Annie Griffin

MILTON, N.C. - Annie Snead Griffin, 78, 5983 Mountain Hill Road, died Friday, April 4, 1997, in Stratford Health Care Center, following a month of declining health.

Born Aug. 29, 1918, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was a daughter of John Edwin Snead and Cora Barker Snead, who predeceased her.

On Dec. 2, 1933, she was married icon to Robert Snow Griffin, who died Aug. 6, 1986.

She spent her entire life in the Danville area, where she had owned and operated Cameo Beauty Salon for 37 years before retiring in 1995.

She was a member of Evangel Assembly of God Church, where she had served on the board and as a trustee for the church.

She was a charter member of the Mountain Hill Ladies Auxiliary, where she was past president.

Survivors include two sons, Franklin Leon Griffin and Edward N. "Fuzzy" Griffin, both of Milton; two daughters, Raynell G. Horsley and Forresteen G. Bowling, both of Danville, Va.; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Robert S. "Dute" Griffin Jr., and eight brothers.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, North Main Street chapel, by the Rev. William G. Mizelle. Burial will be in the Griffin family cemetery on Cedar Road in the Mountain Hill community.

The family will receive friends at the residence of a daughter, Raynell G. Horsley, 3125 Finch Drive, Danville, in Blairmont Acres off U.S. 29 North.

Ronnie Johnson

MILTON, N.C. - Ronnie E. Johnson, 46, of 1339 N.C. 57, died Thursday, April 3, 1997, at Duke University Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

Born Nov. 6, 1950, in Caswell County, he was a son of Jessie Johnson and Maxine Johnson.

He was educated in the Caswell County public schools and attended Danville Community College. He served in the U.S. Army for 17 years. He was assistant chaplain while in the Army.

He was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Semora.

In addition to his parents of the residence, survivors include two brothers, Leroy Johnson of Milton, and Calvin Johnson of the residence; three sisters, Gladys Garland and Ernestine Hamlett, both of Milton, and Mary Johnson of Greensboro.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today from the Mt. Olive Baptist Church by the Rev. Preston Medley. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Plenty Funeral Home in Semora is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Mason

LEXINGTON, N.C. - The Rev. Robert Jackson Mason, 68, of 2625 Yadkin College Road, died Thursday, April 3, 1997, at his residence.

Born June 13, 1928, in Ferrum, Va., he was the son of James O. Mason and Ola Ingram Mason.

He was first married icon to Jacqueline Aaron Mason, who precedeceased him. On Dec. 6, 1971, he was married icon to Elizabeth Greene.

He was a retired Independent Baptist minister. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served on the U.S. Compton during the Korean War.

A graduate of Danville Technical Institute, he completed further studies at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Ill., and Piedmont Bible College in Winston-Salem.

He was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church in Welcome.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by a son, Robert Wayne of Lexington; two sisters Ruby Craddock of Ferrum, Va., and Clara Dalton of Rocky Mount, Va.; two brothers, Irving Mason of Rocky Mount, Va., and Coy Mason of Martinsville, Va.; and two grandsons.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Lighthouse Baptist Church with Rev. Barry Surratt officiating. Burial will be in Yadkin College Cemetery, Davidson County, N.C.

The body will remain at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 3 to 5 p.m. and other times at the home.

Catherine Oakes

RUFFIN, N.C. - Catherine Mary Bowles Oakes, 71, of 130 Oakes Lane, died Saturday, April 5, 1997, at her residence. She had been declining in health for a year.

Born March 27, 1926, in Franklin County, Va., she was the daughter of Neal Bowles and Lucy Saunders Bowles, who predeceased her.

She had lived the last 10 years in Ruffin and prior to that had lived in Oklahoma and Martinsville, Va.

She was a member of Whitmell Christian Church, where she was a member of the choir and the Ladies Auxiliary.

On August 17, 1946, she was married icon to Andrew "Jack" Oakes, who survives.

Other survivors include four sons, Roger Oakes of Stockbridge, Ga., William Oakes of Martinsville, Timothy Oakes of Cambridge, Md., and John T. Oakes in the U.S. Air Force in Korea; three daughters, June O. Williams of St. Cloud, Fla., Rosanna O. Cohran of Lithia Springs, Ga., and Rita O. Adkins of Danville; one brother, Harold Bowles of Sykesville, Md.; and two sisters, Edna Collins of Callands and Ethel Amos of Martinsville; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by one brother, Thomas Bowles.

The family will receive friends at the residence. Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home, Westover chapel, is handling the arrangements, which were incomplete.

Melvin "Peg" Dodson

RUFFIN, N.C. - Melvin C. "Peg" Dodson, 86, 7195 NC 700, died Monday, April 7, 1997, in Morehead Memorial Hospital.

He was a native of Henry County, Va.

He was married icon to Clara Turner Dodson, who survives.

He was a retired cattleman and farmer.

He was a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church and the Men's Club.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by two sisters, Odessa Ward of Pelham and Macie Carter of Elkin.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday from Hickory Grove United Methodist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Reidsville, and other times at the residence.

Lewis Robertson

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Lewis Edward Robertson, 74, 730 Harrison Crossroad Loop, died Friday, April 11, 1997, in Duke University Medical Center.

He was a native of Rockingham County.

He was married icon to Lucille Turman Robertson, who survives.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by American Tobacco Co. for 39 years. He was also a farmer and of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Linda Robertson and David C. Smith Jr., and a grandson, Douglas Edward Smith, all of Reidsville; two brothers, Fred E. Robertson of Collinsville, Va., and Carroll Robertson of Danville, Va.; three sisters, Jenera R. Marlowe and Madge R. Adkins, both of Callands, Va., and Nancy R. Burnette of Richmond; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, Marion R. Martin.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel in Reidsville. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park in Danville, Va.

The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Eva Shorter

EDEN, N.C. - Eva Key Hanks Shorter, 96, 1608 East Ridge Ave., died Thursday, April 10, 1997, in Morehead Memorial Hospital.

She was a native of Surry County.

She was a homemaker and a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Chester M. Hanks of Piney Flats, Tenn.; two daughters, Vera Hazelwood of Danville, Va., and Eria Murphy of Eden; two sisters, Maude Carter of St. Lawrence, S.D., and Carrie Caudle of Emittsburg, Md.; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Solid Rock Baptist Church. Burial will be in Danview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Fair Funeral Home in Eden, and other times at the residence.

Monroe Morris

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - The funeral for Monroe Noly Morris, 82, formerly of Danville, will be conducted 7 tonight from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by Bishop William T. Collins Jr. Interment will be held 10 a.m. Thursday in Highland Burial Park.

He died Sunday, Dec. 29, 1996, in his residence.

Born Oct. 30, 1914, in Paces, Va., he was a son of Jessie Wister Morris and Lessie March Ashby Morris.

He was married icon to Myrtle Rowland Morris, who survives.

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Dan River Inc. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Isabelle Johnson of Jacksonville; a son, David Morris of Franklin, Pa.; two sisters, Estelle Bayes of Danville, Va., and Florence Smith of Westminster, Md.; a brother, Hugh Morris of Lincoln, Neb.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends 6-6:45 tonight at the funeral home.

James 'Mike' Eastwood

EDEN, N.C. - James Michael "Mike" Eastwood, 26, of 319 Greenwood St., Eden, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

A native of Eden, he was a driver for R.P.S., and a professional motocross racer with the American Motocross Association.

He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.

Survivors include his parents, Jean and James Eastwood of Eden; two sisters, Mildred Hatcher of Goldsboro, and Myra Craddock of Eden; a step-grandmother, Mary Holt, and a step-great grandmother, Lelia Holt, both of Eden.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Liberty Baptist Church. Burial will be in Overlook Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7 to 9 tonight at Fair Funeral Home, Eden, and other times will be at the residence.
