Cecille Duke
WASHINGTON, N.C. - Mrs. Cecille Patrick Duke, age 89, a resident of 408 East Tenth St., died Tuesday morning, April 29, 1997, at Beaufort County Hospital.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Paul Funeral Home, Washington, with the Rev. Ed Duetsch officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Frank Sheppard, Marshall Singleton, Dr. Richard Young, Melvin Hart, Gerald Cameron and Lee Latham.
Born Sept. 4, 1907, in Pitt County, Mrs. Duke was the daughter of the late Allen Lafayette and Bessie Coward Patrick.
She attended Louisburg Female Academy, Louisburg College, and was a graduate of East Carolina Teacher's College.
On Sept. 4, 1932, she married
Cleveland Strange Duke, who preceded her in death in 1950.
Mrs. Duke was a homemaker and a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church of Washington.
Survivors include two daughters, Anne Duke Sanders of Elizabeth City and Barbara Duke Jones of Washington; and a son, the Rev. Cleveland S. Duke Jr. of Providence. Also surviving are five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at Paul Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service also at the funeral home. The family will receive friends at other times at the home on 408 East Tenth St.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Deedie Lewis
REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Deedie Lewis, 116 Deer Trail Road, died February 26, 1997.
He was born Sept. 7, 1945.
He will always be remembered for his many talents, such as brick masonry and rock laying. He was employed at Lowe's in Reidsville.
He will be greatly missed by his family.
He is survived by Nancy Lewis; his son, Eston L. Lewis III, his daughter-in-law, Jamie Price Lewis; a grandson, Eston L. Lewis IV; a granddaughter, Emily Louise Lewis; his only sister, Bertha Lee Adkins, and her husband, WayneO. Adkins Sr.; his nephews, Buddy Adkins and Lee Adkins, and their children, Lauren Adkins, Nadine Adkins, and Jessica Barker; and his aunt, Lola Tanis.
Other surviving members include Connie Bowling, Debbie Jones, Kimberly Altizer, Kristin Jones, and John R. Bowling, all of Reidsville.
He will also be remembered by his closest friends, Leon Griffin, Jerry Hayes, and by his dog, "Griff."
Deedie Lewis
REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Eston Lee "Deedie" Lewis Jr., 51, 116 Deertrail Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 1997, in his residence, following 10 months of declining health.
Born Sept. 7, 1945, in Danville, Va., he was a son of Eston Lee Lewis Sr. and Lucy Brumfield Lewis.
He spent most of his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville. He was employed by Lowe's of Reidsville and was a self-employed rock mason until his health began to fail. He was also of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by a son, Elton Lee "Buster" Lewis III of Danville; a sister, Bertha Lewis Adkins of Ringgold; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday in Floral Hills Memory Gardens by the Rev. Carl E. Burger.
The family will receive friends at 316 Hillcrest Ave., off 58 East, Danville.

Nan Owen
SEMORA, N.C. - Nan Virginia Owen, 78, 14591 N.C. Hwy. 119 North, died Thursday, April 24, 1997, in Person County Memorial Hospital Annex in Roxboro. She had been in declining health for several years.
Born June 21, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was a daughter of C.J. Owen Sr. and Ruby Groves Owen.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed as Caswell County administrative assistant of the Board of Education for 41 years.
She was also a homemaker and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Janice Owen Wall of Semora; two sons, Wayne L. Owen of Blanch and David J. Owen of Providence; a sister, Dorothy O. Willis of Milton; and seven grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a sister, Blanche O. Clingman, and a brother, C.J. Owen.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday from Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. David Williams. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park in Danville, Va.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Shiloh Baptist Church, and other times at the residence.

Walter Thaxton
Walter James Thaxton, 75, of Milton, N.C. died Thursday, May 2, 1997.
A native of Caswell County, he was a son of Joseph and Ethel Thaxton.
He was a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include one son, Barry James Thaxton; one sister, Sarah Mears of Danville; three brothers, Tony Thaxton of Augusta, Ga., Joseph Thaxton and Willie Thaxton, both of Milton; and one grandson.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday at the New Zion Baptist Church in Milton by the Rev. Kimber.
Interment will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Plenty Funeral Home Chapel in Semora, N.C. today from 12-8 p.m.

Fred Oakes
BURLINGTON, N.C. - Fred Thomas Oakes, 70, of 2112 Joyce Court, died Tuesday, May 6, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center. He had been ill for three months.
Born in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of Edward Winkleton Oakes and Nannie McKinney Oakes.
He was retired from Western Electric after 32 years of service.
Oakes was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and the Telephone Pioneers. During World War II, he was a medic in the U.S. Army.
He was married
to Beatrice Gregory Oakes.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Barry Thomas Oakes of Gretna, Va.; four sisters, Thelma McMurtrey of Suffolk, Va., Garnett Doak of Danville, Va., Clara Mae Hughes of Virginia Beach, Va., and Belle Odham of Youngsville; three brothers, Charlie Oakes of Danville, Ralph Oakes of Reidsville, and Howard Oakes of Danville; and two grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a sister, Ella Crawford, and a brother, Irey Oakes.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Westminster Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Powell Sykes. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at the Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington and other times at the residence. The body will be taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
Sylvia B. Shoe
SELMA, N.C. - The funeral for Sylvia Burnette Shoe, 47, 515 New Creech Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Parrish Funeral Home.
She died Tuesday morning, May 6, 1997, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.
She was employed by Becky's Log Cabin in Smithfield, N.C., for the past 15 years.
Born in Danville and a former resident, she was a daughter of Jessie L. Burnette and Sallie Burnette Carter.
Survivors include two daughters, Kimberly C. Crouse of Thomasville, and Angelia S. Carroll of Selma; one son, Avery L. Shoe of Selma; three sisters, Nancy B. Dean, Patsy B. Scearce, and Brenda B. Burnette, all of Danville; two brothers, Ronnie L. Burnette of Collinsville, and Charles H. Burnette of Danville; and three grandchildren.
Preston M. Little
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Preston Manning Little, 80, 616 Rockford Road, died Friday, May 9, 1997, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 18, 1916, in Upper Penn's Neck, N.J., he was the son of Joseph Prescott Little and Beulah Manning Little.
He was married
to Elizabeth Holder Little for 51 years.
He attended The Cranbrook School in Bloomfield, Mich., and received a diploma from Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. He was a graduate of Yale College.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1941-46. He later was president of the National Automobile Dealers Service in Greensboro.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Prescott Manning Little Jr. of Charlotte, and Joseph Holder Little of New York City; two daughters, Elizabeth Jordan Little Stevens of Durham, and Anne Clarke Little Woolley of Richmond, Va., and nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by one son, Richard Michel Holder Little.
The funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greensboro. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. at Mountain View Cemetery by the Rev. James Mathieson of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany.

Gracie Blackwell
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Gracie Turner Blackwell, 80, of 142 Barber Shop Drive, died Saturday, May 10, 1997, at her home.
Born Nov. 17, 1916, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Willie Turner and Lucy Turner Hinton.
She was a homemaker and a member of Blackwell Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Berkley Blackwell Sr. of the home; two sons, Berkley Blackwell Jr. of Danville, Va., and Eddie Snipes of Yanceyville; three daughters, Gracie Blackwell Oliver of Danville, Va., and Lucy E. Blackwell and Flossie B. Hayes both of Yanceyville; one foster daughter, Margaret L. Woods of Leasburg; two brothers, James Hinton of Pelham and Houston Hinton of Reidsville; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday at Blackwell Baptist Church by the Rev. Everett Dickerson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Fulton Funeral Home, Yanceyville, and other times will be at the residence.
