Melvin J. Hall

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Melvin J. Hall, 58, of 6908 U.S. 158 West, died Friday, May 30, 1997, in Stokes County Memorial Hospital in Danbury, after a decline in health of several months.

Born May 17, 1939, in Caswell County, he was a son of Lewis Thomas and Novahlee Brinkley Hall.

He attended Caswell County Schools, having completed high school and college after entering the U.S. Navy. He was honorably discharged from the Navy after 25 years of service, having served during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts.

Survivors include one daughter, Melissa H. Baker of Las Vegas, Nev.; one son, Darrell Hall of Paulboro, Wash., a sister, Barbara East of Elon College, a sister and brother-in-law, Annie Lee and Kenneth Ellington of Ruffin; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Johnny and Brenda Hall of the residence, Sammy and Betty Hall, Louis and Eunice Hall, Gwynn and Diane Hall, all of Reidsville; and Jimmy and Georgia Ann Hall of Ridgeway, Va.; three brothers, Harley Hall of Reidsville, Tommy Hall of Eden, and Mack Hall of Crescent City, Ariz.; and one grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Hooper Funeral Home in Yanceyville by the Rev. Marie Reed. Interment will follow in the New Hope United Methodist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Fred W. McKinney

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Fred W. McKinney, 78, 3563 Shady Grove Road, died Saturday afternoon, May 31, 1997, in Annie Penn Hospital in Reidsville.

Born Aug. 20, 1918, in Caswell County, he was a son of George T. McKinney and Mary Durham McKinney.

He was married icon to Kathryn Williams McKinney, who survives.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army infantry, having served during World War II in the Battle of the Bulge.

He had lived his life in the Pelham area of Caswell County, where he was active in the community.

He was a former assistant chief of the Pelham Volunteer Fire Department for many years and belonged to Pelham United Methodist Church.

He was employed as a machine operator for 37 years with American Tobacco Co. in Reidsville.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Mark W. McKinney of Pelham, and one brother, Jesse A. McKinney of Eden.

The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Mike Harrill. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times will be at the residence.

Pauline S. Stephenson

WILLOW SPRING, N.C. - Pauline S. Stephenson, 79, of 266 Mt. Pleasant Road, died Sunday, June 1, 1997, at the Oasis of Four Oaks.

Born Aug. 18, 1917, in Johnston County, she was the daughter of Herbert and Eller Eason Sullivan.

She was married icon to Ralph S. Stephenson, who predeceased her.

She retired from ABB and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley S. Bledsoe and E. Marie Stephenson, both of Willow Spring; five sons, Glen Stephenson, Robert Stephenson, Frankie Stephenson and Ronnie Stephenson, all of Willow Spring, and Charles Stephenson of Danville, Va.; three sisters, Ruth Fowler of Willow Spring, Zilphia Ratliff of Garner and Ruby Bailey of Fuquay-Varina; one brother, James Sullivan of Selma; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Friendship Baptist Church by Brother Mack Fowler and Dr. Charles Ray Ennis. Burial will be in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens, Clayton.

The family will receive friends 7 to 9 tonight, and other times will be at the home.

Solomon Willis

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Solomon Willis, 73, of 4651 Highway 158 West, died Thursday, may 29, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 5, 1923, he was the son of Percy and Florida Jones Willis.

A native of Caswell County, he was a retired tobacco farmer and was a member of Blackwell Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir.

He also sang with The Gospel Four for 40 years, and with Sister Queen Willis and The Gospel Alstars for 12 years.

Survivors include his wife, Queen Willis of the home; three daughters, Margo W. Crisp of Mebane, Elaine Anderson of Big Island, Va., and Sharon Clark of Lynchburg, Va.; one step-daughter, Elsie Mae Long of Yanceyville; three step-sons, John H. Price Jr. of Reidsville, James. W. Price and Roger L. Price both of Yanceyville; one brother, Hurley Willis of Washington, D.C.; one sister, Arvister Williams of Yanceyville; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Blackwell Baptist Church by the Rev. Everett Dickerson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 tonight at Blackwell Baptist Church, and other times will be at the residence.

Fulton Funeral Home, Yanceyville, is in charge of arrangements.

Annie Hodges

RUFFIN, N.C. - Annie Laurie Lillard Hodges, 67, 2123 Quick Road, died Tuesday, June 3, 1997, in her residence.

Born in Caswell County, she was a daughter of Wharton and Leonie McKinney Lillard.

She was married icon to Kenneth A. Hodges, who died in 1991.

She spent her entire life in Caswell County, where she was a homemaker and a self-employed tailoress.

She was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church.

She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 239 in Yanceyville.

Survivors include a daughter, Pamela H. Rice of Reidsville; a son, Kenneth Dale Hodges of Ruffin; a brother, Albert "Buddy" Lillard of Ruffin; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Thursday from Citty Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Mary Palmer and the Rev. Kenneth Locklear Burial will be in Bethesda Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Margaret Slade

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Margaret Brown Slade, 576 Hodges Dairy Road, died Sunday, June 1, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 27, 1919, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of James and Lillie Watlington Brown.

She was married icon to William Otha Slade, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Blackwell Baptist Church.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a cook for Yanceyville Baptist Home.

Survivors include seven sons, Donnell Slade, Larry Slade, Charles Slade, Otha Slade, Bedford Slade, Willis Slade and Raymond Slade, all of Yanceyville; two daughters, Wilma Slade of Yanceyville and Lillie Slade of Patterson, N.J.; 18 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 4 p.m. Thursday from Blackwell Baptist Church by the Rev. Everett Dickerson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Fulton Funeral Home in Yanceyville, and other times at the residence.

Frances Mabe

Frances L. Mabe, 73, formerly of Harris Loop Road, Stoneville, N.C., died Wednesday, June 4, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

She was a native of Rockingham County, N.C.

She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a spinner for Spray Cotton Mill.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Echols of Danville; three sisters, Lillian Chilton, Clarice Odell and Pauline Baynes, all of Eden, N.C.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from Fairview Baptist Church. Burial will be in Ridgeview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Fair Funeral Home in Eden.

Pansy Liner

DURHAM, N.C. - Pansy Williams Liner, 71, 2895 Shaftsbury Drive, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 1997, in her residence.

Born June 27, 1925, in Schoolfield, Va., she was a daughter of J. Mack and Hattie Neely Williams.

She was married icon to Lemuel B. Liner, who survives.

She had lived in Durham since 1948. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Duke Medical Center for 25 years. She was also a member of Grey Stone Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband of Durham, survivors include a son, Anthony M. Liner of Durham; a sister, Maxie W. Highsmith of Durham; a brother, Jack C. Williams of Danville, Va.; and one grandchild.

The funeral was conducted Saturday, Feb. 8, 1997. Burial was held in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

Clements Funeral Home of Durham was in charge of arrangements.

David Stowe

WILLOW SPRING, N.C. - David Clayton Stowe, 34, 2248 Mt. Pleasant Road, died Monday, Feb. 17, 1997.

Born March 10, 1962, he was a son of Betty H. Brown and Dennis Stowe, who survive.

In addition to his mother of Willow Spring and his father of Danville, Va., survivors include a sister, Kiki Lee Brown of Willow Spring; two brothers, Mike Elliott of Danville and James Brown Jr. of Willow Spring; and his paternal grandmother, Odessa Stowe of Danville.

A memorial service will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday at the residence.

Bryan-Lee Funeral Home of Garner is in charge of arrangements.
