Baby Eskridge

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Cierra Nicole Eskridge, infant, 1074 New Walters Mill Road, died Monday, April 21, 1997, in the University of North Carolina Hospital at Chapel Hill.

Born April 18, 1997, in Chapel Hill, she was a daughter of Cory Lee Eskridge and Rhonda May Horath, who survive.

In addition to her parents of Providence, she is survived by her paternal grandparents, Joanne and Gary Griffin of Providence; her paternal grandfather, Stephen Eskridge of Pelham; her maternal grandparents, Milton and Betty Coward of Danville, Va.; and a sister, Ashley Ann Coward of Danville.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Loretta Barber.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Ethel Graves

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Ethel Anita Graves, of Route 1, died Monday, April 21, 1997.

A native of Caswell County, she attended Lincoln Elementary School in Rockingham County and graduated from Bartlett Yancey High School in Yanceyville.

She also spent one year at Booker T. Washington School in Reidsville and two years at Caswell County Training School in Yanceyville.

In 1968, she received a bachelor of science degree from Winston-Salem State University.

She became a teacher in the Caswell County School System and later worked as a children's counselor in New York. In 1988, she began working at the U.S. Post Office, where she retired due to illness.

Survivors include four sisters, Barbara G. Hughes of Baltimore, Bernice G. Watson of Los Angeles, Carrie G. Williams of Roosevelt, N.Y., and Annie G. Booker of Greensboro; and two brothers, Jerry W. Graves of Reidsville and Banks Lawson Graves of Greensboro.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Sweet Gum Grove Baptist Church, 8609 Route 119 North, Mebane. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 6-7 tonight at Fulton Funeral Home in Yanceyville.

Nan Owen

SEMORA, N.C. - Nan Virginia Owen, 78, 14591 N.C. Hwy. 119 North, died Thursday, April 24, 1997, in Person County Memorial Hospital Annex in Roxboro. She had been in declining health for several years.

Born June 21, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was a daughter of C.J. Owen Sr. and Ruby Groves Owen.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed as Caswell County administrative assistant of the Board of Education for 41 years.

She was also a homemaker and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Janice Owen Wall of Semora; two sons, Wayne L. Owen of Blanch and David J. Owen of Providence; a sister, Dorothy O. Willis of Milton; and seven grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a sister, Blanche O. Clingman.

The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday from Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. David Williams. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park in Danville, Va.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Shiloh Baptist Church, and other times at the residence.

Marley Funeral Home of Yanceyville is in charge of arrangements.

Henry Watkins

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Henry Walter Watkins, of Emporia, Va., and formerly of Blanch, died Tuesday, April 22, 1997, in Virginia Beach General Hospital.

Born Sept. 3, 1920, in Caswell County, he was a son of Sterling and Maggie Lipscomb Watkins.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a security guard for the U.S. Government.

Survivors include a brother, Rudolph Watkins of Washington, D.C.; and six sisters, Wynolia W. Pulliam of Hollis, N.Y., Geraldine W. Macklin of Emporia, Va., Iris W. Rogers of Washington, D.C., Lt. Col. Ret. Aquilla W. Stanfield of Adelphi, Md., Orinda W. Daughtry of Virginia Beach, Va., and Annie M. Jackson of Capital Heights, Md.

The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Sunday from River Zion Baptist Church in Blanch by the Rev. Tyrone Thornton. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Virginia Watkins, 920 Roberts St., Danville, Va.

Fulton Funeral Home of Yanceyville is in charge of arrangements.

Ella Thacker

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - A private funeral was held for Ella C. Thacker on Saturday at Marley Funeral Home. Burial was in Yanceyville United Methodist Church's cemetery.

Thacker, 94, formerly of 2747 U.S. Highway 158 West, West Yanceyville, died Friday, April 25, 1997 at Danville Regional Medical Center in Danville, Va.

Born Nov. 9, 1902, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of John Thomas Carter and Annie Fullington Carter.

She was a homemaker.

She was predeceased by her husband, William C. Thacker Sr., who died in 1978. She was also predeceased by her son, W.G. Thacker Jr.

Survivors include one daughter, Naomi T. Pleasant of West Yanceyville; one sister, Mary Carter Swanson of Marion, N.C.; and one grandchild.

Wanda Wright

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Wanda L. Wright, 65, of 439 Bill Smith Road, died Tuesday at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 6, 1932, in Wichita, Kansas, she was the daughter of Claude Vernon Lockhart and Vizonia Clyborne Lockhart Howe.

She was retired from First Interstate Bank Card Co. as a clerical worker.

She was a member of Dayspring Baptist Church.

On Dec. 25, 1975, she was married icon to Hampton B. Wright, who survives.

In addition to her husband, survivors include three daughters, Kathy W. Smith of Eden, Glenda W. Snoke of Palmdale, Calif. and Vicki W. Erdman of Providence; two brothers, Jimmy Lockhart of Victorville, Calif. and Carl Lockhart of Portland, Ore.; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Mountain View Cemetery by the Rev. Calvin Hines.

The family will receive friends from 7:30-9 p.m. at Barker Funeral Home. At other times, te family will receive friends at the residence.

Ella Carrington

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The funeral for Ella Carrington, 72, of 910 Bonner Ave., will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Loyal Baptist Church. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park, Danville, Va.

She died April 22, 1997, at Moses H. Cone Hospital.

Born March 10, 1925, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Will Beard and Violet Wilson Beard.

Survivors include one son, Willie E. Carrington Jr. of Greensboro; five sisters, Kay B. Thompson of Las Cruces, N.M., Evelyn Lindsey of Richmond; Mildred Glaze of Danville, Virginia McConnell of College Park, Md. and Vivian Cleveland of Silver Springs, Md.; two brothers, Roland Beard and Alvesta Beard, both of Oxon Hill, Md.; and two grandchildren.

Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sarah Johnson

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Mrs. Sarah Totten Johnson, of 222 North First Ave., Yanceyville, N.C., died Saturday, April 26, 1997.

The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, April 30, 1997, at 11:00 a.m. at Blackwell Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Everett Dickerson officiating. Interment will follow

in the church cemetery.

She was born Aug. 22, 1912, in Caswell County, the daughter of the late Chester and Maggie Gwynn Totten. At an early age she joined Blackwell Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a faithful and devoted member. She served as president of the Missionary Circle and was a member of the Pastor's Aide Society.

In 1936, she was married icon to Irvin Johnson, who preceded her in death. To this union, five children were born. Irvin Johnson Jr. and wife Patricia; Charles Johnson and wife Sandra, all of Greensboro; Webster Johnson and wife Elizabeth; Betty J. Lownes and husband Vincent, and Sarah J. Wiggins and husband Chester all of Yanceyville. Other survivors are one sister, Mrs.

Maggie P. Long of Yanceyville; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 8 at Blackwell Baptist Church, and other times will be at the residence.

Fulton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lelia Compton

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Lelia Walker Compton, 65, 2235 South Scales St., died Tuesday, April 29, 1997, following a lengthy illness.

Born in Caswell County, she was a daughter of Harvey Abner Walker and Ara Loftis Walker.

For 50 years, she was married icon to John David Compton Sr., who survives.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Service America Vending Co.

She was a former member of Lawsonville Road Baptist Church and attended Covington Wesleyan Church.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Pamela Compton Daniels and Wilma Compton Lucas; two sons, John David Compton Jr. and Rob Compton; her stepmother, Vera C. Hogan of Winston-Salem; two half-brothers, H.A. Walker Jr. and Michael Walker; two half-sisters, Delores Rose of Yanceyville and Sandra Walker of Winston-Salem; and six grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Keith Aaron Compton.

The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday from Covington Wesleyan Church.

The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Reidsville, and other times at the residence.
