Thomas Whitley
MORVEN, N.C. - Thomas Harrison Whitley Sr., 87, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997, at Carolinas Medical Center.
He was married
to Robbie Lowry Whitley, who survives.
He was a retired superintendent of the Caswell County School System.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Thomas H. Whitley Jr. of Danville, Va., and Robert R. "Bob" Whitley of Reidsville; two brothers, John C. Whitley and Bill Whitley, both of Eden; and seven grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in Morven Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence, 409 Martin St.
Leavitt Funeral Home of Wadesboro is in charge of arrangements.
Virginia Jones
HIGH POINT, N.C. - Mrs. Virginia Emory Faw Jones, 62, 1179 Wallburg-High Point Road, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997, at High Point Regional Hospital.
A Memorial Mass for the dead will be recited during Sunday Mass at the Church of the First Born in Oak Ridge on Sunday, Nov. 2.
She was a native of Kinston, and was a retired homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Hoyle W. Jones of the home; two sons, James Emory Faw of Elizabeth City and Jonathan Faw of West Jefferson; two daughters, Jennifer Smith of Greensboro and Jackie Faw of Milton; and five grandchildren.

Virgie Wood
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Virgie Carroll Wood, 81, 2941 U.S. Highway 158 West, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 1997, at the Brian Center of Yanceyville. She had been in declining health for several months.
A native of Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Reuben H. Carroll and Martha Ann Patterson Carroll.
She was married
to Jessie Wilson Wood, who died May 30, 1996.
She attended Caswell County Schools, and was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church.
She was also a member of Prospect United Methodist Women and a former president of Prospect-Yanceyville Home Demonstration Club.
For 46 years, she was the pianist/organist for her church. She also was a Sunday school teacher and taught piano for a number of years.
Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Barker of Milton; two sons, Wayne Wood of Providence and Michael Wood of Yanceyville; three sisters, Omie Poteat and Bernice Goodson, both of Danville, Va., and Minnie Powell of Providence; two brothers, Edgar Carroll Sr. of Yanceyville and Mac Carroll of Providence; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by four sisters, Theo C. Lovell, Nettie C. Poteat, Bertha C. Travis and Luetta C. Aldridge; and three brothers, Swanson Carroll, Raymond Carroll and William H. Carroll Sr.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday at Prospect United Methodist Church by the Rev. Scott Wilkinson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Hooper Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Eugene Carroll Jr.
PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Eugene Edgar Carroll Jr., 68, 274 Carroll Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 1997, at Duke University Medical Center. He had been in declining health for several months.
Born in Danville, Va., he was the son of Eugene Edgar Carroll Sr. and Annie Lee Wood Carroll.
He was married
to Mary Ruth Gilbert Carroll, who survives.
He attended Caswell County Schools and graduated from North Carolina State University.
Mr. Carroll attended Purley United Methodist Church.
He retired from N.C. Department of Agriculture, where he served in market development and as coordinator of county agricultural fairs.
He was also a member of the board of directors of the Carolinas Chapter of The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
He served in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by two sons, Eugene Edgar Carroll III of Greensboro and James Gilbert Carroll of Archdale; his father, Eugene Edgar Carroll Sr. of Yanceyville; one brother, Sidney Irvin Carroll of Providence; and three grandchildren, Nathan Andrew Carroll, Meredith Layne Carroll and Clay Dalton Carroll.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Hooper Funeral Home Chapel, Yanceyville, by Dr. Floyd Morrow and the Rev. Ken Clark. Burial will be in Providence Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends and relatives 6-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Bennie Dodd
RALEIGH, N.C. - Bennie Oswald Dodd, 82, 7229 Gumwood Lane, formerly of Dry Fork, died Friday, Oct. 31, 1997, at Raleigh Community Hospital.
He was married
to Marjorie Doyle Dodd, who survives.
He was the owner and operator of Dodd Key and Lock Co.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two stepsons, Harry T. Newman and Sidney O. Newman of Herndon, Va.; a stepdaughter, Marjorie N. Otstot of Raleigh; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at the Dodd Family Cemetery on Mt. Cross Road in the Vance community by Elder Julian Williams. Masonic Rites will be performed by the Morotock Lodge No. 210 A.F. and A.M.

Bedford Pulliam
MILTON, N.C. - Bedford William Pulliam, 77, 56 Fairview Road, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 1997, at his residence.
Born April 3, 1920, in Longhurst, Person County, he was a son of John William Pulliam and Jessie Gravitte Pulliam.
He was married
to Mary Jeffress Pulliam, who survives.
For 52 years, he was the owner and operator of Milton Tire Service.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of Milton United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife of Milton, survivors include a daughter, Patsy Yarbrough of Milton; two brothers, David Pulliam of Timberlake and Maynard Pulliam of Roxboro; a sister, Stacey Wilson of Roxboro; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Cedar Cemetery in Milton by the Rev. Frank Garton.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, Patsy Yarbrough.

Sarah Ward
PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Sarah Evans Ward, 89, 3266 Shady Grove Road, died Friday afternoon, Oct. 31, 1997, at her residence following five years of declining health.
Born Aug. 12, 1908, in Rockingham County, she was a daughter of Julious Daniel Evans and Martha Frances Chilton Evans.
She was married
to William Houston Ward, who died June 25, 1987.
Since 1938, she had lived in the Shady Grove community, where she was a homemaker.
She was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church and the Pelham Homemakers Club.
She was the last member of her generation of the family.
She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Joyce Ward of Providence; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two children, G.W. Ward and Anne W. Martin; and four brothers and five sisters.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Rufus Butner. Burial will be in Happy Home Church Cemetery in Highway 700 in Rockingham County.
The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her daughter-in-law, 3404 Shady Grove Road, Providence.
Almalene Pyles
SEMORA, N.C. - Almalene Pyles, 68, Highway 57, died Friday, Oct. 31, 1997, at her residence.
A native of Caswell County, she was a daughter of George and Ruby Pyles.
She was a member of Oak Level A.M.E. Church in Milton.
She is survived by her sister, Lois Hamlett of Yarboro Mill Road, Milton.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m., Wednesday at Oak Level A.M.E. Church by the Rev. Daisy Long. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Viewing for family and friends will be held at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel tonight. The family will be at the residence of her sister.

Virginia Gunnell
PELHAM, N.C. - Virginia Irene Chappell Gunnell, 57, 2148 Chandler Mill Road, died early Wednesday morning, Nov. 5, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
A native of Surry County, she was a daughter of William Daniel Chappell and Laura Chappell, who survives.
She was married
for 38 years to Kenneth Gunnell, who survives.
She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her mother of Pelham and husband of the residence, survivors include three children, Barbara Gunnell Dildy of Houston, Tommy Lee Gunnell of Pelham, and Brenner Tyree Harris of Ruffin; a brother, William Chappell of Eden; a sister, Hazel Dalton of Mt. Airy; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m., Friday at Lively Stones Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Reidsville and other times at the residence.
