James Hershman
EDEN, N.C. - James H. Hershman, 83, of Mayfield, N.C., died Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997 at Morehead Memorial Hospital.
Born in Chase City, Va., he was a member of Dan River Primitive Baptist Church.
He worked 36 years for Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company.
He was married
to Asyline Davis Hershman, who predeceased him.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James H. Hershman Jr. and Debbie Maness Hershman of Leesburg, Va.; two granddaughters, Jessica and Emily Hershman of Leesburg; a sister-in-law, Hazel Turlington of Newport News, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted Wednesday at Dan River Primitive Baptist Church with interment following in the church cemetery.
Charles Dallas
PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Charles Eldon Dallas, 54, 1603 Seamster Road, died Monday, Dec. 15, 1997, at his residence.
Born Dec. 26, 1942, in Danville, Va., he was a son of Raleigh Eldon Dallas and Loretta Cash Dallas, who survives.
He was married
to Susan Nye Dallas, who survives.
He was captain of Danville Fire Department, having retired after 30 years of service due to illness.
He was a graduate of Spring Garden High School.
He was a member of Sons of the American Legion Post 325, Glen Oak Golf Club and Danville Professional Firefighters Association.
In addition to his wife of the residence and mother of Danville, survivors include a son, Charles E. Dallas Jr. of Phoenix; a daughter, Sherri Dallas of Centreville, Va.; two stepsons, Wade Collins and Greg Collins, both of Danville; a sister, Linda Hudson of Danville; and a brother, James Dallas of Spring Garden, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Townes Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Daryl Joyce. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery.
The family will receive friends after the funeral service on Wednesday at the residence.
Marian Holliness
MILTON, N.C. - Marian F. Holliness, 52, of Highway 62 North, has died.
Born Dec. 7, 1945, she was the daughter of Willie Faulkner and Ora Mae Faulkner, who survives.
She was married
to Franklin Holliness, who survives.
She received her education in the public schools of Caswell County. She attended Virginia Union University in Richmond, Va. She received a certificate in surgical technology from Danville Regional Medical Center.
In 1992, she graduated as a licensed nurse. For 28 years, she was employed by Danville Regional Medical Center.
She was a member of River Zion Baptist Church in Blanch. She served as a musician for many area churches and groups.
In addition to her husband and mother of Milton, survivors include two daughters, Davine White and T'sharner Holliness, both of the residence; a brother, Frank Faulkner of Asheboro; two stepdaughters; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at River Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Tyrone Thornton. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Viewing for family and friends will be from 12-8 p.m. today at Plenty Funeral Home.
The family is at the residence of her mother, Ora Mae Faulkner, 9259 Hwy 62 North, Milton.
Billy Edwards
GRIMESLAND, N.C. - Billy Edwards, 57, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997, at the VA Hospital in Durham.
A native of Johnston County, he lived in Craven County for many years and moved to Pitt County in 1989. He served in the U.S. Air Force with the 464th Troop Carrier Wing of Pope Air Force Base. He was employed with a gas company in New Bern for several years.
He was married
to Hazel Tyson Edwards.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Cathy Jarman of Danville, Va.; three sons, Jimmy Edwards of Anderson, Ind., Jerry Keith Edwards of Grimesland and John C. Edwards of Danville; a stepdaughter, Regina Horton of Merom, Ind.; a stepson, Wes Boyd, of Goldsboro; two sisters, Rachel E. Burroughs of New Bern and Ruby Neal of St. Augustine, Fla.; five brothers, Ray Edwards of Washington, and James William Edwards, Bobby Edwards, Glenn Edwards and Douglas Edwards, all of New Bern; 10 grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Pinewood Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
John Reynolds
KINSTON, N.C. - John Blair Reynolds, 71, 2647 St. John Circle, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
Formerly of Danville, Va., he was the son of John Thomas Reynolds and Dora Cardwell Reynolds.
He was a retired customer service representative with Piedmont Airlines. He was a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Chruch in Danville.
He was also a member of the Antique Automobile Club of America, the Corvair Society of America, and the World Airline Historical Society.
He was married
to Barbara Jackson Reynolds.
In addition to hsi wife, of the residence, he is survived by his closest first cousins, Robert P. Blair Jr. and Francis Hardy Davis, both of Danville.
Funeral services will be condcuted 3 p.m. Tuesday at Pinelawn Memorial Park chapel in Kinston.
Garner Funeral Home, Kinston, is in charge of arrangements.
Louise Smith
EDEN, N.C. - Louise Dula Smith, 88, of Willow Oaks Farm, died Monday, Dec. 22, 1997, at Morehead Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26, 1997, at First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at Dan View Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately prior to the service at 12:45 p.m. in the Whitley Room of the Church.
Louise Dula Smith was born in Wilkesboro, N.C., on April 27, 1909. She was the daughter of the late Louise Brown Dula and Ethel Lenoir Dula.
She was a graduate of East Carolina Teachers College in Greenville, and taught the first grade in Draper graded schools for three years.
On June 29, 1932, she was married
to Richard Ivy Smith Jr., of Willow Oaks Farm. They were married
for 65 years.
Their children are Bob and Marjorie Starling of Atlanta, Robert and Jennifer Smith of Eden and Richard Ivy Smith III of Eden. There are four grandchildren, Samantha and Annie Smith of Eden, Lisa Starling Duffley of Dayton, Ohio, and Mary Starling Wagner of Park City, Utah. There are also six great-grandchildren.
She was active in the church and community including charter member of First Presbyterian Church of Eden, Honorary Life Member of Women of the Church, Junior Service League, Draper Women's Club, Leaksville History Club, Rockingham County Historical Society, Eden Presbyterian Society, Daughters of American Revolution and the Border Book Club.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to First Presbyterian Church, 432 Bridge St., Eden, N.C. 27288.
Fair Funeral Home in Eden is in charge of arrangements.
Edna Slade
RUFFIN, N.C. - Edna M. Slade, 1464 Big Oaks Farm Road, died Monday morning, Dec. 22, 1997, at Annie Penn Hospital.
A native and life-long resident of Caswell County, she was a retired employee of Burlington Industries.
She was a member of Red Hill Baptist Church and a former member of the usher board.
Survivors include her mother, Willie Edna Slade of the residence; four daughters, Mary Dixon and Sarah B. Slade, both of the residence, and Shelia Ferrell of Danville, Va., and Gwendolyn Gwynn of Caswell County; five sisters, Yvonne Slade of Capital Heights, Md., and Eva Mae King of Washington, D.C., and Kate Harris Stalling of Virginia Beach, Va., and Mary Ruth Kirby and Bertha Glass, both of Danville; eight brothers, Sam King of Ruffin, Jessie Lloyd King and Clyde Rodgers King, both of Temple Hill, Md., and Tim David King of Greensboro, and Joseph Lee King, Troy Daniel King, Percy King and Barry King, all of Danville; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Red Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Gregory Hopkins. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at the residence.

Geraldine Bailey
EDEN, N.C. - Geraldine Doolittle Bailey, 86, of 429 S. Fieldcrest Road, died Friday, Dec. 26, 1997, at N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.
A native of Danville, Va., she was a daughter of George W. Doolittle and Sarah Speaks Doolittle.
She lived in the Rockingham County, N.C., area most of her life.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of True Gospel Baptist Church.
She was predeceased by two sons, Robert Bailey Jr. and Wayne Bailey. She was also predeceased by her husband, Robert Bailey Sr.
Survivors include three sons, Carlton R. Bailey of Pelham, N.C., Thomas L. Bailey of Reidsville, N.C. and Fred N. Bailey of Eden, N.C.; four daughters, Ruby B. Barber of Providence, N.C., Mildred "Millie" B. Moorefield of Ringgold, Va., Patricia B. White of Covington, Va. and Joyce "Gaynell" B. Corum of Eden; 23 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Citty Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Reidlawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. At other times, the family will receive friends at 429 S. Fieldcrest Road, Eden.
Louise Pryor
RUFFIN, N.C. - Louise "Ese" Johnson Pryor, 81, of 2170 Mayfield Road, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997, at Morehead Nursing Center.
She was a native of Rockingham County, N.C. She was retired from Dan River Inc.
She was a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Pryor Alderson of Eden, N.C. and Carolyn Pryor Ramsey of Stoneville, N.C.; one brother, Bobby Johnson of Eden; three grandchildren, Keith French, Virginia Ramsey Woodall and Eldon Ramsey; and three great-grandchildren, Tiffany Woodall, Matthew French and Hunter Ramsey.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Dan River Primitive Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Wilkerson Funeral Home. At other times, the family will receive friends at the home of Keith French, 1302 Crutchfield Road.
