Bernice Riley
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Bernice Norman Riley, 81, 1063 Rudd Ridge Road, died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
Born March 28, 1917, in Orange County, he was a son of Crawford Riley and Mary G. Riley.
He farmed all of his life and was retired from White Furniture Company. He attended Bush Arbor Baptist Church.
He was married
to Elizabeth Catherine Rudd Riley, who predeceased him.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Gus Riley.
Survivors include two sons, Roy Lee Riley of Yanceyville, and Herman Bernice Riley of Mebane; one brother, Winford Riley of Burlington; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Wallace Smith. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7 -8:30 p.m. tonight at Marley Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of his son, Roy Lee Riley, 946 Rudd Ridge Road.
John Badgett
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - John Edward Badgett, 1096 Hodges Dairy Road, died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center, Danville, Va.
Born Oct. 19, 1932, in Rockingham County, he was the son of James and Annie Palmer Badgett.
He was a member of Blackwell Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, superintendent of Sunday school and sang in the male chorus. He was also a member of Caswell Credit Union and was a Scoutmaster in the Boy Scouts.
He was an employee of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, where he was a tire booker before he retired.
He was married
to Nevoid Watlington Badgett, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Christopher Badgett of Yanceyville; a daughter, Terri Mims Foster of Providence; a sister, Ruby Jones of Dover, Del.; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Blackwell Baptist Church by the Rev. Everett Dickerson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 tonight at the church, and other times at the residence.

George Barber
PROVIDENCE, N.C. - George Allen Barber, 75, 58 Dor-rie Lane, died Tuesday morning, April 21, 1998, at his residence in Caswell County after a decline in health that started in 1992.
Born Feb. 3, 1923, in Eden, N.C., he was a son of the late Tony Barber and Kate Earles Barber.
He had lived in Providence for a number of years and was the owner and operator of George's N.C. Inspection Station on Walter Mill Road. He had worked at Diston Manufacturing Co. for a number of years in his early life.
He was first married
to Neva Cook Barber, who died Aug. 3, 1994. He was later married
to Dora McCormick Norton Barber, who survives.
He attended Gatewood Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include a son, Jerry Allen Barber of Chester, Va.; two sisters, Elizabeth Thacker of Ruffin and Florence Meeks of Eden; a brother, Earl Barber of Danville, Va.; a stepdaughter, Barbara Faulk of Charlotte; a stepson, Homer E. Norton Jr. of Pelham; two granddaughters, Kelly Barber of Danville, Va., and Katie Barber of Chester, Va.; three step-grandchildren, Brad Norton of Pelham, Todd Norton of the U.S. Marines and Dorie Faulk of Raleigh.
He was also predeceased by a sister, Virginia Counts; and two brothers, Morton Barber and Jack Barber.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Johnny C. Gentry. Burial will be in Schoolfield Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence, 58 Dor-rie Lane.
Frances Leigh
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Frances Loraine Garrison Leigh, 77, 108 Cemetery St., died Monday, April 20, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 16, 1921, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Andrew Jackson Garrison and Ester Davis Garrison.
She was married
to John Nemrod Leigh, who died in 1984.
She was a member of Community Baptist Church and was retired from Hanover Mills, Inc.
Survivors include a daughter, Vickie Lynn Webster of Yanceyville; a son, Brodie Banks King of Yanceyville; and a grandson.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Community Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Mark Smith.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Marley Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.
Thelma Doughty
LONG BEACH, N.C. - Thelma Mae Drewery Doughty, 91, 135 N.E. 4th St., died Sunday, April 26, 1998, at Brunswick Cove Nursing Center.
Born Sept. 28, 1906, in Altavista, Va., she was a daughter of William Ike and Mary Queen Drewery.
She was married
to Major Vernon Doughty, who predeceased her.
She moved to the Long Beach area from Danville, Va., 30 years ago.
She was retired from Dan River Mills in Danville, Va. She was a member of Oak Island Senior Citizens Club and Oak Island V.F.W. Auxiliary.
She was also a member of Southall Baptist Church in Danville, Va.
Survivors include a sister, Annie Drewery Matthews of Hurt, Va.; a brother, William Henry Drewery of Burlington; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was also predeceased by a son, John Wesley East Jr.; and two daughters, Betty Jean East and Frances East Webster.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday in Mountain View Cemetery, Danville, Va., by the Rev. Robert Vermillion.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Peacock-Newnam Funeral Home, Southport, and also 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Swicegood Funeral Home, Danville, Va.
Raymond Worley
PELHAM, N.C. - Raymond Lee Worley, 69, of 2395 Chandler's Mill Road, died Wednesday, April 29, 1998 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.
Born May 24, 1928, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of Thomas B. Worley and Annie Brown Worley.
He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 30 years. He pioneered work with railroad mail.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He was married
to Eveyln Webster Worley, who survives. They had been married
for 50 years.
In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include two daughters, Linda W. Harlow of Pelham and Barbara W. VanDen Herrick of Burlington; one son, Raymond L. Worley Jr. of Danville, Va.; one sister, Ruby W. Ligon of Pelham; and 10 grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Lively Stones Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Michael Kent.
The family will receive friends at the home.

James Spivey
JAMESTOWN, N.C. - James Carroll Spivey, 62, of Jamestown, N.C., died Friday, May 1, 1998, at his residence.
He was married
to Glenda Bullard Spivey, who survives.
He was pastor of First Baptist Church in Yanceyville, N.C., from 1968 to 1984.
Other survivors include a son, Neal Spivey of Danville; two daughters, Jan Campbell of Summerville, S.C., and Kay Underwood of Greensboro, N.C.; one sister, Barbara Minor of Bradley, S.C.; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Guilford Baptist Church with burial in Guilford Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Forbis & Dick Guilford Chapel, Greensboro.
Jack Shumate
EDEN, N.C. - Jack Gilbert Shumate, 71, formerly of Greensboro, died Sunday, May 3, 1998, at Brian Center in Eden.
A native of Danville, Va., he was the son of Irene Gilbert Shumate, who survives, and David J. Shumate.
He was a retired truck driver of Pomona Pipe Products and S & W Motor Lines in Greensboro.
He was a member of Stoneville First Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Navy in World War II.
In addition to his mother of Danville, Va., and wife of Eden, survivors include a son, John D. Shumate and wife Judy Lawson Shumate of Eden; a daughter, Jo "Jody" Shumate McKee and husband, Johnny B. McKee, of Durham; a sister, Barbara S. Keeling of Keysville, Va.; and two grandchildren, Joel and Julie McKee of Durham.
The family will receive friends 7-9 tonight at Reynolds Funeral Service, Eden, and other times at the home of John & Judy Shumate, 172 Longwood Drive, Eden.
Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Wednesday at Reynolds Funeral Service Chapel with graveside service in Highland Burial Park, Danville, Va., on North Main Street.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1114 Magnolia St., Greensboro.
Betsy Martin Carden
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Betsy Martin Carden, 68, 1515 Franklin St. #34, died Tuesday, May 5, 1998, at her residence.
Born Aug. 30, 1929, she was a daughter of George Gilbert Martin and Lacy Williams Morgan Martin.
She was a member of Moseley Memorial United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Robert E. Lee Elementary School, George Washington High School, Anne Boyer School of Dance and Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia in 1952.
She taught at Radford College from 1952-1954. She received her master's degree in dance from New York University. She began as a member of the dance faculty at Brooklyn College, where she became a tenured professor and chairperson of the dance department, retiring in 1986.
She served as board member, president and first executive director of American College Dance Festival Association (ACDFA) from 1979 to 1991.
She originated its scholarship program, helped develop its choreography series and supervised many regional and national college dance festivals. She also served as president of American Dance Guild. She was active in American Dance Festival and was executive director of Dance Notation Bureau.
On Aug. 5, 1967, she was married
to John Richard Carden, who survives of the residence.
She is also survived by two sisters, Ardelle Morgan Carter of Lake Wales, Fla., and Mary Jane Martin Bright of Kinston; five brothers, W. Ray Martin of Tucson, Ariz., and James P. Morgan, George G. Martin Jr., Robert H. Martin and M. Gene Martin, all of Danville.
The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. Friday at Townes Funeral Home. A memorial service will be conducted 3 p.m. Friday at the funeral home by the Rev. Richard Cobb. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery.
