Louise Swann

BLANCH, N.C. - Louise Hicks Swann, 63, 1059 Stephentown Road, died Wednesday, March 19, 1997, in UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, following several months of declining health.

Born Sept. 17, 1933, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of Dave Thomas Hicks and Onita Bowles Hicks.

She was married icon to John Swann, who survives.

She attended Caswell County schools. She was a homemaker and a member of Union United Methodist Church.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Deborah "Debbie" Jean Swann of the residence; three sons, Thomas "Tommy" Swann of the residence, John Swann Jr. of Leasburg and Gable Swann of Pelham; four sisters, Kathleen Webster, Doris Nance and Dolly Kleman, all of Yanceyville, and Nellie Whitt of Houston; and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Union United Methodist Church by the Rev. Gene Goldfinch. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday at Hooper Funeral Home in Yanceyville.

Sibyl Green

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - The funeral for Sibyl Gregory Green, 83, 630 New Walters Mill Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Barker Funeral Home Chapel by Mark Smith. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

She died Wednesday, March 19, 1997, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 28, 1913, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of Claiborne Gregory and Mineola Williams Gregory.

She was married icon to John William Green Sr., who died July 11, 1987.

She spent her entire life in the Caswell County area and was a member of Shady Oak Baptist Church.

Survivors include six daughters, Gay Cornell of Franklinton, Eva Barker of Long Beach, Betty Myers and Lora Blair, both of Providence, Jane Compton of Gretna, Va., and Roxie Burgess of Danville, Va.; two sons, John W. Green Jr. of Providence and Ray Green of Staley; five sisters, Susie Wright of Danville, Gypsie Boswell and Peggy Hill, both of Providence, Sarah Morgan of Yanceyville, and Bea Oakes of Burlington; two brothers, Jakie Gregory of Providence and Cooper Gregory of Ringgold; 23 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 23 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Amiel Scearce

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Mr. Amiel Noal Scearce, 66, of 1412 Walnut St., died Thursday, March 20, 1997, at his home.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Forbis and Dick North Elm Street Funeral Home Chapel, with burial following in Lakeview Memorial Park.

Mr. Scearce was a native of Pittsylvania County, Va., but had lived in Greensboro for many years. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was a retired sergeant first class of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

He is survived by his daughter, Frances S. Prusiecki of Tappahanock, Va.; his parents, Albert and Fannie Scearce of the home; a granddaughter, Miranda Prusiecki, and a great-grandson, Ethan Prusiecki, both of Tappahanock.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. Flowers are welcome, but memorials may be made to Hospice at Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, N.C., 27405.

Roy Coates

ROXBORO, N.C. - Roy Thomas Coates, 63, 319 Carter Lane, died Thursday, March 27, 1997, in Duke Medical Center.

Born in Halifax County, Va., he was a son of Callie William Coates and Nellie Mason Coates.

He served in the Army.

Survivors include his fiance, Margaret Bowes of Roxboro; three sons, Thomas W. Coates of Durham, Robert G. Coates of Hurdle Mills and John B. Coates of Roxboro; a daughter, Debbie C. Clayton of Roxboro; two brothers, the Rev. Cecil Coates of Providence and Carroll Coates of Roxboro; three sisters, Myrtle Carver and Louise Shepard, both of Roxboro, and Brenda Perkins of Durham; and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Brooks & White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Herbert Brown.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Annie Mabe

STONEVILLE, N.C. - Annie Lou Boothe Mabe, 96, of 107 Simpson St., died Thursday, March 27, 1997, at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church in Mayodan, with burial in the Old City Cemetery in Mayodan.

Mrs. Mabe was a life-long resident of Rockingham County. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Washington Mills Co. in Mayodan for 26 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Mayodan and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Posie Griffeth, Walter Lewis and Wash Mabe; and two children, David Lewis and Aleen Coleman.

She is survived by two stepdaughters, Margaret Williams of Mayodan and Elsie Cox of Reidsville; a brother, Leonard Boothe of Bassett, Va.; four grandchildren, Danny Lewis and his wife, Jean, of Stoneville, Randy Lewis of Greensboro, Sarah Ann Tuggle and Trish Smith, both of Stoneville; and five great-grandchildren, David Lewis of Greensboro, Danielle Lewis of Stoneville, Mark Anthony Chandler of Stoneville, Dr. John Riley Dabbs of Eden, and Lisa Dabbs of Atlanta.

The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Ray Funeral Home in Madison, and other times at her home.

Wendy Snead

PELHAM, N.C. - Wendy Lynn Crider Snead, 29, 66 Woodwind Drive, died Thursday, March 27, 1997, en route to Duke University Medical Center.

Born Jan. 29, 1968, in Greensboro, she was a daughter of Floyd Leslie Crider and Gloria Jean Lovelace Crider, who survive.

She spent most of her life in Pelham. She was a housewife and of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include a son, Journy Snead of Pelham; a brother, Steve Crider of Pelham; and a sister, Kelly Rigney of Ringgold, Va.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. John C. Gentry.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

Charles Branch

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Charles Raymond Branch, 64, of 306 S. Washington Ave., died March 29, 1997, at his home.

A native of Rockingham County, he was a son of William D. and Lula Cates Branch and had lived in Reidsville his entire life. He was a retired employee of Southern Die Casting.

He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Evans Branch of the residence; one son, C. Kenneth Branch of Danville; three daughters, June B. Smith and Patricia B. Smithey, both of Reidsville, and Kay Anderson of Alton, Va.; four brothers, Harley Branch, Granville Branch, Michael Branch, and William D. Branch Jr., all of Reidsville; one sister, Grace B. Dunleavy of Reidsville; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in Citty Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. C.A. "Sandy" Brown. Burial will be in Evergreen Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Sylvia Mims

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Sylvia Ann Mims, 49, of 341 Mims Farm Road, died Sunday, March 30, 1997, in Alamance Regional Medical Center, Burlington.

Born Aug. 25, 1947, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of John Elvin Mims and Virginia Odell Watlington Mims, who both survive.

She was a member of Graves Chapel Baptist Church and was employed as a secretary at Morehouse College in Atlanta.

Survivors include her parents of Reidsville; two sisters, Wylinder M. Love of Reidsville and Sharon M. James of Gibsonville; four brothers, Darnce E. Mims and Kenneth Windell Mims both of Reidsville; Talcot Lee Mims of Tega Cay, S.C., and Richard A. Mims of Newport News, Va.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Blackwell Baptist Church by the Rev. Everett Dickerson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body may be viewed at Fulton Funeral Home 3-8 p.m. Tuesday.

The family will be at the residence.

Fulton Funeral Home, Yanceyville, is in charge of arrangements.

Jesse Turner Sr.

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Jesse William Turner Sr., 66, 335 Mise Road, died Thursday, April 3, 1997, in the Brian Center, following several years of declining health.

Born in Caswell County, he was a son of Jesse C. and Nellie Aaron Turner.

He was married icon to Doris Ward Turner, who survives.

Prior to his retirement, he was owner and operator of Palmer's Meat Market in Danville, Va., for many years.

He was a member of Morotock Lodge No. 210 in Danville, the Scottish Rite and the Odd Fellows of Danville. He was a 32 degree Mason and a Shriner.

He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church.

He was a graduate of Cobb Memorial High School.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Janie T. Cobb of Yanceyville and Jill T. Ward of Mississippi; two sons, Jesse W. Turner Jr. of Semora and Joel G. Turner of Greensboro; and a sister, Ida Turner Waddell of Chester, Va.

He was predeceased by a grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Beulah Baptist Church by the Rev. Larry McCarty and the Rev. Joe Grubbs. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Hooper Funeral Home in Yanceyville.

Annie Griffin

MILTON, N.C. - Annie Snead Griffin, 78, 5983 Mountain Hill Road, died Friday, April 4, 1997, in Stratford Health Care Center, following a month of declining health.

Born Aug. 29, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was a daughter of John Edwin Snead and Cora Barker Snead.

On Dec. 2, 1933, she was married icon to Robert Snow Griffin, who died Aug. 6, 1986.

She spent her entire life in the Danville area, where she had owned and operated Cameo Beauty Salon for 37 years before retiring in 1995.

She was a member of Evangel Assembly of God Church, where she had served on the board and as a trustee for the church.

She was also a charter member of the Mountain Hill Ladies Auxiliary, where she was past president.

Survivors include two sons, Franklin Leon Griffin and Edward N. "Fuzzy" Griffin, both of Milton; two daughters, Raynell G. Horsley and Forresteen G. Bowling, both of Danville, Va.; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Robert S. "Dute" Griffin Jr., and eight brothers.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. William G. Mizelle. Burial will be in the Griffin family cemetery on Cedar Road in the Mountain Hill community.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of a daughter, Raynell G. Horsley, 3125 Finch Drive, Danville, in Blairmont Acres off U.S. 29 North.
