Frances Aldridge

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Frances West Aldridge, 63, 9102 S. N.C. 62, died Friday, Sept. 12, 1997, at her residence, after several years of declining health.

Born in Caswell County, she was retired from The Brian Center in Yanceyville.

She was the daughter of Joel A. West Sr. and Bessie Sparks West.

She attended Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church.

She was married icon to Loftin S. Aldridge Sr., who survives.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Dale A. Apple of Yanceyville; one son, L. Scott Aldridge of the residence; two sisters, Brattie West Gregory of Wilkesboro, and Geneva West Payne of Mebane; three brothers, Joel A. West Jr. of Greenville, Thomas Lee West of Burlington, and Dennis Neal West of Bethel; and two grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two daughters, Bessie Lee Aldridge and Shelia Marie Aldridge; two sisters, Alice West Schmidt and Dorothy West Norris; and one brother, Arvil West.

The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday at Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Wallis Smith. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington, and other times at the residence. The body will be placed in the church to lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service.

Katharine Kendall

RALEIGH, N.C. - Katharine Kerr Kendall, 2814 Exeter Circle, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 1997, after a short illness.

Born in Yanceyville, she was a daughter of Albert Yancey and Mary Oliver Kerr.

She was married icon to Col. Henry E. Kendall, who died in 1981.

She was a graduate of Meredith College. After graduation, she was employed with the U.S. Employment Service in Goldsboro and Raleigh for several years.

For the last 25 years, she had pursued her interest in genealogical research, in history and as an author of numerous books on these subjects.

She is the author of and has published 15 books on historical and genealogical records in Caswell and Person Counties. She is a recognized national genealogist, has done work for families in 48 states and in Canada, and is listed in Who's Who in Genealogy in the United States.

She also authored and published a booklet on the history of the Yanceyville Presbyterian Church, and most recently has published articles for the N.C. Genealogical Journal on Presbyterian records.

She was active in the publication of the Caswell County Heritage book.

She was a member of White Memorial Presbyterian Church, a 50-year member of Sir Walter Cabinet and Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member and past regent of Samuel Johnston Chapter.

She was also a member of the National and State Genealogical Societies, Wake County and Caswell County Historical Societies and the Preservation Society of N.C.

In addition, she was a member of the N.C. Museum of History, the North Carolina Archives and History, Friends of the Library of Meredith College and the Wake County Democratic Women's Association.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Frances Kerr Donaldson of Raleigh.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her brother, George Yancey Kerr.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at White Memorial Presbyterian Church. Burial will be 3 p.m. Thursday in Yanceyville Presbyterian Church.

Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Raleigh, is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy McDowell

PELHAM, N.C. - Funeral services for Dorothy Roberts McDowell, 69, 3609 Shady Grove Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Shady Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Rufus Butner.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She died early Monday morning, Sept. 15, 1997, at Shore Memorial Hospital in Nassawadox, Va. She had been in declining health for the past two years.

Born Sept. 30, 1927, in Greensboro, she was a daughter of Percy Roberts and Florence Farmer Roberts.

She was married icon to Raymond L. McDowell, who died Feb. 17, 1982.

Most of her life was spent in Pelham, where she was a homemaker. Her early life was spent in Greensboro.

She was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Caswell County Homemakers Club.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy M. Stewart of Exmore, Va.; a son, Joseph R. McDowell of Pelham; four sisters, Irene Warren of Brown Summett, Frances Leonard of New Orleans, Helen Lamberth of Sandy Ridge and Carolyn Warren of Greensboro; six brothers, Percy Lee Roberts, Charles E. Roberts Sr., Richard Roberts and Lawrence Roberts, all of Greensboro, Johnny Roberts of McClainsville and David Roberts of Whitchet; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of Anne and Julius Lee Clayton, 3724 Shady Grove Road in the Pelham community.

Shirley Long

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Shirley Slade Long, 1026 Pallie Watlington Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 1997, at her residence.

Born Aug. 20, 1954, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of Ervin Slade and Dorothy Watlington Slade, who survive.

She was married icon to William Irvin Long, who survives.

She was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church.

She was employed as a computer operator for Cone Mills White Oak Plant in Greensboro.

In addition to her husband of the residence, her mother of Yanceyville and father of Greensboro, survivors include two daughters, Melissa Long and Melinda Long, both of Yanceyville; three brothers, William Forrest Slade, Robert Lee Slade and Keith Lamont Slade, all of Yanceyville; three sisters, Caroline Marie Slade, Hope Slade and Katina Nichole Slade, all of Yanceyville; her grandmother, Ruth Watlington Slade of Yanceyville; and a grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at the Cedar Grove Memorial Building in Yanceyville by the Rev. Freddie Seabrook. Burial will be in Mineral Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at Fulton Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

Claude Dixon

ROXBORO, N.C. - Claude Hamilton Dixon, 81, 229 Crestwood Drive, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 1997, at Person Memorial Hospital.

Born in Person County, he was the son of Raymond E. Dixon and Idema Clayton Dixon.

He was married icon to Sadie Johnson Dixon, who survives.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.

A former resident of Arlington, Va., he was a retired inspector with the license division of Department of Transportation in Washington, D.C.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 1081, Elks Lodge No. 2005 and Amvet.

In addition to his wife, a former resident of Danville, Va., survivors include a stepson, Johnny W. Eanes of Danville, Va.; a stepdaughter, Jean E. Scearce of Danville; three sisters, Nellie Rae Terrell of Groveland, Fla, and Ann D. Cook of Danville, and Betty D. Bollendorf of Crozet, Va.; four step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Brooks & White Chapel by Dr. Clay Warf. Burial will be in Burchwood Cemetery, where Masonic rites will be performed.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Hattie Thompson

BLANCH, N.C. - Hattie Mae Winstead Thompson, 87, of Cherry Hill Farm, 3811 Longs Mill Road, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 1997, at Roxboro Nursing Center in Roxboro.

Born Sept. 20, 1909, in Person County, she was a daughter of Nash Lea Winstead and Lizzie Featherstone Winstead.

She was married icon to Currie Kerr Thompson Jr., who died in 1983.

For more than 60 years, she was a member of Red House Presbyterian Church, where she was church treasurer and a former Sunday school teacher.

After 32 years of service, she retired as a principal with Caswell County School System.

She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma.

Survivors include a daughter, Lea T. Brady of Blanch; a son, Currie Kerr Thompson III of Gettysburg, Pa.; two brothers, Keith Winstead of Danville, Va., and Dr. Nash N. Winstead of Raleigh; three sisters, Annie C. Clover of Raleigh, Lizzie Dawson of Dunn and Jean Davis of Leasburg; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Red House Presbyterian Church, Semora, by the Rev. James Tippens. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Marley Funeral Home, Yanceyville, is in charge of arrangements.

LuEtta C. Aldridge

BURLINGTON, N.C. - Mrs. LuEtta C. Aldridge, 83, of 3731 Luther Court, Twin Lakes Retirement Center, and formerly of Yanceyville, died Saturday, June 7, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 1, 1914, in Pittsylvania County, Va., and was the daughter of Reuben H. Carroll and Marthann Patterson Carroll.

She was a graduate of Cobb High School and was employed by Dan River Inc. before leaving to raise a family and become a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, James P. Aldridge Sr. of the residence, Twin Lakes, Burlington. They were married icon 61 years.

Other survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Telford of Durham and Peggy LuEtta Aldridge of Burlington; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James Preston Aldridge Jr. of Macon, Ga., and Mr. Carroll Lee Aldridge of Kernersville; four sisters, Virgie C. Wood of Yanceyville, Omie C. Poteat of Danville, Va., Bernice C. Goodson of Danville, Minnie C. Powell of Providence; two brothers, Edgar Carroll of Yanceyville and Mac Alvin Carroll of Providence; four grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. David Dugan and Mr. Lawrance H. Best, both of Durham, Mr. and Mrs. Kevin G. Whitehead of Mebane and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J.P. Aldridge of Macon; and one great-grandson, Dave Christopher Dugan.

She was predeceased by an infant daughter and three sisters, Theo C. Lovell, Nettie C. Poteat and Bertha C. Travis; and three brothers, Swanson Carroll, Raymond Carroll and William Carroll.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Prospect United Methodist Church by the Rev. Scott Wilkinson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Edna Harris

AXTON - Edna Trent Harris, 78, 5900 Axton Road, died Monday, June 9, 1997, in Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C.

She was a native of Rockingham County, N.C.

She was a member of Lone Oak Baptist Church.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Fieldcrest. She also worked for Harris Grocery Store at the time of her death.

Survivors include a daughter, Cathy Harris of the residence; two sons, Mike Harris of the residence and James Harris of Martinsville; a brother, Jim Trent of Stoneville, N.C.; four sisters, Frances Cox of Reidsville, N.C., Susie Roberts of Pine Hall, N.C., Thelma Gibson of Belews Creek, N.C., and Johnnie "Becky" Duggins of Stoneville; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday from Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Overlook Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the residence, where they will also be at other times.
