Dorothy James
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Dorothy Moore James, 71, 5774 North Carolina Hwy. 86 North, died Tuesday, March 10, 1998, in the Brian Center Nursing Care.
Born April 19, 1926, in Yanceyville, she was a daughter of John Moore and Mary Turner Moore.
She was married
to Harold L. James Sr., who survives.
She was employed as a beautician at the Modern Beauty Shop. She was also a a member of Blackwell Baptist Church in Yanceyville and the usher board, and served as a den mother for the Cub Scouts.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include three sons, Harold L. James Jr. of Pelham, Michael Lafayette James and Ronald Konrad James, both of Yanceyville; four sisters, Louise Brandon of Springfield, Mass., Barbara D. Moore of Yanceyville, Mabel Macklin of Hartford, Conn., and Kaye Ervin of Greensboro; three brothers, Lorenza Moore and Willie P. Moore, both of Yanceyville, and Robert Moore of Greensboro; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday from Blackwell Baptist Church by the Rev. Everett Dickerson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Ruby Clark
MATTHEWS, N.C. - Ruby Perry Clark, 85, 600 Fullwood Lane, Carrington Place Nursing Home, died Wednesday, March 11, 1998, at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, after a decline in health for a number of years.
Born July 19, 1912, in Eden, she was the daughter of William Noie Perry and Estelle Kapps Perry.
She spent most of her life in the Danville area where she was a homemaker. She was of the Protestant faith.
She was married
to Amon Leslie Clark on Oct. 25, 1930.
In addition to her husband, who died Sept. 11, 1990, immediate family members who preceded her in death include two brothers, Homer G. Perry and Jesse D. Perry; and three sisters, Mattie Hubbard, Nell Sue Hughes and Ila Mae Carter.
Survivors include a son, Jerry E. Clark of Matthews; two brothers, William N. Perry Jr. and Dennis Elwood Perry, both of Danville; two grandchildren; and five great=granchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later time.
Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is in charge of local arrangements.
Nancy Travis
PELHAM, N.C. - A funeral for Nancy Cook Travis, 65, of 245 Pruitt Road, will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at Sheldon Baptist Church by the Rev. Kenneth Hall. Burial will follow at Schoolfield Cemetery.
She died Thursday, March 12, at Vencor Hospital in Greensboro following 10 years of declining health.
Born Dec. 6, 1932, in Danville, Va., she was a daughter of Willie Cook and Lou Fannie Durham Cook.
She was married
to Jack Norman Travis.
She spent most of her life in the Danville area and had lived in Pelham for the past nine years after moving from Danville. She was an inspector for Durham Hosiery Mills Inc. before retiring, and was a member of Sheldon Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Norman Lee Travis of the residence and Edward Arnold Travis of Danville; one daughter, Barbara Travis Reid of Danville; three brothers, Edgar Cook of Danville, Va., Houston Cook of Ruffin, and Thomas Wayne Cook of Pelham; two sisters, Stella Harold of Washington, and Hazel Pruitt of Pelham; and five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Swicegood Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of Shirley Cook, 465 Martin Rd., located near Ferry Rd.
Leonza Graves
REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Leonza (Hawk) Graves, 51, of 86 Stoney Creek School Road, died Friday, March 13, 1998, in Duke Medical Center, Durham.
A native of Caswell County, he was the son of Tony McCaden, who survives, and Bertha Graves. He was born August 16, 1946.
He was a member of Blackwell Baptist Church and an employee of Glen Raven Mills in Burlington.
He was married
to Ollie Totten Graves, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence and father of Yanceyville, survivors include two daughters, Jessica Graves of the residence and Veda Hightower of Reidsville; a son, Jeffrey Leon Graves of the home; three brothers, Randy Graves of Baltimore, James Graves of Orlando, Fla., and Raymond Graves of Mississippi; three sisters, Delores Johnson, Joyce Southern and Gladys McCaden, all of Yanceyville; and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Blackwell Baptist Church with Rev. Everett Dickerson officiating. Burial in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday 7-8 p.m. at Blackwell Baptist Church and other times at his residence. Fulton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Joe Pruitt
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Joe Pruitt, 79, of 763 Kimbro Road, died Sunday, March 15, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
He was the son of Tom Pruitt and Lillie Mae Pruitt Pruitt, born Oct. 6, 1918, in Caswell County, N.C.
He was a retired carpenter and farmer. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was married
to Sallie Barker Pruitt, who survives.
In addition to his wife, survivors include four daughters, Edith Davis and Jane Soloman, both of Yanceyville, Dean Massey of Danville, Va., and Elizabeth Fuqua of West Yanceyville; one son, Harold Pruitt of Yanceyville; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Yanceyville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Clitus Grubbs.
The family will receive family and friends at the home of his daughter, Elizabeth Fuqua, 2228 U.S. Hwy 158 West, Yanceyville.

Evelyn Rakes
EDEN, N.C. - Evelyn Murray Rakes, 93, 521 Kemp St., died Sunday night, March 15, 1998, at Britthaven of Madison.
A native of Stoneville, she was a homemaker and a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Elaine Hart of Danville, Va., and Geraldine Rakes of Eden; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday in Lawson Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Fair Funeral Home, and other times at the residence, 521 Kemp St., Eden.
Jason Barnard
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Jason Lee Barnard, 24, died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem.
Born May 9, 1973, in Danville, Va., he was a son of Sterling Diggs Barnard and Ruth Craddock Barnard, who survive.
He was a member of West End Christian Church.
He graduated from Chatham High School and attended Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. He also attended A & T State University in Winston-Salem.
He was employed by the Custom Car Hi Fi in Winston Salem.
In addition to his mother and father of Chatham, Va., survivors include a brother, John S. Barnard of Portsmouth, Va.; his grandmother, Rachel D. Craddock of Chatham; and his grandfather, Jude T. Craddock of Chatham.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at West End Christian Church by the Rev. June H. Hughes. Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park in Chatham, Va.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at Scott Funeral Home in Chatham, Va., and other times at the residence of 1157 Hawkins Road, Chatham, Va.
Ruby Powers
PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Funeral services for Ruby Moss Powers, 80, 2366 Walters Mill Road, will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Darrell Campbell and the Rev. Stan Lawton. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
She died Thursday afternoon, March 19, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health since May 1997.
Born March 20, 1917, in Rockingham County, she was the daughter of John Robert Moss and Lula Smith Moss.
She was married
to Thomas S. Bledsoe of Danville. She was later married
to Leslie Powers, who died in 1976.
A resident of the Mountain Hill community for most of her life, she had lived in Providence for the past 21 years.
For 35 years, she worked as a nurse.
She was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
Survivors include a son, Tommie "Pee Wee" Bledsoe of Providence; a daughter, Marie "Sis" Gibson of the Mountain Hill community; two brothers, Charlie Moss of Portsmouth, Va., and John Moss of Martinsville, Va.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was also predeceased by two sons, John W. Bledsoe and Harvey Neal Bledsoe.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
William Miles
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - William Herman "Jake" Miles, 75, of 1152 Cook Road, died Friday, March 20, in the VA Hospital in Durham.
A native of Caswell County, he was the son of Walter Miles and Lula Bell Lea Miles. He was a self-employed tobacco farmer.
Survivors include one daughter, Shinnette Graves of Yanceyville; two brothers, Hugh Miles and J.D. Miles, both of Yanceyville; three sisters, Mabel M. Long of Yanceyville, Della M. Cunningham and Barbara Ann Miles, both of Washington, D.C.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at High Rock Baptist Church by the Rev. Wesley Richmond and the Rev. B.R. Inge. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at Fulton Funeral Home in Yanceyville and other times at the residence.
Louise Mae Slade
BLANCH, N.C. - Louise Mae Crumpton Slade, 78, 1381 Blanch Road, died Sunday, March 22, 1998, at the Brian Center in Yanceyville. She had been in declining health for two years.
Born in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Sherwood Lee and Ida Fitch Crumpton.
She was retired from Taylor Nursing Home and was a homemaker.
She was also a member of Purley United Methodist Church and of the United Methodist Women.
She was married
to John Mastin Slade, who predeceased her.
Survivors include one daughter, Brenda S. Haynes of Blanch; and two grandchildren, John Haynes of Fayetteville and Shanda Walker of Ruffin.
Graveside rites will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Purley United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Brenda Haynes, 1361 Blanch Road.
Memorials may be made to Purley United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund or to the donor's choice.
