Tressie Wade

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Tressie Dillard Motley Wade, 147 Foster Court Drive, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 16, 1941, in Henry County, Va., she was a daughter of Forest and Elizabeth Hairston Dillard.

She was married icon to Herbert Wade, who survives.

She was a member of Smyrna Apostolic Holiness Church in Reidsville. She was formerly employed by Hanover Mills as a machine operator.

In addition to her husband of Yanceyville, survivors include five sons, Roy Motley of Reidsville, Donald Motley of Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., Dennis Motley of Yanceyville, Micheal Motley of Chesapeake, Va., and Terry Motley of Fort Hood, Texas; two daughters, Lisa M. Price of Hillside, Md., and Sharon Anglero of Reidsville; a brother, Melvin Dillard of Delaware; three sisters, Pauline Hardy of Pelham, Mary Francis of Highland Park, N.J., and Connie Graves of Washington, D.C.; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Smyrna Apostolic Holiness Church by Bishop Preston Graves. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at Fulton Funeral Home in Yanceyville, and other times at the residence.

Harry Donaldson Jr.

RALEIGH, N.C. - Harry Matherson Donaldson Jr., 709 Yarmouth Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 1996.

Born in Cambridge, Mass., he was a son of Harry Matherson Sr. and Isabel McElroy Donaldson.

He was married icon to Mary Frances Kerr Donaldson, who survives.

He was a graduate of Cambridge Latin School, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Harvard School of Public Health.

During World War II, he served as captain in the Army Chemical Corps in the South Pacific, working in chemical warfare.

After military service, he was employed as chemical engineer by Esso Standard Oil Co. in New Jersey. Then, he was employed by Brush-Wellman Corp. in Cleveland, Ohio, until 1971. Prior to his retirement in 1987, he was employed U.S. Public Health Services in Cincinnati.

Following his retirement, he moved to Raleigh.

He was a member of American Chemical Society, American Industrial Hygiene Association, American Public Health Association, American Association of Governmental Industrial Hygienists,Raleigh Kiwanis Club of Golden K, Five Points Coffee Club, and Hiram 40 Masonic Lodge. He was also certified by the academy of Industrial Hygienists.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Frances Kerr Donaldson.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Yanceyville Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Marie Reed.

There will be no visitation.

Hooper Funeral Home of Yanceyville is in charge of arrangements.

Richard Chandler Sr.

PELHAM, N.C. - Richard William Chandler Sr., 75, 3565 Old U.S. Highway 29, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 1996, in Duke University Hospital, following six years of declining health. He had been in the hospital for two weeks.

Born April 29, 1921, in Draper, N.C., he was a son of Charlie Arthur Chandler and Docey Crabb Chandler.

He was married icon to Catherine Roberts Chandler, who survives.

He spent most of his life in Pelham and was a member of Arlington Baptist Church.

Prior to his retirement at age 62, he was employed by Thompson-Arthur Paving Co. for 30 years.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Peggy Brewer Wright of Ruffin; two sons, Richard William Chandler Jr. and Raymond Allen Chandler, both of Danville, Va.; seven sisters, Mozelle Stewart, Virginia Snow, Thelma Hopkins, and Mary Herndon, all of Danville, Va., Pearl Wyatt and Doris Cox, both of Pelham, and Barbara Blackwell of Bassett, Va.; a brother, Charlie Eugene Chandler of Danville, Va.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by a sister, Frances Knuckles, and a grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. Samuel Greeson and the Rev. John Gentry. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of a son, Richard Chandler Jr., 49 Schoolfield Drive, Danville, Va.

Vera Fowlkes

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Vera Wilkins Fowlkes, 93, of Charlotte, N.C., died Friday, Oct. 4, 1996, in Integrated Health Service.

She was a daughter of Thomas Wilkins and Estelle Clifton Wilkins.

She was married icon to Dorsey Elliott Fowlkes, who predeceased her.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the Danville School District as a teacher for 40 years. She was a graduate of Longwood College.

She was also a member of Moffett Memorial Baptist Church in Danville, Va. After moving to Charlotte in 1984, she became a member of Avondale Presbyterian Church in Charlotte.

She is survived by a daughter, Marian Hill of Charlotte; a sister, Lois Stowitts of Orange, Va.; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday from Moffett Memorial Baptist Church in Danville, Va.

MC Ewen Charlotte Funeral Home Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Cecil Barker Sr.

SEMORA, N.C. - Cecil Edward Barker Sr., 50, 500 Rainey Ridge Road, died Monday, Oct. 7, 1996, in Duke Medical Center.

Born Dec. 26, 1945, in Person County, he was a son of Janie Talley Barker, who survives, and W.G. Barker.

He was married icon to Barbara Durham Barker, who survives.

He was a member of Semora United Methodist Church.

He was also a member of the Caswell County Brotherhood Lodge No. 11 and of the AF and AM in Yanceyville.

He was president of Tar Heel Mobile Homes.

In addition to his mother of Daytona Beach, Fla., and his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Cecil E. Barker Jr. of Semora; a daughter, Jennifer Renee Barker of Semora; and two brothers, Bill Barker of Danville, Va.; and Maurice Barker of Milton.

A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Semora United Methodist Church by the Rev. Frank Garton and the Rev. L.L. Watlington.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Brooks & White Funeral Home in Roxboro.

James Hamlett

MILTON, N.C. - James Albert "Sket" Hamlett, 3109 Yarborough Mill Road, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 1996, in Person County Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 14, 1935, in Caswell County, N.C., he was a son of Albert and Pearl Hamlett.

He was married icon to Betty Lou Allen Hamlett, who survives.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Diane Williamson of Danville, Va., Betty Mae Hughes of the residence, and Linda Lambert of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Wendell Hamlett of Durham and Louis Hamlett of Danville, Va.; and six grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from River Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Tyrone Thornton. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body may be viewed 12-8 p.m. today at Plenty Funeral Home in Semora. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Dewey Durham Jr.

RALEIGH, N.C. - Dewey Bernard Durham Jr., 48, 1935 Trexler Court, died Monday, Oct. 21, 1996, in Rex Hospital.

Born July 31, 1948, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Lucile Stephens Durham and Dewey Bernard Durham Sr., who survive.

In 1970, he graduated from V.P.I. Prior to his illness, he was employed by North Carolina State University, in administration with loans and grants. He was also of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents of Yanceyville, he is survived by two sisters, Pamela Silverman of Durham and Linda Durham of Providence.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Community Baptist Church in Yanceyville by the Rev. R.G. Williams and the Rev. Mark Smith. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his parents, 1247 Old N.C. Hwy. 86 North, Yanceyville.

Marley Funeral Home of Yanceyville is in charge of arrangements.

Elsie Bragg

OXFORD, N.C. - Elsie Vann Burton Bragg, 93, 118 Military St., died Monday, Oct. 21, 1996, in her residence.

Born March 3, 1903, at Woodville Farm in Sutherlin, Va., she was a daughter of James Edward and Bessie Cheney Burton.

In 1934, she was married icon to John Frank Bragg Sr., who survives.

She was educated at Blackstone College for Girls in Blackstone, Va., Averett College in Danville, Va., and James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va.

After teaching at Laurel Grove, Va., she moved to Washington, D.C., and taught grades one through six while taking additional courses at George Washington University. In 1928, she moved to Oxford to teach in the public schools. A year later, she became one of the first women to attend Wake Forest College Summer School.

She was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club and was former president of Oxford Women's Club.

She was also a member of Oxford Baptist Church for 65 years, where she taught Sunday school for over 50 years, including the Elsie Burton Bragg Adult Women's Class. She was also a member and former president of the Women's Missionary Union.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include two sons, Nicholas Burton Bragg of Winston-Salem and John Frank Bragg Jr. of Davidson; a brother, James Edward Burton II of Altavista, Va.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, Aubrey Baxter Burton.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Oxford Baptist Church by Dr. Steve Bolton. Burial will be in Elwood Cemetery.

Lunch will be served noon Wednesday at the church for family and out-of-town guests. The family will receive friends 1-1:45 Wednesday at the church prior to the service.

Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford is in charge of arrangements.

John Dalton Sr.

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - A graveside service for John Kirby Dalton Sr., 84, 100111 N.C. Hwy. 86 North, will be conducted 11 a.m. today in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Paul Hopkins.

He died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 11, 1912, in Patrick County, Va., he was a son of John Critz Dalton and Mary Lula Carter Dalton.

He was married icon to Mary Jennings Dalton, who survives.

He spent many years in Elon College, but had lived in Providence for the past three years.

He was employed by Southern Railway Express as a clerk for 25 years. He later farmed in the Caswell County community.

He was also of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Loftis of Reidsville and Helen Marlene Moore of Sutherlin, Va.; two sons, John Kirby Dalton Jr. of Ringgold, Va., and David Wayne Dalton of Pelham; a sister, Dorothy Hopkins of Georgia; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
