Vera Hancock

Bartlesville, OK - Vera J. Hancock, 79, of Bartlesville, OK, died Sunday, February 1, 2004 in Bartlesville. She was born in Manassa, CO to the late Christen Peter and Kate Estella Mortensen Jensen and was a retired Administrative Assistant to the Secretary of Defense in the United States Department of Defense.

Mrs. Hancock is survived by her husband, John Walden “Wally” Hancock of Bartlesville, OK; a daughter, Tamalie Hancock of Fort Smith, AK; two sons, Robert Brent Hancock and his wife, Ann of Manteo, NC and Barry Wood Hancock and his wife, Sharon of Fort Wayne, IN; a sister, Wanda Adair of Logan UT; five grandchildren, Shauna Marie Barker and her husband, Christian of Williamsburg, VA, Mandy Laurane Bartell and her husband, John of Richmond, VA, Jessie Renee Hancock and Lacey Kate Hancock, both of Manteo, NC, and Kealy Ostrom of Grabill, IN; and four great grandchildren, Christian Joseph and Caleb Daniel Barker, Isabella Jadyn Bartell, and John Jeremiah Hancock.

A graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, February 11, 2004 at 1:00 PM at the Midgett Family Cemetery, Manteo, with President Jeff Jacobson officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colony Chapel on Wedensday from 9:00 to 11:00 AM and at other times at the residence of Robert and Ann Hancock, 155 Gareth Circle, Manteo, NC.

RYKER D.L. HAMILTON

NORFOLK – Ryker David-Lee Hamilton, 3 ½ years, died Thurday, December 25th, 2003 on a family vacation. Born August 29th 2000 to Renee E. and Ryan L. Hamilton, he is survived by grandmother Teresa Webb; grandparents Sandra and Robert Hamilton; and Auntie Danielle Hamilton. A memorial service will be held at Twifords Colonial Chapel, 929 S. Battlefield Blvd. In Chesapeake on Friday, January 2nd, 2004 at 3 PM with Father Kuss officiating.

Jacquelyn Carr Hall Halstead

Elizabeth City, NC - Jacquelyn Carr Hall Halstead, age 73 of 1615 Midgett Dr., Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday, February 13, 2003 at her residence. She was born in Southampton, VA; the daughter of Bessie Blythe Carr of Franklin, VA and the late Bennie R. Carr and was the widow of Alvin O. Hall and Meredith C. Halstead, Sr., respectively. She was a retired bookkeeper and was a member of Corinth Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Faithful Worker’s Class.

Besides her mother, Mrs. Halstead is survived by a daughter, Ann Hall Cowan and husband, Paul Edward Cowan of Winterville, NC, a son, Alvin Craig Hall and wife Tabatha Hall of Elizabeth City, NC three grandchildren, Courtney Ann Hall, Grandy, NC, Ryan Craig Hall of Hertford, NC and Kayla Jacquelyn Hall of Elizabeth City, NC, two step grandchildren, Neil Wayne Cowan an his wife Judy of Winterville, NC and Christopher James Cowan of Wilmington, NC, one great grandson, Corey Daniel Simpson, Jr. of Grandy NC and two step great grandchildren, Patricia Ann Cowan and Timothy Scott Cowan both of Winterville, NC.

Funeral service will be Sunday, February 16, 2003, at 3:00 PM in Twiford’s Northside Chapel with the Rev. James Harrington officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will be at the residence on 1615 Midgett Drive, Elizabeth City, NC. Memorial donations may be made to the Albemarle Hospice, PO Box 189, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Clarence Halsey, Sr.

Elizabeth City, NC - Clarence Vernon Halsey, Sr., age 79, of 811 W. Elizabeth Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, August 6, 2003 in Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Perquimans County son of the late Johnny and Mattie Lane Halsey, and husband of Elizabeth Sawyer Halsey of the residence for 60 years. Mr. Halsey was a retired Construction Foreman for Sprint Telephone Company. He was a member of Fountain of Life Pentecostal Holiness Church, a member of the Men’s Bible Class and Fellowship, and a Deacon for 36 years.

Besides his wife Mr. Halsey is survived by one son, Clarence V. Halsey, Jr. and his wife Diane of NH; two sisters, Bessie Sanders of Elizabeth City, NC, Mary Lou Kerr of Vancouver, WA; three brothers, Rev. Johnny Halsey of Chesapeake, VA, Rev. Charles Halsey of Silver Dale, WA, and Willis Halsey of Eastern Shore, VA; three grandchildren, Brian Halsey and wife Christine, Jason Halsey and wife Melissa, and Michael Halsey; four great grandchildren. Mr. Halsey was predeceased by one sister, Margaret Reid and two brothers, Joseph and Eddie Halsey.

A funeral will service will be Saturday, August 9, 2003 at 4:00 PM in the Fountain of Life Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Revs. Bill Mayo, Roland Cooper, and Johnny Halsey. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service, and other times at the residence.

Louis Kenneth Hall

Elizabeth City, NC - Louis Kenneth Hall, 68, of 1108 East Williams Circle, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, January 28, 2003 at Norfolk Sentara.. He was born in Perquimans County, NC to the late George Lewis and Susan Marie Symons Hall. He was a retired lieutenant with the Elizabeth City Police Department having served for thirty years, a member and deacon of the First Christian Church, a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Eureka Lodge #347 AF & AM, and Scottish Rites Bodies of New Bern.

Mr. Hall is survived by his wife, Ann White Hall of the home; a daughter, Mary Sue Moore of Fuquay Varina, NC; a son, Kenneth “Buddy” Hall of Elizabeth City, NC; a sister, Nell Hall White of Fountain Valley, CA; a brother, William Gerald Hall of Aulander, NC; and two grandchildren, Nathan and Lindsay Katherine Moore.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, January 31, 2003 at 11:00 AM at the First Christian Church by the Rev. Dr. Jerry Burton. Burial will follow at New Hollywood Cemetery. A visitation will be on Thursday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home and at other times the family will be at the residence. Arthur T. "A.T." Hales

Hertford, NC - Arthur T. (A. T.) Hales, 65, of 263 Dogwood Drive, Hertford, NC, passed away at his residence on Saturday, May 17, 2003 at 6:15 PM. He was born in Swansboro, NC to the late Thurman and Lena Gertrude Hales. Mr. Hales was a retired insulator and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served in the U.S.M.C.

Mr. Hales is survived by his wife of 17 years, Claudia Hales of Hertford, NC; three sons, Anthony Thurman Hales, Alan Talton Hales and wife Laurie, and Robert Williford and wife Patty; four daughters, Belinda Bryant and husband Wyvlle, Sharon Dunlow and husband Ray, Carron Gamble and husband Greg, and Terri Knight and husband Donald; a brother, Ernie Hales and wife Hope; and a sister, Shelby Hales. He is also survived by three stepchildren, Jerry L. Gray, Michael Gray, and Elizabeth “Sweetpea” Mills and husband Jamie; 14 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and close friends, Mike Ivey, Alton Swain, Tony Ratta, Kelly Cull, Sue and Dean. He was preceded in death by a very special person, Betty Lou who was a mother of seven wonderful children.

A memorial service will be conducted Thursday, May 22, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC. The family will be at 116 Redwood St., Hertford, NC.

Arthur Roy Hadley, Sr.
Native of Norfolk, VA

Arthur Roy Hadley, Sr., age 71, of 8005 West Glen Road, Norfolk, VA, died Tuesday, February 10, 2004, in Elizabeth City, NC. Mr. Hadley, a native of Norfolk, VA, was the husband of Blanche Moyer Hadley of the residence and the son of the late Emmett Francis Hadley and Hazel M. Turner Hadley. He was a former resident of Snug Harbor, NC, and Elizabeth City, NC, and a US Army Veteran of the Korean War.

Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, Arthur Roy Hadley, Jr., and Terry Glenn Hadley and his wife Dana Marie all of Elizabeth City, NC; one sister, Hazel M. Cloutier and her husband Arthur A. of Farmington, NH; three brothers, Gordon F. Hadley and his wife Sarah J. of Blackstone, VA, Stuart Hadley and John B. Hadley both of Norfolk, VA; and one grandchild.

LOIS WORLEY GUTMAN
Professional Artist

Lois Worley Gutman, 89, of Carolina Living, Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday, October 7, 2003, at son’s residence. She was born in Prim Springs, Tennessee to the late Joe and Emma Virginia Worley and was the widow of the late Calvin L. Gutman. Mrs. Gutman was a retired registered nurse and later in her life, she became an accomplished professional artist and was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church, Elizabeth City, NC. She and her husband lived in the Jacksonville, Florida for over 50 years before coming to Elizabeth City.

Mrs. Gutman is survived by one son, Calvin Lee Gutman, Jr. of Elizabeth City, two grandchildren, Christopher Cohoon of Raleigh, NC and Beth Paullin of Chicago, IL; a great grandson, Aaron Lee Cohoon of Raleigh, NC.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, October 9, 2003, at 11:00am in the Christ Episcopal Church by Father Jim McGee. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Chesapeake, VA. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC, Wednesday evening from 7:00 until 8:30pm and at other times at the son’s residence, #1 Gardner Pointe, Elizabeth City, NC.

Ray Charles Guidry
US Navy Veteran

Ray Charles Guidry, age 67, of 171 Mill Road, Hertford, NC, died Sunday, July 6, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Guidry was a native of Geuydan, LA. He was the son of the late Herbert Guidry and Valerie Guidry. He was a retired First Class Machinist from the US Navy.

Mr. Guidry is survived by his companion, Clara Curles Davis of the residence; a daughter, Paulette, and husband Herman, Boseman of Hertford, NC; a son Richard A Todd of Shiloh, NC; two sisters, Dorothy Hill of Copperas Cove, TX, and Sadie DeKerland of Groves, TX; one brother Herbert Guidry, Jr., of San Diego, CA; one grandson, Eddie Boseman; and the mother of his children Ruth Yow Guidry of South Mills, NC.

A graveside service with full military honors will be Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at 11:00 AM in New Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. Dale Forbes officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Milburn Guard

Moyock, NC - Milburn Amon Guard, Jr. age 62, of 203 Dozier Road, Moyock, NC, died Monday, July 7, 2003 in Chesapeake General Hospital. He was a native of Norfolk, VA, the son of late Milburn A. Guard, Sr. and Marie Dozier Guard of Moyock, NC. He was a retired manager for M.A. Guard Oil Company, a member of the National Guard, and a member of Pilmoor Memorial United Methodist Church.

Besides his mother, Mr. Guard is survived by two daughters, Marie Earleen Guard Williams and Annette Worth Guard Williams both of Hertford, NC; four grandchildren.

Graveside service will be Saturday, July 12, 2003 at 11:00 AM in the Family Cemetery, 203 Dozier Rd. Currituck, NC. The family will receive friends in the Pilmoor Memorial United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall following the service. Linda Ann McGee Gross
Resident of Elizabeth City, NC

Linda Ann McGee Gross, age 59, of 105 Jane Lane, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, June 14, 2004 at Guardian Care of Elizabeth City. She was born in Framingham, MA; daughter of the late Fredrick and Helene Chagnon McGee and was the wife of Bradford Mason Gross, Jr. of the residence.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Gross is survived by two brothers, Fredrick McGee and wife Marcia of Grafton, MA, and Leon “Jack” McGee of Wells, ME; a brother-in-law, Terry Blucker and wife Vikki of Elizabeth City, NC; three nieces, Jody McGee of Fair Haven, VT, Amy Andrzejek of Cazenovia, NY, and Christina Blucker of Elizabeth City, NC; and two nephews, Jim McGee of Becket, MA, and Billy Blucker of Elizabeth City, NC.

James D. Groce, Sr.

MANTEO, NC - JAMES DAVID GROCE, SR., 81, of Manteo, NC died Thursday, May 06, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Groce, born in Hyde County, was a retired Historian with the National Park Service. He was a veteran, having served both in U.S. Coast Guard and the U. S. Navy as a Gunner’s Mate during WWII and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Groce was a member of Roanoke Acres Church of Christ, the Manteo Masonic Lodge # 521, and the Shrine. He was the son of the late Jesse Clyde and Vera Browning Groce and the husband of the late Elizabeth Dough Groce. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Omar F. Groce and Waverly C. Groce and a sister, Katie Mae Paul.

Mr. Groce is survived by a daughter, Vera G. Stoutenburg and husband, Ray of Manteo, NC; a son, James “Jimmy” Groce, Jr. and wife, Betty of Manteo, NC; a sister, Margaret Mahler of Norfolk, VA; a brother, J.C. Groce, Jr. of Belhaven, NC; one grandchild, Lee Groce; and several loving nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo on Monday, May 10, 2004 at 11:00 am with Rev. Stafford Berry and Rev. Charles Reber officiating. Burial will be in the Manteo Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

Ralph L. Grimstead
Resident of Hobbsville

Ralph Leonard Grimstead, age 56, of 554 Spivey Road, Hobbsville, NC died Saturday, March 1, 2003 at Obici Hospital. He was born in Virginia Beach, VA, son of the late Martin and Annie Murphy Grimstead and husband of Edith Sears Grimstead of the residence.

Besides his wife, Mr. Grimstead is survived by two daughters, Lori Noble and husband Richard of Corapeake, NC, and Stephanie Grainger and husband Curtis of Moyock, NC; three sisters, one brother, and four grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, March 3, 2003 at 1:00 PM in Hampton Cemetery with Mr. Wayne Twiford and David Sawyer officiating. The family will be at the residence of Richard and Lori Noble of 1436 Hwy. 32 North, Corapeake, NC.

Grey Griggs

SOUTHERN SHORES, NC - GREY SMITH GRIGGS, 78, of Southern Shores, died, Sunday, December 28, 2003, in Elizabeth City. Mrs. Griggs was born in Winnsboro, S.C. and was a retired teacher with Camden County Public Schools. She was a member of Duck United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Griggs was the daughter of the late William Rogers and Zulee Funderburke Smith and the wife of the late Brantley E. Griggs, Sr.

Surviving are two daughters; Jane Hand Moseley of Southern Shores and Cynthia Grey Hand of Norfolk and her step-daughter; Elsie Griggs Pugh of Camden, two grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and three great step-grandchildren.

A service of remembrance will be held Tuesday, December 30, 2003, at 3:00 p.m. in Duck United Methodist Church by the Rev. David Clift. A Private burial will be held in Powells Point Christian Church Cemetery. Twiford’s Colony Chapel Manteo is assisting the Griggs family.

Fred R. Griffith, Jr.

Fred R. Griffith, Jr., 57, of 1921 Rivershore Road, Elizabeth City, died Saturday, July 31, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Covington, Virginia to Audrey McPeak Griffith of Covington and the late Frederick Rictor Griffith, Sr. Mr. Griffith was a retired construction manager with Dominion Power and currently was a real estate agent with Hall-Nixon Real Estate Co. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Monday Rotary Club, Pine Lakes Country Club, Mother’s Brothers Golfing Group. He was a former president of the Elizabeth City Chamber of Commerce, past drive chairman of the Albemarle Area United Way, past president of Jay Cees, board member of the Dominion Credit Union and a former board member of B. B. & T. He also served in the US Army Reserves.

Besides his mother, Mr. Griffith is survived by his wife, Susan Nichols Griffith of the home, two sons, Matthew Griffith and wife Christy of Raleigh, Austin Griffith and wife Michelle of Elizabeth City; a brother, Steve Griffith and wife, Karen, of Greenville, SC; two grandchildren, Reed and Carter Griffith of Elizabeth City; his mother and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nichols of Covington, VA.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday morning, August 3, 2004, at 11:00am in Christ Episcopal Church by Revs. Josh MacKenzie and Jim Horton. Burial will follow in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford Funeral Home, Church St., Monday evening from 7:00 until 8:30pm and at other times at their residence. Gene Russell Griffith

Moyock, NC – Gene Russell Griffith, 64, died March 8, 2004 at Chesapeake General Hospital. Mr. Griffith was born in Williamson, WV to the late Garnet Russell Griffith and Leana King Griffith. He was a member of the Grandy Assembly of God Church. Mr. Griffith spent 25 years in law enforcement and corrections. He owned his own business and recently retired. Mr. Griffith enjoyed gardening and taking care of his Pomeranians

Survivors include his wife of 7 years, Darlene Griffith, step-daughter Leslie Miller and her husband Dean Miller of Ohio; step-son Bob Harris and his wife Hope Harris; step-daughter, Annette Easterwood and her husband Bill Easterwood of NC; step-son Joseph Cervantes of Maryland; nine grandchildren, Katelyn Miller, Clayton Miller, Wryan Harris, Taylor Harris, Trista Harris, Lisa Schiene, Tyler Easterwood, Alan Easterwood and Kaden Bittner; his best friend H. H. Norman.

Mr. Griffith requested that there be no funeral services. All remembrances can be sent to the Norfolk Police Benevolent Fund.

William Bryan Griffin

KITTY HAWK, NC - WILLIAM BRYAN GRIFFIN, 38, of Kitty Hawk, NC died Wednesday, August 18, 2004, after a valiant fight following a short illness. He was formerly a police officer with Kitty Hawk Police Department and Kill Devil Hills Police Department. He was owner of Beach Bins Service.

Bryan is survived by his children, Landon Bryan Griffin and Brayden Lynn Griffin of Kitty Hawk, NC; his mother, Betty S. Griffin of New Bern, NC; a sister, Lynn G. Hardison and husband, Joey of New Bern, NC, his father, Donald K. Griffin and wife, Barbara of Emerald Isle, NC; half-brothers, Cameron and Garrett Griffin of Emerald Isle, NC; nephews, Will and Drew Hardison of New Bern, NC; grandmother, Vivian P. Smithwick of New Bern, NC; and devoted companion, Jen Ulner of Kitty Hawk, NC.

Bryan was blessed with many special friends whose love and support have been with him for many years. They were particularly supportive to him and his family during his recent illness. His “Band of Brothers” will always remain in our hearts.

Bryan’s family will treasure his memory and the kindness shown by many people whom we did not know. We ask for your continued support to his young children who have lost such a special father. His love and devotion to his children was unconditional and they were truly the pride and joy of his life.

Funeral services will be held at Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo, NC on Saturday, August 21, 2004 at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends and family following the service.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday, August 22, 2004 at 3:00 pm at Lakeside Chapel, Greenleaf Memorial Park, New Bern, NC.

The family requests that donations be made to the William Bryan Griffin Memorial Fund, c/o Sharp, Michael & Outen Law Offices, P.O. Box 1027, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949, which is a memorial fund for the children.

W. R. "Reggie" Gregory

Elizabeth City, NC - W. R. “Reggie” Gregory, age 93, of 486 Firetower Rd., Elizabeth City, NC died Sunday, September 22, 2002 at Albemarle Hospital. He was a native of Pasquotank County, NC; son of the late William James and Anna Turner Gregory and was the widower of Evelyn Bright Gregory. He retired from the N. C. Forestry Service and was a member of Newland United Methodist Church.

Mr. Gregory is survived by a son, William Wilson Gregory of Virginia Beach, VA; two grandchildren, William Arnold Gregory of Elizabeth City, NC and Joy G. Kupetz of Kill Devil Hills, NC; and four great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, September 25, 2002 at 11:00 AM at the Stokley Family Cemetery in Newland with Rev. Toni Wood officiating. The family will be at the residence.

Walter B. Gregory

CHESAPEAKE - WALTER BURNS GREGORY, 75, died August 26, 2003 at his residence.

Mr. Gregory was born in Little Rock, AR to the late, Robert B. and Maye Middendorf Gregory. He was a veteran, having served in the US Navy for over 30 years and had attained the rank of Master Chief. Mr. Gregory was predeceased by his daughter, Maye Ann Gregory.

Survivors include his wife, Marge Duviou Gregory of Chesapeake; one son, Gene H. Gregory and his wife Faye of Windsor; four grandchildren Joy Mills and her husband Keith of Chesapeake, Gene Gregory Jr. and his wife Lynn of Smithfield, Everett Brown and his wife Michelle of Smithfield, and Cindy Dixion and her husband Eric of Magnolia, NC; three great grandchildren, Jonathan, Garrett and Jacob.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 6., at 11:00 am at Twiford's Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake with Rev. Johnny McDonald officiating. Burial will follow with full military honors at Moyock Cemetery, Moyock, NC. with Rev. Doyle Wells officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to CHKD, P.O.
