Dexter Hancock

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Funeral services for Dexter William Hancock, 84, Pine Hill Rest Home, 1196 Hodges Dairy Road, will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Wayne Wallace. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

He died Monday afternoon, Dec. 29, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 28, 1913, in Halifax, Va., he was the son of William Hancock and Maude Vaughn Hancock.

A resident of Danville, Va., for most of his life, he worked for Dan River Inc., before retiring. He was a member of State Line Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Dexter William Hancock Jr. and Troy Glenwood Hancock, both of Pelham; four daughters, Carol Hancock Mims, Nancy Hancock Goodman and Linda Sue Hancock, all of Pelham, and Dorothy Hancock Mitchell of Danville; 22 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his daughter, Linda Hancock, 971 Arch Cook Road, Pelham, off of Holland Road.

Linzy Bowe

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Linzy Thomas Bowe, 282 Wall St., died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at Annie Penn Memorial Hospital, Reidsville.

Born Sept. 9, 1904, in Caswell County, he was the son of William and Bettie Graves Bowe.

He was married icon to Minnie Gertude Bolden Bowe, who survives.

He was a member of Pearson Chapel A.M.E. Church and Allens Chapel Masonic Lodge 676.

He was a retired employee of Caswell Motor Company after more than 60 years of service.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by his sister, Isabella B. Williamson of Yanceyville.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Pearson Chapel A.M.E. Church by the Rev. George Turner. Burial will be in Camp Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-7:30 tonight at Fulton Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

Inez Holloway

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Inez Holloway, 72, of 833 Purley Church Road, died Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, at the Brian Center.

Born March 25, 1925, in Caswell County, N.C., she was a daughter of Americus Holloway and Lucy Henderson Holloway.

She was a DCC employee prior to her retirement.

She was a member of Sassafras Grove Baptist Church. She was the past worthy matron of the Estelle Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 647 in Milton.

Survivors include three sisters, Janie McIver of Fayetteville, N.C., Lethaniel Gwynn and Clevie Holloway, both of Yanceyville.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Sassafras Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Carl Bigelow. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body may be viewed from 4-8 p.m. today at Fulton Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence, 833 Purley Church Road.

James Briggs

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - James Bernell Briggs, 62, 25 Pleasant Grove Church Road, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at his residence.

Born Sept. 13, 1935, in Caswell County, he was a son of Oscar Thurman Briggs and Annie Rivers Love Briggs.

He was retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, in Danville, Va.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a member of Union United Methodist Church.

He loved Carolina basketball and country music.

He was predeceased by a sister, Clara Briggs Niemann and a brother, Claxton Briggs.

Survivors include a daughter, Amanda Briggs of Chapel Hill; two sisters, Shirley B. Solomon of Leasburg and Ruth B. Kimbro of Martinsville, Va.,; and a brother, O. Hulon Briggs of Graham.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Union United Methodist Church by Minister Bently Creighton. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Following the service the family will receive friends at the church.

The family of James Bernell Briggs request donations be made to Union United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o S.T. Richmond, 4455 N.C. Hwy. 119 North, Leasburg, N.C. 27291.

Marley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Baby Means

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Dakota Wayne Means, infant son of David Wayne Means Jr. and Carlene Mullins Means, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.

In addition to his parents of the residence, 54 Badgett Sisters Parkway, survivors include his maternal grandparents, Carl Edward Mullins and Jerlene Blankenship Mullins of Yanceyville; and his paternal grandparents, David Wayne Means Sr. and Sue Means of Greensboro.

A graveside service was conducted 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, at Oakview Presbyterian Church Cemetery by Elder Carl Mullins.

Marley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lethia Frederick

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Lethia Herring Washington Frederick, of Shomaria Family Care Home, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center in Danville, Va.

Born Oct. 13, 1913, in Burgaw, she was the daughter of Arthur and Annie Walker Herring.

She was a member of Yanceyville Missionary Baptist Church and was a retired postal clerk for the U.S. Post Office in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Survivors include a daughter, Gloria W. Wallace of Yanceyville; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A Service of Remembrance will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Yanceyville Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Melvin Paylor. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Watha also by the Rev. Melvin Paylor.

Burial will be in the Herring Family Cemetery in Watha.

The body may be viewed from 4-8 p.m. today at Fulton Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Gloria W. Wallace, 1107 County Home Road.

Nellie Gosney

PELHAM, N.C. - Nellie May Goolsby Gosney, 3065 Old U.S. Hwy. 29, Lot 12, died Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 7, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a month of declining health.

She was born in Madison, N.C.

She was married icon to Julian Gosney, who predeceased her.

A resident of Danville, Va., and Pelham for most of her life, she was a homemaker and a member of True Gospel Baptist Church.

Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Danville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Hubert Inman.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edna Peek

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Edna Irene Dodson Peek, 89, 327 Shady Grove Road, formerly of 101 Charlotte Ave. in Westover Hills, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 7, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after nine years of declining health and a week in the hospital.

Born May 8, 1908, in Fries, Va., she was the daughter of William Dodson and Mary Littreal Dodson.

In 1939, she was married icon to Claude C. Peek, who died in 1955.

A resident of the Westover Hills community, she worked in the drawing room at Dan River, Inc., for 25 years. She later worked in the cafeteria at Coates School for a number of years.

She was a life long member of Schoolfield United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Peek Mitchell of Providence.

Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Mountain View Cemetery by the Rev. M. Dana Hunt.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence, 327 Shady Grove Road in the Gatewood community.

Arthur Womack

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Arthur Lee Womack, 67, 115 North Washington Ave., died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.

Born Aug. 25, 1930, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was a son of Benjamin Womack and Carrie Jones Womack.

He was married icon to Barbara Gibson, who predeceased him.

He worked for Bassett Furniture Company for many years.

Survivors include three sons, Arthur Lee Womack Jr. of Oxon Hill, Md., and Carlos Womack of Danville, Va., and Raymond Womack of Alamo, Ga.; a daughter, Patricia Terry of Reidsville; a brother, Robert Womack of Capital Heights, Md.; and a host of grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Fisher & Watkins Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his granddaughter, Renee Carter, 633 Franklin St.

Merian Dodson

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Merian Anderson Dodson, 77, of 9987 Hwy 86 North, died Saturday morning, Jan. 10, 1998, at his residence after a decline in health since May 1997.

Born March 31, 1920 in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was a son of Charles Henry Dodson and Mary Maggie Johnson Dodson.

He had lived in Caswell County since 1940, where he worked as a prison guard for Caswell and Guilford County for 20 years. He retired at age 65.

He was a former member of Southall Baptist Church and a charter member of Westover Baptist Church.

On Oct. 2, 1943, he married icon Edna Clayton Dodson, who survives.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Doris Dodson Lewis of Providence, Jean Dodson Moss and Liz Dodson Gregory, both of Danville, Va.; a son, James Anderson Dodson of Providence; two sisters, Louise Clayton of Danville and Lucy Dunn of Richmond; eight grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by five brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from the Chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Dr. Doug Barber and the Rev. Robert Vermillion. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at Swicegood Funeral Home 7 to 8:30 tonight and at other times at the residence.

Gary Nunnalley Jr.

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Gary Nunnalley Jr., 54, of 650 Long Road, died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, in the V.A. Hospital in Durham, N.C.

Born Nov. 23, 1943 in Portsmouth, he was the son of Gary Nunnalley Sr. and Lucy Thorpe Nunnalley.

He was a member of Red Hill Baptist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the American Legion Post #210.

Survivors include his wife, Rosa Long Nunnalley of the residence; a daughter, Elizabeth Nunnalley Fuller of Reidsville; a brother, Thomas W. Nunnalley of Greensboro; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Red Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Gregory Hopkins. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at Fulton Funeral Home 7 to 8 p.m. today and other times at the residence.
