Former Choir Director

Marjorie Jackson Gregory, age 81, of 1030 Northside Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, October 8, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Norfolk, VA, daughter of the late Harry L. and Mattie Cartwright Jackson and was the wife of Edward M. Gregory, Sr.. She was a member of Berea Baptist Church, where she served as the church choir director for many years, and was a volunteer for the Albemarle Hospital Auxiliary and the Museum of the Albemarle.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Gregory is survived by a son, Edward M. Gregory, Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC; a granddaughter, Kathy Fightmaster of Elizabeth City, NC; and a sister, Shirley Overman of Newport News, VA.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2003 at 2:00 pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Rev. Glenn Greenway officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 and at other times at the residence. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Ella Smith Greico
Weeksville Native

Mrs. Ella Elizabeth Smith Greico, age 86, of 3907 Caratoke Highway, Currituck, NC, died Tuesday, January 27, 2004, at Chesapeake General Hospital. Mrs. Greico, a native of Weeskville and formerly a resident of Shiloh, was the widow of Johnnie Anthony “Lon Chaney” Greico, Sr., and was the daughter of the late Kenneth Smith and Mary Sanders Smith. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and was a housekeeper.

She is survived by two daughters, Doris Ferrell of Elizabeth City, NC, and Mary Greico Sanderlin of Shiloh, NC; two sons, Johnnie Anthony Greico, Jr., and Harold Augusta Greico both of Elizabeth City, NC; six grand children; and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Thursday, January 29, 2004 at 2:00 PM at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. David Combs officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 PM Wednesday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of the granddaughter and her husband, Linda and Glenn Speight, 201 Rose Croft Drive, Elizabeth City, NC.

Wallace R. Gray

BUXTON, NC - WALLACE R. GRAY, 81, of Buxton, NC, died Saturday, February 7, 2004, in a Barco, NC nursing home. Mr. Gray was a retired Attorney in Manteo and was also a Developer in later years. He graduated from the University of North Carolina with a Law Degree and was a veteran, having served in as a Radioman in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII in the north and south Pacific. Mr. Gray was the son of the late Charles Poole and Odessa Jennette Gray and was the husband of the late Margaret Creef Gray.

Mr. Gray is survived by a sister, Janet G. Finnegan of Buxton, NC; three brothers, Thomas B. Gray and wife, Winnie, H. Curtis Gray and wife, Olga “Pete”, and Jack S. Gray and wife, Mary, all of Buxton, NC.

Funeral services will be held at the Buxton United Methodist Church on Monday, February 9, 2004 at 1:00 pm with Rev. Charles Moseley officiating. Burial will follow in the Quidley Cemetery, Buxton. The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 pm and at other times at the home of Jack & Mary Gray, Hwy 12, Buxton.

Walter Gray

Nags Head, NC - Walter P. Gray, a beloved 55-year resident of Nags Head, died Sunday, January 11. Wally, as he was known by his friends, was born March 13, 1920 in St. Petersburg, VA. After high school, he attended two years of Wake Forest College (later Wake Forest University) where he left to join war efforts early as a pilot in the Royal Air Force in England. He was in England during the infamous assault of the German Blitzkrieg in 1942. As a 2nd Lieutenant in the R.A.F. he flew a night bomber called the Bristol Blenheim. After a serious crash, he received an honorable discharge from the R.A.F. and the Royal Air Force Flying Badge Medallion. He then transferred back to the United States in the Army Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1944 from the Army Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant.

He moved to the Outer Banks in 1948 and was founder and co-owner of Gray’s Department Store, and along with his wife, Stelle, established the Big Band Preservation Society of the Outer Banks. He had a passion for making people laugh and anyone who came in contact with him heard a “Wally joke”. He also passionately believed in his family, his Catholic faith, the brotherhood of man and his beloved Big Band music which he enthusiastically promoted on the Outer Banks for over 30 years. At the age of 62, after turning Gray’s Department Store over to three of his children, he graduated from Elizabeth City State University with a degree in psychology.

He was preceded in death by Stelle, his wife of 54 years and is survived by son, Walter F. Gray of Boulder, CO.; son, Larry Gray of Southern Shores, NC; son Tony Gray and wife, Nancy of Vilas, NC; daughter, Julie Gray of Kill Devil Hills, NC; son, Ronnie Gray and wife Susan of Southern Shores, NC and eight grandchildren, Kelsey, Matthew, Owen, Jenna, Dalen, William, Patrick and Rachel Gray.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 15 at 12:30 PM at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Kitty Hawk, NC. Family members will receive friends and loved ones at a reception immediately following the service in the reception hall of the Holy Redeemer. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Knights of Columbus, P.O. Box 413, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948. Burial plans of his ashes will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. The family would like to thank the caregivers of the Outer Banks Hospital, Albemarle Hospital and Britthaven Nursing Home. The family would also like to thank Allyson Jackson for her care of Walter Gray the last three years.

Darlene Markham Gray
Pasquotank County native

Darlene Markham Gray, age 46, of 310 Bayview Drive, Stumpy Point, NC, died Sunday, September 7, 2003, at her residence. Mrs. Gray, a native of Pasquotank County, NC, was the wife of James Gray of the residence, and the daughter of Elma Quidley Markham of Elizabeth City, NC, and the late Ernest Harrell Markham. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Besides her husband and mother, she is survived by a daughter, Tammy Byrum of Elizabeth City, NC; two step daughters, Sherry Jeffers and Terry House, both of Smithfield, VA; four sisters, Linda Robbins of Virginia Beach, VA, Sandra Fix of Charlottesville, VA, Gay Girdlestone of New York, NY, and Lisa Hall of Elizabeth City, NC; five brothers, Michael Markham of Fort Walton Beach, FL, Ronald Markham of Elizabeth City, NC, Donald Markham of Hertford, NC, Douglas Markham of Currituck, NC, and Ray Markham of Alabama; and two grandchildren.

A graveside funeral service will be Wednesday, September 10, 2003, at 2:00 PM at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of her sister, Mr. & Mrs. David Hall, 105 Ben Way, Elizabeth City, NC.

Barbara "Bobbie" Gray

HATTERAS, NC - BARBARA “BOBBIE” GRAY GRAY, 71, of Hatteras, NC died Friday, September 10, 2004 at her residence. Mrs. Gray was a native of Hatteras and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Hatteras United Methodist Church and the Cape Hatteras Chapter of Order of Eastern Star. Mrs. Gray was the daughter of the late Harold and Rose Ballance Gray.

She is survived by four daughters, April Rimmer of Hatteras, NC, Donna Funkhouser and husband, Danny of Portsmouth, VA, Ame Gray of Hatteras, NC and Joni Horine of Boone, NC; one sister, Wylie Williams of New Jersey; three grandchildren, Wesley Rimmer, Zakary and Joshua Horine; and her dog, D.D.

Funeral services will be held at the Hatteras United Methodist Church on Monday, September 13, 2004 at 1:00 pm with Rev. Charles Mosely officiating. Burial will follow in the Ballance Family Cemetery, Hatteras. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Island Chapel, Hatteras on Sunday evening from 7:00 to 8:30pm.

James R. Gray
Retired public school teacher

James Robert Gray, age 64, of 1600 Parkview Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, September 16, 2002, at his residence. Mr. Gray was a native of Rutherfordton, NC, and a retired public school teacher. He was the son of the late Willie Lee Gray and Nellie Callahan Gray and the husband of Grace Whiteman Gray of the residence.

Besides his wife, Mr. Gray is survived by a son, Jonathan Gray, and his wife Jennifer, of Camden, NC. He was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Gray Mahaffee, and a brother, William H. Gray.

A memorial service will be conducted Friday, September 20, 2002 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. F. Joe Griffith officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence and immediately after the memorial service in the lobby of the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society - Central Control, PO Box 26777, Raleigh, NC 27611-6777.

Daniel Rene Gourvil

Elizabeth City, NC - Daniel Rene Gourvil, age 60, of 642 Firetower Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, August 14, 2003 in Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Cooke County, IL, son of the late Rene Gourvil and Augusta Gens Gourvil Pitard of Citrus Springs, FL, and was the husband of Judith Nelson Gourvil of the residence. Mr.Gourvil was a musician, and served in the US Army.

Besides his wife and mother Mr. Gourvil is survived by four daughters, Danielle Rene Robinson of Paris KY, Robin Clouse of Jackson, NJ, Cynthia Miller and Lisa Jackson of Lecanto, FL; one son David Schron of Elizabeth City, NC; one brother George Pitard of FL.

A memorial service will be Sunday, August 17, 2003, at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Northside Chapel, 1115 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. At other times the family will be at the residence. Twiford’s Northside Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Franklin Gordon

Elizabeth City, NC - W. Franklin Gordon, 81, of 992 Chicken Corner Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday, October 18, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Camden County, NC to the late John James and Lydia Jones Gordon and was the husband of Virginia Pritchard Gordon of the residence. Mr. Gordon was a retired maintenance supervisor with the N. C. D. O. T. and was a member of Berea Baptist Church, New Lebanon Lodge #314 AF & AM, and South Mills Chapter #270 O. E. S.

Besides his wife, Mr. Gordon is survived by a daughter, Cindy Sawyer and husband, George of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons, Frankie Gordon and wife, Carliss and Gary Gordon all of Elizabeth City, NC; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, October 21, 2003 at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC by the Rev. Roger Stanley. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service and at other times at the residence. Memorial donations may be made to the Berea Baptist Church Family Life Center, 2033 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Jesse Gordon

Kill Devil Hills, NC - Jesse T. Gordon, 75, died Thursday, September 25, 2003 at a Nags Head medical facility. Mr. Gordon was born in Petersburg, Va. and was a salesman for Heileg Myers Furniture Company. He was a lifelong resident of Colonial Heights, Va. and was a member of the Oakland Baptist Church in Disputanta, Va., the American Legion Post 284 in Colonial Heights and the VFW Post 622 in Petersburg, Va. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Gordon was the son of the late Jesse T. Gordon, Sr. and the late Nannie Wilkins Gordon and was the husband of Mildred Wells Gordon of the home.

Besides his wife, Mr. Gordon is survived by one daughter, Wanda G. Davis and husband Jimmy of Disputanta, Va.; one son, Jerry D. Herke and wife Sharon of Millsap, TX; four grandchildren, Jay Davis and wife Erin, Mark, Daniel and Brian Herke; four great-grandchildren, Anna and Clay Davis and Trenton and Joshua Herke; a devoted cousin, Jacqueline S. Hudson of Colonial Heights. Mr.Gordon was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred L. Gordon.

A memorial service will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo on Saturday, September 27, 2003 at 7:00 PM with Rev. Bob Pitsch officiating. There will also be a memorial service at Oakland Baptist Church on Monday, September 29, 2003 at 3:00 PM with Rev. Robert Livesay officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Oakland Baptist Church Building Fund, 12601 Prince George Drive, Disputanta, Va., 23842.

Edward Goodwin

Powells Point, NC - Edward Lewis Goodwin, 79, died Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at an Elizabeth City medical facility. Mr. Goodwin was born in Nichols, NY and was a retired Navy radioman, a radio and television repairman and worked at Seascape Security. He was a member of the Dare County Radio Control Flyers Club and Ham Radio Operator. He was a Veteran having served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and worked in the Pacific as a Radioman and Gunner and Catalina “Black Cat” flying boats. Mr. Goodwin was the son of the late Walter Lewis Goodwin and the late Lena Pearl Mills Goodwin and the husband of Ada Mae Wright Goodwin of the home.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Melody Demarest and Michelle Suri both of North Carolina and Melissa Alphonse of Minnesota; six sons, Roby Goodwin and Danny Goodwin both of New Jersey, Steve Goodwin of Pennsylvania, David Goodwin of Washington, Timmy Goodwin of California and Chris Goodwin of North Carolina; one sister, Junia Oakley of New York; one brother, Charles Goodwin of New York and thirteen grandchildren.

A Visitation will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, Monday, December 29, 2003 at 10:00 AM. Burial will take place at the Nichols Cemetery in Nichols, NY at a later date.

Madge S. Goodwin

Madge Simpson Goodwin, 79, of 203 Queen Street, Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday, October 3, 2002 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Perquimans County, NC, the daughter of the late Matthew Grover and Ella Mae Beale Simpson and was the widow of Thomas Roy Goodwin. She was a former nurse at the Chowan and Albemarle Hospitals and was a member of the Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church and the Nurse’s Association.

Mrs. Goodwin is survived by one daughter, Joan Goodwin Forehand of Portsmouth, VA; one sister, Myrtle Davenport of Edenton, NC; two grandchildren, Cindy Harris and husband Darren and Matt Forehand all of Chesapeake, VA; and two great grandchildren, Brandon and Rachel Harris both of Chesapeake, VA. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Bradley Louise Goodwin and two sisters, Louise Pratt and Doris Forehand.

A funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, October 6, 2002 at 3:00 pm at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Bob Crisp officiating. Burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery, Edenton, NC. The family will be at the residence. Flowers are accepted or memorial donations may be made to the Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church Building Fund, 700 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Roy Good

BUXTON, NC - ROY HOWARD GOOD, 66, of Buxton, NC died Friday, August 29, 2003 at his residence. Mr. Good was born in Frisco, NC and was a Heavy Equipment Operator and Truck Driver for Crump Construction Company. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Coast Guard and the U. S. Army and was a member of the Assembly of God Church. He was the son of the late Sherman and Nina Fulcher Good.

Mr. Good is survived by his wife, Brenda Quidley Good of the residence; a sister, Susie Good of Chicago, IL; three brothers, George Good of Elizabeth City, NC, Tommy Good and Gerald Good, both of Frisco, NC.

Funeral services will be held at the residence at 48077 Buxton Back Road on Monday, September 1, 2003 at 11:00 am with Rev. Roger Barnett officiating. Burial will follow in the Quidley Family Cemetery. The body will be placed in the home on Saturday afternoon to lie in state until Monday.

Manns Harbor, NC - Betty Tillett Goldstein, 66, of Manns Harbor, NC died Friday, March 5, 2004 in Harbinger, NC. She was born in Dare County, NC to the late Marshall Fields and Viola Tillett Tillett and was a homemaker.

She is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Sue Ramadan of Long Island, NY; two sons, Robert Terrell of Manns Harbor, NC and Edward Tillett Goldstein of Baltimore, MD; and three grandchildren.

A graveside memorial service will be conducted on Sunday, March 14, 2004 at 2:00 PM at the Tillett Family Cemetery, Nags Head, NC by the Rev. David Dalton. Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, NC is in charge of arrangements.

Grace Golden

STUMPY POINT, NC - GRACE TWIFORD GOLDEN, 82, of Stumpy Point, died, Monday, August 25, 2003, in her residence. Mrs. Golden was born in Stumpy Point and was a homemaker and a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

She was the daughter of the late Henry and Cora Wise Twiford and the wife of Hildred O. Golden.

Besides her husband surviving are one daughter; Sheila Golden of Stumpy Point.

A celebration of life will be held Friday, August 29, 2003, at 1:00 p.m. in the Shiloh United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tom Jennings and Rev. Tom Clarke. Burial will be in Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery. Friends may join the family at Twiford Funeral Home, Thursday, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to Shiloh United Methodist Church Building or Cemetery Fund, 256 Bayview Drive, Stumpy Point, N.C. 27978. Bessie Hall Godfrey
Native of Tarboro, NC

Bessie Hall Godfrey, age 82, of 104 South 343, Camden, NC, died Saturday, November 8, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Edgecombe County, NC, daughter of the late William David and Maggie White Hall and was the wife of Lennon “L.A.” Godfrey of the residence. She was a charter member of Word of Life Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Godfrey is survived by two daughters, Faye Curlings and husband Archie of Elizabeth City, NC, and Ann Nogle and husband Dale of Moyock, NC; a son, George Allen and wife Janet of Moyock, NC; three sisters, Lula Collins, Margie Key, and Mildred Rogerson all of Elizabeth City, NC; a brother, David Hall of Camden, NC; two special friends, Joyce Dixon and Ann Doxey; and 12 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren. Mrs. Godfrey was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Forbes.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 11, 2003 at 2:00 pm in Twford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 and immediately following the service in the lobby of the funeral home. Jasper J. Godfrey

MOYOCK, NC - Jasper J. Godfrey, age 92, of Moyock, NC, died Friday, February 21, 2003 in Sentara Barco Nursing Home. He was born in Perquimans, NC, son of the late Noah, and Katie Stallings Godfrey. Mr. Godfrey was a retired farmer and served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be Sunday, February 23, 2003 at 3:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Tom Suplee officiating. Burial will be in the Moyock Cemetery. The family will receive friends in lobby of the funeral home following the service. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mattie R. Godfrey

Elizabeth City, NC - Mattie Russell Godfrey, 87, formerly of 919 Woodruff Ave., Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, January 30, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Perquimans County, NC to the late William Dorsey and Gertrude Smith Russell and was the wife of the late Henry Clay Godfrey, Jr. She was a homemaker, a former member of Matocca Council #10 Degree of Pocahontas and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Mrs. Godfrey is survived by a daughter, Brenda Dail of Elizabeth City, NC; four sisters, Blanche Davidson of Tyner, NC, Nina Lane and Dorothy Lane, both of Elizabeth City, NC, and Benna Harrell of California; one grandchild, Kimberly Dail Crank of Elizabeth City, NC; and two great grandchildren, Jasmyn Crank and Brycen Crank, both of Elizabeth City, NC. She was predeceased by two brothers, Pete Russell and Clyde Russell.

A funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, February 2, 2003 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC with the Rev. William Thorn officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Immediately following the service, the family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Brenda Dail, 118 Rosewood Ave., Elizabeth City, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Corinth Baptist Church Building Fund, 1035 U.
