City, NC, Peggy Bray of Kelford, NC, Lorraine Curley of Eure, NC, Jean Ward of Hertford, NC; four brothers, Albert Ray Chambers, Jr. of Creswell, NC, William Griggs Chambers of Manteo, NC, Gary Chambers of South Mills, NC, Joe Chambers of Camden, NC; and a special friend, Marc Stecker, and was predeceased by a son, Calvin Ross Penland and a daughter, Baby Girl Ingram, and a brother, Chester Lee Chambers.

A graveside service will be Saturday, September 25, 2004, at 3:00 PM in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Roland Cooper officiating.

Ruth Anderson

Moyock, NC - Ruth Sawyer Anderson, 94, of 314 Mason Lane, Moyock, NC, died Saturday, May 17, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC to the late Will and Annie Williams Sawyer and was the widow of Edward M. Anderson, Jr. She was a retired Registered Nurse having served private duty nursing as well as hospital nursing, was a graduate of Sarah Leigh School of Nursing, Norfolk, VA class of 1931, and was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Anderson is survived by one daughter, Patricia Mason and husband William of Moyock, NC; one son, Edward M. Anderson, III and wife Kathlene of Newark, OH; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted on Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at 11:00 AM at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery by the Rev. David Moehring and the Rev. Mike McNamara. The family will be at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, 152 Alder Branch Road, Shiloh, NC 27974 or to the Camden Church of Christ Building Fund, P. O. Box 130, Camden, NC 27921.

Marie Dowe Jack
Dare County Native

Mrs. Marie Dowe Jack, age 85, of 1620 Ulster Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Jack, a native of Dare County, NC, was the daughter of the late Adam Dowe and Dora O’Neal Dowe and the wife of John Ambrose Jack of the residence. She was a former policewoman with the Norfolk Police Department and a seamstress. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Besides her husband she is survived by a son, James L. Johnson, Jr., of Elizabeth City, NC; a sister, Alma Doughman of Camden, NC; six grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Norman Loy Johnson and a brother, Marvin Dowe.

A graveside funeral service will be Thursday, April 29, 2004, at 10:00 AM at Austin Cemetery with Father James Buchholz officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, 500 Budleigh Street, Manteo, NC.

Madilynne Jack-Walton

WANCHESE, NC - MADILYNNE ELIZABETH JACK-WALTON, littlest angel to Jennifer A. Jack and Jeffery S. Walton of Wanchese, NC, and formerly of Elmira, NY, died Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at the Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head, NC.

Besides her parents, Madilynne Elizabeth is survived by maternal grandparents, Anne Hancock of Elmira, NY and Richard and Alice Jack of Roanoke, VA and formerly of Corning, NY; paternal grandparents Mary Walton of Texas and the late Gary Walton; and several aunts and uncles.

A memorial service will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo on Saturday, June 5, 2004 at 10:00 am with Rev. Ron Denham officiating.

James L. Jackson
Resident of Elizabeth City, NC

James L. Jackson, age 88, of 112 South Ashe Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, August 16, 2003 in Elizabeth City, NC. He was born in Pasquotank County; son of the late Lory Wood and Elizabeth Louise Ives Jackson and was the husband of Mardell Swain Jackson of the residence. He was a member of The First Baptist Church, where he served as a past deacon and Sunday School teacher, a past president of the Elizabeth City Lion’s Club, and was a member of Pasquotank Tribe #8 Improved Order of Red Men.

Besides his wife, Mr. Jackson is survived by a daughter, Aleene Jackson Davis of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, James L. Jackson, Jr. and wife Lois of Elizabeth City, NC; and two granddaughters, Elizabeth Ashley Davis of Greenville, NC and Lesley Wood Davis of Elizabeth City, NC. He was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Elizabeth Jackson.

A funeral service will be held Monday, August 18, 2003 at 4:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Lamar Eiland officiating. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery. The family will be at the residence at other times. In lieu of flowers, memorial donation may be made to The First Baptist Church, P.O. Drawer 402, Elizabeth City, NC 27907-0402.

Mary Jackson

Elizabeth City, NC - Mary Lee Jackson, 96, of 1802 West Ehringhaus Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Friday, September 05, 2003. She was born in Elizabeth City, NC to the late Cornelius Lamb Jackson, Sr. and the late Lovie O’Neal Jackson and was a retired librarian with the Sanford City Schools and was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sisters, Sarah Louise Brite and Lessie J. Craig and two brothers, Carol C. Jackson and Francis O. Jackson all of Elizabeth City, NC. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Willard E. Jackson, John L. Jackson, and Cornelius L. Jackson, Jr.

A funeral service will be conducted on Monday, September 8, 2003 at 3:30 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Roy Head. A private burial will follow at Old Hollywood Cemetery. The family will be at the residence of Francis and Una Mae Jackson, 853 Halstead Blvd., Elizabeth City, NC.

Mrs. Ingram is survived by six daughters, Tabatha Ingram of Elizabeth City, NC, Patty Ann Byrum of Tyner, NC, Karen Harrington of Hawaii, Kimberly Barclay of Murchison, TX, Tammy Fincham of Harbinger, NC and Lisa Rich of Elizabeth City, NC; four sisters, Phyllis Burtcher of Elizabeth City, NC, Peggy Bray of Kelford, NC, Lorraine Curley of Eure, NC, Jean Ward of Hertford, NC; four brothers, Albert Ray Chambers, Jr. of Creswell, NC, William Griggs Chambers of Manteo, NC, Gary Chambers of South Mills, NC, Joe Chambers of Camden, NC; and a special friend, Marc Stecker, and was predeceased by a son, Calvin Ross Penland and a daughter, Baby Girl Ingram, and a brother, Chester Lee Chambers.

A graveside service will be Saturday, September 25, 2004, at 3:00 PM in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Roland Cooper officiating.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Twiford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
