Ruth Louise Beacham

KITTY HAWK, NC - RUTH LOUISE BEACHAM, 76, of Kitty Hawk, NC died Thursday, October 2, 2003 in Goldsboro, NC.

Ms. Beacham was born in Norfolk, Virginia and was the daughter of the late William Roy Beacham, Sr. and Mrs. Inez Gaimel Beacham of Kitty Hawk, NC.

Besides her mother, Ms. Beacham is survived by four sisters, Vera B. Breashears of Nags Head, NC, Alma B. Hayman and Melba B. Shannon, both of Kitty Hawk, NC and Shirley B. Shannon of Morgan’s Corner, NC; two brothers, William Roy Beacham, Jr. and Jerry H. Beacham, both of Kitty Hawk, NC.

A graveside service will be held in Austin Cemetery, Kitty Hawk, on Saturday, October 4, 2003 at 11:00 am with Rev. Richard Stone officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, POB 900, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949.

Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo, is assisting family with arrangements.

Aldean Beacham

Kitty Hawk - Aldean Beasley Beacham, 82 died Wednesday, August 27, 2003 at her residence.

Mrs. Beacham was born in Colington, NC and a former resident of Virginia Beach, VA for over 40 years.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Virginia Beach Assembly of God.

She was the daughter of the late Ray McClease Beasley and the late Henrietta Gaimel Beasley and was married icon to John LeLand Beacham, Jr. of the home for 63 years.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Beacham is survived by one daughter; Debra B. Snyder of Virginia Beach; three sons; Duane Beacham and John L. Beacham, III of Virginia Beach, VA and Don Beacham of Indiana, eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held in Austin Cemetery, Kitty Hawk on Sunday, August 31, 2003 at 3:00 pm with the Rev. Royce Beacham officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Memorial donations may be made to The Alzheimers Association, 400 Oberlin Road, Suite 208, Raleigh, NC 27605.

Elsworth Beacham
Resident of Hertford, NC

Elsworth Beacham, age 81, 112 Green Wood Lane, Hertford, NC, died Sunday, July 6, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital.

He was born in Jamesville, NC, son of late Willie Macon and Allie Moore Beacham and the husband of Eliza Cooper Beacham of the residence. He was a protestant.

Beside his wife, Mr. Beacham is survived by a step daughter, Alice S. Lamb of Hertford, NC; two step sons, Mercer Saunders of Hertford, NC, and Donald R. Saunders, Sr. of Hertford, NC; two sisters, Stella Sawyer and Bessie Gurganus; ten grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, and nine great great grandchildren; and a special friend, Nettie Umphlett.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 2003 at 2:00 pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Roland Cooper, Pastor Adron Modlin and Rev. Stuart Meads officiating.

Burial will be in New Hollywood Cemetery.

Following the service the family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, is in charge of funeral arrangements.

ALMA MARIE BERRY BATEMAN
Native of Norfolk, VA

Alma Marie Berry Bateman, 95 of 901 Halstead Blvd., Elizabeth City and a former resident of Halls Creek Road, died Thursday, January 22, 2004 in the Guardian Care Nursing Home.

She was born in Norfolk, VA to the late Willie F. Berry and Pat Cartwright Berry Cowell.

She was retired from Supak and a member of Union United Methodist Church where she was the oldest member.

Mrs. Batman was the widow of the late Claude Bateman.

She is survived by two daughters, Lucille Koval of Clearwater, FL and Dollie Trueblood of Elizabeth City; three sons, Claude Bateman, Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA, William “Bill” Bateman of Elizabeth City and Russell Bateman of Pahhrump, NV; two sisters, Erma McMillan of Pearson FL and Shirley Sawyer of Elizabeth City; 15 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, January 27, 2004, at 2:00pm in Twiford Memorial Chapel by Rev. Bill Otis.

Burial will be in the New Hollywood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends and relatives Monday evening from 7:00 to 8:30pm at Twiford Funeral Home, and also immediately following the funeral service in the lobby.

At other times, the family will be at the home of her daughter, Dollie Trueblood, 3053 Main St., Extd, Elizabeth City.

Evelyn L. Bays

Evelyn Lassiter Bays, 86, of Main St., Gatesville, NC died Thursday, January 30, 2003, at her residence surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Bays was born on September 4, 1916 in Gates County.

She was the daughter of the late Harry and Irene Lassiter and was the widow of Retired Army Master Sergeant Delbert H. Bays. Her only sister, Willie Marie Cummings preceded her in death.

She is survived by two daughters, Margaret Ann Tankovich and husband, Jim, of Herndon, VA. and Lillian Taylor and husband, Richard of Suffolk, VA, two granddaughters, Catherine and Elizabeth Tankovich.

Also, she is survived by a niece Sharron Cummings Hill and a nephew, Harvey F. Cummings, II.

Graveside services will be conducted Saturday, February 1, 2003, at 11:00am in the Eure Christian Church Cemetery by Rev. Wayne Gardner.

Viewing will be in the Miller Funeral Home, Main St., Gatesville on Friday, Jan. 31, 2003.

The family will receive friends and relatives at her residence, 217 Main Street, Gatesville.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest anyone wishing may make a memorial gift in her memory to may do so to either the Eure Christian Church, 875 NC 137, Eure, NC 27935, University Health Systems Hospice Care, 521 West Myers Street, Ahoskie, NC 27910 or to the Gates County Rescue Squad, Gatesville, NC 27938.

Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC is handling the funeral arrangements.

Alethia Baum

Alethia Aydlett Baum, age 80, of 119 Robert Street, Camden, NC, died Sunday, March 28, 2004, at the Sentara Norfolk Hospital.

Mrs. Baum, a native of Currituck County, NC was the widow of W. E. “Junior” Baum, and the daughter of the late Mark L. Aydlett and Alethia Owens Aydlett.

She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist church, the United Methodist Women, and the Currituck Christian Women.

Mrs. Baum is survived by a sister, Ruth Aydlett Stone of Powell’s Point, NC; two brothers, Guy Aydlett of Portsmouth, VA, and Mark R. Aydlett of Newport News, VA.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 31, at 11:00 AM at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Glenn H. McCraine officiating.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, and will greet friends in the Church Social Hall immediately following the service.

Burial will be in the Baum’s Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, PO Box 491, Grandy, NC 27939.

Shannon Baum

Kitty Hawk - Shannon Elizabeth Baum, was born Tuesday, February 3, 2004 at Chesapeake General Hospital and died very early Wednesday morning, February 4th at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters.

She is survived by her mother, Lisa Baum, a big sister, Jasmine; maternal grandparents, Tommy and Marie Baum; one uncle, T.J. and one aunt Nettie; maternal great-grandmother, Mary Baum; she was preceded in death by one maternal great-grandfather, Woodrow Wilson Baum.

A graveside service will be held at Austin Cemetery on Saturday, February 7, 2004 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Eugene McLawhorn officiating.

Twiford’s Funeral Home, Manteo, is assisting the family with these arrangements.

Crystal L. Baum

Crystal Leigh Baum, age 22, of 598 Creek Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, September 24, 2003, in the Albemarle Hospital.

Miss Baum was a native of Pasquotank County and the daughter of Hezekiah Jerome Baum and Nellie Mae Lambert Baum of the residence.

She was a student at COA and a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness.

Besides her parents she is survived by a half brother, Hezekiah James Baum of Travis City, MI; a maternal grandmother, Mable Lambert of Elizabeth City, NC; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2003 at 3:00 PM in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness.

The family will receive friends at the residence of the grandmother, Mable Lambert, 506 Glade Street, Elizabeth City, NC.

Memorial donations may be made to the family to help with funeral expenses.

Ethel Bateman

Shawboro, NC - Ethel Elizabeth Sanderlin Bateman, age 69, of Shawboro, NC, has left to be with God on August 25, 2004, in Albemarle Hospital.

She was a native of Pasquotank County, NC, and was the daughter of the late James Earl “Dick” Sanderlin, and Elizabeth Kight Sanderllin of Elizabeth City, NC.

She was the wife of Luther W. Bateman, Jr. of the residence, for 52 years.

She was a member of Perkins United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.

Besides her mother and husband she is survived by one daughter, Carol Cooper of Winfall, NC; three sons, Eugene Bateman and Tim Bateman both of Shawboro, NC, and Bobby Bateman of Hampton, VA; four sisters, Doris Berry of Camden, NC, Ruth Lee of Shawboro, NC, Peggy Outlaw of Grandy, NC, and Emily Norfleet of Colington, NC; one brother, James Earl “Buddy” Sanderlin of Shawboro, NC; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Donald Joseph Bateman, and a sister, Wilma Schmitz.

A funeral service will be Sunday, August 29, 2004 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Rev. Charles Wellons and the Rev. Emily Young officiating.

Burial will follow in the Sanderlin Cemetery. The family will be at the residence, 106 Sanderlin Road, Shawboro, NC.

Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Gene Batten
Native of Norfolk, VA

Thomas “Gene” “Big Bird” Batten, age 62, of 113 Marlas Way, Camden, NC, died Monday, March 29, 2004, at his residence.

Mr. Batten, a native of Norfolk, VA, was the husband of Janice Proffitt Batten of the residence and the son of the late Dodson Monroe Batten and Emma Davis Cofer Batten.

He was a retired high voltage electrician at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, a veteran of the US Army and the Virginia National Guard, a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and the Widow’s Son Masonic Lodge #75 AF & AM.

Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Belinda Sue Rupp, and husband Duane, of Franklin, VA, and Renee Batten Cowan, and husband Robert, of Suffolk, VA; and five grandchildren, John Shellito, April Shellito, Andrew Fisher, Tiffany Cowan, and Crystal Cowan.

A graveside funeral service with Masonic Rites will be Saturday, April 3, 2004, at 12 Noon at Meadow Brook Memorial Gardens in Suffolk, VA, with the Rev. David Combs officiating.

The family will receive friends Friday, April 2 at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City from 7:00 to 8:30 PM, and at other times at the residence.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 434 Fayetteville Street West, Raleigh, NC 27601.
