Claire Scearce
PROVIDENCE, N.C. - The graveside service for Mabel Claire Booker Scearce, 85, of Shady Grove Road will be held 11 a.m. today at Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Larry Edmonds.
She died Wednesday, June 25, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 28, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was a daughter of John W. Booker and Mabel Wells Booker.
She was married
to Lester Scearce, who predeceased her.
She was retired from the Caswell County School System, where she was cafeteria manager at Pelham school.
She was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a brother, William J. Booker of Danville, Va.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her brother, 1040 South Main St.
Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Charles Brown
PELHAM, N.C. - Charles Edward Brown, 54, 840 Holland Road, died Wednesday, June 25, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 28, 1942, in Caswell County, he was a son of Herman H. Brown and Lucy Beard Brown, who survives.
He was married
to Frances Price-Brown.
In addition to his wife and mother, survivors include a daughter, LaTonja Roshayle Brown of Winston Salem; and three brothers, Henry Brown and Paul Brown, both of Pelham, and Larry Brown of Danville, Va.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday at Smith Chapel Baptist Church in Pelham by the Rev. George H. Pass. Burial will be held at Smith Chapel Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Janice Burns
REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Janice M. Burns, 51, 236 Gilmer St., Apartment No. 35, died Thursday evening, June 26, 1997, at her residence.
She was a daughter of Andrew Jackson Gibson and Della Gibson, who survives.
She was a native of Rockingham County.
She was a member of Lively Stones Baptist Church.
She received her B.S. Degree in business and economics from Greensboro College. She was an accountant and a teachers assistant at Rockingham Community College.
She was a member of Alphi Kappa Pi, Zeta Alumni Chapter of Phi Thetta Kappa Honor Society, and Alpha Kappa Omega Honor Society. She was a member of New Concepts Republican Women.
She was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Award from Rockingham Community College.
In addition to her mother of Reidsville, survivors include a daughter, Tina B. McGregor of Danville, Va.; three sons, Anthony "Tony" Burns and Timothy Burns, both of Reidsville, and Tex R. Burns Jr. of Greensboro; six brothers, Leonard J. Gibson, Ben Gibson, and Floyd Gibson, all of Reidsville, Charles Gibson of Greensboro, and James Gibson and Wayne Gibson, both of Garner; two sisters, Frances Tate and Elaine Scott, both of Reidsville; and eight grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Bernard Allen Gibson and Cecil Albert Gibson, and a sister, Margaret Ann Gibson Martin.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Wilkerson Funeral Home. Burial will be held at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Wilkerson Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of a sister, Frances Tate, 309 Acme St., Reidsville.
James Totten
REIDSVILLE, N.C. - James Adams Totten, 72, 73 Stoney Creek Road, died Friday, June 27, 1997, in Alamance/Caswell Hospice Care Home in Burlington.
Born July 2, 1924, in Caswell County, he was a son of James Franklin Totten and Ollie Turner Totten.
He was married
to Jessie Poteat Totten, who survives.
He was a member of Blackwell Missionary Baptist Church, where he was an usher.
He was a self-employed tobacco farmer.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Vernell Totten Sr. of Yanceyville and James Kenneth Totten of Reidsville; five daughters, Dorothy Totten, Brenda Totten, and Ollie Graves, all of Reidsville, Linda Brown and Mabel Graves, both of Yanceyville; three brothers, Herman Totten of Yanceyville, Willie Earl Totten of Reidsville and Thomas Lee Totten of Eden; two sisters, Mary Emma Gwynn of Yanceyville and Wilma Johnson of Reidsville; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Blackwell Baptist Church by the Rev. Everett Dickerson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Blackwell Baptist Church, and other times at the residence.

Garland Cobb
RUFFIN, N.C. - Garland Julius Cobb, 46, 3171 Ashland Road, died Tuesday, July 1, 1997, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro following several months of declining health.
Born in Caswell County, he was the son of Haywood Cobb and Nancy Totten Cobb.
He attended Caswell County Schools.
He was an insurance adjuster. He worked with the Job Corps for two years.
He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents of the residence, survivors include four sisters, Peggy Worley of Yanceyville, and Wendy Tickle, Susan McKinney and Lisa Walker, all of Reidsville; and four brothers, Ronnie Cobb, Guy Cobb, Ricky Cobb and Rocky Cobb, all of Ruffin.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Kent of Lively Stones Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Hooper Funeral Home, Yanceyville, N.C., and other times at the residence.
Carroll Simpson
PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Carroll Bennett Simpson, 70, 120 Short Road, died Monday, June 30, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
A native of Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Percy Simpson and Bessie Griffith Simpson.
He was married
to Janice A. Simpson, who predeceased him.
He attended Pittsylvania County Schools.
He was a machinist at Recapping Machinery, and served in the United States Army.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons, Tim Simpson of Chatham, Va., and Dennis Simpson of Providence; a sister, Mary Lou Labie of Danville, Va.; two brothers, Harvey Simpson of Providence and C.G. Simpson of Danville; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Hooper Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Ken Clark. Burial will be at Providence Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Harvey Simpson, 358 Bill Smith Road.
Alma Patterson
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Alma Evelyn Grove Patterson, 89, of Carolina Meadows died Tuesday, July 1, 1997, at U.N.C. Hospital.
Born Oct. 17, 1907, in Armstrong, Ill., she was a daughter of Pearl Forest Grove and Janie Kissick Grove.
She was married
to John Sutton Patterson, who predeceased her.
She graduated from the University of Illinois.
She was a former director of cafeteria services in Chevy Chase High School in Bethesda, Md.
She was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include three sons, Dr. John Richard Patterson of Danville, Va., Donald Sutton Patterson of Chapel Hill and Scott Grove Patterson of Easton, Md.; a brother, Eugene Forest Grove of Mt. Pleasant, Mich.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Arlington National Cemetery, Fort Myer, Va., by a U.S.N. chaplain.

Helen Jackson
SNOW CAMP, N.C. - Helen Taylor Jackson, 90, died Saturday, July 5, 1997, at Care View Rest Home.
Born Oct. 17, 1906, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Nathaniel and Ada Pinchback Taylor.
Prior to entering the rest home, she spent her entire life in Caswell County.
She was a graduate of East Carolina University.
Prior to her retirement after 30 years, she taught school in Anderson, Prospect Hill and Yanceyville schools.
She was a member of Yanceyville United Methodist Church.
She was married
to William "Bill" Carlton Jackson, Sr., who died in 1977.
She is survived by a son, William "Bill" Jackson, Jr. of Kure Beach; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Winnie T. Chandler; and a brother, William Claire Taylor.
The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Monday at Yanceyville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Vassar Jones. Burial will be in New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Marley Funeral Home, Yanceyville.
