G.W. Ward
PROVIDENCE, N.C. - George William "G.W." Ward, 62, of 3404 Shady Grove Road, died Saturday morning, March 8, 1997, at his residence after being ill since December 1996.
Born Feb. 2, 1935, in Rockingham County, N.C., he was a son of Sarah Evans Ward and William Houston Ward.
A 1953 graduate of George Washington High School, he attended Vanderbilt University, where he played varsity football from 1953 to 1957. A U.S. Army veteran from 1956 to 1958, he had lived in Caswell County since 1938.
A farmer, Ward owned and operated Big Sale Warehouse in Danville, Va., until its merger with Piedmont Warehouse in 1993. Since then he was a partner in the operation of Piedmont-Big Sale.
He was a member of the Pelham Ruritan Club, where he served as president, and he served on the Caswell County Economic Development Board. Ward was also president of the Pelham Volunteer Fire Department and the Danville Tobacco Association. He had served as secretary of the flue-cured tobacco stabilization program.
Ward was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church, the Danville Golf Club, the German Club, and the Danville Young Men's Club.
In addition to his mother of Providence, survivors include his wife, Joyce Underwood Ward of the residence; two sons, George William Ward Jr. of Providence, and James Bryan LaPrade of Eden, N.C.; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Anne Martin Ward.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Rufus Butner. Burial will be in the Shady Grove United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times will be at the residence.
Page Marshall
NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C. - Page Marshall, 86, 1010 I. Street, died Sunday, March 9, 1997, in his residence, following a year of declining health.
Born July 16, 1910, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was a son of William Ira Marshall and Pearl Dawson Marshall.
He was married
to Lois Marshall, who died in 1990.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Carolina Mirror Co. in North Wilkesboro. He was also of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Foster of Hickory and Deborah Foster of Charlotte; a sister, Mae F. Williams of Keeling, Va.; two brothers, Madison Marshall of Dry Fork, Va., and William Marshall of Durham; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday afternoon in North Wilkesboro.
Charles "Butch" Jessie
REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Charles L. "Butch" Jessie, 53, 2161 Hwy. 14, died Tuesday, March 11, 1997, in Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.
He was a native of Rockingham County.
He was married
to Joyce Pierce Jessie, who survives.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by UPS for 22 years. He was also a member of Freedom Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include his mother, Dorothy Sands Jessie of Reidsville; three sons, Jeffrey Craig Jessie, J. Christopher Jessie and Kenneth Wayne Holly, all of Reidsville; three daughters, Carole Jessie Eckstrom, Tammy Chilton Culkin and Edie Begley, all of Reidsville; a sister, Karen Faith Jessie Agee of Reidsville; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Old Time Gospel Church in Eden. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Reidsville, and other times at the residence.
Ben "Cliff" Whitt Jr.
MILTON, N.C. - Ben "Cliff" Cliffers Whitt Jr., 28, 1542 Barker Road, died Wednesday, March 12, 1997, on Hwy. 49 North, near Buffalo Junction, as the result of an automobile accident.
Born Feb. 15, 1969, in Person County, he was a son of Ben C. Whitt Sr. and Carolyn Montague Whitt, who survive.
He was married
to Glenda Hodnett Whitt, who survives.
He was employed as a welder by PMS Construction. He was also a member of Faith Independent Baptist Church in Roxboro.
In addition to his parents and his wife, all of Milton, survivors include two sons, William Joseph Whitt and Brandon Ray Whitt, both of Milton; a daughter, Brooke Elizabeth Whitt of Milton; a brother, Matthew Whitt of Milton; a sister, Amy W. Pleasant of Milton; his grandmother, Rosa Montague of Semora; and his grandfather, Randolph Montague of Roxboro.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday from Brooks & White Funeral Home in Roxboro by the Rev. Ron Pruitt.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
George Wilson
EDEN, N.C. - George Washington Wilson, 67, 1020 Georgia Ave., Apt. 1, died Monday, March 10, 1997, in the Baptist Hospital of Winston-Salem.
Born Oct. 18, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was a son of Alex and Maggie Wilson.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Brown Products in Axton, Va.
Survivors include three sons, Gary Wilson of Eden, George K. Wilson of Philadelphia, and James L. Wilson of Charlotte; two daughters, Loretta Morrison of San Antonio, Texas, and Vera Woodbury of Charlotte; a brother, Benjamin Wilson of Cascade, Va.; a sister, Ruth Agnes White of Wilmington, Del.; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday from Piney Grove Baptist Church in Danville, Va. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Perry-Spencer Funeral Home in Eden.
Christine Royster
SEMORA, N.C. - Christine Royster, 73, 12932 Hwy. 119 North, died Thursday, March 13, 1997, in Durham Regional Hospital.
Born Oct. 8, 1923, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of Willie and Julie Richmond Royster.
She was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
Survivors include six sisters, Alease Phelps, Carrie Royster and Dorothy Cunningham, all of Semora, Louise Elmore of Leasburg, Annie Ruth Brandon of Alton, Va., and Jo Ann Chadwick of Jacksonville; and a brother, Robert Royster of Semora.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Milton by the Rev. Preston Medley. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body may be viewed from noon until 8 today at Plenty Funeral Home in Semora.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.
Lloyd Hairston
EDEN, N.C. - Lloyd Rex Hairston, 68, 161 Josephine Road, died Friday, March 14, 1997, in his residence.
Born in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was a son of Peter and Indiana Hairston.
He was married
to Mary Elizabeth Hairston, who survives.
He was a retired cement finisher and a member of Springfield Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Lloyd Rex Hairston Jr. of Eden, William H. Hairston of Virginia Beach, Va., and Floyd James of New Jersey; two daughters, Shirley Allen and Brenda A. Smith, both of Eden; three brothers, Jack Hairston of Danville, Va., Robert Hairston and Sam Hairston, both of Cascade, Va.; five sisters, Margaret Thomas and Mary Liza Price, both of Danville, Maebelle Tucker of Martinsville, Va., Anna Fountain of Axton, Va., and Ruby Hampton of Cascade; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from Springfield Baptist Church. Burial will be in R. Hairston Cemetery.

Janie Nance
WAKE FOREST, N.C. - Janie Custer Warren Nance, 78, 322 South Franklin St., died Tuesday, March 18, 1997, in Raleigh Community Hospital.
Born in Gretna, Va., she was a daughter of Robert Lee and Judy Doss Custer.
She was married
to W. David Nance, who survives.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Crompton Pilot Mill. She was also a member of Pilot Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Joyce Warren Wilson of Wake Forest and Patricia Warren Ray of Raleigh; two sons, R.J. Warren Jr. of Garner and Charles W. Warren of Oxford; a stepson, Sammy Nance of Raleigh; a sister, Nellie Phelps of Danville, Va.; a brother, Onyx Custer of Maryland; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday in Montlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Bright Funeral Home in Wake Forest, and other times at the residence of Joyce and Ed Wilson, 1749 North White St., Wake Forest.
Willie Rice
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Willie Fletcher Rice, 77, Melvin Wrenn Road, died Wednesday, March 19, 1997, in Roxboro Nursing Center.
Born April 12, 1919, in Caswell County, he was a son of Marion Rice and Mollie Brown Rice.
He was married
to Donnie Lowery Rice, who survives.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Jimmy Millner Plumbing Co. for 40 years.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Connie R. McCann of Milton; a son, William Rice of Graham; two sisters, Marie Taylor and Myrtle Myers, both of Pelham; two brothers, Horace Rice and John Rice, both of Providence; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A private graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Welcome Baptist Church Cemetery, Hwy. 62 North.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday at Welcome Baptist Church, and other times at the residence of his daughter, 781 N.C. Hwy. 57 North, Milton.
