Berkley Harris

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - A graveside service for Berkley Willard Harris, 79, 836 Walters Mill Road, will be conducted 11 a.m. today from Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Lawrence Morris.
He died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 1996, in the Brian Center of Yanceyville, following two years of declining health.
Born Sept. 17, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of William Irvin Harris Sr. and Nora Adkins Harris.
He was married icon to Frances Walker Harris, who survives.
He had lived in the Providence community of Caswell County since 1964. Prior to his retirement at age 62, he was employed by Tudor Ice Company as a truck driver for 35 years.
He was a member of Gatewood Baptist Church. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Ruth Harris Hankins of Chatham, Va.; a son, William B. Harris of Providence; two sisters, Fannie Withers and Mary Dodson, both of Danville, Va.; a brother, Irvin Harris of Providence; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his son, 879 Walters Mill Road.
Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Betty Chandler

MILTON, N.C. - Betty Wann Chandler, 62, 118 Old Montgomery Road, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born in Danville, Va., she was a daughter of David T. and Martha Beheler Wann.
She was married icon to John Ashley Chandler, who died Aug. 8, 1987.
Educated in Danville City schools, she was a secretary for Danville Regional Medical Center until her retirement. She was also a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia Chandler Smith of Milton and Beth Chandler Powell of Danville, Va.; two sons, Richard Ashley Chandler of Brosville, Va., and Gary Wendell Chandler of Rocky Mount; five sisters, Diane Jones, Florence Hackler, Sharon Lipford, and Jean Stamper, all of Danville, and Patsy Hinson of Siler City; three brothers, Hershel Wann of Danville, Cline Wann of Siler City and David Wann of Orlando, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday from Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. David Williams. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Hooper Funeral Home in Yanceyville, and other times at the residence.

Robert "Robbie" Cayton Jr.

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Robert "Robbie" Earl Cayton Jr., 18, 4831 Foster Road, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 1996, in UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Born in Danville, he was a son of Robert Cayton Sr. and Joyce Massey Cayton Strader, who survive.
He graduated from Bartlett Yancey High School and was employed by Food Lion in Yanceyville. He attended Community Baptist Church and was a member of Bartlett Yancey ROTC.
In addition to his parents, survivors include his step-father, Elvis Strader Sr. of the residence; two step-brothers, Elvis Strader Jr. and Bobby James Strader, both of the residence; one step-sister, Cristina Marie Strader of Richmond; his paternal grandparents, Douglas and Mary Cayton of Reidsville; his maternal grandmother, Barbara Vivian Massey of Danville, Va.; and his great-grandmother, Nellie Lucas of Danville, Va.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Community Baptist Church by the Rev. Mark Smith. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Hooper Funeral Home in Yanceyville, and other times at the residence.

Betty Chandler

MILTON, N.C. - A graveside service for Betty Wann "Boots" Chandler, 62, 200 Old Montgomery Road, will be conducted 11 a.m. today from Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. David Williams.
She died Thursday, Aug. 22, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born in Danville, Va., she was a daughter of David T. and Martha Beheler Wann.
She was married icon to John Ashley Chandler, who died Aug. 16, 1987.
Educated in the Danville City schools, she was a secretary for Danville Regional Medical Center until her retirement. She was also a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia Chandler Smith of Milton and Beth Chandler Powell of Danville, Va.; two sons, Richard Ashley Chandler of Brosville, Va., and Gary Wendell Chandler of Rocky Mount; five sisters, Diane Jones, Florence Hackler, Sharon Lipford, and Jean Stamper, all of Danville, and Patsy Hinson of Siler City; three brothers, Hershel Wann of Danville, Cline Wann of Siler City and David Wann of Orlando, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

Woodrow Gilliam

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - James Woodrow Gilliam, 80, 582 Walters Mill Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 1996, in his residence, following three years of declining health.
Born May 7, 1916, in Alamance County, he was a son of Rudy Lee Gillam Sr. and Lucy Mae Fitch Gilliam.
On Dec. 23, 1937, he was married icon to Una Garrison Gilliam, who survives.
He was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church, where he was a member-at-large of the Administrative Board.
He spent most of his life in the Gatewood community of Caswell County. He retired in 1981 as vice president of Virginia Tobacco Co. after 39 years of service.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four sons, Donald Woodrow Gilliam of Uniontown, Ohio, James Ronald Gilliam of Providence, and Larry Wayne Gilliam and Neal Glenn Gilliam, both of Danville, Va.; three brothers, Wallace Gilliam, R.L. Gilliam Jr. and Eldridge Gilliam, all of Burlington; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Shady Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Rufus Butner. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel, and other times at the residence.

Clifton Hamlett

MILTON, N.C. - Clifton C. Hamlett, 70, 2943 Yarbrough Mill Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 1996, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born July 9, 1926, in Caswell County, he was a son of Charlie Hamlett and Neely Hutcherson Hamlett.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Sears, Roebuck and Co. for 30 years. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Janie Oldham of Thomasville, Ga.; three sons, Arnold Hamlett, Richard Hamlett and Larry Gene Hamlet, all of Milton; two sisters, Bertha Henshaw and Dora Durham, both of Randleman; a brother, Clitus Hamlett of Randleman; and nine grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ruby Case Hamlett; and by a daughter, Mary Jane Hamlett.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. David Williams. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Marley Funeral Home in Yanceyville, and other times at the residence of a son, Larry Gene Hamlett, 62 North, Milton.

George Terrell Sr.

ELON COLLEGE, N.C. - George William Terrell Sr., 79, 694 Stadler Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 1996, in Alamance Regional Medical Center, following 21/2 years of declining health.
Born in Caswell County, he was a son of Henry Edward Terrell and Lucy Simmons Terrell.
He was married icon to Louise Pyrant Terrell, who survives.
He was a retired farmer and a member of Concord United Church of Christ in Caswell County.
He was also a charter member of Southern Caswell Ruritan Club. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, where he received the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with the Bronze Service Star; American Theater Service Medal; American Defense Service Medal; Good Conduct Medal; and World War II Victory Medal.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, G.W. Terrell Jr. and Baron L. Terrell, both of Elon College; two brothers, H. Preston Terrell of Gibsonville and Ben Terrell of Burlington; and seven sisters, Selma Simpson, Erma Swift, and Pearl Tate, all of Elon College, Lillie Walker, Mary Menefee, and Virginia Terry, all of Burlington, and Leona Chandler of Yanceyville.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday from Concord United Church of Christ by the Rev. Floyd Hinshaw and Dr. Millard Stevens. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington, and other times at the residence.

Joseph "Billy" Chandler

SEMORA, N.C. - Joseph William "Billy" Chandler, 75, of 15879 Highway 119 North, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 1996, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Sept. 24, 1920, in Caswell County, he was a son of Claude G. Chandler and Freda Pointer Chandler.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a member and an elder at Red House Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mabel Yeatts Chandler of Semora; one son, Mike Chandler of Clarksville, Va.; one daughter, Rebecca Jo Chandler Hatchett of Semora; one brother, Fred Chandler of Roxboro; three sisters, Jean C. Styron of Raleigh; and Josephine C. Newell and Frances C. Tripp both of Roxboro; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Nellie Brooks Chandler.
The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. today at Red House Prebyterian Church by the Rev. Adolph Otersen and the Rev. Joe Grubbs. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Brooks Funeral Home, South Boston, is in charge of arrangements.

Rosa Hodges

PELHAM, N.C. - Rosa W. Hodges, 77, of 1068 Jones Road, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 1996, at the home of her son, Wayne Hodges, 1429 Park Springs Road, Providence.
Born May 20, 1919, in Person County, she was the daughter of Will Walker and Mary Nunn Walker.
She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, and was retired from Royal Textile Mills after 35 years of service.
Survivors include one daughter, Rosemary H. O'Quinn of Elgin, S.C.; two sons, Wayne E. Hodges of Providence and Ronnie E. Hodges of Ruffin; two sisters, Edna W. Davis of Roxboro; Alliene Keck of Pittsboro; two brothers, Jimmy Walker of Hurdle Mills and John Walker of Roxboro; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Rex Brooks. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Barker Funeral Home, and other times will be at her son Wayne Hodges' residence, 1429 Park Springs Road.

Melvina Stokes

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Melvina Stokes, of Yanceyville, formerly of 722 Goose Pond Road, Ruffin, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 1996, in Brian Center Nursing Home.
Born March 25, 1916, she was a daughter of David Lawson and Bertha Johnson Stokes.
She was a native of Rockingham County, and was a member of Mt. Herman Baptist Church in Ruffin, where she was in the Missionary's Circle and the Friendli-ettes.
She was a retired employee of the board of education in Detroit, Mich.
Survivors include one sister, Juanita S. Fulton of Yanceyville; and one brother, Cecil Stokes of Baltimore, Md.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Herman Baptist Church by the Rev. John Doe. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The viewing will be held 2-8 p.m. Monday at Fulton Funeral Home, Yanceyville. The family will be at the funeral home from 7-8 p.m. Monday, and other times will be at the home of her sister, Juanita S. Fulton, 73 East Main St., Yanceyville.
