Carl Jones
DURHAM, N.C. - Carl D. Jones, 82, of Milton Road, died Sunday morning, Dec. 6, 1998, at his residence.
Born in Danville, Va., he was the son of Mark Daniel Jones and Annie Brooks Pruitt Jones.
He was a member of Grace Baptist Church and the Watkins Bible Class. He was the owner of Jones Plumbing Company. He served as a medic in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Mary Smith Jones; two daughters, Dr. Elinor Jones of Durham and Betsy J. Fletcher and her husband Lt. Col. Kent of Durham; one grandson, Brian Fletcher of Durham; one granddaughter, Kim Fletcher of Durham; two sisters, Florence Reynolds of High Point and Katie McKinney of Danville, Va.; one brother, Austin Jones of Blairs, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Baptist church with the Rev. Dr. Malbert Smith, Jr. officiating. Graveside rites will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Highland Burial Park, Danville, Va.
Pallbearers will be Harold Wilson, David McKinney, L.W. McKinney, Fred Reynolds, Rosser Moore, Randy Fletcher, Danny Ricketts, Austin Jones, Jr. and Frank Jones.
Honorary Pallbearers will be William Maddux, Bob Pollard, Watkins Bible Class, S.J. Wilson, Jr., Harold Strawbridge, Joe Eakes, and the staff of Eno Valley Post Office.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Clements Funeral Home.

Lavina 'Lou' Vaden
PELHAM, N.C. - Lavina Cornelia "Lou" Vaden, 76, 530 Holland Road, died Monday morning, Feb. 16, 1998, at the Brian Center, Yanceyville, after six months of declining health and four months in the Brian Center.
Born Jan. 8, 1922, in Danville, Va., she was a daughter of Dorsey Herman Vaden and Nettie Darnell Vaden.
A resident of Holland Road for most of her life, she worked as a nurse aide at Roman Eagle Memorial Home for a number of years.
She was a member of State Line Baptist Church.
Survivors include an adopted daughter, Beeda Royal of Danville; a sister, Irene Vaden Hamlett of Holland Road; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Swicegood Funeral Home by the Rev. Wayne Wallace. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of her brother-in-law, Sam Hamlett, 522 Holland Road, Pelham.
Delsie Hall
EDEN, N.C. - M. Delsie Meadors Hall, 77, of 429 South Hamilton St., died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998 at Morehead Nursing Center.
She was born in Pittsylvania County.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Eden and of Irene Taylor Sunday school class.
She worked for several years at Dan River Inc. in Danville, Va. She retired from Karastan Rug Mill in Eden.
Survivors include her husband, Lester Hall, Sr., of the residence; two sons, Morris Hall of Climax and Mark Hall of Graham; one daughter, Mollie Manley of Eden; four sisters, Ola Davis, Annie Lewis, Helen Nichols and Ruth Soyars, all of Danville, Va.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Eden. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park in Danville, Va.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at Fair Funeral Home, Eden and at other times at the residence.
Carrie McGuire
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Carrie Neighbors McGuire, 88, of 290 Wall St. died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, at Patton's Family Care.
Born April 20, 1910, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Charlie Pinkney Neighbors and Daisy Rudd Neighbors.
She was married
to William Walter McGuire, who predeceased her in 1967. She was also predeceased by one son, William Franklin McGuire.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, and was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, Walter Ray McGuire of Yanceyville; one daughter, Sophia Anne Harvey of Graham; one brother, John Neighbors of Purley; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. David Powell officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Betty Cook
EDEN, N.C. - Betty Chaney Cook, 64, of 11720 Highway 87, died Friday morning, Dec. 11, 1998, at her home after a long illness.
She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T.B. Chaney.
A member of Sovereign Grace Baptist Church in Eden, she was a post sponsor of the LPN student nurses in Martinsville, Va. She was retired from The Memorial Hospital of Martinsville-Henry County.
She was predeceased by her husband, William Cook, and a sister, Iris Chaney Brown. Survivors include a son, Benny J. Mangus of Eden; a daughter, Elizabeth Jones of Eden; two sisters, Virginia Woodall and Doris Smith, both of Eden; a brother, Melvin Chaney of Eden; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Fair Funeral Home chapel with burial at Overlook Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and at other times will be at the residence.
Robert Winn Johnson
EDEN, N.C. - Robert Winn "Bobby" Johnson, 70, of 1703 Woodrow Ave., died Friday evening, Dec. 11, 1998, at Morehead Memorial Hospital.
Born in Draper, now Eden, Johnson was the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Johnson Sr.
He was married
to Naomi Morris Johnson, who survives.
Johnson was a retired employee of Fair Funeral Home Inc. in Eden. He also owned and operated Eden Lock and Key Service.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by a daughter, Beverly Winn Johnson of Eden.
Johnson was preceded in death by eight brothers Willie, Lawrence, Tommy, J.D., Clarence, Frank, Mack and George; and four sisters Mozelle Essic, Pauline Johnson, Ruth Johnson and Louise Pryor.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Fair Funeral Home Chapel in Eden. Burial will be in Dan View Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Alvin Hall
DURHAM, N.C. - Alvin N. Hall Sr., 81, of Durham, N.C., died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998. He was a native of Redwood, in Franklin County, Va.
He was retired from Belk-Leggett, but prior to his retirement he opened, owned and operated the Lamp-er-Tarium in Durham. He specialized in repairing lamps and designing lamps.
Survivors include one daughter, Vivian H. Slade of Danville, Va.; two brothers, Thomas Hall of Martinsville, Va., and Walter H. Hall of Eden; four sisters, Hazel Barker of Martinsville, Va., Lula Craddock of Stuart, Va., Joyce Shively of Troutville, and June Stanley of Lexington, Va.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Al Hall Jr.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Flora Funeral Chapel, Rocky Mount, Va., with the Rev. Gene Jester officiating. Burial will be in the Redwood United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of his daughter, 100 Nor-Dan Drive, Danville, Va.
Savannah Chandler
GASTON, N.C. - Savannah Osborne Chandler, 76, of 409 Huey St., died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, at Hampton Woods Nursing Home in Jackson.
Born June 4, 1922, in Elkin, she was the daughter of Harvey Lewis Osborne and Ethel West Osborne.
She was married
to Raymond Allen Chandler, who died May 28, 1978.
She was of the Baptist faith. She worked for Dan River Inc. before moving to Roanoke Rapids, where she resided for 35 years. She retired after 25 years of service with J.P. Stevens Mills in Roanoke Rapids.
Survivors include two daughters, Charlotte C. Haymore of Danville, Va., Shirley C. Moore of Gaston; one son, R. Calvin Chandler of Gaston; two brothers, James H. Osborne of Danville and Eugene W. Osborne of Providence; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by one brother, John Dee Osborne
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gilbert Hawks officiating. Burial will be in Providence Baptist Church cemetery.

Charles Parker
RALEIGH, N.C. - Charles P. Parker, 88, of Sunnybrook Road, formerly of Halifax, Va., died Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, at Sunnybrook Nursing Home.
Born Nov. 8, 1910, in Halifax county, he was the son of W. Benjamin Parker and Bettie Baker Cole Parker.
He was married
to Nellie Mae "Bee" Parker, who predeceased him.
He was a member of the Beth Car Baptist Church. He was a retired school principal and former minister. He attended Bluefield College, University of Richmond, and Croza Seminary and received a masters of education from Longwood. He was active in the Halifax Masonic Lodge.
He initiated and was active in jail ministry in Halifax jail. He was a tutor for those taking the General Education Diploma test. The local Sertoma Club recognized his efforts and awarded him the Service To Mankind Award in 1982. In addition, he supported his wife with her deaf ministry in Halifax county. He was recipient of the Governor's Silver Volunteer Award.
Survivors include one daughter, Bettie P. Ittenbach of Cary, N.C.; two sons, William Gary Parker of Boulder, Colo. and Walter B. Parker of Halifax; one brother, Henry Parker of South Boston; and six grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Beth Car Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in the Halifax Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his son, Walter Parker, 1070 Carter's Lane.
Luelena Poteat
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Luelena Lea Poteat, 86, of 583 Main St., Apt. 7C, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at Jefferson Park Center Nursing Home.
Born April 17, 1912, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Robert Lea and Clara Scott Lea.
She was married
to John Poteat, who predeceased her.
Survivors include five stepchildren.
A funeral will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at River Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Blanch, with burial in the church cemetery.
