John Etchison Jr.

EDEN, N.C. - John Frank Etchison Jr., 73, of 417 Moir St., died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at his residence.

A native of Advance, he retired from the military and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked as a construction superintendent and attended Osborne Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marie McFarling Etchison.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Etchison of Groom, Texas; three daughters, Sherry Baker and Lori Sawyers, both of Eden, and Jamie Tackett of Ripley, Ok.; two sons, Terry Etchison of Mina, Ark., and Larry Etchison of Pampa, Texas; stepchildren J'Linna Finck and Justin Harris, both of Texas, Jay Harris of Arkansas; two sisters, Shirley Absher of Pleasant Garden and Betty Horn of Greensboro; three brothers, Glenn Etchison and Jim Etchison, both of Greensboro, and George Etchison of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; 18 grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday from the chapel of Reynolds Funeral Home with burial in the McFarling family cemetery in Yanceyville. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard of Danville.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Monday and at other times at the residence.

Annie Knowles

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Annie Bell Williams Knowles, 87, 3267 Grooms Road, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 20, 1998, at Annie Penn Hospital.

A native of Rockingham County, she was a homemaker and of the Primitive Baptist faith.

She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred Joe Knowles; her son, Ernest Knowles; and her daughter, Brenda Knowles Paynter.

Survivors include a son, Brison Knowles and his wife, Carol, of Reidsville; three daughters, Audrey Knowles Allen and husband, Joe, of Reidsville, Cora Knowles Lewis and husband, John, of Danville, Va., and Betty Knowles Dickerson and husband, David, also of Reidsville; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a special caretaker, Sarah Cox.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in New Hope Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Verna Rowland

BLANCH, N.C. - A graveside service for Verna Cooper Rowland, 78, 609 Blanch Road, will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Purley United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Dr. Floyd Morrow.

She died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at her residence following a decline in health since 1996.

Born Nov. 29, 1919, in Franklin County, she was a daughter of Ord Cooper and Della Mae Rigney Cooper.

On May 29, 1937, she was married icon to Edward M. Rowland Jr., who died Feb. 1, 1997.

Mrs. Rowland lived in Sago, Va., until moving to Caswell County in 1935.

She retired from Cole Chevrolet-Olds in Yanceyville in 1982, where she had worked as office manager for 20 years.

Mrs. Rowland was a member of Purley United Methodist Church, where she had served as a Sunday school teacher, treasurer, a lay delegate to the Annual Methodist Conference and other administrative offices.

She was a member of Caswell Chapter No. 239 of the Order of the Eastern Star and Caswell County Extension Homemakers.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth A. Rowland of Blanch; two brothers, Garnett Cooper of Yanceyville and Samuel F. Cooper of Milton; two sisters, Thalia Bradley of Orlando, Fla., and Jane Walker of Reidsville; a grandson, Jon Stuart Rowland of Salt Lake City; and two step-grandchildren, Lane Bailey of Tryon and Chris Bailey of Dillsboro.

She was also predeceased by two brothers, Cecil W. Cooper and Daniel O. Cooper; and three sisters, Letha Cooper, Essie Belcher and Thelma Foster.

The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall, and other times at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of Alamance & Caswell County, P.O. Box 2122, Burlington, N.C. 27216, or the charity of your choice.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Beatrice Slade

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Beatrice Stokes Slade, 3911 Hwy. 158 W., died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998, in Norwalk, Conn.

Born June 1, 1923, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of Robert Buloh Stokes and Carrie Hodnett Stokes.

She was married icon to James Robert Slade, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Sassafras Grove Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

Survivors include two daughters, Carrie S. Clark and Willie Mae Slade, both of Norwalk, Conn.; a son, James R. Slade Jr. of Yanceyville; three sisters, Earlene S. Jones and Lucy Turner Long, both of Danville, Va., and Mary S. Turner of Yanceyville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Sassafras Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Carl Bigelow. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body may be viewed from 2 to 8 tonight at Fulton Funeral Home.

The family is at the residence.

Carrie Stokes

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Carrie Hodnett Stokes, 3911 Hwy 158 W., died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, at her residence.

Born June 17, 1906, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Johnny and Anna Graves Hodnett.

She was married icon to Buloh Stokes, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Sassafras Grove Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

Survivors include three daughters, Earlene S. Jones and Lucy S. Turner Long, both of Danville, Va., and Mary S. Turner of Yanceyville; three brothers, Matthew Williams of Yanceyville and Charlie Hodnett and Walter Hodnett, both of Danville, Va.; and 49 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Sassafras Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Carl Bigelow. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body may be viewed from 2 to 8 tonight at Fulton Funeral Home.

The family will be at the residence.

Wiley 'Flukly' Lunsford

ROXBORO, N.C. - Wiley Ray "Flukly" Lunsford, 51, 100 Edgemont Ave., died Thursday evening, Jan. 22, 1998, at N.C. Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.

A native of Person County, he was a son of Wiley O. Lunsford and Lillian Oakley Lunsford, who survives.

He was married icon to Sandra Long Lunsford, who also survives.

He was a member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church, N.C. Bow Hunters Association and Gooch's Mill Archery Club.

He was a retired golf course construction employee.

In addition to his wife of the residence and mother of Rougemont, survivors include a daughter, Sheryl L. Walker of Rougemont; a stepdaughter, Lisa Hicks of Roxboro; a stepson, Kerry Davis of Danville, Va.; a sister, Sally L. Bowling of Rougemont; a brother, Sherwood "Snooks" Lunsford of Rougemont; and three step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Strickland Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Randy Pittman. Burial will be in Mt. Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

'Bud' Carrington

HICKORY, N.C. - Alfred Randolph "Bud" Carrington, 74, died Nov. 19, 1997, in Frye Regional Medical Center after a decline in health.

Born Jan. 16, 1923, in Lynchburg, Va., he was a son of A. Randolph Carrington and Gladys Watkins Carrington.

He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension and was retired from safety transportation management. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, having served in World War II. He graduated from the University of Virginia.

He was married icon to Faye M. Carrington.

Survivors include a son, Alfred R. Carrington IV of Hudson; a daughter, Kent Carrington Dunford of Kingsport, Tenn.; a brother, John W. Carrington of Lynchburg; a sister, Jean C. Little of Greenville, S.C.; and five grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Nov. 21 by the Rev. Laurie McAlpine.

Kenneth Gunnell

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Kenneth Gunnell, 67, of 2148 Chandler Mill Road, Pelham, died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, in Danville, Va., Regional Medical Center.

A Pittsylvania County native, he was a retired plumber and of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include four daughters, Barbara G. Dildy and her husband Carl of Houston, Texas, Joyce G. Saunders of Raleigh, Brenda Howard of Chesapeake, Va., and Deborah Crosby of Kill Devil Hills; three sons, Tommy Lee Gunnell and his wife Traci of Pelham, Johnny Gunnell of Eure, and Brenner Harris of Ruffin; five sisters, Florine Johnson of Brookneal, Va., Ruby Trollinger of Haw River, Viola Carter of Danville, Va., Doris Shively of Chatham, Va., and Helen Powell of Dry Fork, Va.; three grandchildren, Tommy Lee, Cody and Gregg; 10 other grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 39 years, Virginia C. Gunnell, and two sisters and five brothers.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Lively Stone Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 4-6 p.m. today at Wilkerson Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Pauline Jones

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Pauline Jones Jones, 80, of 908 Walters St., died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, in Annie Penn Memorial Hospital.

A native of Caswell County, she was the daughter of Paul H. Jones and Lemma Fowlkes Jones.

She lived in Reidsville most of her life. She was a member of Greenwood Presbyterian Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher and was a retired employee of Burlington Industries.

Her husband, John M. Jones, died in 1983.

Survivors include one daughter, Carol S. Jones of Reidsville; a son, Ronald E. Jones of Reidsville; two brothers, William J. Jones of Pelham and Dr. Houston G. Jones of Chapel Hill; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Greenwood Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Victor Scott and the Rev. Morton Kurtz with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Citty Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence.
