Vernie Burton
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Vernie Hazel Willis Burton, 89, of 1654 Carrie Rest Home, Allison Road, Pelham, died Friday, Oct. 17, 1997.
Born Jan. 26, 1908, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of Robert and Eliza Willis.
She was a homemaker and a member of Graves Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Earl H. Burton of Philadelphia; a sister, Allie Mae Tate of Yanceyville; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from Graves Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Kenneth Walker. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. tonight at Fulton Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her daughter-in-law, 672 Gun-Poole Road, Mebane.
Winifred Henry
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Winifred Graves Henry, 8-E Old Farm Apartments, died Monday, Oct. 20, 1997, at her residence.
Born March 21, 1918, in Caswell County, she a daughter of Oscar and Mallie Graves.
She was married
to Gerald Henry, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Graves Chapel Baptist Church.
She was a former employee of Metropoliton Insurance Company as a claims handler.
Survivors include two sisters, Mary G. Davis of Yanceyville and Barbara G. Mills of Reidsville.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at Graves Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Kenneth Walker. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body may be viewed from 2 to 8 tonight at Fulton Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
John Price Jr.
MILTON, N.C. - John Price Jr., 52, 168 East St., died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center in Danville, Va., after a lengthy illness.
A native of Caswell County, he was a son of John Price Sr. and Kate Stewart Price, who survives.
He was married
to Glady Slade Price. He was later married
to Judy Jackson Price.
He received his education in the public schools of Caswell County.
He was a member of Macedonia A.M.E. Church in Milton.
In addition to his wife of the residence and his mother of Milton, survivors include three daughters, Linda Jeffries of Reidsville, Debra Kirby of Danville, Va., and Denise Wilson of Milton; a sister, Mary Miller of Pottstown, Pa.; two brothers, Lee Price of Pottstown, Pa., and James Price of Milton; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Macedonia A.M.E. Church by the Rev. Clyde Long. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Viewing for family and friends will be 12-8 tonight at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel, Semora.
The family will be at the residence.
Janie Strader
RUFFIN, N.C. - Janie Page Strader, 85, 628 Guerrant Springs Road, died Tuesday morning, Oct. 21, 1997, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.
A native of Rockingham County, she was retired from American Tobacco Co.
She was a member of Happy Home United Church of Christ, and was also a member of Oregon Hill Senior Citizens.
Survivors include two sons, Nathan Strader and Thomas Strader, both of Ruffin; two sisters, Lettie Ellington and Sally Ann Mills, both of Ruffin; three brothers, William Page, Robert Page and Edward Page, all of Ruffin; two grandchildren and four step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Happy Home United Church of Christ. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Wilkerson Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Sadie Morrow
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Sadie Graves Morrow, 2617 W. Ingersoll St., Philadelphia, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997, at Fitzgerald-Mercy Hospital in Philadelphia.
Born Sept. 12, 1922, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Jessie Graves and Maggie Graves.
She was married
to William Thomas Morrow, who predeceased her.
She was a retired nurse.
Survivors include a daughter, Theresa Wilson of Philadelphia; a half brother, George Graves of Reidsville; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday at Fulton Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Veteran Cemetery in Danville, Va.
The body may be viewed from 4 to 8 tonight at Fulton Funeral Home.
Leatha Belle Edwards
LEXINGTON, N.C. - Leatha Belle Stewart Edwards, 88, formerly of Swing Dairy Road, died Thursday, Oct. 23, in Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury after a decline in health of 10 days.
Born Nov. 9, 1908, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Joseph Stewart and Susie Gilley Stewart.
She was a member of North Lexington Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
She was married
to Brooks Edwards, who died in 1986.
She is survived by a daughter, Nettie Edwards Foard Shaw of Lexington; one granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Jesse Stewart; a sister, Bessie Scearce; and a grandson, Sawney Foard.
A funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Davidson Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. Robert Floyd. Burial will follow in Lexington City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Davidson Funeral Home, and other times at the home of the daughter, Nettie Edwards Foard Shaw, 204 Raeford Ave.
William King
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - William Dewey King, 58, of 436 E. Sprague St., died at his home after an extended illness.
Born. Jan. 24, 1939, in Lynchburg, Va., he was a son of Dorothy Vassar King and Samuel Dewey King.
He was educated at Randolph-Macon College, the University of Virginia, Yale University, Northwestern University and the University of California at Berkley.
He taught at E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg and then moved to Central Virgina Community College as head of freshman English. In 1971, he joined the faculty at the North Carolina School of the Arts, teaching literature and filmmaking. He later taught English at High Point University. In 1996, he retired to Long Beach, N.C.
In addition to his mother of Lynchburg, survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, Betty King and Henry Chambers of Danville, Va.; two nieces, Susan Oakes and Judy Purgason, both of Danville; and two nephews, David Chambers and Butch Chambers, both of Danville.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Diuguid's Chapel on Rivermont Drive in Lynchburg, Va. Interment will be at Kedron Cemetery in Gladys, Va.
Lindsay Wagstaff
ROXBORO, N.C. - Lindsay Thompson Wagstaff, 74, of 5465 Semora Road, died Friday, Oct. 24, 1997, at Person County Memorial Hospital.
Born April 27, 1923, in Person County, he was the son of Kenneth Clyde Wagstaff and Bettie Lou Hester Wagstaff.
He was a farmer and owned and operated the Farmers Tobacco Warehouse. As president of the North Carolina Cattleman's Association in 1974, he stressed the expansion of the Cattle Industry in North Carolina. He served on the board of the North Carolina Cattleman's Foundation and North Carolina Angus Association.
He was a member of Concord United Methodist Church where he served on the board of trustees and other church offices.
He was a trustee for more than 30 years of Person County Memorial Hospital, instrumental in its expansion and modernization. He also served on various school boards and was awarded the Exchange Club's Golden Deeds Award for his many contributions to the Person County community.
A funeral will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Monday at Concord United Methodist Church by the Rev. Andrea R. Woodhouse, the Rev. Thomas G. Holtsclaw and the Rev. Bill Carden. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be at the residence.

Hazel Hamlett
BURLINGTON, N.C. - Hazel Hundley Hamlett, 73, of 4256 Highway 62 South, died Sunday morning, Oct. 26, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
Born in Rockingham County, she was a daughter of Raymond Calup Hundley and Cora Alice Martin Hundley.
She was married
to Garnett Lee Hamlett, who predeceased her.
She was a retired hospice nursing aide, but still served as a hospice volunteer. She also volunteered at the Mt. Zion Thrift Store.
She was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ellen Mays of Burlington and Claudia "Penny" Holderfield of Alamance; two sons, Raymond Hamlett of Ossipee and Walter Hamlett of Alamance; a step daughter, Angie Hamlett of Graham; two sisters, Estelle Hamlett of Danville, Va. and Yvonne Davis of Graham; two brothers, Grady Hundley of Graham and Wayne Hundley of Burlington; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by two sons, Wesley Hamlett and Roger Hamlett; a brother, William Hundley; and a sister, Hester Black.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fellowship Baptist Church by the Rev. Ken Simpson. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at the McClure Funeral Home in Graham and at other times at the residence.
