Gladys Adkins

PELHAM, N.C. - Gladys Evans Adkins, 71, 2517 Old 29 South, died Monday morning, Feb. 2, 1998, at her residence after a ten years of declining health.

Born April 25, 1926, in Halifax County, Va., she was a daughter of George Dewey Evans and Mary Elizabeth Evans Evans.

On Dec. 18, 1943, she was married icon to Samuel Wesley Adkins, who survives.

For 70 years, she had lived in the Pelham community, where she was a homemaker and a charter member of Sheldon Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Brenda Adkins Hoskins of Pelham; three sons, George S. Adkins and Aaron D. Adkins, both of Pelham, and Jimmy D. Adkins of California; four sisters, Vera E. Land and Nancy E. Lane, both of Pelham, Edna E. Trammell of Gretna, Va., and Patsy E. Booth of Danville, Va.; five brothers, the Rev. Hubert Evans of Pelham, Edward Evans of Ruffin, Sam "Mike" Evans of Providence, Carl Evans of Greensboro and Kenneth Evans of Danville; seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, Nathan Evans.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Sheldon Baptist Church by the Rev. Kenneth Hall, the Rev. Wayne Wallace and the Rev. Daniel Lackey. Burial will be in Schoolfield Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church, and other times at the residence, 2517 Old 29 South.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

David Robertson Jr.

EDEN, N.C. - David Greene Robertson Jr., 76, 14470 Hwy. 87 North, died Saturday evening, Jan. 31, 1998, at his residence.

A native of Rockingham County, he was retired from American Tobacco Co.

Survivors include three sons, David Gary Robertson of Reidsville and Jody Brian Robertson and Joey Brey Robertson, both of Eden; four daughters, Nancy Ratliff of Stoneville and Linda Taylor, Billie Walker and Jenny Evans, all of Eden; six sisters, Ethel Hudson of Reidsville, Polly Burnette of Greensboro, Molly Musicant of Arizona, Cindy Puckett of Madison, Rennie Hayes of Danville, Va., and Janie Caudle of Elkin; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by his wife, Velma Robertson.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

Charlie Lumpkins

PELHAM, N.C. - A memorial service for Charlie Herman Lumpkins, 75, 9732 N.C. 700, will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Loy Kennedy with military honors performed by American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard.

He died Tuesday morning, Feb. 3, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a year of declining health.

Born April 3, 1922, in Rockingham County, he was a son of Charlie Archer Lumpkins and Lillie Pearman Lumpkins.

He was married icon to the former Effie Epps, who died Oct. 20, 1997.

A resident of Mayfield community for most of his life, he was formerly employed by Dan River, Inc., and he also farmed.

He was a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include a son, Danny H. Lumpkins of Macon, Ga.; a daughter, Linda Lumpkins Crowder of the Mayfield community; a sister, Burnell Holley of Danville, Va.; and three grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Dexter Lee Lumpkins; and a brother, John Daniel Lumpkins.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of his daughter, Linda Lumpkins Crowder, 9720 N.C. 700, Pelham.

Samuel Adkins

PELHAM, N.C. - Samuel Wesley Adkins, 74, 2517 Old 29 South, died early Friday morning, Feb. 6, 1998, at his residence.

Born March 20, 1923, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Aron Wesley Adkins and Lillie Crews Adkins.

Mr. Adkins was predeceased by his wife, Gladys Loraine Evans Adkins, who died Feb. 2, 1998.

He was also predeceased by four sisters and four brothers.

Mr. Adkins had spent most of his life in the Pelham community, where he was a charter member of Sheldon Baptist Church.

He had worked for Dan River, Inc., and also was a farmer.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda A. Hoskins and Thomas Lee Hoskins of Pelham; three sons and daughters-in-law, George S. Adkins and Emma Adkins, and Aaron D. Adkins and Bonnie Adkins, all of Pelham, and Jimmy D. Adkins and Ginny Adkins of California; two brothers, Claude Adkins and Otis Adkins, both of Pelham; seven grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Sheldon Baptist Church by the Rev. Kenneth Hall, the Rev. Wayne Wallace and the Rev. Daniel Lackey. Burial will be in Schoolfield Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 Saturday evening at the church, and other times at the residence.

Allen Hodges

EDEN, N.C. - Allen Gwynn Hodges, 44, 837 Moir Mill Road, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at his residence.

The son of Robert and Edith McKinney Hodges, he was born in Caswell County.

He was of Baptist Faith and was a construction worker.

He is survived by a son, William Allen Hodges of Yanceyville; a sister, Jeannie Barham of Eden; five brothers, Roger Hodges of Eden, Lee Hodges of Danville, Va., Alton Hodges and James Hodges, both of Ruffin, and Timothy Hodges of Reidsville; and a step-son, Rodney Stephen Orr of Yanceyville.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Wade Kirby Hodges; and two half-brothers, William T. Hodges and Robert N. "Pop Eye" Hodges.

Memorial services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hooper Funeral Home in Yanceyville by the Rev. Frank Bowers.

The family will receive friends and relatives 7 to 8:30 tonight at Hooper Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of a son, William Allen Hodges, 2341 U.S. Highway 158 East and at the home of the sister, Jeannie Barham, 817 Moir Mill Road, Eden.

Tommie Lee Bowe

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Tommie Lee Bowe, 54, of Fuquay Road, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998.

Born Jan. 12, 1944, in Caswell County, he was a son of Lillie Bell Hensley Bowe and Harry Bowe, who survives.

He was a member of Power in the Word Ministry, where he served as deacon, usher and parking lot attendant.

He was a teammate of Caswell Sportsman Club, Bartlett-Yancey Buccaneer Club and the A-Team Baseball Team with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Danville, Va.

In addition to his father of Yanceyville, survivors include his wife, Edith Withers Bowe of the residence; three sons, Tommy "JoJo" Bowe of Yanceyville, Alexander F. Hightower of Norfolk, Va., and Jessie Bernard King of New York; three daughters, Penny Bowe of Brown Summit, Alicia E. Hightower of Yanceyville and Donnarita H. Dixon of Greensboro; two brothers, James Clifton Bowe of Yanceyville and Harry Bowe Jr. of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Patricia Ann McDaniel of Norfolk, Va.; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Power in the Word Ministry Church in Burlinton, N.C. Burial will be at the Pearson Chapel AME Church cemetery in Yanceyville, N.C. with the Rev. Perry Tankard officiating. The body may be viewed from 2-8 p.m. today at Fulton Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence, 285 Fuquay Road.

Carlton Chandler

BLANCH, N.C. - Gilbert Carlton Chandler, 72, 203 Chandler Road, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at his residence after several months of rapidly declining health.

Born April 1, 1925, in Caswell County, he was a son of Clyde Thomas and Linnie Myers Chandler.

He was married icon to Ruby Lea Shelton Chandler, who survives.

He was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church serving as Sunday school secretary for more than 40 years.

He was secretary and treasurer for board of directors Caswell County Farm Bureau and also served as a magistrate for Caswell County.

He was a charter member of Central Caswell Ruritan Club and was voted Ruritan of the year in 1990.

He was a former member of Caswell County ASCS Board.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Germany during World War II.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Suzanne C. Yarbrough of Blanch; a son, Bill Chandler of Apex; a brother, Alvis Chandler of Blanch; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Prospect United Methodist Church by Dr. Stanley Hare and the Rev. George Johnson. Burial will be in church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Hooper Funeral Home, Yanceyville, and other times at the residence.

Claudia Powell

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Claudia Ashworth Powell, 95, 1104 Larkwood Drive, formerly of 1274 Perkinson Road, Ruffin, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at Annie Penn Memorial Hospital.

A native of Brosville, Va., she was the daughter of Wiley and Jettie Lipford Ashworth.

She was married icon to Onnie W. Powell, who predeceased her.

A resident of the Happy Home community of Rockingham County for most of her life, she was a homemaker and a former salesperson with J.C. Penney Co.

She was a member of Happy Home United Church of Christ.

Survivors include a son, Herman Powell of Ruffin; three daughters, Velma P. Chrismon of Brown Summit, Linda P. Schofield of Charleston, S.C., and Opal P. Keen of Reidsville; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sons, Norman Powell and Arnold "Johnny" Powell.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Happy Home United Church of Christ by the Rev. Rosser Clapp and the Rev. George Liebmann. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Citty Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Opal Keen, 1104 Larkwood Drive.

Elbert Green

RUFFIN, N.C. - Elbert Lee Green, 58, 1713 Worsham Mill Road, died Wednesday evening, Feb. 11, 1998, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.

A native of Virginia, he was married icon to Barbara Wilson Green, who survives.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Eden.

He was a former waste man for Fieldcrest Mills.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include six daughters, Alice Murphy, Nora Green, Mary Green and Judy Green, all of Eden; Laura Keatts of Reidsville and Nancy Green of Ruffin; a stepson, Bobby Kirks of Danville, Va.; a stepdaughter, Talissa Pruitt of Eden; a sister, Lottie Belle Green of Ruffin; and six grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Fair Funeral Home Chapel, Eden. Burial will be in the Green Family Cemetery in Broswell, Va.

The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at the funeral, and other times at the residence.
