Tressie Jefferson

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Tressie Blair Jefferson, 87, died Tuesday, July 22, 1997, at the Brian Center after several years of declining health.

Born July 25, 1909, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Willard Blair and Lily Herndon Blair.

She was married icon to Nathan J. Jefferson, who died June 28, 1989.

She was a member of Brethren Church, and spent most of her life in Pittsylvania County.

For 37 years she worked as a spoolerhand at Dan River, Inc.

Survivors include three daughters, Marie J. Green of Pelham, Frances J. Webb of Ringgold, Va., and Margie J. Powell of Danville, Va.; two sons, Reid Jefferson of Danville, Va., and J.D. Jefferson of Burlington; a sister, Mildred Ellis of Clinton, Md.; two brothers, Eldrich Blair and Morris Blair, both of Danville; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dale Watson and the Rev. Robert Carty. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of Margie and Bill Powell, 476 Dogwood Drive, Danville.

Leola Gilbert

Leola Miller Dailey Gilbert, 77, 6001 Bundy Court, Fayetteville, N.C., and formerly of Callands, died Tuesday, July 22, 1997, at Vencor Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.

Born March 19, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Joseph Miller and Madie Fuller Miller.

She was married icon to Freddie Dailey, and later she was married icon to Edward Gilbert.

She lived most of her adult life in the Bronx, N.Y., where she was a retired dietitian from Frances Sehriver Hospital.

She was a member of Greater Victory Baptist Church in the Bronx, N.Y.

She was also a member of Red Rose Chapter No. 66 of the Eastern Star and Medina Court No. 11 of New York.

She moved to Fayetteville, N.C., in 1991, where she affiliated herself with Mt. Sinani Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Fredrick Dailey of Fayetteville, N.C.; four brothers, Frank Miller and William Miller, both of Callands, George Miller of Pelham, N.C., and Allen Miller of Philadelphia; a sister, Joanna Jamerson of Callands; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Callands Baptist Church by the Rev. Samuel Scales Jr. Burial will be held in the Fuller Family Cemetery, Callands.

Her remains may be viewed at the church Saturday from 1 p.m. until the funeral.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her brother, William Miller, 13861 Callands Road, Callands.

Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.

William Carroll Sr.

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - William Henry Carroll Sr., 69, 1368 Park Springs Road, died Sunday, April 13, 1997, in North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, following several months of declining health.

Born in Caswell County, he was a son of Reuben H. and Marthann Patterson Carroll.

He was married icon to Betty Walker Newman Carroll, who survives.

He attended Caswell County schools and Oak Ridge Military Academy.

He retired from the post office after 33 years of service and received an award for one million miles of safe driving. He was also a building contractor.

He was a charter member of Providence Fire Department and a member of Providence Baptist Church. He was also a member of Cobb Ruritan Club and the Caswell Jaycees.

He also served in the U.S. Army.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Marthann Hooper of Yanceyville and Nancy Dalton of Danville, Va.; two stepdaughters, Kay Bridges of Greensboro and Bettie Newman of Morrisville; two sons, William H. "Bill" Carroll Jr. and Robert F. "Bobby" Carroll, both of Providence; three stepsons, Bruce Newman of Morrisville, Randy Newman of Clyde and Vincent Newman of Asheville; five sisters, Virgie C. Wood of Yanceyville, Omie C. Poteat and Bernice C. Goodson, both of Danville, Luetta C. Aldridge of Burlington and Minnie C. Powell of Providence; two brothers, Edgar Carroll Sr. of Yanceyville and Mac Carroll of Providence; seven grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by three sisters, Theo C. Lovell, Nettie Poteat and Bertha C. Travis; and two brothers, Swanson Carroll and Raymond Carroll.

The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday from Pelham United Methodist Church by the Rev. Michael Harrill and the Rev. Don Davidson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Hooper Funeral Home in Yanceyville, and other times at the residence.

Henry Harrelson

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Henry Harvey Harrelson, 88, 3264 Hodges Dairy Road, died Wednesday, April 16, 1997, in Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington.

A native of Caswell County, he was a son of William B. and Salena Walker Harrelson.

He was first married icon to Mary Jones Harrelson, who died in 1978. He was later married icon to Annie Smith Shelton Harrelson, who survives.

He had spent most of his life in Rockingham County, moving to Caswell County in 1979.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by American Tobacco Co. for 38 years. He was also a member of Greenwood Presbyterian Church, where he had served as a deacon.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two stepsons, Jerry Lee Shelton of Pelham and Clem Bryant Shelton Jr. of Reidsville; two stepdaughters, Delores S. Dameron of Pelham and Carol S. Lambert of Providence; a brother, Malcolm W. Harrelson of Ruffin; three sisters, Octola H. Poteat of Yanceyville, Gladys H. Rainey of Ruffin and Roberta H. Robertson of Reidsville; nine stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Greenwood Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Victor Scott and the Rev. William Reid Dalton III. Burial will be in Greenview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Citty Funeral Home in Reidsville, and other times at the residence.

Dorothy Fulk

MILTON, N.C. - Dorothy Radford Fulk, 64, died Thursday, April 17, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Bates of Stony Creek, Va.; three sons, Robert Fulk of Ringgold, Va., John Fulk of Milton, and James Fulk of Dry Fork, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and several brothers and sisters, including Frances Bourne and Opal Ward, both of Danville, Va.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Rena Gibbs.

A graveside service will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday in the Radford Family Cemetery in Floyd, Va., by Pastor Calvin Hines.

The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at Wood Funeral Home in Floyd.

Peggy Long

SEMORA, N.C. - Peggy Ann Palmer Long, 57, 1780 Cunningham Road, died Friday, April 18, 1997, in Haw River.

Born April 22, 1939, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of John Willard Palmer and Hattie Mae Pruitt Palmer.

She was married icon to Coy Samuel Long Sr., who predeceased her.

She was a homemaker and a member of Ephesus Baptist Church in Semora.

Survivors include two sons, Coy Samuel Long Jr. of Haw River and James Edward Long of Semora; four daughters, Shirley Elaine Montague of Roxboro, Shelia Robin Montague of Milton, Betty Jean Hudson of Alton, Va., and Rachel Ann Frances of Yanceyville; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday from Ephesus Baptist Church by the Rev. L.L. Watlington. Burial will be in Person Memorial Cemetery in Roxboro.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Brooks & White Funeral Home in Roxboro.

Norman Barker

MILTON, N.C. - Norman Gwynn Barker, 65, of 367 Norman Barker Road, died Sunday, April 20, 1997, in the emergency room at Person County Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 29, 1931, in Caswell County, he was a son of William Joseph Barker and Ruth Nelson Barker.

He was a farmer and a member of Connally United Methodist Church.

He was married icon to Mary Agnes Collie Barker, who survives.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Douglas Barker of Hendersonville; Randy Barker and Ray Barker both of Milton; two daughters, Mary Lou Oliver of Semora and Julie Tatum of Yanceyville; two brothers, John Barker of Semora and Herman Barker of Richmond, Va.; a sister, Catherine Barbour of Ruffin; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild and two step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Nelson Barker.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lebanon Christian Church by the Rev. Frank Garton and the Rev. Clarence Garner. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Brooks and White Funeral Home, Roxboro, and other times will be at the residence.

Lilly Smathers

GASTONIA, N.C. - Lilly Dixon Smathers, 69, of 1835 Hartford Drive, died Saturday afternoon, April 19, 1997, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro after two years of declining health.

Born Nov. 2, 1927, in Watauga County, she was the daughter of Mahlon R. Dixon and Minnie Coleman Dixon.

She spent most of her life in Wilmington, Del., and Gastonia, where she was a homemaker and of the Holiness faith.

Survivors include two sons, Jackie Wayne Hayes of Martinsville and William Junior Hayes of Blairs; two sisters, Lizzie Dickens of Gastonia and Judy Jones of Pelham; one granddaughter, and two step-granddaughters.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Frances Langley and Mary Ann Dixon, and also a brother, James Dixon.

The graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Schoolfield Cemetery by the Rev. John C. Gentry. The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home 7-8:30 tonight, and other times will be at the resident of Bob and Verda Mitchell, 525 Ferry Road.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Daniel Abbott

PELHAM, N.C. - Daniel Allen Abbott, 47, 390 Jennings Blackwell Road, died Saturday, April 19, 1997, in his residence.

Born Jan. 3, 1950, in Danville, Va., he was a son of James Preston Abbott, who survives, and Dora Anderson.

In addition to his father of Maryland, survivors include his maternal grandmother, Lillie A. McLaughlin; a son, Derrick L. Walton of Danville; a daughter, Danlena L. Walton of Danville; three brothers, Preston L. Abbott of Pelham, Ricky A. Abbott and Michael K. Abbott, both of Reidsville; two sisters, Deborah A. Adams of Pelham and Angela Nyass of Atlanta; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday from Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. John B. Doe. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the home of Deborah Abbott Adams, 392 Jennings Blackwell Road, Pelham.
