Lillian Clark
SEMORA, N.C. - Lillian Stone Clark, 86, 14495 N.C. 119, died Tuesday, March 31, 1998, at the Brian Center in Yanceyville.
A native of Person County, she was a daughter of John and Ada Gravitte Stone.
She was first married
to Samuel Murray, who predeceased her. She was later married
to John Edward Clark, who also predeceased her.
She was a member of Church of God of Roxboro.
Survivors include four stepdaughters, Betty C. Lowery, Elsie C. Whitlow and Mary M. Whitfield, all of Roxboro, and Miriam M. Briggs of Greensboro; a sister, Bertha S. White of Roxboro; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Brooks & White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. J. Harold Palmer. Burial will be in Lebanon Christian Church Cemetery in Semora.
Jerome Long
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Jerome Long, 70, 1026 Pallie Watlington Road, died Wednesday, April 1, 1998, at his residence.
Born Oct. 3, 1927, in Caswell County, he was a son of William King Long and Charlotte Dodson Long.
He was married
to Mary Blackwell Long, who survives.
He was a member of New Zion Baptist Church in Milton, where he was a deacon and a former church treasurer.
He was a self-employed tobacco farmer.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Mary C. Motley of Waynesville, Mo., and Valeria L. Russell of Pelham; five sons, Robert Edward Long and Jerome Long Jr., both of Danville, Va., and William Irvin Long, James Dewey Long and Harvey Lewis Long, all of Yanceyville; two sisters, Catherine L. Moore of Blanch and Alma L. Stokes of Yanceyville; two brothers, Herbert Long of Mebane and Isiah Long of Blanch; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at New Zion Baptist Church in Milton by the Rev. Zeb Kimber. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Fulton Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Arnold Carter
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Arnold Lee Carter, 58, 1073 U.S. 158-East, died Sunday, April 5, 1998, at Vencor Hospital in Greensboro.
His health had been declining for several years.
Born July 19, 1939, in Rockingham County, he was a son of Cable George Carter Sr. and Alice Matlock Carter, who survives.
He owned and operated Carter's Used Auto Parts.
He attended Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church.
He was predeceased by his father in 1978.
In addition to his mother of the residence, he is survived by two brothers, Luke Carter of Yanceyville, and C.G. Carter Jr. of Mebane; two nieces, Michelle Day and Lauren Elizabeth Carter; and two nephews, Christopher Ryan Carter and Bradley James Carter.
A graveside service will be conducted 3 p.m. Tuesday at Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Mark Smith.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Marley Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of his mother.
Robert Loftin
AYDEN, N.C. - Robert Earl Loftin, 79, died Saturday, April 4, 1998, in Pitt County Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Wilkerson Funeral Home chapel in Greenville by the Rev. Clayton Guthrie and Rev. Michael Hearp. Burial will be in the Loftin Family Cemetery at the homeplace.
He was married
to Blanche Mills Loftin.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Janette Loftin Mills and Tony Mills of Greenville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Wayland Loftin and Betty Loftin, of Martinsville, Va., and the Rev. Paul Lavern Loftin of Morehead City and Belinda Loftin of Vanceboro; two brothers, Elmer R. Loftin and Walter Loftin Jr., both of Ayden; two sisters, Vera Loftin Claybrook of Ayden, and Inez Loftin Pippin of Fremont; seven grandchildren, Lori Pack and her husband, Dan, of Charlotte; Tony Mills of Wilmington, Jana Mills of Greenville, Robert Bryan Loftin and his wife, Jennifer, and Justin Brad Loftin, all of Martinsville, Va., Paula York and her husband, Darrell, and Erin Loftin, all of Morehead City; and two great-grandchildren, Andrew Pack and Justin Pack, both of Charlotte.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the home, 1269 Hines Drive Extension, Ayden.
Gurdine Bliss
RALEIGH, N.C. - Gurdine Link Bliss, 72, 903 St. Mary's St., died Saturday, April 4, 1998.
She is survived by her two sons, Lawrence (Larry) Noel Bliss and Bryan Link Bliss.
Mrs. Bliss was the daughter of Lucian Noel and Ethel Drewry Link and the niece of Mrs. Gurdine Drewry Moore, all of Danville. After graduation from Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, she taught history at Averett College.
In 1953, she was married
to her former husband, Milton Bliss of Thomasville, N.C. The family moved to North Carolina that year, where Mr. Bliss taught in the Chapel Hill public schools. Their son Lawrence (Larry) was born there in 1954.
The Blisses resided in Greensboro from 1955 to 1963. Mr. Bliss taught band and choral music at Page High School. Their son Bryan was born in 1962.
Mrs. Bliss appeared in over 70 plays in Greensboro and Raleigh community theatres.
She was enthusiastic member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Raleigh. At the time of her death, she was directing a production of the musical "Godspell," using teenagers from the church.
She was also employed as a librarian at N.C. State University, where she was earning a masters degree in liberal arts.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran in Raleigh. Visitation will be at the church from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, charitable contributions be made to the organization of one's choice.
Buddie Leonard
PELHAM, N.C. - Buddie Preston Leonard, 143 Oak Forest Drive, formerly of 442 Morgan Rd., Eden, died Thursday, April 2, 1998, at his residence after several months of declining health.
He was born Aug. 2, 1908, in Rockingham County.
Before retiring, he worked for more than 25 years at Fieldcrest Mills in Eden.
He was active at the Spray Nutrition Site in Eden and was once an avid bowler with Senior Citizens Bowling League.
He was married
to Katherine Wilson Leonard, who died Oct. 7, 1988. He was also predeceased by a son.
Survivors include two sons, Rodger Dale Leonard of the residence and Wesley P. Leonard of Pelham; four daughters, Inez L. Burleson, Barbara L. Meeks, Brenda L. Corum and Virginia L. Foley, all of Eden; a sister, Ada L. Hailey of Eden; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were conducted 2 p.m. Monday, April 6, 1998, in Overlook Cemetery.
Fair Funeral Home, Eden, was in charge of arrangements.
Rufus Blackwell
PELHAM, N.C. - Rufus Joseph Blackwell, 93, 249 Robinson Road, died Tuesday, April 7, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born March 29, 1905, in Caswell County, he was a son of Tillmon and Lemma Swann Blackwell.
He was married
to Willie Blackwell, who predeceased him.
He was employed by N&W Railroad.
Survivors include two sons, Armstead Blackwell of Pelham and Rufus Blackwell of Dayton, Ohio; two daughters, Lemma Crafton of Jamaica, N.Y., and Luzetta Farmer of Blairs, Va.,; a sister, Kate Williams of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 25 grandchildren; 76 great-grandchildren; and 25 great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday from Shady Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. John Doe. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body may be viewed from 4 until 8 p.m. tonight at Cunningham and Hughes Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Walter Broadhead
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Dr. Walter Eugene Broadhead, 42, of 4220 Old N.C. 86 North, died Tuesday, April 7, 1998, at his residence.
Born May 14, 1955, in Kapanga, Belgian Congo, he was a son of Alfred Howard Broadhead and Patricia Bailey Broadhead.
He was a graduate of Davidson College and Duke University Medical School. He received his Ph.D. in Epidemiology from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He worked at Duke University doing research on depression and social support systems.
He was an associate professor at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, and practiced medicine at Broadhead Family Practice in Yanceyville.
He was a member of Purley United Methodist Church.
His wife was Carol Wells Broadhead, who survives.
He was predeceased by his mother.
In addition to his father and wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Alice Ann Broadhead of the residence; a son, Geoffrey Thomas Broadhead of the residence; two sisters, Karen Carroll and Sandra Arehart, both of Chapel Hill; and a brother, Daniel Broadhead of Fairfax, Va.
A memorial service will be conducted 4 p.m. today at Purley United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jack Heinsohn Jr. and the Rev. Floyd Morrow.
The family will be at the residence.
