Sylvester Smith

PELHAM, N.C. - Sylvester Smith, 1555 Dibrell Road, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 1997, at Stratford Medical Center in Danville, Va.

He was born in Pittsylvania County, Va.

He was a member of Bluestone Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, a member of the Trustee Board and a member of the senior choir.

He was a retired veterinarian and herdsman.

He was the Building Fund Treasurer of the Cedar Grove Association and a member of Pelham Masonic Lodge No. 571.

He is survived by two sons, William S. Smith of Chicago and Charles D. Smith of Roanoke, Va.; three daughters, Althea Inghram of Durham, Earliest Drake of Greensboro and Estelle Stacey of Reidsville; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday at Bluestone Baptist Church by the Rev. J.B. Doe. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Bluestone Baptist Church.

McLaurin Funeral Home of Reidsville is in charge of arrangements.

Valerie Barker

Valerie Ray Barker, 43, 4852 N.C. Highway 57, Semora, N.C., died Sunday, Aug. 24, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for several years.

Born July 27, 1954 in Halifax, she was a daughter of William Nelson Barker and Frances Warren Barker, who survives.

She lived most of her life in Semora, N.C. She participated in all Trade activities.

In addition to her mother of the residence, survivors include a sister, Rita B. Wilkerson of Summerville, S.C.

In addition to her father, she was predeceased by two sisters, Pamela Leigh Barker and Angela Barker McDowell.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from Lebanon Christian Church by the Rev. Frank Gorton. Burial will be in the Lebanon Christian Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight 7-8:30 at Barker Funeral Home and at all other times at the residence.

Katie Jeffries

Katie M. Moore Jeffries, 73, 230 Jeffries Road, Milton, N.C., died Saturday, Aug. 23, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born March 30, 1924 in Caswell County, N.C., she was a daughter of Shepard Moore and Maggie Mitchell Moore.

She was married icon to James Jeffries.

She was a member of the Hamer Missionary Baptist Church in Blanch, N.C.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Jean Jeffries of the residence, Cynthia Richmond of Providence, N.C. and Elaine Cunningham of Semora, N.C.; four sisters, Sherdenia Harris of Danville, Blondelia Cobbs and Martha M. Boyd, both of Washington, D.C., and Eunice Lownes of Harrisburg, Pa.; three brothers, David Moore of Washington, D.C., Benjamin Moore and Lawrence Moore, both of Blanch, N.C.; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday from the Hamer Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Cephus Lea. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Hamer Missionary Baptist Church 7-8 tonight and other times at the residence.

Plenty Funeral Home, Semora, N.C., is in charge of arrangements.

Katie Tate

HIGH POINT, N.C. - Katie B. Tate, 85, of Wesleyan Arms Nursing Center, died Monday, Sept. 1, 1997, at the center.

Born May 21, 1912, in Rutherford, N.C., she was the daughter of Zeno Deaver and Georgia Turner Barnett.

On Dec. 21, 1929, she was married icon to Hoyt Ray Tate, who died in December of 1961.

After leaving Danville, Va., she had been a resident of High Point for seven years.

She was retired from King of the Sea in Danville, Va.

She was an active member of the Senior Citizen Club for a number of years, and a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Danville, Va.

Survivors include two daughters, Frances Farrington of High Point and Barbara Beasley of Richmond, Va.; a son, Eugene Ray Tate of Herndon, Va.; a brother, William Henry Barnett of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Cumi Samantha Phizacklia; and a son, William Dean Tate.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain by the Rev. Harold Schwantes.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Frances Farrington, 611 Burning Tree Circle, High Point.

Sechrest Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Michael Watkins

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Michael James Watkins, 29, of 28 New Walter's Mill Road, died Monday, Sept. 1, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington.

Born Mar. 2, 1968, in Rocky Mount, he was a son of Selby James Watkins and Brenda Joyce Smith Watkins, who survives.

He was employed by C & J Graphics in Burlington.

He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his mother of the residence, survivors include a sister, Patricia Lynn Watkins of Raleigh; a brother, David Watkins of Greensboro; his maternal grandmother, Pansey A. Smith of Providence; and his paternal grandmother, Lois B. Weeks of Rocky Mount.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Rocky Mount Memorial Park by the Rev. Bill Medlin in Rocky Mount.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Marley Funeral Home, Yanceyville, and other times at the residence.

Inez Atkinson

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Inez Frances Alderson Atkinson, 85, of 1700 Pamalee Drive, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 1997, at Highland House Nursing Home.

Born Jan. 17, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was a daughter of Jacob Thomas Alderson and Frances Chaney Alderson.

She was married icon to Raymond F. Atkinson.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Fayetteville.

Survivors include a sister, Beulah Davis of Vernon Hill; four nieces, Lori Ann Riano of Danville, Va., and Frances Moorefield of South Boston, Va., and Jean A. Hensley of Brookneal, Va., and Allene Wilborn of Roanoke, Va.; and two nephews, Ricky Hudson of South Boston, Va., and Frank Alderson of Cadiz, Ky.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Joseph Willis. Burial will be 2 p.m. Friday in Guilford Memorial Park in Greensboro.

The family will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Davis, 14211 Mountain Road, Vernon Hill, Va.

Stephen Kemp Pettyjohn

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Stephen Kemp Pettyjohn, 25, died Friday, Aug. 29, 1997.

Born Dec. 14, 1971, in Sumter, S.C., he was a son of the Rev. Walker and Sydney Smith Pettyjohn, who survive.

He was a graduate of Western Albemarle High School in Crozet, Va., where he won the 1990 AA State Pole Vault Championship.

He also won first place in the Boys Prose Division of the 1990 Forensic District and Regional Competitions, and placed fifth in the state competition.

He was a member of Toastmasters International and Phi Theta Kappa Scholastic Honor Society. He was a volunteer with Contact Crisis Line.

He was a recent cum laude graduate of Warren Wilson Presbyterian College in Asheville.

He was a member of Chatham Presbyterian Church in Chatham, Va.

In addition to his parents of Chatham, Va., survivors include two older brothers, Jon Blair Pettyjohn of Arlington, Va., and Walker Evan Pettyjohn of Charlottesville, Va.; a paternal grandmother, Frances K. Pettyjohn of Lynchburg, Va.; and a special friend, Cristi.

A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 1997, at Warren Wilson College Chapel by Chaplain Rob Martin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your nearest chapter of the Alliance for the Mentally Ill or Warren Wilson College, P.O. Box 9000, Asheville, N.C. 28815-9000.

Robert 'Junior' Morris

RUFFIN, N.C. - Funeral services for Robert "Junior" Lewis Morris, 30, will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church by the Rev. James Mayes and the Rev. Thornton Manley.

Burial will be in the church cemetery in Caswell County.

He died Monday afternoon, Sept. 8, 1997, before being brought to Morehead Memorial Hospital, Eden, as a result of a construction accident at his job.

He lived at 1838 Ashland Road in Ruffin.

Born April 20, 1967, in Reidsville, he was a son of Robert Lewis Morris Sr. and Jearleen McKinney Booth, who survive.

He was married icon to Sharon Beggarly Morris, who survives.

He had spent most of his life in Danville, Va., and had lived in the Ruffin community for the past two years.

He attended George Washington High School in Danville, and was of the Primitive Baptist faith.

For the past three weeks, he had worked as a truck driver for Triad Masonry in Reidsville, hauling concrete and brick. Before that, he had worked for Morris Roofing in Reidsville.

In addition to his mother of Danville, Va., his father of Ruffin and his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Heather Marie Morris of the residence; two sisters, Tonia Booth of Danville, Va., and Buffy Contece of Greensboro; two brothers, Malcolm Gordon Booth of Danville, Va., and Richard Hundley Booth of Chatham, Va.; his stepfather, Gordon Booth of Danville, Va.; his paternal grandmother, Thelma Morris of Reidsville; and his paternal great-grandmother, Lula Cook of Reidsville.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Narver and Frances McKinney.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of his mother and stepfather, 213 Crestwood Drive in Danville.
