Catherine Goodman
PELHAM, N.C. - Catherine Lewis Goodman, 80, of 681 Goodman Road, died Tuesday morning, July 8, 1997, at her residence following declining health since last September.
Born Oct. 21, 1916, in Caswell County, she a daughter of Vester Daniel Lewis and Cornelia Cook Lewis.
She was married
to Roy Thomas Goodman, who died June 4, 1971.
Her entire life was spent in the Pelham community.
She was retired from the spinning department of Dan River, Inc.
She was a member of Stokesland Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for 47 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Powell of Blanche; three sons, Raymond Goodman and Neal Goodman, both of Pelham, and Danny Goodman of Providence; two sisters, Pauline Gravley and Shirley Horsley, both of Danville, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Thomas Goodman.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Stokesland Baptist Church by the Rev. Don G. Frank.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Shirley Francis Martin Essa
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Shirley Francis Martin Essa, of 125 McIver St. died Wednesday, July 9, 1997, at her daughter's home in Wilmington.
Born March 14, 1930, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Charles Edward and Virginia Reeves Martin.
She was a charter member of Woodlawn Baptist Church in Danville, Va.
She graduated from Schoolfield High School, and The Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Hospital in Clifton Forge, Va.
She was employed as a registered nurse for the UNC-Greensboro Student Health Center.
She is survived by her four children, James Alex Essa and his wife, Mary, of Richmomd, Va., Michael Steven Essa Sr. of Greensboro, Linda Essa McMurry and her husband, Warren, of Wilmington, and Thomas Isaac Essa of Los Angeles; a sister, Iris Ireson of Danville, Va.; a brother, Clyde E. Martin of Lynchburg, Va.; and six granchildren, Michael Essa II, Jonathan Essa, Rob Essa, Jennifer Essa, Christopher McMurry, and Hannah McMurry.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home, North Elm Street chapel, Greensboro. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at St. Andrews Episcopal Church.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Woodlawn Baptist Church.
Alvin Keen
REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Alvin A. Keen, 74, of 1104 Larkwood Drive, died Monday, July 14, 1997, at Annie Penn Hospital.
He was a native of Pittsylvania County, Va.
He was married
to Opal Powell Keen, who survives.
He was retired from American Tobacco Company.
He was a faithful member of the Reidsville Alliance Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Barbara Aheron of Waldorf, Md., and Patsy Draughn of High Point; a stepdaughter, Beverly Ward of Reidsville; two brothers, Jimmy Keen of Eden and Harold Keen of Providence; two sisters, Anne Thornton of Chase City, Va., and Ruby Smith of Yanceyville; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday at Reidsville Alliance Church. Burial will be held at Reidlawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Wilkerson Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Mary Edwards
SOUTH MILLS, N.C. - Mary Stiles Edwards died Wednesday afternoon, July 16, 1997, at a hospital in Elizabeth City following several months of declining health.
She was married
to Bryant Edwards, who survives.
She formerly resided in Danville, where she worked in No. 2 spinning room of the Schoolfield Division of Dan River Mills.
For the last 25 years, she has been a resident of South Mills.
In addition to her husband of South Mills, she is survived by a sister.
Twiford Funeral Home, Elizabeth City, is in charge of funeral arrangements, which are incomplete at this time.
The family will be at 108 River Bridge Road, South Mills.
Myrtle Allen
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Myrtle Adkins Allen, 88, 4211 Princeton Ave., died Friday, July 18, 1997, in Roman Eagle Memorial Home in Danville, Va.
Born Oct. 26, 1908, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of John Adkins and Nannie Hall Adkins.
She was married
to George Clifford Allen, who died in 1972.
She was a member of West Market Street United Methodist Church.
She was a retired bookkeeper foe Burlington Industries.
Survivors include two sisters, Stella Adkins Crowder and Melissa Adkins Starr, both of Danville, Va.; and a brother, Willie Claude Adkins of Danville, Va.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Forbis and Dick North Elm Street. Burial will be held in Guilford Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends before the funeral from 10-11 a.m. Monday at Forbis and Dick North Elm Street.
Hannon Browder Jr.
Hannon M. Browder Jr., 69, of Charlotte, N.C., died Saturday, July 19, 1997, at Presbyterian Hospital.
Born Jan. 18, 1928, in Danville, VA he was the son of Hannon M. Browder Sr. and Mary Christianson Browder.
He is survived by his wife, Natalie K. Browder.
A memorial service will be conducted 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Chapel at Presbyterian Hospital by the Rev. David Lytle.
Harry and Bryant Company, Charlotte, is in charge of arrangements.
Violet S. Wright
GRAHAM, N.C. - Violet Dawn Sams Wright, 66, of 2355 Lacy Holt Road, died Monday, July 21, 1997, at the University of North Carolina Hospital, Chapel Hill, following three years of declining health.
A native of Danville, Va., she was a daughter of Frank Sams and Viola LaPrade Sams.
She was married
to Ervin Eugene Wright, who preceded her in death.
She was retired from Royal Home Fashions, and attended Lebanon United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Holt of Graham; two stepdaughters, Barabara Althof of Rockwell, S.C., and Helen Chappell of Graham; two sons, Kenneth Dale Thomasson of Danville, Va., and Dennis Daryl Thomasson of California; a sister, Billie Sparrow of Maryland; a brother, Don Sams of Danville, Va.; and three grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lebanon United Methodist Church. Burial will be held in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane, and other times at the residence.
Christine Blackwell
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Christine Virginia Kimber Blackwell, 68, 1561 Burton Chapel Road, died Monday, July 21, 1997, at the residence of her daughter, 205 George Russell Road.
Born May 28, 1929, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of Walter Kimber and Hallie Wade Kimber.
She was married
to James "June" Blackwell, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Sweet Gum Grove Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir.
Survivors include four daughters, Alma B. Johnson, Stephanie McCaden, Barbara Blackwell and Jennifer Blackwell, all of Yanceyville; five sons, James Blackwell and Rickey Blackwell, both of Burlington, Walter Blackwell of Elon College, William Blackwell of Yanceyville and Houston Blackwell of Colorado; three sisters, Bernice Fuller and Annie Bigelow, both of Burlington, and Lassie King of Reidsville; three brothers, James Kimber of Green Level, Lorenzo Kimber of Yanceyville and Hurbert Kimber of Burlington; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Burton's Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Clarence Hairston. Burial will be held in Sweet Gum Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
The remains will be in the church at 10 a.m. Thursday before the funeral.

Richard Page
RUFFIN, N.C. - Richard Harrelson Page, 76, 10759 Park Springs Road, died Tuesday, July 22, 1997, in Annie Penn Hospital Skilled Care following several months of declining health.
Born in Caswell County, he was a son of Stephen Page and Mamie Harrelson Page.
He attended Caswell County Schools and served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of American Legion Post No. 89 of Yanceyville, and The Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.
He was a member and former deacon of Bethesda Presbyterian Church, where he was also a Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include Mary Alice Moore Page of the residence; a daughter, Judith P. Yarbrough of Elon College; two sons, Ed Page of Ruffin and Steve Page of King; a sister, Hazel P. Poteat of Providence; two brothers, B.J. "Buck" Page of Blanche and Joseph H. Page of Elon College; 13 grandchildren; and a grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Bethesda Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Reid Dalton and the Rev. Cleveland Duke. Burial will be held in the church cemetery, where military graveside rites will be performed.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Hooper Funeral Home, Yanceyville, and other times will be at the residence.
