Phillip Tickle

BURLINGTON, N.C. - Phillip Michael Tickle, 24, 1110 West Webb Ave., died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, at the University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill, after a week of illness.

Born in Alamance County, he was the son of David Michael Tickle and Teresa Jones Tickle, who survive.

He was a supervisor of B.D.S. Patient Services at Lab Corp in Burlington.

He was a member of West Burlington Methodist Church.

He graduated in 1991 from Williams High School and was a Dean's List student at the UNCG transfer program through the Alamance Community College.

In addition to his parents, both of Burlington, survivors include a sister, Robin Sunshine "Sunni" Tickle of Burlington; and his maternal grandparents, Leroy Clack and Nellie Jones Clack of Danville, Va.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Aubrey "Pete" Jones Sr.; his paternal grandfather, Norman Tickle; and his paternal grandmother, Edith Small Tickle.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel, Burlington, by the Dr. Leroy Clack, pastor of Vandola Baptist Church in Danville, Va.

Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends 6-9 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of his mother, 411 Laurel Hill Drive and also at the residence of his father, 3117 Commerce Place, Apt. G.

Susannah Snipes

PELHAM, N.C. - Susannah Reeves Snipes, 69, 10655 Hwy. 700, died Wednesday night, Feb. 11, at Annie Penn Memorial Hospital in Reidsville.

She was born in Kershaw, S.C.

She was the owner of Susie's Ceramic Shop.

Survivors include her husband, Gussie Lee Snipes of Pelham; two daughters, Eva Mae Smith and Brenda Pruitt, both of Pelham; a son, Bobby Snipes of Danville; two sisters, Inez Jones of Lancaster, S.C., and Betty Hough of Kershaw, S.C.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Bill Lee Snipes; and a brother, Bill Reeves.

Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. today in Lively Stone Baptist Church Cemetery in Pelham.

Fair Funeral Home, Eden, is in charge of arrangements.

C. Catherine Church

EDEN, N.C. - C. Catherine Cheshire Church, 90, 230 E. Harris Place, died Monday morning, Feb. 16, 1998, at Morehead Memorial Hospital.

A native of Spray, she was a homemaker.

She was married icon to the Rev. Major Church, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Church of God of Prophecy.

Survivors include four daughters, Jean Powell, Dorothy Durham, Charlotte McDaniel and Wanda Meeks, all of Eden; three half-brothers, Garnold Cheshire and J.D. Cheshire, both of Eden, and Junior Cheshire of Asheboro; two half-sisters, Lillie Hopkins and Rebecca Tumlinson, both of Eden; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Peggy Church Fuller; and a son, Curtis Church.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Church of God of Prophecy, Eden. Burial will be in Ridgeview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Fair Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Charlotte McDaniel, 1144 Front St., Eden.

Lester Lewis

MATTHEWS, N.C. - Lester Lewis, 77, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at Presbyterian Hospital in Matthews.

Born Dec. 4, 1920, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of Jesse B. Lewis and Fannie Yeates Lewis.

He was married icon to Beulah Henderson Lewis, who survives.

He was a member of Lamplight Church, past post commander of VFW 97 in Danville and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was a retired salesman for Republic Steel Co.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Jim Lewis of Charlotte; two daughters, Marie Rogers of Matthews and Donna Penny of Richlands; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. today at Almond, Raymer & McConnell Funeral Home Chapel in Huntersville by the Rev. Jim Hall. Graveside services will be conducted 3 p.m. today in Highland Burial Park in Danville, Va.

Lester Payne

DURHAM, N.C. - Lester Swanson Payne, 80, 4716 Renfrew Drive, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at his residence after several months of declining health.

Born April 28, 1917, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of George Payne and Mazie Boaze Payne.

For 58 years, he was married icon to Frances Townsend Payne, who survives.

He had lived in Pittsylvania County, where he farmed for many years and worked for Dan River, Inc., before moving to Durham in 1953, where he was a long time employee of Erwin (Burlington Industries) until his retirement.

He was a member of Graystone Baptist Church.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three sons, Herbert L. Payne and Rodney G. Payne, both of Jacksonville, Fla., and Howard C. Payne of Durham, N.C.; a daughter, Judy P. Knott of Timberlake, N.C.; two sisters, Ruth P. Zimmerman and Ella Mae P. Haas, both of Danville; 10 grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by four brothers, three sisters and a granddaughter.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Rev. Jack Cox. Burial will be in the Boaze Family Cemetery on Route 41 with military honors by American Legion Post 325.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Virginia Eason

PELHAM, N.C. - Virginia Myrtle Wyatt Eason, 91, of the Brian Center in Yanceyville, formerly of Pelham, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 18, 1998, at the center.

A native of Pittsylvania County, Va., she was retired from Dan River Mills as a weaver.

She was a member of True Gospel Baptist Church in Pelham.

She is survived by four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Robert Mustain; and a daughter, Gloria Horton.

A graveside service will be conducted Saturday morning in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her granddaughter, 556 Stephens Road in Providence.

Wilkerson Funeral Home, Reidsville, is in charge of arrangements.

Jason Barnard

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Funeral services for Jason Lee Barnard, 24, will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at West End Christian Church by the Rev. June H. Hughes. Burial will be in Oak Grove Christian Church Cemetery in Chatham, Va.

He died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem.

Born May 9, 1973, in Danville, Va., he was a son of Sterling Diggs Barnard and Ruth Craddock Barnard, who survive.

He was a member of West End Christian Church.

He graduated from Chatham High School and attended Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. He also attended A & T State University in Winston-Salem.

He was employed by the Custom Car Hi Fi in Winston Salem.

In addition to his mother and father of Chatham, Va., survivors include a brother, John S. Barnard of Portsmouth, Va.; his grandmother, Rachel D. Craddock of Chatham; and his grandfather, Jude T. Craddock of Chatham.

The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Scott Funeral Home in Chatham, Va., and other times at the residence of 1157 Hawkins Road, Chatham, Va.

Ruby Powers

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Ruby Moss Powers, 80, 2366 Walters Mill Road, died Thursday afternoon, March 19, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health since May 1997.

Born March 20, 1917, in Rockingham County, she was the daughter of John Robert Moss and Lula Smith Moss.

She was married icon to Thomas S. Bledsoe of Danville. She was later married icon to Leslie Powers, who died in 1976.

A resident of the Mountain Hill community for most of her life, she had lived in Providence for the past 21 years.

For 35 years, she worked as a nurse.

She was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.

Survivors include a son, Tommie "Pee Wee" Bledsoe of Providence; a daughter, Marie "Sis" Gibson of the Mountain Hill community; two brothers, Charlie Moss of Portsmouth, Va., and John Moss of Martinsville, Va.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was also predeceased by two sons, John W. Bledsoe and Harvey Neal Bledsoe.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Betsy Briscoe

SUNBURY, N.C. - Betsy Riddick Briscoe, 64, of Orchard Street, died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City.

Born in Gates County, she was the daughter of S. Eugene and Pallye Beamon Riddick.

She was married icon to Alton R. Briscoe, Sr., who predeceased her.

She was a retired nurse and had also retired from College of the Albemarle as an instructor in the nursing program.

She was a member of Damascus Christian Church and had formerly served as pianist at Oak Grove Christian Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan W. Davis of Lenoir; a son, Robie W. White of Sunbury; a stepson, Alton Robert Briscoe Jr. of El Paso, Texas; a brother, Sam E. Riddick Jr. of Blanch; three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday in Parker's United Methodist Church Cemetery, Corapeake, by the Rev. Riddick Pearce and the Rev. Ron Parr.

The family will be at the residence.

Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge of arrangements.
