Allan A. Crow

NAGS HEAD, NC - ALLAN ALEXANDER CROW, Jr., 73, of 401 Sandpiper Terrace, Nags Head, NC, died August 4, 2004. He was a native of Lakewood, NJ and was the son of the late Allan A. Crow, Sr. and Ray Faulk Crow.

Mr. Crow is survived by two daughters, Sharon Sunstein and husband, Lou of Clarksville, TN, and Jennie Wishnefsky and, husband, Phil of Frackville, PA; four sons, Ray Crow of Williamsburg, VA, Mason Crow and wife, Judy of Newport News, VA, Keith Crow and wife, Karen of Sicklerville, NJ and Alex Crow of Medford, NJ; and a special friend, Molly Sigmon.

Mr. Crow was preceded in death by a son, Allan A. Crow, III.

A Memorial Service will be held at Grace Lutheran by the Sea, Nags Head, NC on Monday, August 9, 2004 at 11:00 am with Rev. Albert Isler officiating. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the Grace Lutheran Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1356, Nags Head, NC 27959.

Carol Bacik

BUXTON, NC - CAROL DEAN BACIK, loving, wife, mother and grandmother, passed on to the peace of her Lord at 75 years of age, Friday, September 17, 2004 in Chesapeake General Hospital with her loving husband and family by her side.

She has been a very active member of Our Lady of the Sea Catholic Parish and Hatteras Island Community in Buxton, N.C. for the past 15 years.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, November 24, 1928, as the only child of Samuel Randolph and Gertrude Nash Dean, her father was a member of Pioneers of Broadcasting and treasurer of CBS at its inception, until retiring. She was a summer camp waterfront counselor in Maryland and volunteer leader in a downtown New York urban center. She graduated from Penn Hall Prep School, Chambersburg, Pa, Hood College (past member President’s Round Table) in Frederick, Md, with a BS and Shippensburg State University, Pa with a Master’s Degree in Education. While a resident of Chambersburg, Pa, her love of teaching showed in her work as an elementary teacher at Chambersburg area schools and in her development of the first CCD Religious Education Program at Corpus Christi Parish with Father Fontanella. An active member of the American Association of University Women she served as the local chapter president, on the Pa. State Board, and as their State and National Lobbysist.

After moving to Fredericksburg, Va. in 1973 she helped start the Saint Vincent De Paul Charity Conference there as well as being a contributing member of the Virginia Museum in Richmond, Va and the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. In Fredericksburg she put aside her teaching career to join her husband in building their privately owned business, Arby Construction Enterprises. She was a member of the Va. and Md. Roofing Contractors Association. This Mfg. Rep for construction materials gave them many opportunities for international travel to every continent except Australia. Highlights were their trips to the Holy Land and Rome, ancestral homes in Ireland and the Czech Republic, several days alone with a guide on the Serengeti Plain in Africa, Barbados and Singapore. She tied in her love of educating children by taking slide shows of her trips to many schools and organization.

In 1987 she and her husband retired to Frisco on the Outer Banks of NC. There she kept very active in her interests by joining various associations including board member, National American Glass Club, Glass Associates, Chrysler Museum, Norfolk, Va, various garden clubs, Cape Hatteras Bird Club, Volunteer for National Park Service, Hatteras Light House and Cape Hatteras Anglers Club. She led many visitors to the Outer Banks on bird walks and lectures doing much to promote the ecological needs of this national sanctuary for wildlife. She was one of few who could walk among birds without scattering them. Hummingbirds were known to land on her shoulder and her interests in hummingbirds led to a banding program on the Outer Banks. She was a past member and vice-president of the Board of Governors for the Elizabethan Gardens on Roanoke Island, N.C. Central to her faith was the expression of it to the youngest members. She was a certified Lay Minister of the Catholic Church, member of the Altar Society, Woman’s Guild and served as Religious Education Teacher for her local parish. She suffered many children to come unto her and they were the better for it.

She was preceded to the peace of our Lord by her son Brian Bacik and is survived by her husband, Richard Bacik of Buxton, N.C. her children, Cheryl Bacik of Washington, DC; Diana Hamsher of Jacksonville Beach, Fl and Andrew Bacik and his wife Janet of Charlotte, NC, her grandchildren by Cheryl, Amanda Bacik, and by Andrew and Janet, Eileen, Meghan, Brian and Lauren Bacik; cousins, James, Gordon and Ted Stewart and surviving members of the Dean family in Ga.

A funeral mass will be Tuesday Sept 21st, 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Sea and a graveside service will be in Chambersburg, Pa, Thursday Sept 23rd. Arrangements are being handled by Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo, N.C. phone 252-473-2449. Donations to Our Lady of the Sea Catholic Parish, Church Building Fund, Highway 12, Buxton, N.C. 27920 in her memory are appreciated.

Maurice Crosbie

WANCHESE, NC - MAURICE GORDON CROSBIE, 84, of Wanchese, NC died Wednesday, October 15, 2003 at his residence. Mr. Crosbie, born in Biddeford, ME, was an Air Traffic Control Specialist with the Federal Aviation Agency. He was a WWII veteran, having served in the U.S. Army Air Force as a B-17 pilot in the European Theatre and earned the rank of Captain. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart. He was a member of the 390th Bombardment Group Association and the Legion of Valor.

Mr. Crosbie was the son of the late Edward and Marion Gordon Crosbie and the husband of Louise Covan Crosbie of the residence.

Besides his wife, Mr. Crosbie is survived by a daughter, Robin Crosbie of Hadley, MA; a son, Mike Crosbie of Manassas, VA; a sister, Virginia Simpson of Old Orchard Beach, ME; four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Caroline and Julianne Crosbie and Lauren Dymek.

A graveside service will be held in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors on Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at 11:00 AM at the Fort Meyers Chapel.

Goldie Hutchinson Crocker
Former Secretary at the Pentagon

Mrs. Goldie Hutchinson Crocker, age 81, of Box 57 Pine Grove Lane, Point Harbor, NC, died Saturday, June 21, 2003, at Duke Hospital. Mrs. Crocker, a native of Wise County, VA, was the widow of George Amber Crocker and the daughter of the late Charles Bascom Hutchinson and Pearl May Peters Hutchinson. She was a former secretary in the War Department of the Pentagon and a member of Hebron United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Crocker is survived by three daughters, Bettie May and husband Scott, Fisher of Norfolk, VA, Catherine Lee, and husband Bobby, Whitlow of Clover, VA, and Judith Ann Schneider of Kill Devil Hills, NC; two sisters, Bonnie Ellis of Kingsport, TN, and Madeline Snead of Richmond, VA; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a grandson.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 24, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Herbert Hemingway officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence.

Eleanor “Ellie” Amundsen
Native of Franklin, NJ

Eleanor Jean Talmadge Amundsen, age 54, of 121 West Island Trail, Hertford, NC, died Thursday, November 6, 2003 at her residence. Mrs. Amundsen, a native of Franklin, NJ, was the wife of Dean Karl Amundsen, Sr., and the daughter of the late Lee Grant Talmadge and Jenevie Babcock Talmadge. She was a homemaker.

Besides her husband she is survived by three daughters, Margaret “Petty” Ratliff, Angel Talmadge, and Christina Amundsen all of Hertford, NC; one son, Dean karl Amundsen, Jr., of Hertford, NC; a sister, Phyllis Talmadge of Elizabeth City, NC; two brothers, Harry Talmadge of Franklin, NJ, and Eddie Babcock of Port Jarvis, NY; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Monday, November 10, 2003 at 1:00 PM at Twiford’s Northside Chapel, 1115 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence of the daughter, Margaret “Peggy” Ratliff, 109 Choctaw Trail, Hertford, NC.

Hazel Bailey

Goldsboro, NC - Hazel Vera Bailey, formerly of Jones Ave. in Elizabeth City, NC passed this life on July 16, 2003. She passed into eternity to be with her Lord at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro, NC. Her son, Ebert L. Bailey, Jr. and family were by her side during her illness.

Born in Winfall, NC, November 21, 1912, her parents were William D. Miller and Vera Ann Turner Miller. She was the widow of Ebert L. Bailey, Sr. and a member of First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

Mrs. Bailey is survived by a son, Ebert L. Bailey, Jr. and wife, Patricia, of Goldsboro, NC; two grandsons, Ebert L. Bailey, III, and wife, Betsy, of Apex, NC and Ronald M. Bailey and fiancé, Gaye, of Raleigh, NC; two great grandsons, Michael and Matthew Bailey of Apex, NC and a sister, Ann Miller Byrum of Durham, NC.

A graveside service will be conducted on Sunday, July 20, 2003 at 3:00 PM in Old Hollywood Cemetery with Rev. Clyde Denny officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City Saturday evening from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM and immediately following the service, at the graveside. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 401, Elizabeth City, NC 27907.

Andrew Creekmore

Manteo - Andrew T Creekmore, 86, died on August 1, 2004 in the Outer Banks Hospital at Nags Head. He was surrounded by his family. A native of Moyock, he was the son of the late William Hillary and Alpine Flora Creekmore and was the widower of Eunice Butler Creekmore.

Andrew grew up in Moyock in a sea of relatives and loved the Currituck area. He particularly loved the water and fishing. He had a lot of experiences in his 86 plus years. In 1935, he briefly attended Mars Hill College. In 1936 he graduated from Norfolk Business College and worked at the Ford Plant for 9 months in 1937. He worked at Armour Meats for 4 years as a salesman, which he loved. He joined the Navy in 1941 and rose to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. After the war, he took the GI bill and became an electrician at the Norfolk Naval Base.

In 1954 he returned to Moyock and joined his brother, William, to run Creekmore Brothers Store. It was very sweet to return home. He became a rural mail carrier in 1963. Andrew retired in 1979 and moved to Manteo to be near his grandchildren and the wonderful waters of North Carolina. He enjoyed traveling the country in a travel trailer. He and Eunice were very active with the senior fellowship.

Andrew was a member of Moyock United Methodist Church for most of his life. In Manteo, he joined Mt Olivet United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his daughter, Linda C. Brown of Manteo, and his son Andrew T. Creekmore Jr of Cary; a sister, Mollie C Winslow of Moyock; five grandchildren; Angie B. Fentress, Amy C. Bohannon, Kenneth Brown, Andrew Creekmore III, and Matt Brown, and six great-grand children; Jordan Fentress, Will Brown, Lee Fentress, Madison Lewis, Jake Brown, and Abigail Bohannon.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at 11:30 AM at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, NC. Burial will be in Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens. The family invites relatives and friends for lunch at the residence, 145 Meekins Drive in Manteo following the funeral.

VERNON LEE CREEKMORE
Lifelong resident of Currituck Co., NC

Vernon Lee Creekmore, 83, 224 Creekmore Rd., Moyock, NC died Sunday, December 7, 2003, in the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Mr. Creekmore was born in Currituck County, NC; the son of the late Vernon Fulford and Blanche Lee Creekmore and was the husband of Elizabeth “Nicky” Stuart Creekmore. He was a retired insurance agent, a member of the Pilmoor United Methodist Church and a member of the Currituck Masonic Lodge #463 AF & AM. Mr. Creekmore loved his family and friends. He was an avid fisherman, and was a friend to all, never meeting a stranger. He loved the leisure time he spent in Dare County as well as Currituck County.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Carole Dobberteen and husband, James, of Virginia Beach, VA, a granddaughter, Lisa Cox and husband, Tim of Virginia Beach, VA, a great granddaughter, Amanda Lee Cox of Virginia Beach, VA, a sister, Margaret C. Pritchard and husband, Joe, of Moyock, NC; and a niece, Janet Lane of Chesapeake, VA.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, December 10, 2003, at 11:00am in the Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC by Rev. Scott Wilson-Parsons. Burial will be in the Moyock Memorial Cemetery. The family will be at their residence, 224 Creekmore Rd., Moyock, NC.

Effie Creekmore

Camden, NC - Effie Harris Creekmore, age 101, of 258 East 158, Camden, NC, died Friday, June 27, 2003 in Winslow Memorial Nursing Home. She was a native of Pasquotank County, NC, and a resident of Camden County for over 95 years. She was the daughter of the late Sophia Sawyer Harris and Richard Harris, and the widow of Bruce G. Creekmore. Mr. and Mrs. Creekmore operated The County Store in Belcross for over 50 years. She was a member of Sawyer’s Creek Baptist Church and Fidelis Sunday School Class.

Survivors include a daughter, Pauline Creekmore of Camden, NC, several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be Monday, June 30, 2003 at 11:00 AM in Old Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. Tom LeGrand officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon 4:00 to 5:30 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial donations be made to, Sawyer’s Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 241 Sawyer’s Creek Rd., Camden, NC 27921.

Mabel Creef

MANTEO, NC - MABEL BALLANCE CREEF, 84, of Manteo, NC and formerly of Elizabeth City, died Wednesday, February 04, 2004 at her residence. Mrs. Creef, born in Hatteras, NC, was a retired Speed Hand for the Elizabeth City Cotton Mill and was a Methodist. She was the daughter of the late Clarence D. Ballance, Sr. and the late Nola Willis Ballance and was the widow of the late Alvin “Little Bud” Creef.

Mrs. Creef is survived by a daughter, Gloria C. Long of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Rodney Ballance, Sr. of Manns Harbor, NC; two step-daughters, Garnet Duncan of Elizabeth City, NC and Joyce Tinker of St. Louis, MO; a sister, Beuna Ballance of Elizabeth City, NC; a brother, Royce Ballance of Chesapeake, VA; fourteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A graveside service will be held in the Westlawn Cemetery, Elizabeth City, NC on Friday, February 6, 2004 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo on Thursday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, then on Friday, 12:00 noon to 1:30 pm at Twiford Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City, NC.

Dennis Cullipher

KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC - DENNIS GRADY CULLIPHER, 78, of Kill Devil Hills, NC, died Friday, September 17, 2004 in the Outer Banks Hospital, Nags Head. Mr. Cullipher, born in Columbia, NC, was a retired Truck Driver with Nu-Car Carriers for 29 years. He was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, Columbia, NC, the Manteo Masonic Lodge # 521, Scottish Rite and Sudan Temple, Newbern, NC, an honorary member of Khedive Temple, Arab Patrol, Norfolk, VA. He was a lifetime member and Past President of Dare County Shrine Club, Past President, Past Vice President and Past Recording Secretary (2 terms) of U.A.W. Local #273, Norfolk, VA, and longtime member of Tunis Hunt Club, Ahoskie, NC.

Mr. Cullipher was the son of the late Benjamin H. and Iva Sutton Cullipher and was also preceded in death by a sister, Iona Holt and a brother, Harvey Cullipher.

He is survived by three daughters, Carol Rawls and Joan Canipe of Kill Devil Hills, NC and Denise Jones of Elizabeth City, NC; one brother, Juddy Cullipher of Dallas, TX; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service with Masonic Rites will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo on Sunday, September 26, 2004 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Bob Pitsch officiating. Ronald Brisco Creef

RONALD BRISCO CREEF, 90, of 1611 Edgewood Drive, formerly of Hoover Ave, South Norfolk Va. died Saturday, December 28, 2002 in the Albemarle Hospital. He was a native of Dare County and had retired from McAlister Towing Company. Mr. Creef was a member of the Seafarers Union, Woodmen of the World, and son of the late Willie Hinton and Sarah Duval Creef.

Mr. Creef is survived by one sister Myrtle C. Everton of Elizabeth City, NC, and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church St. Elizabeth City, NC by Rev. William Otis. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends in the lobby of the Funeral Home immediately following the service and other times at the residence 1611 Edgewood Drive in Elizabeth City.

Wilford "Bill" Creef

Elizabeth City, NC - Mr. Wilford Lee “Bill” Creef, age 79 of 900 Berea Church Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, May 3, 2003, at Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Creef was born in Dare County, NC, the son of the late Van O. and Lola Ann Alexander Creef, and was the husband of Fannie Alexander Creef. He was a retired Southern Baptist minister; retired from the Naval Air Rework Facility in Norfolk, VA with Materials and Supply; and was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Besides his wife, Mr. Creef is survived by one daughter, Anya C. Davis of Camden, NC; two sons, Franklin Creef of Colonial Heights, VA and William Creef of Elizabeth City, NC; three sisters, Grace Whidbee and Joyce Marsh of Elizabeth City, NC, Margie Bafford of Baltimore, MD; one brother, Archie Creef of Carrboro, NC; and two grandchildren, Caitlin Davis and Patrick Davis.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC. Burial will follow in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will be at the residence. Memorial donations may be made to Ocean View Baptist Church, Great Hope Baptist Church, or Berea Baptist Church.

JEAN DAVIS CREECH
Native of Currituck County, NC

JEAN DAVIS CREECH, of Manakin-Sabot, Va. died Tuesday, August 12, 2003, in a Richmond Hospital. She was born in Currituck County, NC to the late William B. and Julia M. Davis.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Charles V. Creech of the home, a daughter, Kimberly D. Creech, of Chapel Hill, NC; a sister, Dorothy D. Grandy of Grandy, NC; a brother, Richard F. Davis of Virginia Beach, VA. Also, surviving is an aunt, Louise Weatherly of Currituck, NC and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside memorial service will be conducted Tuesday, August 19, 2003 at 11:00am in the Morse Family Cemetery, Bells Island Road, Currituck, NC by Dr. Don Wheeless. The family will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Colon Grandy, 167 Barnard Rd., Grandy, NC. Twiford’s Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC is in charge of arrangements.

Jane Creamer

Kill Devil Hills, NC - Jane Catherine Barry Creamer, 75, of Kill Devil Hills, NC, died Friday, June 18, 2004 at her residence. She was born in Queens, NY to the late Edward and Helen Bertelson Barry and was the widow of John Matthew Creamer and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Creamer is survived by a daughter, Jane Wirth and husband Douglas of Kill Devil Hills, NC and three grandchildren, Ryan Wirth, Colleen Hogan, and Meryl Wirth all of Kill Devil Hills, NC.

A memorial service will be conducted on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at 1:00 PM at the Colington United Methodist Church by the Rev. Bob Pitsch. Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, NC is in charge of arrangements.

George Edward Crain, Jr.

Greenville, NC - George Edward Crain, Jr., age 55, of Greenville, NC, died Thursday, April 24, 2003. He was born in Pasquotank County son of the late George Edward Crain, Jr. and Myrtle Anderson Crain. He was an electrical engineer and a graduate of NC State University. He served in the US Coast Guard and was a member of First Christian Church.

Besides his mother he is survived by one daughter, Amanda C. Thompson, and one son, Thomas Crain both of Raleigh, NC; two brothers, Jerry and Gayland Crain both of Elizabeth City, NC.

Funeral service will be Saturday, April 26, 2003, at 2:00 pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Glenn Brigman officiating. Burial will be in Old Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends in lobby of the funeral home following the service. At other times the family will be at the residence, 628 Forest Park Road. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Patricia Horner Bair
Native of Elizabeth City, NC

Patricia Horner Bair, age 61, of 110 Five Forks Lane, Hampton, VA, died Saturday, July 10, 2004 at Sentara Careplex in Hampton, VA. She was born in Elizabeth City, NC, daughter of the late Frank W. Horner and Frances Shine Horner and was the wife of John Bair of the residence. She was a retired reading specialist for public schools in Hampton, VA.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Bair is survived by a daughter, Frances D. Siragusa and husband Joseph of Yorktown, VA; and two grandchildren, Will Siragusa and Julia Siragusa. She was preceded in death by a brother, Frank W. Horner, Jr.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at 11:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Father Henry Haske officiating. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, is in charge of funeral arrangements.
