Elvira Cox

Camden, NC - Elvira Hudson Cox, age 79, of 130 Sand Hills Road, Camden, NC, died Wednesday, August 11, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital. She was a native of Hyde County, NC, and was the daughter of the late Leland Hudson and Lillian Lorena Gibbs, and was the wife of the late Mark Elmer Cox. Mrs. Cox was former owner and operator of Cox Grocery, and was a member of Camden Church of Christ.

She is survived by one son, Lee Cox of Elizabeth City, NC; two sisters, Delores Harless of Camden, NC, and Stella Knabe and her husband Allen of WI; two grandchildren, Brandon and Kristen Cox.

A funeral service will be Sunday, August 15, 2004, at 3:00 PM in the Camden Church of Christ with Minister Mike McNamara officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC. At other times the family will be at the residence of, Delores Harless, 302 Country Club road, Camden, NC.

Herman Lee Cox, Sr.
Pasquotank County native

Mr. Herman Lee Cox, Sr., of 1912 Savin Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday morning, March 31, 2004, in the Albemarle Hospital after a short illness. He was a native and life long resident of Pasquotank County and the son of the late James Enoch Cox and Lillian Thornton Cox. He was a retired captain with the Elizabeth City Police Department with thirty-six years of service, a member of Corinth Baptist Church, and a member of the Pasquotank County Ruritan Club.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Vandegrift Cox of the residence; three sons, Herman Cox, Jr., and wife Madeline, and James W. Cox and wife Diana, all of Elizabeth City, NC, and Charles P. Cox and wife Cathy of Greenville, NC; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be 2:00 PM Friday, April 2, 2004, at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, with the Rev. Dr. Roy Head officiating. A private burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence of the son, Mr. & Mrs. Herman L. Cox, Jr., 104 Timber Trail, Elizabeth City, NC. Memorial donations may be made to Corinth Baptist Church Building Fund, 1035 US 17 South, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Don Bailey

Frisco, NC - Don Michael Bailey, 46, died on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Bailey was born in Shelby, MS and worked with the NC DOT Ferry Division. He attended Frisco Assembly of God, was a 1977 graduate of Cape Hatteras High School and was a life long Hatteras Island wrestler. Mr. Bailey was the son of the late Frederick Franklin Bailey and the late Doris Lott Bailey.

He is survived by one daughter, Doris Suzanne Bailey of Frisco and one sister, Betty Bailey Barnett also of Frisco; his former wife, Suzy Bailey Miller of Frisco;

A Celebration of Life will be held at Little Grove Methodist Church in Frisco on Saturday, March 13, 2004 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Roger Barnett officiating. Burial will take place in the Barnett Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Betty Barnett, 53132 Hwy 12 in Frisco on Friday from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM and at other times.

Twiford’s Island Chapel, Hatteras, is assisting the family with these arrangements.

Ruby Barton Costella
Native of Cheshire, England

Mrs. Ruby Mary Barton Costella, age 63, of 810 North 343, Camden, NC, died Sunday, February 1, 2004, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Costella, a native of Cheshire, England, was the wife of Anthony Patrick Costella of the residence and the daughter of the late William Lucas Barton and Anna Louise Mugford Barton. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of England.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Susan May Webb of Atoka, TN, and Angela Dawn Williams of Tucson, AZ; two sons, Phillip Roy Pelling of Tyner, NC, and Simon Paul Basham of Sussex, England; a sister, Dorothy Joan Shepherd of Devon, England; a brother, Thomas Henry Barton of Sussex, England; and seven grandchildren.

The body is being cremated and no memorial services are planned. The cremated remains are to be scattered on English soil.

Luciano Vito Corbo

South Mills, NC - Luciano Vito Corbo, age 74, of 405 Beechnut Avenue, South Mills, NC, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003 in Albemarle Hospital. He was born in New Rochelle, NY to the late Dominic and Anna Maniscalco Corbo and was the husband of Gloria Francia Corbo of the home. He retired from General Motors, was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and was a veteran of the U. S. Marines.

Besides his wife, Mr. Corbo is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Corbo of Nags Head, NC; three sons, Kenneth Corbo and wife Donna of Currituck, NC, Larry Corbo of Tobyhanna, PA, and Christopher Corbo and wife Christina of Currituck, NC; and six grandchildren, Kristy, Antony, Brianna, Allyson, Christopher, and Jeremy Corbo.

A Memorial Mass will be conducted on Friday, May 2, 2003 at 3:00 PM at Holy Family Catholic Church by Father Jim Buchholz. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, c\o Hazel Anderson, 106 South Ashe Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

John B. Copley

Elizabeth City, NC - John Bernard Copley, age 76, of 1305 Crescent Drive, Elizabeth City, NC died Friday, May 23, 2003, at Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Copley was born in West Virginia, the son of the late Albert and Kathleen Kay Stanhagen Copley and the husband of Annette Rogers Copley. He was retired from the US Postal Service; a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose where he had served as Past President for the state of NC 1978 –79 and past Govenor of the local Elizabeth City lodge # 1847. He earned his Pilgrim Degree in 1981. Mr Copley was also a member of the NC Beach Buggy Association the Elizabeth City Surf Fishing Club and Pine Lakes Country Club. He was a volunteer for many organizations, Muscular Distrophy where he was once the Regional Director, Albemarle Acadamy Football Coach from 1969 – 1973, Elizabeth City Volunteer Fire Dept. The American Red Cross and the EC Boys club.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Janne Copley Mills and husband Scott of Elizabeth City, NC; one son, David Kenneth Copley and wife Linda of Elizabeth City, NC; one brother, Raymond Kenneth Copley of New Bern, NC; two grandchildren John Michael Mills, Thomas Scott Mills, one great grandchild Dustin Scott Mills

A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at 10:00 AM at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Jim McGee officiating. A private burial will follow in Gates County. The family will be at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to ones Favorite charity

Louise Richardson Baker

Louise Richardson Baker, age 82 of 202 Bayshore Dr., Elizabeth City, NC died Monday, December 31 at her residence. She was born in Pasquotank Co., NC, daughter of the late Charlie A. Richardson and the late Martha Pierce Richardson Palmer and was the widow of Willard F. Baker. Mrs. Baker was a life long member of Newbegun United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years, was a member of the Ladies’ Missionary Group, and most recently, served on the Worship Committee. She retired as a bookkeeper for Cader Harris and Sons.

Mrs. Baker is survived by a daughter, Florence B. Rush, and husband, Ben, of Seaford, VA; a son, Willard K. Baker, and wife, Irene, of Lawrenceville, GA; two sisters, Ruth R. Winslow of Chesapeake, VA and Ann Halbert of Elizabeth City, NC; three brothers, Willis O. Richardson of Chesapeake, VA, Marshall J. Richardson of Radford, VA, and Charlie A. Richardson, Jr. of Rocky Mount, VA; five grandchildren, Kent, Link, and Scott Baker and Teresa and Jay Rush and six great grandchildren, Trey, Colton, Samantha and Richard Baker and Joelle and Julia Rush. She was predeceased by a sister, Virginia R. Cutrell.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, January 3, 2003 at 11:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC with Rev. William H. Otis officiating. Burial will be in the New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will be at the residence. Memorial donations may be made to Newbegun United Methodist Church, 465 Dry Ridge Rd., Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Nellie Mae Owens Coppersmith

Mrs. Nellie Mae Owens Coppersmith, age 82, formerly of Taylor’s Beach, Camden, NC, died Thursday, December 19, 2002 at Winslow Memorial Nursing Home. Mrs. Coppersmith, a native of Camden County, NC, was the widow of Harry Washington Coppersmith, Sr., and the daughter of the late Walter Doyle Owens and Rovena Holmes Owens. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. She worked for 30 years as a waitress at Comstock’s Confectionary on Water Street in Elizabeth city, NC, and prior to that she worked as a waitress at the Virginia Dare hotel Restaurant.

Mrs. Coppersmith is survived by two sons, Harry W. Coppersmith, Jr., of Little River, SC, and Thomas Willard Coppersmith of Odenton, MD; a daughter, Wilhelmina Marie Coppersmith Blair of Fredericksburg, VA; three brothers, George Owens of Shirley, MA, Thomas W. Owens of Elizabeth City, NC, and Jim Owens of Little River, TX; six grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. She was predeceased by two brothers, Calvin Holmes Owens and Wid Owens.

A graveside service will be Sunday, December 22, 2002, at 2:30 PM in Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. David Combs officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

Debra Coppersmith

Elizabeth City, NC - Debra Jones Coppersmith, age 45, of 755 Creek Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, November 12, 2003 in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, daughter of the late Lorayne Jones Winslow, and was the wife of Jeff Coppersmith. She was a self employed, owner, operator of a cleaning service. She as a member of New Beginning Assembly of God Church.

Besides her husband she is survived by her step- parents, Mr. and Mrs. Otha Winslow, Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC; Maternal grandmother, Iola Jordan of Elizabeth City, NC; one daughter, Danielle Morse of Gates County, NC; one sister, Kim Fightmaster and husband Joey of Elizabeth City NC; one brother Mike Winslow of Elizabeth City, NC; and a special aunt, Iris Bundy.

Funeral service will be Friday, November 14, 2003 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends in lobby of the funeral home following the service. At other times the family will be at the residence of her mother-in-law Diane Coppersmith, 204 Joanna Drive, Elizabeth City, NC.

George Copeland, Jr.

DEWEY GEORGE COPELAND, JR., age 61 of 2012 West Main Street Extended, Elizabeth City, NC, died Thursday, December 4, 2003, at Duke Medical Center of complications from a double lung transplant. He was a native of Pasquotank County, the son of the late Dewey George and Mrs. Louvenia Simpson Copeland, Sr. and the husband of Elizabeth Grimes Copeland for 40 years of the residence. Mr. Copeland was a manager for the IXL Furniture Manufacturing Company and a Veteran of the United States Air Force.

Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, Terry Copeland of Elizabeth City, NC, Mike Copeland and his wife Julie of Camden, NC; two sisters, Ruth Fowler and Lois Elliott both of Elizabeth City, NC; one brother, Charles Copeland of Elizabeth City, NC; two grandchildren, Cody and Blayne Copeland. He was preceeded in death by a son Jeff and a brother Andrew.

Funeral services will be Monday morning December 8, 2003 at 11:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City with the Rev. Paul Grubbs and the Rev. Lee Porter. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to George Copeland Transplant Fund, % Gateway Bank, PO Box 1908, Elizabeth City, NC 27906-1908.

Bernice Copeland

Bernice Marie Copeland, 79, formerly of Elizabeth City and a resident of Wilkes-Barre, PA since 1992, died Saturday, March 27, 2004, in the Valley Crest Nursing Home, Wilkes-Barre, PA. Miss Copeland was born in Elizabeth City, NC to the late Claude Linwood and Sallie Frances Thompson Copeland. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Elizabeth City.

She is survived by two brothers, Shelton Copeland of Hampton, VA and Richard Copeland of Wilkes-Barre, PA.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at 2:00pm in Twiford Funeral Home’s Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the New Hollywood Cemetery. The family suggests that memorial gifts be made to the First Christian Church, 701 Parsonage St., Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Edwin Ferebee Aydlett, Jr.
Pasquotank County Native

Edwin Ferebee Aydlett, Jr., age 82 of 1504 Parkview Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, in Elizabeth City. A native of Pasquotank County, NC, he was the widower of Mary Blane Justus Aydlett and the son of the late Edwin Ferebee Aydlett and Essie Poag Aydlett. He was a Baptist, a member of Eureka Masonic Lodge #317 AF & AM, the Scottish Rites New Bern Consistory #3, and the York Rite Bodies, and a member of the Sudan Shriners.

Mr. Aydlett is survived by a daughter, Mary Ann Aydlett of the residence; a step-sister, Thelis Jones of Ahoskie, NC; a brother-in-law, William Allen Martin, Sr., of Greensboro, NC; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a little canine companion Nellie.

A graveside memorial service will be Saturday, July 19, 2003, at Old Holly- wood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence and memorial donations may be made to the Masonic Home for Children in Oxford, NC.

Bonnie Cooper
Native of Tyrell County, NC

Bonnie Basnight Cooper, age 77, of 221 Poplar Drive, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, September 5, 2003 at Winslow Memorial Nursing Home. A native of Tyrell County, NC, she was born the daughter of the late Bill and Sudie Cullipher Basnight, and was the wife of William Cooper of the residence. Mrs. Cooper was a registered nurse and worked in home health care, and was a Pentecostal.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Cooper is survived by: one daughter Bonnie Morton of Kenly, NC; one brother Cecil Basnight of Elizabeth City, NC; and one grandson Brannon Morton of Kenly, NC.

A funeral service will be conducted on Monday, September 8, 2003 at 10:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Steve Strickland officiating. Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home following the service, and at other times at the residence.

Cyrus Cooley, Jr.

Nags Head, NC - Cyrus Eugene Cooley, Jr., 82, of Britthaven of Outer Banks, died Sunday, March 14, 2004. He was born in Chicago, IL to the late Cyrus Eugene and Mary Lois Matthews Cooley. He was a retired executive in the textile industry, a member of the Outer Banks Baptist Church, a member of the Gideon’s International, and a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during World War II and the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Cooley is survived by three daughters, Cathleen Ward of Memphis, TN, Susan Cooley of Manhattan, NY, and Catherine Ennis of Kill Devil Hills, NC; one sister, Sarah Cottle of Bartlesville, OK; one brother, Charles Cooley of Sommerville, TN; and several grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Corinne Bussey.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Gideon’s International. Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, NC is in charge of arrangements.

Dorathy Cook

DUCK, NC - DORATHY MAY HOLMES COOK, 79, of Duck, NC died Sunday, July 11, 2004 in a Norfolk, Va. hospital. Mrs. Cook, born in Boston, MA, was a retired contract manager for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture and attended the Duck United Methodist Church. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Lillian Edith Holms.

Mrs. Cook is survived by her husband, Robert Cook of the residence and a nephew, Richard Holmes of Columbus, GA.

A private memorial service was held on Sunday, July 11, 2004.

Alice Marie Sawyer Baker
Pasquotank County native

Alice Marie Sawyer Baker, age 71, of 1339 Bluff Point Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, April 11, 2003, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Baker, a native of Pasquotank County, NC, was the widow of Jesse James Baker and the daughter of the late Mack Bell Sawyer and Lina Harrington Sawyer Brickhouse. She was a member of the Salvation Army Church and was an inserter for the Daily Advance.

Mrs. Baker is survived by two daughters, Tina Marie Batteiger of the residence and Margaret Lynn McNary of South Mills, NC; two sons, Mark Albert Baker and Thomas Andrew Murrell both of Elizabeth City, NC; a brother Thomas Mack Sawyer, Sr., of Elizabeth City, NC; and seventeen grandchildren.

A graveside funeral service will be Monday, April 14, 2003, at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery at 11:00 AM with Minister Oliver Cartwright officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel and at other times at the residence of her brother, Thomas Mack Sawyer, Sr., 688 Body Road, Elizabeth City, NC.

Helen G. Cook

DUCK, NC - HELEN GIFFORD COOK, who formerly resided at Bayberry Bluff, Duck, NC passed away on Thursday, April 1, 2004 in Britthaven Nursing Home. She was born June 27, 1907 in Niles, Ohio, was married icon to the late Rudolph Harry Cook, Sr. and had been a resident of the Outer Banks for 50 years. She was a member and strong supporter of the Duck United Methodist Church where a Memorial Service will be held in the near future. She is survived by a niece, Carol Reapsummer and other relatives in Ohio, step-daughters, Rosemary Via and Ellen Bray and a step-son, Gerald Cook.

George Conway

COLINGTON HARBOUR, NC - GEORGE WILLIAM CONWAY, 79, of Colington Harbour, NC died Sunday, February 22, 2004 in an Elizabeth City hospital. Mr. Conway, born in Brooklyn, NY, was a retired Manager with NYNEX Phone Company. He was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and was a WWII veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was the son of the late George and Elizabeth Vincent Conway.

Mr. Conway is survived by his wife, Rose Todaro Conway of the residence; a son, George Conway and wife, Barbara of Kill Devil Hills, NC; and two grandsons, Christopher and Matthew Conway.

Funeral services will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo on Thursday, February 26, 2004 at 4:00 pm with Father Joseph Klaus officiating. Entombment will be in the Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216 Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216.
