Mary Austin
Mary Rawlins Austin, formerly of Park Springs Road, Caswell County, N.C., died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.
Born Aug. 12, 1909, in Ruffin, N.C., she was the daughter of Charles Edward Rawlins and Mary Ellen Carter Rawlins.
She was married
to James Austin, who predeceased her in 1969.
She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Harrelson and her husband, H. Turner Harrelson, of 779 Allison Road, Ruffin, Virginia Nelson and her husband, Bill Nelson, of 878 Luna Lake Road, Sue McMinnis and her husband, Donald B. McMinnis, of 2396 Afton Road; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethel United Methodist Church with interment in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Townes Funeral Home. At other times the family will receive friends at the residences of her daughters.

Mary Shelton
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Mary Hutchens Shelton, 74, of 1542 Andover Ave., died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, in Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.
A native of Stuart, Va., she was a retired relief operator for P. Lorillard. She was a member of Rehobeth Baptist Church.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Shelton.
Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn May of Greensboro; two brothers, James Hutchens and Dillard Hutchens, both of Danville, Va.; four sisters, Katie Tate of Reidsville, Joann Jackson of Wake Forest, Elaine Furr and Ruby Scearce, both of Danville, Va.; and one grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted 3 p.m. today at Forbis and Dick N. Elm Street Funeral Home, with burial in Lakeview Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 1:30-3 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at 4623 McKnight Mill Road.
Jewel Brown
DURHAM, N.C. - Jewel Elaine Morgan Brown, 71, of 607 Hollyridge Drive, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at Durham Regional Hospital.
Born Dec. 6, 1927, in Greensboro, she was the daughter of James M. Morgan and Leonora Morgan.
She was married
to Christopher Andrew Brown Sr., who predeceased her.
She was a graduating member of the class of 1946 of Durham High School, and after her marriage, she lived in Reidsville, Virginia Beach, Va., and Durham. She was an American Red Cross certified in-home health care provider, and she took care of many elderly persons during her life.
Survivors include three sons, Chris Brown Jr. of Danville, Va., Wade Brown of Morganton and David Brown of Rougemont; one daughter, Rebecca Brown of Durham; two sisters, Betty Leary of Durham and Doris Sandling of Raleigh; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Brown; and a brother, Lennon Morgan.
A funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham, with the Rev. Dr. Orville S. Wintermute officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence.
Hunter Mitchell
BLANCH, N.C. - The Rev. Hunter Lee Mitchell, 75, of 2193 High Rock School Road, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 24, 1923, he was a native of Caswell County and the son of Zack and Susie Mitchell.
He was a member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, where he was assistant pastor and sang in the senior choir. He was former superintendent of Sunday school at High Rock Baptist Church, a member of the NAACP, and a 4-H leader. He was also a member of Leasburg Masonic Lodge No. 698.
He was a retired employee of Dan River Inc. and a self-employed tobacco farmer in the Blanch community. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Dixon Mitchell of the residence; four sons, Curtis V. Mitchell of Winston-Salem, Zelodis M. Mitchell of Asheville, Elder Reginald E. Mitchell of Boston, Mass., and Roderick B. Mitchell of New York; three daughters, Hervolene V. Mitchell of Philadelphia, Pa., Vera L. Foster of Cupper City, Fla., and Brenda L. Mitchell of Durham; five brothers, John Mitchell, Robert Mitchell, and Eddie Mitchell, all of Blanch, and Zackiah Mitchell and Alvis Mitchell, both of Greensboro; two sisters, Minnie B. Jeffries of Blanch, and Nannie Mae Corbett of Mebane; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church in Semora with Bishop Edward Breedlove officiating. Burial will be in the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church cemetery.
Visitation will be at 2-8 p.m. Monday at Fulton Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.
Verlinda Cook
PELHAM, N.C. - Verlinda Joyce Cook, 49, of 1244 Arch Cook Road, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at the Stratford Health Care Center.
Born Nov. 12, 1949, in Danville, she was the stepdaughter of Percy Gammon and the daughter of the late Lounette Cook Gammon.
She lived her entire life in the Pelham community and was a member of the State Line Baptist Church.
In addition to her stepfather of the residence, survivors include one sister, Betty Wyatt of Darlington, S.C.; and one brother, Danny Powell of Yanceyville.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at State Line Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Wallace officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Lois Crane
SALISBURY, N.C. - Lois Kitty Neal Crane, 79, of 602 Lantz Ave., died Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, at Rowan Regional Medical Center, after a two-year fight with lymphoma cancer.
Born July 19, 1919, in Ringgold, Va., she was the daughter of Kitty Keesee Neal and James Howard Neal.
She was a graduate of Dan River High School and Averett College, both in Danville, Va.
She was employed as assistant manager of Prago-Guys of Salisbury, until it closed.
She was a member of First Baptist Church and the Dorcas Sunday school class. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She was married
to J.C. Crane, who survives.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one son Ted Crane and his wife, Kay, of Danville; one daughter, and her husband, Mrs. Phil (Deborah) Arrington of Pilot Mountain; one sister and her husband, Mrs. Maynard (Melissa) Barker of Ringgold; and four grandchildren, Kara Crane, Matt Mullen, and Trip and Will Arrington.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Summerset Memorial Chapel, Salisbury, with the Rev. Tom Roberts and the Rev. Dr. Phillip A. Cooley officiating.
Interment will be 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends 10-10:50 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Clyde Fowlkes
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Clyde Allison Page Fowlkes, 91, of 3043 Highway 158 West, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at Brian Nursing Center, after a long peroid of declining health.
Born Sept. 24, 1907, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of E.A. Allison and Bertha Mae Hodges Allison.
She graduated from Duke University in the class of 1930. She was a school teacher for many years in Caswell and Robeson Counties. She was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church, a past president of the Methodist Women and a member of the administrative board.
After the death of her mother, she was reared by John and Nettie Hodges Paschall.
She was first married
to Dr. L.G. Page and after his death she married
Harry Lee Fowlkes, who also predeceased her.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Page Dunn of Clarksville, Ind., and Susan Page Creed Percy of Clifton, Va.; two sons, Dr. G. Allison Page and John P. Page, both of Yanceyville; ten grandchildren; and one greatgrandchild.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Prospect United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jack Ruth and the Rev. George Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Henry Fuller
RUFFIN, N.C. - Henry Clay Fuller, 78, of N.C. Highway 700, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Durham.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Loy Kennedy officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military graveside rites.
A native of Axton, Va., he was the son of the late George W. and Mattie Kirks Fuller and had lived in the Mayfield community of Rockingham County most of his life.
He was a retired farmer and a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church. He was a disabled Army veteran of World War II, having received the Purple Heart, E.A.M.E., Theater Ribbon with one Battle Star and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was predeceased by his stepmother, Ethel Travis Fuller; two sisters, Isabelle Fuller Travis and Annie Fuller Travis; and one brother, G. Robert Fuller.
Survivors include one sister, Josie F. Tate and her husband, Hedrick Tate of Danville; two special nieces, Mae Coffey and her husband Bobby Coffey of Ruffin and Gloria Draughn and her husband Alfred Draughn also of Ruffin; and several other nieces and nephews.
The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service.
The family will see friends in the fellowship hall of the church after the service.
Citty Funeral Service in Reidsville is in charge of arrangements.
Sallie Haley
REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Sallie Hines Haley, 83, of 1127 Wolf Island Road, died Saturday night, Jan. 2, 1999, at Vencor Hospital, Greensboro. She had been in declining health since last July.
Born May 15, 1915, in Hinesville, she was the daughter of Rora Hines and Rosa Higgs Hines.
Most of her life was spent in Danville, Va., and Greensboro. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
She was married
to Lee Thomas Haley, who predeceased her on April 25, 1962.
Survivors include six sons, Roger Haley and Charles Haley, both of Reidsville, Clyde Haley, Benny Haley, Neal Haley, Hampton Haley and Jimmy Haley all of Greensboro; three sisters, Dolly Ruth Hylton of Spencer, Minnnie Pickeral of Yanceyville and Denny Easton of Danville; 11 grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Boyd Stokes officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Otis Lewis
REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Otis Lewis, 90, of 910 Walters St., died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at Annie Penn Hospital.
He was married
to Ethel Saunders Lewis, who survives.
He was a native of Danville. He served as a veteran in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Community Baptist Church, and was the owner and operator of Lewis Electric and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
In addition to the wife of the residence, survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Larry Lewis and Debra Lewis of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Frances Debo and Bessie Young, both of Danville, Va.; two step-daughters, Louise Weddle of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Betty Crowder and husband John Crowder of Pleasant Garden; two stepsons, Donald Strader of Reidsville and Ronald Strader and wife Mary Strader of Reidsville; and ten step-grandchildren and many step-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Schoolfield Cemetery in Danville.

John Mims
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - John Mims, 97, 321 Melvin-Wrenn Road, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at his residence after an extended illness.
He was born in Caswell County.
He was married
to Matilda Mimms, who predeceased him.
He was a carpenter. He was a member of Sassafrass Grove Baptist Church where he was a deacon and a member of Leasburg Masonic Lodge No. 648.
Survivors include one son, James Edward Mims of Yanceyville; two daughters, Mary Adelaide Blackwell of Burlington and Florine Mims Shoffner of Greensboro; one sister, Viola Apple of Danville; three foster sisters, Gladys Johnson of Burlington, Roxie Graves and Mary Frances Hills, both of Yanceyville; and two foster brothers, David Henderson and Sidney Henderson, both of Yanceyville. He was predeceased by two sons, Theodore Mims and Tommie Mims; and one daughter, Olivia Poole.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sassafrass Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Carl Bigelow officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
A community viewing will be held noon-2 p.m. Wednesday prior to the service at the church.
Annie Torain
ROXBORO, N.C. - Annie Pettiford Torain, 102, of Roxboro Nursing Center, died Sunday, Jan.3, 1999.
Born May 1, 1896, she was the daughter of Square Pettiford and Candis Bradsher Pettiford.
She was married
to Walter Torain, who predeceased her.
She was a native of Person County and was educated in the public schools of Person County.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. James Baptist Church in Leasburg, N.C., with the Rev. Haywood Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
A viewing will be held noon-4 p.m. today at Plenty's Funeral Home Chapel in Semora, and a wake will follow 7-8 p.m. at St. James Baptist Church in Leasburg. A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. James Baptist Church with the Rev. Haywood Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her niece, 1312 Solomon Lea Road, Leasburg.
Norman Beverly
HIGH POINT, N.C. - Norman Clarence Beverly, 93, of 421 Nathan Hunt Drive, died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center, Danville, Va.
Born Aug. 31, 1905, in Horry County, S.C., he was the son of Outland Holiday Beverly and Ella Cook Beverly.
He was married
Nov. 2, 1929, to Grace Loyal, who died May 5, 1991.
He lived most of his life in the High Point area and worked for Adams-Millis Corp. retiring with 47 years of service. He was a member of Green Street Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Darrell L. Beverly of Danville; and one niece, Delores Beverly Charles of Horry County, S.C.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Sechrest Chapel, E. Lexington Avenue, with the Rev. Gene Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends prior to the funeral at the chapel.
