Myron Willis Chamberlin

Myron Willis Chamberlin, age 95, of 58 Hickory Trail, Southern Shores, NC, died Sunday, December 8, 2002 in Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Three Rivers, MA, son the late Myron Kinney and Fannie E. Calkins Chamberlin. He was the widower of Helen Hendrie Chamberlin. Mr. Chamberlin was a retired Civil Service worker for the US Naval Oceanographic Office in Norfolk, VA and served as a Merchant Marine during World War II serving with the Esso Company. He was a First Mate on the SS Abrams which was torpedoed off the coast of Hatteras during World War II. He graduated from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, and was a member of the Thomas Lodge A.F. & A.M.

Mr. Chamberlin is survived by a stepson, Robert Kettell and his wife Carolyn of Cincinnati, Ohio; several nieces and nephews; three step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Massachusetts. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Thurman Cook Chalk

Thurman C. Chalk, age 55, of 125 Petunia Road, Maple, NC, died Saturday, December 28, 2002 at his residence. He was born in Elizabeth City, NC, the son of the late Dennis and Ruth Hollar Chalk. He was a mobile home contractor, a Baptist, and served in the U.S. National Guard.

Mr. Chalk is survived by a daughter, Tanya Chalk and husband Kevin Markham of Raleigh, NC; two sons, Denny Chalk and wife Nikki of Maple, NC, and Colt Chalk of Moyock, NC; a daughter, Angel Hernandez of Greensboro, NC; one sister Denise Carraway of Snow Hill, NC; one brother Dennis Chalk, Jr. of Moyock, NC; and two grandchildren, Tighe and Julianna Chalk.

A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, January 2, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Moyock Baptist Church by the Rev. Vic Ramsey. Burial will follow in the Moyock Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence.

Jay W. Cassidy

AVON, NC - JAY WILLIAM CASSIDY, 67, of Avon, NC went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 29, 2004. He was born March 27, 1937 in Stoystown, PA, son of the late George W. Cassady and Rhea Grace Zimmerman Cassady Cotter.

Mr. Cassidy was a 1955 graduate of Shanksville Stoney Creek High School. He attended 3 years at California State College, studying Industrial Arts, attended Penn State University and University of Pittsburgh earning a Real Estate License, and studied accounting at Cambria Rowe in Johnstown, PA. Mr. Cassidy was self-employed in the Fuel Oil Business for 10 years, a Psychiatric Aide at Somerset State Hospital for 7 years, an Independent Contractor with Somerset Daily American, delivering the Somerset County Shopper for 14 years. He was employed for 3 years with County Market, Somerset, 3 years with Protective Services, Inc., Johnstown, PA and, most recently, with Food Lion in Avon, NC from 1995 to present. He was a member of Boy Scouts of America Troop 153, Buckstown, PA, a member of Friedens Lutheran Church, Friedens, PA and attended the Buxton United Methodist Church, Buxton, NC.

Mr. Cassidy is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mary Belle West Cassidy of the residence; four step-daughters, Linda Stahlman and husband, Paul of Fairmount City, PA, Debra Hoffman and husband, Ronald of Laurens, SC, Beverly Whited and husband, Rodney of Russell, PA, and Susan Coughenour and husband, John of Berlin, PA; eleven step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren; one niece and two nephew, and an aunt, Edna Wagner of Berlin, PA; and a brother, Barry Lee Cassady.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at Buxton United Methodist Church on Sunday, May 9, 2004 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation, the Buxton United Methodist Church, Dare Home Health and Hospice, Dare County EMS or to the church of one’s choice.

Memorial service to be held at Friedens Lutheran Church, Friedens, PA to be announced at a later date.

CDR. HENRY GARLON CASSEL
USCG RETIRED

Henry Garlon Cassel, CDR USCG (retired) aged 88 of S. Hughes Blvd. Elizabeth City, NC, passed away February 16, 2003

CDR. Cassel was born in Newnan, GA, and moved to Sylacauga, AL, where he lived and attended school. He was the son of late Lonnie Wales Cassel and Mary Morrow Cassel. He was the husband of Martha Ives Cassel for 59 years.

CDR. Cassel served in the United States Coast Guard as an Aircraft Pilot from 1939-1969 and logged over 10, 000 hour of flying. During this time he participated in numerous Air-Sea rescues and was awarded several commendations.

He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.

He is survived by his half brother Lonnie Wales Cassel of Alabama; two sister in laws, Carolyn Scott and husband Bill of Palm Bay, FL; Annie Horton and husband, Jack of Elizabeth City, NC; several nieces and nephews. His grandmother, Evie Pearl Cassel predeceased him.

Services will be held Wednesday, February 19, 2003 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Melanie Cartwright
ASSISTANT CLERK OF COURT, CAMDEN COUNTY

CAMDEN NC - MELANIE ANN “MEL” WOOD CARTWRIGHT, age 46 of 186 Country Club Road, Camden NC went home to join her Heavenly Choir, Thursday June 24, 2004. She was a member of Sawyer’s Creek Baptist Church, a member of the choir, the Performing Arts Singing Group and the Middle Baptist Women. Over the years she had served on various committees and was very involved with the youth. Mel was the daughter of Thomas Wood Sr. of Camden NC, and the late Barbara Dowdy Wood, and the wife of Danny T. Cartwright of the home.

Besides her husband and father she is survived by one son, Juston Cartwright of the home; one brother Thomas Wood Jr. and wife Kathy of Camden NC; her mother in law Nell Cartwright “Mamaw” of Camden NC; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon, June 27, 2004, at 3:00 PM in Sawyer’s Creek Baptist Church. Entombment will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. At other times the family will be at the residence. Grover Cartwright

Shiloh, NC - Grover Gilbert Cartwright, age 73, of Avery Drive, Shiloh, NC, died Saturday, June 19, 2004, at his residence. Born in Pasquotank County, NC, he was the son of the late John H. and Mary Gilbert Cartwright, and the husband of Marie Elliot Cartwright of the residence. He was retired from Smithfield’s Packing Company where he was a salesman, and from Mildred’s Florist where he was co-owner. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Eureka Masonic Lodge #317 AF&AM; , York Rite Bodies, Sudan Shrine Temple, B.P.O. Elks #856, Improved Order of Red Men Pasquotank Tribe #8. He had served in the U.S. Air Force.

Besides his wife, Mr. Cartwright is survived by: one step daughter Margaret Williams Vann of Virginia Beach, VA; one step son Henry Marvin Williams of Portsmouth, VA; four step grandchildren, and one step great grandchild, two nephews John Cartwright of Raleigh NC, Thomas Cartwright of Atlanta GA He was predeceased by one stepson Charles Richard Williams one sister Alice Thessin and one brother John W. Cartwright.

Graveside services will be conducted on Tuesday June 22, 2004 at 1:00 P.M. in Old Hollywood Cemetery with Rev. Jim McGee officiating. Masonic Rites will also be held at the Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence and also at the Cemetery immediately following the service. Parker Cartwright

Kill Devil Hills - Self described optimistic realist, Parker Sherlock Cartwright, 14, died on Monday, January 19, 2004, from the effects of West Nile Encephalitis. He was the son and youngest child of Landra S. and Randy M. Cartwright of Kill Devil Hills. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his 2 sisters, Lindy and Stacey of the home. Also surviving are his “Grammy” and “Granddaddy”, Lina and Linwood Sherlock, and his “Grandma”, Josephine Cartwright, of Elizabeth City.

Parker was born February 23, 1989 and lived in Kill Devil Hills all his life. He had attended Manteo High School for two days. In May, 2002, he was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia. He pursued a winning struggle against the disease based on his newly found motto, “You don’t get to choose your fate, you only get to choose how you respond to it.” In August, 2003, he was stricken with West Nile and never recovered.

Funeral services will be held at St. Andrews By the Sea Episcopal Church in Nags Head, N.C., on Friday, January 23, 2004, at 11:00 AM. A reception will be provided for those who wish to share publicly their memories of Parker. Burial will follow in Elizabeth City and a visitation will be held afterwards at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Sherlock from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM. For those who wish to contribute in lieu of flowers, the family would like for contributions to be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 404 Colley Avenue, Norfolk, VA 23507 and the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, 601 Children’s Lane, Norfolk, VA 23507.

The family would especially like to thank the numerous doctors, nurses, and staff members of CHKD for their untiring efforts and loving care.

Nettie Mae Cartwright

Camden, NC - Nettie Mae White Cartwright, age 90, of 345 South 343, Camden, died Wednesday, August 13, 2003. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, daughter of the late John Henry Thomas White and Sally Stallings White Rogerson, and the wife of the late Percy Vreeland Cartwright. Mrs. Cartwright attended Sawyer’s Creek Baptist Church.

She is survived be one daughter Martha Jackson and her husband, Doug of Winterville, NC; one son Douglas Cartwright and his wife, Kathryn of Camden, NC; five grandchildren, Terry J. Gatlin and husband Asa of Merrit, NC, Rebecca C. Scaff and husband Preston of Elizabeth City, NC, Rick Jackson and wife, Pam of Winterville, NC, Dalvin Jackson of wife Elke of Ayden, NC, Douglas Cartwright, Jr. and wife Beth of Great Falls, MT; and eleven great grandchildren. Mrs. Cartwright was predeceased by twelve brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be Friday, August 15, 2003 at 3:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Philip Wood officiating. Burial will be in the Quaker Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service. At other times the family will be at the home of Douglas and Kathryn Cartwright, 347 South 343, Camden, NC. Memorial donations may be made to one’s favorite charity.

Marie Brock

Elizabeth City, NC - Marie Freeman Brock, age 90, of Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, January 12, 2004, in Albemarle Hospital. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC, daughter of the late Thomas Linwood Freeman, Sr. and Lillie Sawyer Freeman, and was the wife of the late James Kinch Brock, Sr. Mrs. Brock was a retired Insurance Agent for Charlotte Liberty Insurance, and was a member of Victory Baptist Church.

She is survived by one son, Tommy Brock and his wife Anne of Elizabeth City, NC; five grandchildren and two step grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and three step great grandchildren; five step great-great grandchildren.

Memorial service will be Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Reggie Parker officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Park Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the service. At other times the family will be family will be at the residence of Tommy Brock, 1004 Rivershore Road, Elizabeth City, NC. David Brockway

Elizabeth City, NC - David Russell “Shorty” Brockway, age 67, of 1520 Weeksville Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, February 18, 2004 in the Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Farmington, MI, and was the son of the late Russell Milton Brockway and Lorna Belle Sutton Brockway. He was the husband of Lillian Reyes Brockway of the residence. He was a graduate of Baguio University in the Philippines, with a masters in commerce, and was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church. He worked as an Aviation Structural Mechanic with the USCG, and was a member of the CPOA.

Besides his wife, Mr. Brockway is survived by one daughter, Mary Anne Blake and her husband, David of MI; one son, Nelson David Brockway of MI; one sister, Barbara Brockway Woznik and her husband Gene of TN; one brother in law, John Sullivan; two grandchildren, Spencer and Arielle Blake. He was predeceased by one sister, Beverly Brockway Sullivan. Also surviving is an extended family, Aida and Richard Morris, Herminia Bulatao, Arvin and Arianne Bennie, Patrick, Emmanuel, and Edmund Nelson, Elena and Visitacion.

A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, February 24, 2004, at 2:00 PM in Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Jim Buchholz officiating. The family will receive friends Monday evening, 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence, 1520 Weeksville Road, Elizabeth City, NC. Memorial donations may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church, 1453 N. Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909, or to the Knights of Columbus.

Carrie B. Morgan Brothers
Pasquotank County Native

Carrie B. Morgan Brothers, age 82, of 117 Gregory Lane, Hertford, NC, and formerly of Northside Road, Elizabeth City, died Tuesday, August 12, 2003 at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Brothers, a native of Pasquotank County, was the widow of Elbert Lee Brothers and the daughter of the late John Shelton Morgan and Sophia Pritchard Morgan. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and a homemaker.

Mrs. Brothers is survived by two daughters, Kaye Hurdle, and husband Jack, and Susan Pierce, and husband James, all of Hertford, NC; a sister, Gussie Layden of Elizabeth City, NC; four grandchildren, Michael Hurdle, Mark Hurdle, Michelle Winslow, and Kendall Pierce, all of Hertford, NC; and five great grandchildren.

A graveside funeral service will be Thursday, August 14, 2003, at 11:00 AM at Highland Park Cemetery with the Rev. William Holmes officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and at other times at the residence of the granddaughter, Mr. & Mrs. Michael Winslow, 222 Ainsley Road, Hertford, NC. Memorial donations may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 1822 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

John L. Brothers

VA Beach – John Lewis Brothers, 92, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 23, 2004 with family members at his side. Mr. Brothers was born in Princess Anne County to the late Benjamin Luther and Ida Mitchell Brothers. He was retired from the VA Beach Utility Department, and a member of the Church of Christ at Creeds.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Lianae S. Brothers; one daughter, Jeanette L. Goins and husband Jim of Richmond; four sons, William L. Brothers and wife, Faye of Richmond, John A. Brothers and wife, Nita of Chesterfield County, VA, James M. Brothers and wife, Susan of Chesapeake and Carey R. Brothers and wife, Kathy of VA Beach; fifteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 am at Rosewood Memorial Park with Minister John Boyer officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake on Tuesday from 7:00 until 8:00 pm.

Lecretia "Lou" Waller Brown

Elizabeth City, NC - Lecretia “Lou” Waller Brown, age 80, of Creek Road, Elizabeth City, NC died at Winslow Memorial Nursing Home on Saturday, February 22, 2003. Born in Columbus, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late LaMonte Bradford and Mable Lake Waller. She was a Cosmetologist, and a Catholic.

Mrs. Brown is survived by: one daughter Odella Romaine, and husband Mike of Elizabeth City, NC; two sons Jim Henry Baker and wife Tereasa of Fayetteville, NC, and Owen Ray Baker of Nome Alaska; two grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

No services are planned at this time. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is assisting the family.

DONNA NEWBY BROWN
Raleigh, NC native

Donna Newby Brown, 75, for #73 Baytree Apts., Manteo, NC died Monday, September 20, 2004, in the Sentara Barco Nursing Home. She was born in Raleigh, NC to the late Ashton Barrett Newby and Bessie Helm Newby and was the widow of the late George Sherbourne Brown. She was a former employee of Ocean Side Court in Nags Head, NC.

Mrs. Brown is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Kim Brown of Virginia Beach, VA and Ginger Lee Brown of Missouri; three sons, Michael Brown of South Carolina, Victor Brown of California and Allen Brown of Virginia.

The body has been cremated and no services are planned at the present time. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC is assisting the Brown family.

F. George Brown

NAGS HEAD, NC - F. GEORGE BROWN, 77, died Wednesday, December 3, 2003 in the Outer Banks Hospital. Born and raised in Bridgeport, CT, George served in WWII in the U.S. Navy. Active in Connecticut politics, he was Alderman for the City of Bridgeport, as well as later serving as the Connecticut State Tax Commissioner. George worked many years for Edison Electric Institute, first in New York City and then in Washington, DC. Upon retirement, he relocated to the Outer Banks and worked in real estate for 10 years.

George is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sally; his four children, Doug Brown and his wife, Bonnie of Kill Devil Hills, Debbie Brown of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, Pam Robertson of Kill Devil Hills, and Martha Thomas and her husband, Billy of Kitty Hawk; and five grandchildren, Frieda and Lucy Brown, Danny and Matthew Robertson, and Kevin Thomas.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, December 5, 2003 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Kitty Hawk, at 10:00 am. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Funeral Home, Manteo on Thursday, December 4, from 3:00 to 6:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 114 Kitty Hawk Rd., (P.O. Box 510) Kitty Hawk, NC 27949.

Barton Brown

MANTEO, N.C. - BARTON RILEY BROWN, 58, of Manteo, died, Sunday, January 18, 2004, at his residence. Mr. Brown was born in Los Angeles, California and was a retired state traffic officer with the California Highway Patrol. Mr. Brown was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxillary where he taught classes and he worked part time with Manteo Marine. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Coast Guard and loved fishing and the ocean and held and interest in aviation.

Mr. Brown was the son of Mary Adams Brown of Oceanside, Ca and the late James Harlan Brown and the husband of Patricia Trautman Brown.

Besides his wife and mother, Mr. Brown is survived by one daughter; Amy Brown and one son; Michael Brown both of Manteo. He was pre-deceased by two brothers; James Craig Brown and Brian Adams Brown.

Interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the California Highway Patrol Widows and Orphans Fund, 2030 V. Street, Sacramento, California 95818 or Feline Hope Animal Shelter 843 Herbert Perry Road, Kitty Hawk, N.C. 27949, Dare County SPCA, P.O. Box 1000, Manteo, N.C. 27954 or the Charity of one’s choice. W. Carson Browning

Southern Shores, NC - W. Carson Browning, Jr., age 84, of Ocean Blvd., Southern Shores, NC, and Wesley Chapel, FL, died Thursday, June 10, 2004 in the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Browning was a native of Logan, WV, and was the son of the late Willard Carson Browning and Osa Bell Browning. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II serving in the Pacific Theater. He served as Post Master of the Logan, WV post office, and at one period he was the youngest postmaster of a first class office. In 1961 he moved to Washington, DC, as Director of Customer Relations, and retired as Director of Postmasters and Rural Appointments. He was the originator of the concept for the postal service zip code system. He was active in numerous community projects in Logan, WV, and served as disaster chairman of the local Red Cross. Mr. Browning was a member of the Duck United Methodist Church, a charter member of the North Banks Rotary Club, and was a Paul Harris Fellow and a charter member of the Duck Woods Country Club. During his service with the U.S. Post Office Department he dedicated the old post office in Kitty Hawk, NC.

Survivors include his wife, Lou Anne Morris Browning; four daughters, Catherine Browning Noone of Southern Shores, NC, Kristin Browning Clark of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Lynn Browning Kline and husband Larry of Bethesda, MD, Paige Browning Saglio and husband Dane of Boyds, MD; one son, W. Carson Browning, III of the home; one sister Wilma Browning Price of Sun City Center, FL; nine grandchildren, Erin Noone Walker, Colin Noone and wife Samatha, Meredith Clark, Kyle Clark, Margaret Ann Kline, and twins Carson and Larry Kline, Eric Saglio and Allison Saglio; and two great-grandchildren Kaitlyn Noone and Jayne Walker.

A memorial service will be held Monday, June 21, 2004 at 11:00 AM at the Duck United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Clift officiating. The family will gather at the Duck Woods Country Club following the memorial service. The family suggests that memorial contribution be directed to the Duck United Methodist Church Building Fund or to the Church Food Pantry Fund, PO Box 8010, Duck, NC 27949. John Donald Broyles, Sr.

Elizabeth City, NC - John Donald Broyles, Sr., age 62, of 1513 Nixonton Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Norfolk, VA, son of the late Clarence Newton and Annie Elizabeth Ship Broyles. He was the husband of Lucretia O’Neal Broyles of the residence. Mr. Broyles was the former owner and operator of Johnny’s Auto and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Mr. Broyles is survived by two daughters, Kathryn B. Hamilton of Salem, SC, and Sandra B. Rast of Chesapeake, VA; five sons, John D. Broyles, Jr., William “ Billy” Broyles, James Broyles, Robert Broyles, Larry Broyles, all of Elizabeth City, NC; one sister, Barbara B. Stevenson of Lusby, MD; two brothers, Clarence Newton Broyles, Jr. of Cape Charles, VA, and William A. Broyles, of Elizabeth City, NC; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was predeceased by one son, Alan Broyles.

Funeral service will be Friday, March 7, 2003 at 11:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel. The family will be at the residence on 1513 Nixonton Road. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
