Brooklyn, NY native

Everett William Dods, age 79, of 1507 Emerald Lake Circle, Apt. 104, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, April 25, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Dods, a native of Brooklyn, NY, was the husband of Dorothy Johnson Dods of the residence and the son of the late Harry Byington Dods and Florence Dane Dods Walker. He was a retired bus driver, a US Army veteran of WW II, and a Lutheran.

Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Jane Dods of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Bill Dods of Elizabeth City; and five grand children.

A memorial service will be Saturday, May 3, 2003, at 10:00 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church with the Rev. James Buchholz officiating and military honors rendered by the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post # 6060. Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association of NC, Eastern Region, PO Box 1407, Greenville, NC 27835. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Berenice Dozier Dodge
Resident of Elizabeth City, NC

Berenice Dozier Dodge, age 99, 1608 Parkview Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at Winslow Memorial Home. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, daughter of the late Willoughby and Elizabeth Coppersmith Dozier and the widow of George G. Dodge. She was a retired legal secretary and a former court recorder for the 1st judgicial district.

Mrs. Dodge is survived by three sisters, Gladys D. Haavik and Lillian D. Collins, both of Elizabeth City, NC and Eula D. Engelke of Southern Shores, NC.

A memorial will be held Sunday, May 25, 2003 at 2:30 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Clyde Denny officiating. In lieu of flowers the family request memorial donations be made to First United Methodist Church, 201 South Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC.

Melvin T. Dixon

Melvin Tyrus Dixon, age 80, of 104 Hunter’s Trail W, Elizabeth City, NC died Wednesday, September 24, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. Born in Pasquotank County, NC, Mr. Dixon was the son of the late LeRoy and Della Pugh Dixon and was the husband of Doris Holmes Dixon of the residence. He retired in 1977 from the U. S. Postal Service with 32 years service. Self-trained in architectural drawing, Mr. Dixon completed more than 100 project designs for new construction, remodeling, and renovation, including Twiford Funeral Home. He was an avid reader, and enjoyed keeping up with current events, politics and sports, especially baseball. Mr. Dixon was a veteran, having served in the U. S. Army during World War II and participated in the invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He received a Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service as a member of an intelligence and reconnaissance platoon.

Besides his wife, Mr. Dixon is survived by a daughter, Diana D. Hardison of Abingdon, VA, where she lives with her husband, Edwin T. Hardison. He is also survived by a nephew, Wayne Ballance of Los Angeles, CA. Mr. Dixon was predeceased by a sister, Marie Ballance.

A graveside service will be conducted on Friday, September 26, 2003 at 11:00 am in Old Hollywood Cemetery with Rev. Charles McKenzie officiating. Military honors will be rendered by the William Clarence Jackson Post # 6060 of V. F. W. The family will receive friends in the lobby of Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC beginning at 10:00 am Friday until service time. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Hazel Anderson, 106 S. Ashe St., Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Cyrus V. Dillinger

MANTEO, NC - CYRUS VERNON DILLINGER, 67, of Manteo, NC died Tuesday, October 5, 2004 in an Elizabeth City hospital. Mr. Dillinger, born in Fostoria, OH was a retired boilermaker with the U.S. Navy. He was the son of the late Robert Earl and Blanche McCartney Dillinger.

Mr. Dillinger is survived by his wife, Patricia Woodard Hendren of the residence; two daughters, Sabrina Barrientos and Ramona Berry and a son, Cyrus V. Dillinger, Jr., all of Findlay, OH; two sisters, Dolly Gamble and Mary Bradford, both of Sarasota, FL; three brothers, Frank Dillinger of Strongsville, OH, Paul Dillinger of Bourbounais, IL, and Floyd Dillinger of Osprey, FL; and eleven grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

AMOS DIAZ JR.

Virginia Beach – Marine Corps Master Sergeant Amos Diaz Jr., known as “Famous Amos” to all his friends, passed away quietly and peacefully surrounded by his family. He served 23 years of dedicated service to his country serving the majority of his time in the Reconnaissance community, his jobs had him traveling all over the world and he touched everyone he came in contact with. He was a dedicated family man; he was a leader and a teacher up until the end, and in true “ Amos style” he never quit, his body gave out before he did.

He is survived by his Loving wife of 13 years Mariana Diaz; and his children Amos Daniel, Monica Marcela, Christina Angelica; his mother Ruth Morales; sisters Marisol, Magda, Maritza, Claritza, Lisette; numerous Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Cousins, Nephews, and friends. He is preceded in death by his father Amos Diaz Correa.

The family will receive friends at the Twiford’s Colonial Chapel 929 S. Battlefield Blvd. Chesapeake Monday, February 9th, from 6-8 PM. A funeral service will be conducted at Nimmo United Methodist Church 2200 Princess Anne Rd in Virginia Beach Tuesday, February 10th at 11 AM with a reception to follow, Dr. Charles Smith officiating. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery Wednesday, February 11th, at 9 AM. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to an educational trust fund that is being set up by his former command, Joint Forces Command, point of contact will be Master Sergeant Joe King at (757) 836-7683.

EDWARD FREDERICK DECKER, JR.
U.S.M.C. veteran

Edward Frederick Decker, Jr., 66, 1802 Vine St., Elizabeth City, NC died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, in the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Elizabeth City, NC to the late Edward Frederick Decker and Susan Forbes Decker. He was retired from the U. S. Marine Corp.

Surviving, includes two cousins, Hildamary Scott of Moyock, NC and Patricia Baldt of Poughkeepsie, NY. He was preceded in death by a half brother, Arthur Edward Decker.

The body has been cremated and no memorial service is scheduled at this time.

Robert Deacon

Southern Shores, NC - Robert Fraser Deacon, 74, died Thursday, December 25, 2003 at his residence. Mr. Deacon was born in Waterbury, CT and was a Retired Sales Engineer for the Torrington Company. He was a graduate of The University of Bridgeport in CT and had a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering. Mr. Deacon was a member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, the Southern Shores Volunteer Fire Dept, the Cancer Support Group and was a Veteran of the U.S. Army. He was the son of the late Walter H. Deacon and the late Gladys McLaughlin Deacon and the husband of Rose Sievers Deacon of the home.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Denise Marie Deacon of Southern Shores and Rachel Louise Deacon of Kitty Hawk; two sons, Walter Thaddeus Deacon and his wife Margie of W. Lafayette, IN, Robert Andrew Deacon and his wife Krista, of Concord, CA; one sister, Jane Smith of Juno Beach, FL; five grandchildren, Lexie Brindle, Natalie, Thomas and Kaitlyn Deacon, Louis Brock and one great-grandchild, Aiden Beard; he was preceded in death by one sister, Polly Moody and one brother, Walter Deacon.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church on Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at 11:00 AM with Father Joseph Klaus officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to the Dare County Home, Health and Hospice or donate blood to your local blood bank.

Samuel Davis, Jr.

Samuel Sykes Davis, Jr., 90, of 428 Sam Davis Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, March 29, 2004 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Pasquotank County, son of the late Samuel Sykes Davis, Sr. and Gabrilla Bright Davis and was the widower of Murrel Monds Davis. He was the founder and owner of Davis Hardware for 50 years, a member of Calvary Baptist Church, and attended First United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in WWII, a member of William Clarence Jackson V.F.W. Post 6060, and a past board member of the Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Davis is survived by a son, Samuel Sykes Davis, III and wife Patty; two grandsons, Samuel John Davis and Joshua Sykes "Sy" Davis; a sister, Annie Davis Allen. Mr. Davis was preceded in death by six sisters, Nancy Davis, Susie Davis, Jemima Laura Davis, Mary Davis Chory, Sally Davis, and Margaret Davis Jackson; and a brother, James Morris Davis.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at 11:00 am in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Clyde Denny officiating. Burial will be in Old Hollywood Cemetery. Following the service the family will receive friends in the Asbury Room of the church and at other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Davis, III, 618 Small Drive, Elizabeth City, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Jacqueline Davis

Colerain, NC - Jacqueline Curling Davis, 65, of 208 East River Road, Colerain, NC, died Friday, May 14, 2004 at Obici Hospital. She was born in Norfolk, VA to the late Curtis Lionel and Miriam Webster Curling. She was also predeceased by brother, James E. Curling. She was the wife of Victor Lynn Davis, Jr. of the home.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Davis is survived by one son, Victor Lynn Davis, III and wife Denise, of Wanchese, NC and two daughters, Robin Leigh Davis of Chapel Hill, NC and Jill Marie Szalaj and husband, Jeff, of Garner, NC; one sister, Carol Curling Ransdell of Virginia Beach, VA and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 16, 2004 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, with Rev. Ronnie Midgett officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The American Cancer Society, 930 B Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834.

Virginia B. Davis

Elizabeth City, NC - Virginia B. Davis, age 82 of Warden St., Elizabeth City, NC died Thursday, May 22, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC; daughter of the late Charlie Q. and Maybelle Hudson Baker. She retired from the Elizabeth City Hosiery Mill and was a member of First Christian Church.

Mrs. Davis is survived by a daughter, Margaret D. Roughton and her husband, Terry, of Hertford, NC; four sisters, a brother, three grandchildren; Terry Roughton, Jr. and his wife, Gloria, Kenneth Roughton, and Kelly Roughton and his wife, Yvonne; four great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, May 24, 2003 at 2:00 PM at the First Christian Church with Rev. Glenn Brigman and Rev. Bill Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC on Friday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Terry Roughton, 240 Felton Lane, Hertford, NC.

SADIE MAE MIZELLE LEARY DAVIS
Chowan County native

Sadie Mae Mizelle Leary Davis, 92, of Hertford, NC and former of Edenton, NC died in the Brian Center, Hertford, NC Friday, April 11, 2003. She was born in Chowan County to the late Richard R. and Harriett Mizelle and was the widow of the late William Kader Davis. Mrs. Davis was a former employee of the Chowan County Public School System, having worked in the cafeteria.

She is survived by two daughters, Hazel L. Severance and Maizel L. Dunlow both of Edenton, NC; two sons, William Ike Davis of Edenton, NC and Samuel Kader Davis of Charlotte, NC; six grandchildren, Sharon D. Bond, Ronnie K Campbell both of Edenton, NC, William C. Dail, Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA., Elizabeth A. Davis, John H. Davis both of Greenville, NC and Lesley W. Davis of Elizabeth City, NC.; five great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Iris Jean Dail.

Graveside services will be conducted, Monday, April 14, 2003, at 11:00am in the Beaver Hill Cemetery, Edenton, NC by Rev. Thomas Biggs. The family will be a the residence of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William I. Davis, 504 N. Broad St., Edenton, NC. Twiford’s Funeral Home, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC.

Harrell B. "Red" Davenport

Elizabeth City, NC - Harrell B. “Red” Davenport, 80, of 890 Oak Stump Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, October 4, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Creswell, NC to the late Willie P. and Elma Phelps Davenport and was the widower of Jessica Womack Davenport. Mr. Davenport was a retired principal with Northeastern High School and also taught Agriculture and Shop at Central High School. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U. S. Navy having served in World War II.

Mr. Davenport is survived by two daughters, Linda Davenport of Raleigh, NC and Susan Norton of Elizabeth City, NC; one son, Tracy Davenport of Charlotte, NC; one sister, Miriam Hassell of Chesapeake, VA; one brother, Everett Davenport of Creswell, NC; and three grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted on Monday, October 6, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Corinth Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Roy Head. Burial will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will be at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Albemarle Hospice, P. O. Box 189, Elizabeth City, NC 27907 or to Corinth Baptist Church, 1035 US 17 South, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

William "Billy" Davenport

NAGS HEAD, NC - WILLIAM “BILLY” HARPER DAVENPORT, SR., 59, of Nags Head, NC, died Wednesday, August 13, 2003 at his residence. Mr. Davenport, born in Plymouth, NC was owner and operator of Davenport Drywall and also worked at the Outer Banks Fishing Pier and was a member of the Soundside Missionary Baptist Church in Columbia, NC. He was the son of the late Emory and Vergie Boggs Harper and adoptive parents, the late Percy and Lillie Davenport.

Mr. Davenport is survived by his wife, Annie “Louise” Cole Davenport of the residence; two daughters, Lisa Kimnach of Virginia Beach, VA and Sheryl Eustis of Holly Spring, NC; four sons, William H. Davenport, Jr. of Jarvisburg, NC, Donnie Davenport of Harbinger, NC, Ernest M. Swain, Jr. of Colington, NC and Chris Scott Swain of Nags Head, NC; seven sisters, Thelva Walton of Sonoma, CA, Violet Walls of Alum Creek, WV, Elaine Gray of Plymouth, NC, Thelma Hassell of Columbia, NC, Wilma Spencer of Columbia, NC, Clara Mae Rhodes of Columbia, NC and Beverly Harper of Eugene, OR; three brothers, Exil Harper of Orville, CA, Frankie Harper of Eugene, OR and Dallas Davenport of Creswell, NC; and ten grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at the Soundside Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Columbia, NC on Friday, August 15, 2003 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Dorris Walls officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Funeral Home, Manteo, on Thursday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

Vivian Fay Brinson Daveiro

Vivian Fay Brinson Daveiro, 72, of 104 Gaston Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Elizabeth City, NC, the daughter of the late James and Margaret Forbes Brinson and was the widow of Louis Alfred Daveiro. She was a homemaker and a member of Elizabeth City Rebecca Lodge # 62.

Mrs. Daveiro is survived by a daughter, Sherry Godfrey and husband Wayne of Elizabeth City; a son, Louis Alfred Daveiro, Jr. and wife Susan of Elizabeth City; a brother, James Brinson of Elizabeth City; and four grandchildren, J. W. Godfrey, Jamie Daveiro, Janna Godfrey, and Josie Daveiro all of Elizabeth City. She was preceded in death by a sister, Charlotte Godfrey, and two brothers, Hubert and George Brinson.

A graveside service will be conducted on Thursday, October 17, 2002 at 2:00 pm at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Clay Manos officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence of Louis and Susan Daveiro, 104 Gaston Drive, Elizabeth City, NC.

Mary Darnell

Mary Sophia Bowden Darnell, age 100 of Enid, Oklahoma, died Wednesday, August 27, 2003 at her daughter’s residence. She was born in Hillsborough, TX; daughter of the late Isaac Hillingsworth and Maudie Beatrice Johnson Bowden and was the widow of Mark Lively Darnell. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Enid.

Mrs. Darnell is survived by a daughter, Beatrice Elizabeth “Betty” Ferrell of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Eugene Bowden Darnell of Enid, OK; four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. She was predeceased by two sons, Jack Hollingsworth Darnell and Lawrence Melvin Darnell.

A graveside service will be Tuesday, September 2, 2003, at 2:00 PM in Memorial Park Cemetery in Enid, OK.

Charles Darlington

Hatteras, NC - Charles Raymond Darlington, 73, of Hatteras, NC died Friday, August 22, 20003 at Albemarle Hospital. Born in Detroit, MI, he was the son of the late William and Catherine Slack Darlington and was the husband of Dixie Meekins Darlington of the residence. He was a retired technical writer for IBM and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served in the United States Coast Guard.

Besides his wife, Mr. Darlington is survived by four daughters, Karen Garmany and husband Robert of Raleigh, NC, Janice Darlington of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Laurie Hedgpeth and husband Tim of Fuquay Varina, NC, and Julie Conner and husband Kevin of Powells Point, NC; one sister, Janet Wensink and husband Bill of Gladwin, MI; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Dare County S.P.C.A.

Nils Danielson

Currituck, NC - Nils Carl Danielson, age 87, of 100 Widgeon Drive, Bells Island, Currituck NC, died Sunday, April 4, 2004, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He was a retired Carpenter Superintendent/Engineer-Heavy Construction.

He was a Master Mason for over 50 years Amityville Lodge and presently Coinjock Lodge #463, and was a volunteer Firefighter for 20 years with the Massapequa Fire Department. He was a WWII Navy Veteran, Construction Battalion Unit #69. Mr. Danielson was the husband of M. Lillian Sjoholm Danielson, of the residence.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Esther Danielson-Berger and her husband, Andrew of Currituck, NC. He was predeceased by a daughter, Karen Danielson. Also surviving are two sons, Kenneth Danielson and his wife, Nancy of East Hampton, LI, and Richard Danielson of Ocean View, Hawaii; one brother John Albert Danielson of Bethpage, NY; five grandchildren, Emily Danielson Berger of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Allison Danielson Berger of Currituck, NC, Laura and Kathleen Danielson of East Hampton, LI, and Zachary Blue Danielson of Manchester, CT.

A memorial service will be conducted, Saturday, April 10, 2004, at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, 929 S. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake, VA.

Memorial donations may be made to the Currituck Masonic Lodge #463, % Tommy Dowdy, 7758 Caratoke Hwy. Powells Point, NC. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St. Elizabeth City, NC, is in charge of arrangements.

Robert R. Daniels

WANCHESE, NC - ROBERT RICHARDSON DANIELS, 79, of Wanchese, NC died Tuesday, March 30, 2004 in a Chesapeake, Va. Hospital. Mr. Daniels, born in Wanchese, was a commercial fisherman and a Methodist. He was the son of the late Ruford and Gladys Daniels and the widower of the late Loma Moore Daniels.

Mr. Daniels is survived by three sons, Robert Dale Daniels of Huntington Beach, CA, William Tony Daniels and Teddy Doyle Daniels, both of Wanchese, NC; three sisters, Thelma Baum of Wanchese, NC, Laura Paul of Winterville, NC, and Reba Conrad of Charlotte, NC; two brothers, Tommy Daniels and Denny Daniels, both of Wanchese, NC; and three grandchildren, Meredith Preve Daniels, Robert Benjamin Daniels and Paula Devusser.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Wanchese Assembly of God on Saturday, April 3, 2004 at 2:00 pm with Charles Daniels officiating. Burial will follow in Cudworth Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Funeral Home, Manteo on Friday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
