Emil Vincent Hartert

Chesapeake – Emil “Vince” Hartert, 83, died Tuesday, August 03, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Hartert was a veteran, having served in the US Navy for over 25 years. He loved collecting everything, from Coins to Hummels.

Survivors include his wife Helen three daughters, three sons, and eight grandchildren.

Memorial services with full military honors will be held on Saturday at 11:00 am at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the CANDII House, 3309 Granby St., Norfolk VA 23517.

Thomas R. Hart, Sr.
Native of Morrisville, PA

Thomas R. Hart, Sr., age 74, of 144 Holly Crest Drive, Grandy, NC, died Thursday, December 25, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Morrisville, PA, son of the late Thomas R. Hart, VI and Elizabeth Felsburg Hart, and was the husband of Mary Seaman Hart for 52 years. He was a retired video tape editor, a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic in Kitty Hawk, NC, and a retired member of IATSE local 536.

Beside his wife, Mr. Hart is survived by a daughter, Robyn E. VanPelt of Middletown, NJ; a son Thomas R. Hart, Jr. and wife Susan of Hazlet, NJ; a sister, Elizabeth Hart of Langhorne, PA; and seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mr. Hart was preceded in death by a son, Sean B. Hart.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at 2:00 PM in Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Kitty Hawk, NC. Burial will take place at a later date in New Jersey. Memorial donations may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association National Headquarters, 3300 East Sunrise Drive, Tucson, AZ 85718.

Delbert Harrison

Shiloh, NC - Delbert Dalton Harrison, 71, of 144 Texas Road, Shiloh, NC died Sunday, October 26, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Camden County, NC to the late Roger Forbes and Hilda Harrison Sawyer and was the husband of Patsy Mae Byrd Harrison of the residence. Mr. Harrison was a retired aircraft maintenance technician with the U. S. Air Force, a former member of the Camden County Board of Adjustors, and a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

Besides his wife, Mr. Harrison is survived by two daughters, Eva Jane Green of Sunbury, NC and Anita Harrison Mason of Shiloh, NC; two sons, William Addison Harrison of New Jersey and Willis Dalton Harrison of Shiloh, NC; three sisters, Bertha Jane Gallop of Rocky Mount, NC, Barbara Ann Sawyer of Woodville, NC, and Nellie Ray Chapman of Shiloh, NC; seventeen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, October 30, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Riddle Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Roland Cooper. Burial will follow at Wesley United Methodist Church Cemetery with military honors performed by V. F. W. Post 6060. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC on Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:00 PM and at other times at the residence.

Gettis Harris, Jr.
Native of Currituck Co., NC

Gettis Harris, Jr., 75, of 356 N. Spot Road, Powells Point, NC died Sunday morning, November 24, 2002, in the Sentara Barco Nursing Home. He was born in Currituck County to the late Gettis and Ruth Mercer Harris and was the widower of the late Wilma Sawyer Bohannon Harris. Mr. Harris was retired from the Ford Motor Company, a member of the Powells Point Baptist Church and member of the Currituck Masonic Lodge #463 AF & AM.

He is survived by two daughters, Ruth Ann Perry of Powells Point, NC and Dottie B. Jordan of Aydlett, NC; two sons, Gettis Michael Harris of Harbinger, NC and William P. Bohannon III of Bladenboro, NC; three sisters, Elma George, Frances Moore both of Virginia Beach, VA and Gloria Poyner of Coinjock, NC; eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson.

A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday morning, November 27, 2002, at 11:00am in the Powells Point Baptist Church by Revs. Eugene McLawhorn and Larry Benson. The family will be at 356 N. Spot Road, Powells Point. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, Church St., Elizabeth City is in charge of arrangements.

WILLIAM PAUL “Bill” HARRIS, JR.
Pasquotank County native

William Paul “Bill” Harris, Jr., of 2925 W. Main Street, Elizabeth City died Monday, August 30, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Pasquotank County to the late William Paul Harris, Sr. and Sadie McPherson Harris and was the husband of Pallie Temple Harris. Mr. Harris was the owner/operator of Bill’s Saw and Tool Shop, a member of Berea Baptist Church and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the US Army.

Besides his wife, Mr. Harris is survived by four daughters, Linda Aycock and husband, Jerry of Marion, NC, Patricia Boyce and husband, M. C., of Hertford, NC, Katherine Harris and fiance, Bob Norton, of Elizabeth City, and Margaret “Lori” Harris of Chicago, Il; one son, Wayne T. Harris and wife, Susan, of Cary, NC; two sisters, Effie H. Harris and Frances McNaughton and husband, Frank, all of Elizabeth City. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Michael Aycock and wife, Stephani, Matthew Aycock, Diana Carol Boyce, Wade Boyce, Anna Harris, Carter Harris and Sawyer Harris. Mr. Harris was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Graham Harris.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, September 2, 2004, at 2:00pm in the Twiford Memorial Chapel by Rev. Roger Stanley. Burial will be in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the funeral service and at other times at their residence, 2925 W. Main Street, Elizabeth City. The family suggests memorial gifts may be made to Berea Baptist Church Family Life Center, 2033 N. Road St., Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Dale Harris

SALVO, NC - DALE KIRKLAND HARRIS, JR, 48, of Salvo, died, Tuesday, August 24, 2004, in Chesapeake, Va. Mr. Harris was born in Norfolk, Va and was affiliated with Clark’s-Bethel United Methodist Church.

He was the son of the late Dale Kirkland and Catherine Hooper Harris, Sr.

Surviving are a daughter; Kelsea Lynn Harris of Knotts Island and a son; Korey Dale Harris of New York, a sister; Catherine H. Gray of Buxton, maternal grandmother; Zenovah Hooper Gray of Salvo, aunt; Annette O’Neal, uncle; Johnny Hooper and wife Linda and family all of Salvo and two nieces; Cassie Gray and Krystal Hardison.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the graveside in the Hooper Cemetery in Salvo, Friday, August 27, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. by the Rev. Susie Fitch-Slater and Billy Rutledge . Friends may join the family at the residence 27211 Sand Street, Salvo, Thursday evening.

RUTH BLACKMORE ALLEN
Formerly of Elizabeth City, NC

Ruth Blackmore Allen, 79, of Smithfield, Virginia and a former resident of Jessup St in Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, April 12, 2004, in the Norfolk Sentara General Hospital. She was born in Richmond, Maine to the late Charles and Magretta B. Blackmore. Mrs. Allen was a retired registered nurse and a member and past matron of Elizabeth City Chapter # 44, Order of the Eastern Star .

She is survived by her husband, James A. Allen of Smithfield, VA, three daughters, Sharon Drake of Smithfield, VA, Laura Miller of Shoreham, NY, and Norma Lambert of Wooster, Ohio; one son, Steven B. Allen of San Jose, CA., one step-son, James D. Allen of Clovis, CA. Also surviving is a sister, Natalie Hockenhull of Hampton, NH, ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services with Eastern Star Rites will be conducted Thursday, April 15, 2004, at 2:00pm in the Twiford Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in the New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the chapel service. Arthur Harris

Poplar Branch, NC - Arthur “Art” Melvin Harris, age 87, of 183 Carron Road, Poplar Branch, NC, died Thursday, April 8, 2004, in Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Poplar Branch, NC. He was the son of the late Major Harris and Sallie Garrenton Harris, and was the husband of Mildred Garrington Harris of the residence. He was a retired Bridge Maintenance Supervisor with the NC Department of Transportation, and served in the US Army during WWII and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Mr. Harris was a member of Jarvisburg Church of Christ.

Besides his wife he is survived by one son, William Arthur Harris of Durham, NC; one brother Cecil Harris and his wife Juanita of Chesapeake, VA; a brother in law, Clarence Barber of Chesapeake, VA; one grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Lessie Harris Barber.

Funeral service will be Monday, April 12, 2004 at 2:00 PM in the Jarvisburg Church of Christ with Minister Dennis Crehan and the Rev. Tom Oliver officiating. Burial will be in Laurel Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Military Honors by William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, and at the residence at other times. Twiford Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Patricia Harris

Manteo, NC - Patricia Evelyn Harris, 64, died at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, MD on Friday, December 12, 2003. Mrs. Harris was born in Passaic, NJ and was a Registered Nurse. She was a member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and enjoyed crocheting and knitting. She attended high school and college in Baltimore and St. Joseph’s College in Maine earning several college degrees. Mrs. Harris was the daughter of the late Horace Cromwell Davis and the late Evelyn Faria Davis and the wife of Charles Malcolm Harris, Manteo.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Harris is survived by two sisters; Dianne D. DeSmidt of Channahon, IL and Gwendalyn C. Jackson of Atlanta, GA.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Kitty Hawk Road, on Friday, December 19, 2003 at 10:00 AM with Father Joseph Klaus officiating. Burial will be in the Austin Cemetery, Kitty Hawk. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, on Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM, with a Wake Service beginning at 7:30 PM.

Willie Lee P. Harris
Retired School Teacher

Willie Lee P. Harris, age 81, of 1350 Possum Quarter Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, April 13, 2003 at her residence. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, daughter of the late Robert Marion and Geneva Swain Payne and the widow of Willie Walton Harris. She was a member of Berea Baptist Church, and a retired public school teacher.

Mrs. Harris is survived by two brothers, Robert M. Payne, Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC, and James A. Morse of Murry, Utah; a niece, Christine Payne Mooring and husband David of Elizabeth City, NC; two great nieces, Michele Mooring Cabell and husband Joey of Honolulu, HI, and Karen Mooring Reeder and husband Lacy, and their children Sydney and Kenan Reeder all of Elizabeth City, NC. She was preceded in death by a nephew, Charles R. Payne.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 16, 2003 at 3:00 pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Roger Stanley officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Following the service the family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home and Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Berea Baptist Church Family Life Center, 2033 N. Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC, 27909.

Taylor Harrell, III
Powells Point Resident

Taylor Smith Harrell, III, age 77, of 8222 Caratoke Hwy., Powells Point, NC, died Sunday, November 9, 2003, in Chesapeake General Hospital. He was a native of Mamie, NC, son of the late Taylor Smith Harrell, Jr. and Nellie Gallop Harrell and was the husband of Faye Jones Harrell of the residence. Mr. Harrell was a retired farmer and had served in the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army National Guard. He was a member of Powells Point Christian Church where he served as a deacon for several years.

Besides his wife, Mr. Harrell is survived by a son, Taylor S. Harrell, IV of Powells Point; a daughter, Deborah H. Little and husband, Gregg of Poplar Branch; a brother, Carlton Harrell and wife, Audrey of Durham; an aunt, Janie Lupton of Grandy; and two nieces.

A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, November 12, 2003 at 11:00 AM at Powells Point Christian Church with Pastor David Coxson officiating. Burial will follow in Austin Cemetery in Kitty Hawk. The family will be at the residence. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Johnnie Floyd Harrell
Native of Perquimans County

Johnnie Floyd Harrell, age 77, of 624 Body Road, Hertford, NC, died Wednesday, September 29, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Harrell, a native of Perquimans County was the widower of Mary Elizabeth Dail Harrell and the son of the late Johnnie Harrell and Janie Stallings Harrell. He was a salesman for Albemarle Distributor and a Pentecostal.

He is survived by three daughters, Jan Sawyer and Gloria Roughton both of Hertford, NC, and Virginia Figgins of Raleigh, NC; four sons, Larry Harrell, Wayne Harrell, Douglas Harrell, and Darrell Harrell all of Hertford, NC; three sisters, Evelyn Ferguson of Indio, CA, Linda Phillips of Kalam, WA, and Shirley Cox of Hertford, NC; thirteen grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and fourteen great great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Katherine H. Allen.

Funeral services will be Friday, October 1, 2004 at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Ismael Melendez officiating. Burial will follow in Harrell Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 PM Thursday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Peggy Ainsley Harrell
Native of Pasquotank County, NC

Peggy Ann Ainsley Harrell, age 49, of 1027 Highway 32 North, Corapeake, NC, died Monday, April 19, 2004, at OBICI Hospital in Suffolk, VA. Mrs. Harrell, a native of Pasquotank County, NC, was the daughter of Shirley Sawyer Greene of Elizabeth City, NC, and the late Ronald Edwin Ainsley. She was a housekeeper.

Besides her mother, she is survived by a son, Rodney Harrell of Camden, NC; a brother, Tom Ainsley of Mt. Olive, NC; and her fiance, Winky Hewitt of the residence.

A memorial service will be Thursday, April 22, 2004, at 2:00 PM in New Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

William Robert Harrell

Elizabeth City, NC - William Robert Harrell, age 78, of Hampton, VA, answered God’s call on Sunday, November 2, 2003 at the Extended Care Center at the Veteran’s Hospital in Hampton, VA. He was a veteran of World War II, a member of Ivy Memorial Baptist Church and The Men’s Fellowship Bible Class. Mr. Harrell was a native of Speed NC, a retired Insurance Agent for the Charlotte Liberty Insurance Company, a member of Eureka Masonic Lodge # 317 AF & AM, and The K.J. Eyer Chapter #64 Disabled American Veterans.

Mr. Harrell is survived by nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Faye Todd Harrell and his parents, Joe Harrell and Ruth Everett Pugh Harrell.

Funeral service will be Thursday, November 6, 2003 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel 405 East Church St, Elizabeth City NC by Rev. F. Joe Griffith. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the lobby of The Funeral Home immediately following the service. Joyce M. Harrell

Joyce Mae Harrell, age 63, of the 800 block of North 343, Camden, NC, died Wednesday, August 20, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Miss Harrell, a native of Camden County, was the daughter of the late David Fenton Harrell and Florence Evelyn Smith Harrell of Camden, NC. She had worked at Daverick Printing and the S & R Supermarket Deli, and she was a Baptist.

Besides her mother she is survived by four sisters, Frances DeBerry, Eleanor Teenie Staples, and Carolyn Chesson all of Camden, NC, and Betty Midgett of Elizabeth City, NC; two brothers, Leonard Harrell of Elizabeth City, NC, and Douglas Harrell of Camden, NC.

A funeral service will be Friday, August 22, 2003, at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Mike Askew officiating at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM, and immediately after the service in the lobby of the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence of her sister, Mr. & Mrs. Vance Midgett, 1099 Horseshoe Road, Elizbeth City, NC.

George R. Harrell
Retired Rural Mail Carrier

George R. Harrell, age 82, of 590 Body Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, June 7, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. He was the son of the late Orpha and Brooks Harrell Sr. Mr. Harrell was a veteran of World War II, was at the invasion of Normandy, and received the Purple Heart and Oak Leaf Cluster. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 23 years as a rural mail carrier and was a member of Providence Baptist Church.

Mr. Harrell is survived by his wife, Carolyn Sawyer Harrell of the residence; two daughters, Faye Gray and husband Charles of Elizabeth City, NC, and Eleyse Griffin and husband Simon of Williamston; two grandsons, Michael Gray and wife Darlene of Elizabeth City, NC, and Scott Gray of Elizabeth City, NC; a granddaughter, Susan Griffin of Williamston, NC; and a great grandson Luke Gray.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at 2:00 pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Charles Wellons and Rev. Charles Stevens officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 at the funeral home and immediately following the service in the lobby of the funeral home and at other times at the residence. Memorial donations may be made to Riverside Baptist Church, 1528 Weeksville Road, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 for missionary David Crane.

Harold H. Harden, Sr.,
Native of Bertie County, NC

Harold Hardy Harden, Sr., age 69, of 417 Elcinoca Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died, Monday, February 2, 2004, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Harden, a native of Bertie County, NC, was the son of the late Rhoden Mack Harden and Willie Martha Copeland Harden. He was a retired mechanic from the Causeway Marina and a member of the Lunker Lodge in Hertford.

He is survived by a son, Harold H. Harden, Jr., of the residence.

A funeral service will be Wednesday, February 4, 2004, at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and immediately after the service in the lobby of the funeral home.

WILLIAM WILSON HANNA
Retired Lt. Col., USAF

Lt. Col. William Wilson Hanna, USAF retired, 77, of 1506 Emerald Lake Circle, Elizabeth City, NC died January 1, 2003, in the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Westfield, NJ to the late Hampton and Ethel Jarvis Hanna. Mr. Hanna was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, having served our country in the US Air Force and later in USAF reserves. Changing careers Mr. Hanna became associated with and later retired from the Hampton Hanna & Son Insurance Agency. Mr. Hanna worked with Rockwell International and C. Lloyd Johnson while residing in Virginia Beach, VA.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Akers Hanna of Elizabeth City, two sisters, Ethel Wilson Hanna Booth of Summerville, SC and Charlotte Ellen Hanna Selvig of Tewksbury, NJ. Mr. Hanna was preceded in death by a son, Mark Wilson Hanna.

The body has been cremated and no services are planned at this time. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, Church St., Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.
