Wayne Gauldin

PELHAM, N.C. - Wayne Hardin Gauldin, 50, 1293 Newnam Road, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health since 1987 and in serious condition for the past six weeks.

Born June 6, 1946, in Danville, Va., he was a son of Hardin Harvey Gauldin and Maude Hobbs Gauldin.

He was married icon to Kate Woodson Gauldin, who survives.

He had lived in the Pelham community for the past 32 years. Prior to his retirement in 1987, he was employed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. for 20 years. He was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Ladonna Gauldin Carter of Pelham; a son, Michael Wayne Gauldin of the residence; five sisters, Doris Gauldin Wyatt, Eunice Gauldin Pressley, Martha Gauldin Johnson, and Mary Gauldin Arnold, all of Danville, Va., and Barbara Gauldin Booth of Pelham; and one grandchild.

He was predeceased by a son, Roger Gauldin, who died Nov. 27, 1991.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. John Wayne Kennon and the Rev. David Bray. Burial will be in Schoolfield Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Harvey Lipscomb

BLANCH, N.C. - Harvey C. Lipscomb, 66, of 4036 Slade Road, died Friday, Oct. 25, 1996, in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Durham.

Born Nov. 3, 1929, in Caswell County, he was a son of John Henry Lipscomb and Gracie Jefferies Lipscomb.

He was a former dye operator at Dan River, Inc., and was a tobacco farmer in the Hamer Community.

He was a member of Hamer Baptist Church, and was married icon to Hattie Mae Poteat Lipscomb, who survives.

In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include five daughters, Gail B. Blackwell of Danville, Va., De'Andra P. Corbett of Burlington, Arbendella Stephens, Chuvola A. Johnson and Hattie M. Jeffries all of Milton; one son, Harvey Lipscomb Jr. of Blanch; three sisters, Amy J. Johnson, Ardelia Mitchell and Katie W. Williams all of Blanch; and one brother, Arthur Lipscomb of Blanch; 18 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hamer Baptist Church by the Rev. Cephus Lea and Elder Edward L. Breedlove. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8 Tuesday night at Fulton Funeral Home, Yanceyville, and other times will be at the residence.

Rosa Troutt

RUFFIN, N.C. - Rosa May Hershman Troutt, 85, 352 Loop Road, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 1996, in Riverside Health Center in Danville, Va.

Born in Mecklenburg County, Va., she was a member of Dan River Primitive Baptist Church. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Dan River Mills.

She is survived by a son, Garvine Troutt of Norfolk, Va.; a brother, James Hershman of Ruffin; and one grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday from Dan River Primitive Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.

Fair Funeral Home of Eden is in charge of arrangements.

Ellis Pruitt

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Ellis Scott Pruitt, 42, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 1996, in his residence, following six months of declining health.

Born Feb. 6, 1954, in Danville, Va., he was a son of James H. and Phyllis Fralin Pruitt, who survive.

He attended public schools in Charlotte and graduated from Wilton, Conn., High School in 1972. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and the International Institute of Interior Design in Washington, D.C.

He was employed as a staff designer by Bloomingdale's in Washington and by Martin Kuckley Inc. in New York. For several years, he owned a firm in Washington, New York, and Los Angeles.

A memorial service will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Wednesday from Matthews United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends after the service at the church.

Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service of Charlotte is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Parsons Sr.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Joseph Samuel Parsons Sr., 70, 2005 Pheobe Drive, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 1996, in Wesley Long Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Virginia, he was of the Baptist faith.

For 41 years, he was married icon to Nettie Linville Parsons, who survives.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Ann Parsons Fields of Greensboro; two sons, Joseph Samuel Parsons Jr. of Greensboro and James Allen Parsons Sr. of Danville, Va.; a sister, Elma P. Walker of Ruffin; two brothers, Richard M. Parsons Jr. of Danville, Va., and Calvin J. Parsons of Greensboro; and eight grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Chapel in Greensboro. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Maggie Adams

PELHAM, N.C. - Maggie Voss Adams, 77, 479 Goodman Road, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 1996, in Triangle Hospice of Hillsborough.

Born Jan. 6, 1919, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of Ison Voss and Leona Stokes.

She was married icon to James M. Adams, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church, where she served on the Usher Board and in Missionary groups.

Survivors include five sons, James M. Adams Jr. of Philadelphia, William C. Adams of Coachville, Pa., Weldon M. Adams and Robert L. Adams, both of Pelham, and John H. Adams of Danville, Va.; a daughter, Maggie L. Sully of Philadelphia; a step-daughter, Linda A. Watkins of Philadelphia; four brothers, McKinney Voss of Pelham, James Voss of Washington D.C., Rufus Voss of Oxon Hill, Md., and Herbert Voss of Landover, Md.; four sisters, Elizabeth Darby of Danville, Va., Blanche DeJarnette of Rockingham County, Va., Barbara Wilson of Hampton, Va., and Mable Abbott of New York City; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Shady Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Haywood Gray. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The body may be viewed until 8 p.m. Thursday at L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence of a son, Robert Adams, 485 Goodman Road, Pelham.

James Lewis Sr.

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - James Leonard Lewis Sr., 76, of 313 West Main St., died Sunday, Nov. 3, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center, Danville, Va.

Born Feb. 10, 1920, in Halifax County, Va., he was a son of Theodore Cleveland Lewis and Elizabeth Collie Lewis.

He was retired from Hanover Mills in Yanceyville.

He was of the Methodist faith.

His wife, Mary Wiles Lewis, died on Dec. 4, 1995.

Survivors include four daughters, Virginia L. Andrews of Carrboro, Frances L. Cooper and Judy L. Smith both of Blanch, and Ruby L. Mumpower of Yanceyville; two sons, James L. Lewis Jr. of Semora and John Lewis of Providence; three sisters, Pattie Phelps of Alton, Va., Lelia Hunt of Clayton, and Ester Chase of Honosassa Springs, Fla.; one brother, Malcolm Lewis of Danville, Va.; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Prospect United Methodist Church by the Rev. Scott Wilkerson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Marley Funeral Home, and other times will be at the residence.

Arch Walker

DURHAM, N.C. - Arch Love Walker, 88, 2226 Ferrell Road, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 1996, in Hillcrest Convalescent Center, following a brief illness.

Born in Person County, he was a son of Walter Wesley Walker and Lula McGhee Walker.

He attended school in Person County, but had been a resident of Durham since 1950. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the City of Durham. He was also a member of Faith Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Maye W. Cheek of Yanceyville and Shirley W. Murray of Harrisburg; two sons, James A. Walker and William Ted Walker, both of Durham; two sisters, Lois Stevens and Jessie Thomas, both of Roxboro; a brother, Rainey Walker of Durham; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

He predeceased by his wife, Lottie Mae Whitt Walker, and a son, Robert W. Walker.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham by the Rev. Keith Menshouse. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Ewen "Sandy" Barnett Jr.

BEECH MOUNTAIN, N.C. - Ewen P. "Sandy" Barnett Jr., 54, 102 Village Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 1996, in his residence.

Born in Roanoke, Va., he was a son of Ewen P. Barnett Sr. and Lois Pruitt Barnett, who survives.

He was married icon to Jonella S. Barnett, who survives.

He was a graduate of Virginia Military Institute and received a law degree from the University of Virginia. He served in the U.S. Army and was employed as a business consultant. He had lived in Beech Mountain for three years.

In addition to his mother of Danville, Va., and his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Jeffrey Bonafede of Corina del Mar, Calif., Christopher Bonafede of London, and Ewen P. Barnett III of Shreveport, La.; and a brother, John Barnett of Danville, Va.

No local services are planned.

Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home of Newland is in charge of arrangements.

Betty Jane Kemp

RUFFIN, N.C. - Miss Betty Jane Kemp, 56, of 711 Schoolfield Road, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 1996, at Stratford Health Care Center in Danville.

A native of Rockingham County, she was retired from Hughes Memorial Home after 25 years of service.

She was a member of the Happy Home Church of Christ.

Survivors include one brother, David Porter Kemp Sr. of Ruffin.

A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Reidsville.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

Charles Phillips Sr.

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - The graveside service for Charles E. Phillips Sr., 58, of 120 Pritchett Drive, will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Phillips Family Cemetery in Providence by the Rev. Robert G. Williams.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 Tuesday night at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times will be at the residence.

He died Saturday, Nov. 9, 1996, at his residence. He had been in declining health since 1989.

Born May 15, 1938, in Princess Anne County, N.C., he was a son of Mamie Bell Phillips Gosney.

On March 29, 1958, he was married icon to Barbara Massie Phillips, who survives.

A former resident of Sutherlin, Va., he moved to Providence 19 years ago.

He retired on disability from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., after 18 years of service.

He was a member of Community Baptist Church in Yanceyville.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Debra Jean Phillips and Robin Phillips Whaley, both of Providence; two sons, Charles Edward Phillips Jr. and Rodney Keith Phillips, both of Providence; four sisters, Barbara Ann Hicks, Alice Fay Willis and Merry Mack Willis, all of Reidsville, and Joy Lucille Perry of Yanceyville; two brothers, James Douglas Gosney and Josh Daniel Gosney, both of Orlando, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

The family will be at the residence.
