Jimmy McDowell
MILTON, N.C. - The funeral for James Wayne "Jimmy" McDowell Sr., 52, of 4000 Mountain Hill Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel by the Rev. Daryl Joyce. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.
He died Dec. 6, 1996, in Duke Medical Center. He was in the hospital for one day and had been in declining health for one year.
Born Dec. 23, 1943, in Danville, he was a son of James Vaden McDowell and Ada Elizabeth Martin McDowell Bledsoe.
He had lived all of his life in Caswell County, where he was a graduate of Bartlett Yancey High School. McDowell had worked for the former Wilson Meat Packing Co. for several years. Then, he owned the Kings Highway Steakhouse in Eden and the Seafood Place. He was owner and operator of Danville Produce Co.
On May 20, 1966, McDowell married
Shirley Ann Dowdy McDowell.
He was a member of The Tabernacle.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, James W. "Jamie" McDowell Jr. of Ringgold, and Jeff E. McDowell of Danville; one daughter, Sherry McDowell of the residence; four brothers, Gary David McDowell of Milton, Curtis O. McDowell of Spartanburg, S.C., Marvin McDowell of Ringgold, Va., and Randolph Gibson of Danville, Va.; three sisters, Elizabeth McDowell Mills and Doris McDowell Smith, both of Danville, and Virginia McDowell French of Eden; and one grandchild.
He was predeceased by his parents and one brother, Grady Gibson.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover chapel and other times at the residence.
Hilda French
EDEN, N.C. - The funeral for Hilda Rae Denny French, 49, 171 Westerly Park Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel in Reidsville. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
She died Monday, Sept. 30, 1996, in North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.
Born in Rockingham County, she was employed by TriCity Ford and Empire Rentals. She was also of the Baptist faith.
She was married
to Elmer Wayne French, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Denise French Pruitt of Eden; two sons, Mark Wayne French and Bryant Wayne French, both of Eden; two brothers, Herman Carter Denny of Rural Hall and Herbert Lee Denny of Ruffin; one grandchild; and three step-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Noah Stump
EDEN, N.C. - Noah Nelson Stump, 88, of 1116 Front St., died Sunday, Sept. 29, 1996, in Moses Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.
He was born in Floyd, Va., and lived with his great-nephew and guardians, Ben and Glenda Lipford Jr.
He formerly lived with Willie and Claudine Mills, who predeceased him.
Survivors include one sister, Sarah Denny of Eden.
The graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday in Dan View Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Fair Funeral Home, Eden, and other times will be at the residence.
Margie Goins
PELHAM, N.C. - A graveside service for Margie Parker Goins, 59, 207 Samantha Lane, will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Sylvia Burchett.
She died Sunday, Sept. 29, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 11, 1936, in Danville, Va., she was a daughter of Vantella Giles Parker. Her stepfather was Irvin Parker.
She was married
to Tommy W. Goins, who survives.
She spent most of her life in Danville, Va. Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a nurse's aid by Willow Haven Nursing Home in Greensboro. She was also of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son; four step-children; a sister, Betty Callahan of Danville, Va.; a brother, Charles Gurley of Durham; four step-grandchildren; and 19 step-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Willie Pierce
PELHAM, N.C. - Willie Calvin Pierce, 74, Route 1, Box 367, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 1996, in Lasalle Haven Rest Home in Durham, following five years of declining health.
Born Feb. 26, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Nathaniel Wooding Pierce and Ida Motley Pierce.
He was married
to Bobbie Lee Tuck Pierce, who died Sept. 2, 1993.
He was employed by Dan River Inc. for about 40 years. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. He was also of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara F. Cook of Yanceyville and Juanita Gobble of Abingdon, Va.; two sons, Larry Pierce and Ronnie Pierce, both of the residence; three sisters, Edna Mason of Danville, Va., Margaret Pence of Landover Hills, Md., and Betty Sue Clay of Nathalie, Va.; two brothers, Winford "Dick" Pierce of Long Island, Va., and Leon Pierce of Gretna, Va.; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Jimmy Reaves. Military rites will be performed by American Legion Post No. 325.
The family will receive friends at the residence of a daughter, Barbara F. Cook, 467 Bill Turner Road, Yanceyville.

Sarah Scales
PELHAM, N.C. - Sarah Hatchett Simpson Scales, 218 Mineral Springs Road, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born April 8, 1922, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of George Henry Hatchett and Rebecca Graves Hatchett.
She was predeceased by her husband,Galloway Scales.
She was a member of Red Hill Baptist Church, where she served in the choir and the Missionary Circle. She was also a homemaker.
Survivors include three sons, George Henry Simpson and John West Simpson, both of Pelham, and Theotis Wilson Simpson of Reidsville; four daughters, Sharon S. Graves and Debra Simpson, both of Pelham, and Alice Payne and Ella Mullins, both of Manahattan, N.Y.; one brother, Robert Lewis of McLeansville; two step-daughters, Carolyn Cumming and Mary Wimple, both of Reidsville; two sisters, Rebecca Murphy of Pelham and Georgianna McCain of Brown Summit; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Red Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Gregory Hopkins. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body may be viewed 2-8 p.m. today at Fulton Funeral Home in Yanceyville. The family will receive friends at the residence.
Willie Pierce
PELHAM, N.C. - A graveside service for Willie Calvin Pierce, 74, Route 1, Box 367, will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Jimmy Reaves. Military rites will be performed by American Legion Post No. 325.

Dorothy Newby
PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Dorothy Clapp Newby, 73, 321 Pinewood Road, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 1996, in her residence.
Born Jan. 4, 1913, in Saltville, Va., she was a daughter of Emory C. Clapp and Sarah Ellen Rush Clapp.
She was married
to Robert Clarence Newby, who predeceased her.
She enjoyed gardening, canning and quilting.
Survivors include a daughter, Ann Sprinkel of Glen Burnie, Md.; a son, Clarence Newby of Richmond, Va.; a sister, Evelyn Rush of Ocala, Fla; a brother, Billy Clapp of Norfolk, Va.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Ronald Newby.
A memorial service will be conducted at a later date. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Blanche Clingman
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Mrs. Blanche Elizabeth Owen Clingman, 81, of 407 Bob White Court, died Friday, Oct. 4, 1996, at the Triad United Methodist Home.
Born Jan. 17, 1915, in Danville, Va., she was a daughter of Colonel Jasper and Ruby Groves Owen.
She lived her early years in Semora.
She was employed as a legal secretary and secretary to the administrative area of the U.S. Army Flying Safety and Training Group located in the Nissen Building during World War II.
She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church where she belonged to the Women's Auxiliary and the Circle of the Church.
She was married
to Joel P. Clingman.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Joe P. "Pat" Clingman Jr. of Butner, and two sisters, Miss Nan Owen of Semora and Mrs. Dorothy Willis of Estelle.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Centenary United Methodist Church by Dr. George P. Robinson and the Bishop Ernest Fitzgerald. Burial will be in Forsyth Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 3-5 p.m. today at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel.
Millie Hamlett
MILTON, N.C. - Millie Ann Hamlett, 57, of 68 Chambers Road, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 1996, at her residence.
Born Dec. 12, 1938, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of David Lee and Mary Ella Lee.
She was a member of the Church of Christ in Danville, Va.
She was married
to Pulliam Hamlett.
In addition to her husband of the residence and her mother of Arlington, Va., survivors include four daughters, Debbie Moore of Blanch, Tondea Royster and Denise Hamlett, both of the residence, and Daphne Yellock of Mebane; two sons, Michael Royster of Savannah, Ga., and Tony Royster of the residence; nine sisters, Helen Thomas, Angela Cunningham and Sharon Lea Chopra, all of Baltimore, Priscilla Thompson of Washington, D.C., Rosetta Watkins of Landover, Md., Fannie Jeffries of Milton, Maria Jeffries and Esther Thomas, both of Blanch, and Diane Kirby of Danville; six brothers, John W. Lee and Monroe Lee, both of Maryland, Robert Lee of Milton, Paul Lee, Tommy Lee and Kevin Lee, all of Danville; and 10 grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Macedonia AME Church in Milton by Brother George Guinn. Burial will be in the Floral Hills Memory Gardens on U.S. 58-E.
The family will receive friends from noon to 8 p.m. today at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel in Milton, and other times the family will be at the residence.
Pat Powell
BLANCH, N.C. - Pat Powell, 96, of 3655 Blanch Road, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 1996, at Danville Regional Medical Center, where he had been admitted Friday. He had been a resident of Roman Eagle Memorial Home for five months before entering to the hospital.
Born Aug. 17, 1900, in Caswell County, he was the son of Joshua Allen Powell and Rebecca Virginia Brandon Powell.
He spent his entire life in the Blanch community where he was a retired farmer.
He married
the former Myrtle Cornelia Butts. She died Nov. 1, 1961.
He was a member of Blanch Baptist Church where he served as a trustee, deacon and on the cemetery and grounds committee for a number of years.
Survivors include one daughter, Virginia M. Powell of the residence; one son, James H. Powell of Blanch; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. George Rumney and John Bradsher. Interment will be in Blanch Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-8:30 p.m. today, and, at other times at the residence.
