Rose Florance

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Rose Carter Florance, died Wednesday, April 8, 1998, following several years of declining health.

Born and raised in the Shady Grove community, she spent her entire adult life in Yanceyville.

She was married icon to Alvis Lea Florence, who predeceased her.

She served as past president of Caswell County chapter of the D.A.R., U.D.C., Colonial Dames of the XVII Century and was past chairman of the Caswell County Heart Fund.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Thomas Carter Florance.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Florance Rice of Tappahannock, Va.; and two grandchildren, James Moore Rice III and Betsey Stuart Rice, both of Charlotte.

There will be a private graveside service and no visitation.

Hooper Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Kathleen Haney

PELHAM, N.C. - Kathleen Collins Haney, 61, 7-D Meadow View Trailer Park, died Wednesday, April 8, 1998, in her residence.

Born April 7, 1937, in Danville, Va., she was a daughter of William Joseph Collins and Lizzie Jane "Ma" Stanley Collins.

She was married icon to Carlton Haney, who survives.

She was of the Baptist faith and owner and operator of Ma Collins Kids Pumpkin Patch.

In addition to her husband of Reidsville, survivors include a daughter, Bonnie H. Tarte of Providence; a sister, Ivenia Barbour of Danville; and two brothers, Jack Collins of Danville and Lawrence Collins of Providence.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Katie Collins and Nellie Marie Roach; and five brothers, Harry Lee Collins, Cecil Stanley Collins, Eugene Collins, Gilbert Collins and Jim Collins.

The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday at Townes Memorial Chapel in Danville by the Rev. Michael Kent. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at Sherry Cook's residence, 1516 Lovelace Road, Pelham.

Arnold Miller

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Arnold Leroy Miller, 49, 8482 Old N.C. Highway 86 North, died Thursday, April 9, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 4, 1949, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was a son of Hardy Arnold Miller and Alice Ware Miller, who survives.

He was a graduate of Danville Community College and was employed as a master plumber at Dan River Mills Inc.

He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Yanceyville.

In addition to his mother of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Angel Elaine Miller of the residence; a sister, Luretta Rich of Danville, Va., and Robert Miller of Providence.

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in Floral Hills Memory Gardens, Hwy. 58 East, Danville, by the Rev. Joel Tate.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Marley funeral Home of Yanceyville is in charge of arrangements.

Bula Whitmire

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Bula Ross Whitmire, 86, 1700 Pamalee Drive, died Wednesday, April 8, 1998, in Highland House.

She was a 1939 graduate of Furman University in Greenville, S.C.

She was also a member of the North Carolina Teachers' Association.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas Ross Whitmire of Little Washington, and John Q. Whitmire of Danville, Va.; a sister, Thelma Phillips of Marion, N.C.; and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. today at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home by the Rev. James C. Cammack. Burial will be in Lafayette Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends 2-3 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Beulah Johnson

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Beulah Stokes Johnson, 2406 Wagon Wheel Road, died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.

A native of Rockingham County, she was a daughter of Willis and Lucinda Glass Stokes.

She was a member of Mt. Herman Baptist Church in Ruffin.

She was employed by Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Miller of Richmond for many years before she retired.

She is survived by her sister, Jessie Stokes of the residence.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Herman Baptist Church by the Rev. James Watkins. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body may be viewed from 2-8 p.m. Friday at Fulton Funeral Home, Yanceyville. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Alexander Graves

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Alexander Graves, 5498 Burton Chapel Road, died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at Meadowland Triangle Hospice in Hillsborough.

Born June 8, 1925, in Caswell County, he was a son of Azzie Allen Graves and Lizzie Mims Graves.

He was married icon to Sarah Corbett Graves, who predeceased him.

He was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church and was a bus driver in Washington, D.C., before he retired.

Survivors include a daughter, Felisha G. Mayo of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Herman Graves of Pelham and Percey Graves of Reidsville; three sisters, Lucille G. Poole of Virginia Beach, Va., Mattie Sue Lipscomb of Danville, Va., and Mary G. Russell of Yanceyville; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Mineral Springs Baptist Church by the Rev. Freddie Seabrook. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Fulton Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

Charlotte Henry

RUFFIN, N.C. - Charlotte May Onsk Henry, 62, 245 Ashland Road, died Sunday, April 12, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 24, 1935, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of Samuel Onsk and Ruth Bankard Onsk.

She was employed by 7-11 as a cashier and was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include three daughters, Kathy Mitchell of Ruffin, Mary Smith of Baltimore and Robin Boisseau of California; and three sons, James Boisseau and Erick Henry, both of Baltimore, and Ricky Henry of Virginia Beach.

A memorial service will be conducted at a later date.

Marley Funeral Home, Yanceyville, is in charge of arrangements.

James Hughes

MILTON, N.C. - James Hughes, 85, 162 New Haven Church Road, died Wednesday, April 15, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center, Danville, Va.

Born Dec. 23, 1912, in Caswell County, he was a son of George and Annie Hughes.

He was a deacon at New Haven Baptist Church since 1952 and served as chairman for more than 30 years.

Survivors include four daughters, Jean Humphrey of Bayville, N.J., and Quency Long of Trevose, Penn., and JoAnn Williams of Yanceyville and Betty Pritchett of Danville, Va.; a son, James Hughes Jr. of the residence; two brothers, Paul Hughes of Danville and Irvin Hughes Sr. of Milton; four sisters, Flora McDuffie and Annie Mae Miller, both of Danville, and Elizabeth Pratt of Washington, D.C., and Mabel Dow of Gary, Ind.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at New Haven Baptist Church by the Rev. Harold Wenstley. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The viewing for family and friends will be from 12-8 p.m. today at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends at the residence.

Loyd Underwood

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Loyd W. Underwood, 87, 1926 Park Springs Road, died Wednesday, April 15, 1998, at his residence.

Born Nov. 25, 1910, in Wythe County, Va., he was a son of Charlie Underwood and Margaret Emma Edwards Underwood.

On July 2, 1938, he was married icon to Lillie Cornell Underwood, who survives.

He was a member of Park Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Until he retired in November 1975, he was employed in the finishing department of Dan River Inc.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a daughter, Doris U. Murphy of Danville, Va.; three sons, Paul Underwood, Len W. Underwood and Wesley W. Underwood, all of Providence; a sister, Rosa U. Martin of Danville, Va; a brother, Jesse L. Underwood of Danville, Va; 10 grandchildren and a step-grandson; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Park Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Mark Moore. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Barker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
