Dorothy Benton

LEASBURG, N.C. - Dorothy Ann Benton, 48, of 544 Olive Hill Church Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, in Duke University Medical Center, Durham.

Born Dec. 26, 1950, in Gibsonville, she was the daughter of Marion Benton and Ruby Foust Benton, who survive.

She joined Red Hill Baptist Church and later attended New Hope Baptist Church in Leasburg. She was a housekeeper.

In addition to her parents of Gibsonville, survivors include one daughter, Sandra Boswell of Raleigh; two brothers, Leo Benton and David Benton, both of Gibsonville; and one sister, Geraldine Benton of Gibsonville; and a dear friend, Bedford Wagstaff.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at New Hope Baptist Church, Leasburg, with the Rev. John Watlington officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Fulton Funeral Home in Yanceyville is in charge of arrangements.

Wallace Patton

KING, N.C. - Wallace Giles Patton, 69, of 200 Plantation Drive, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, in Silas Creek Manor Nursing Home, Winston-Salem, after two years of declining health.

Born March 26, 1929, in Danville, Va., he was the son of William M. Patton and Ola Summerlin Patton.

He worked in the construction business. He was of the Baptist faith and attended the Baptist Tabernacle. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include three sisters, Jean Patton Hudgins of Spencer, Frances Patton Townsend of Hot Desert Springs, Calif., and Mildred Patton Reville of Milwaukee, Or.

A graveside service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in Mountain View Cementery.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mattie Williamson

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Mattie Lea Graves Williamson, 76, of 255 Cobb Road, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, in the Brian Center Nursing Home.

Born Sept. 27, 1922, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Peter Gwynn Graves and Hattie Watkins Graves.

She was married icon to Travis R. Williamson, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Pearson Chapel A.M.E. Church where she was on the usher board, stewardess board, and the ocean wave club. She was a retired employee of the Caswell County School System.

Survivors include one son, Travis Williamson of Yanceyville; one brother, James "Jimmy" Graves of Yanceyville; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two sons, Jimmy Williamson and Carl Williamson; and one daughter, Janie Delois Williamson.

A funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Pearson Chapel A.M.E. Church with the Rev. George Turner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body may be viewed from 2-8 p.m. today. The family will receive friends at Fulton Funeral Home today from 4-5 p.m. and other times at the residence of her son at 255 Cobb Road in Yanceyville.

Kathryn Howerton

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Kathryn Collis Howerton, 86, formerly of 2311 Elizabeth Ave., died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, at the Brian Center, where she had been a resident for several months.

Born Sept. 11, 1912, in McDowell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Robert N. and Harriet Burgin Collis.

She spent most of her early life in the Danville, Va., area. She was an active member of Centemary United Methodist Church and was retired from AT&T.

She was married icon to H. Willard Howerton, who predeceased her.

Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Phelps McGraw of Winston-Salem; one son, Henry W. Howerton of Rocky Mount; one brother, Harry M. Collis of Danville, Va.; two grandchildren, and two step-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roland Barnhardt officiating.

Vogler and Sons, Main Street Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.

Wayne Graves

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Wayne Morris Graves, 47, of 1430 Belmont Drive, N.W. Washington, D.C., formerly of Yanceyville, N.C., died Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999, at the Washington Hospital Center.

Born March 25, 1951, in Caswell County, he was the son of the late Ottoway Graves and Roxanna Henderson Graves, who survives.

He was a member of Sassafras Grove Baptist Church and was an automobile mechanic for Goodyear Tire Center in Washington, D.C.

In addition to his mother of Yanceyville, survivors include one daughter, Tamara Washington of Washington, D.C.; and six sisters, Kay G. Lewis and Sallie G. Payne, both of Danville, Va., Betty G. Long and Linda G. Mangum, both of Yanceyville, Martha G. Pennix of Mebane, and Roxie G. Giggetts of Pelham.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Sassfras Grove Baptist Church. Burial will be in Ebenzer Baptist Church cemetery.

A viewing will be held 2-8 p.m. Thursday at Fulton Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his mother, 160 Melvin Wrenn Road.

Ruth Hicks

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Ruth Deen Hicks, 87, of 6384 N.C. Hwy. 86 South, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at Brookshire Nursing Center.

Born in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Sam Cobb and Eugenia Cook Cobb.

She was married icon to Willie Thomas Hicks, who predeceased her.

She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Muriel Lee Briggs of Daytona Beach, Fla., Willie Catherine Wood of Panama City Beach, Fla. and Jennie Hicks Kimbro of Durham, N.C.; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church with the Rev. William Chappel officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at Marley Funeral Home.

Jessie Leon Fowler

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Jessie Leon Fowler, 65, of 112 Field St., died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, at Annie Penn Hospital.

Born in Ruffin N.C., he was the son of Eugene Fowler and Ruth Alice Dabbs Fowler.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was retired from Smith Heating and Air.

Survivors include two daughters, Janice Fowler of Alabama and Donna Fowler of Lexington; two brothers, Noble Felix Fowler and Eugene T. Fowler, both of Reidsville; three sisters, Beulah Rork of Johnson City, Tenn., Gladys Buck of Reidsville and Lexie Garner of Greensboro; a fiance, Betty Benefield of Reidsville; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Wilkerson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Reidlawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Stebbin Short

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Stebbin Mitchell Short, 66, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 19, 1933, he was the son of Henry Short and Mildred Carter Short.

He was formerly married icon to Norma Jean Henderson Short.

He was a native of Halifax County and was educated in the public schools of Halifax County.

Survivors include two daughters, Vanessa Winstead and Angela Short, both of Yanceyville; two sons, Donald Short and Larry Short, both of Semora; three sisters, Sheridan Stewart of Yanceyville, Queen Yarbourgh of Norfolk, Va., and Lou Fannie of Leasburg, Va.; one brother, Weldon Short of Yanceyville; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Olive Baptist Church, Semora, with the Rev. P.D. Medley officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A viewing will be held noon-8 p.m. today at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel.

The family will receive friends at 13692 N.C. Hwy 119N, Semora.

Lessie Thomas

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Lessie P. Thomas, 91, of 287 VFW Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, at her residence.

Mrs. Thomas was born in Patrick County. She retired from Dan River Inc. after 39 years of service. She was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church in Danville.

She had made Reidsville her home six years ago when she moved in with her daughter. Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her husband, William Mason Thomas, in 1980.

She is survived by one son, William Kenneth Thomas and wife Lucy, both of Danville; one daughter, Francis T. Jones and husband Wilbert C. Jones of Reidsville; one sister, Doris Carr of Danville; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Danville. Burial will be in Schoolfield Cemetery in Danville.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Wilkerson Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Ettar Williams

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Ettar Barnes Williams, 83, of 2101 S. Scales St. Apt 1A, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, in Morehead Hospital, Eden.

Born Jan. 3, 1914, in Lancaster, S.C., she was the daughter of Richard Barnes and Mary Benson Barnes.

She was married icon to Charlie Williams, who predeceased her.

She worked at Winslow Hospital for many years before retirement.

Survivors include two daughters, Julia Holt of Reidsville and Vivian W. Inge of Washington, D.C.; a son, Charles Williams of Danville, Va.; two brothers, Willie Junior Barnes and Jesse Barnes, both of Lancaster.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Creek AME Zion Church, 5719 Mount Carmel Road with the Rev. Roosevelt Alexander, Heath Spring, S.C. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A viewing will be held 6-8 p.m. today at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home, Danville. At other times the family will receive friends at 115 Hamilton St.

Barbara Zimmerman

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Barbara Austin Zimmerman, 66, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, at her residence.

Born April 5, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Wade Austin and Gladys Earles Austin Mayberry.

She was formerly married icon to Wilbert Monroe Zimmerman Jr.

She lived in Richmond, Va., prior to moving to the Providence commnity in 1996. She retired after 27 years of service from Phillip Morris Tobacco where she worked as inspector. She served as secretary for the Bakers, Confectionary and Tobacco Workers Union Local 203. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include one son, Michael M. Zimmerman of Providence; and one sister, Cathrine A. Royster of Danville, Va.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. today in Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Robert L. Vermillion officiating.

Ruth Slade

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Ruth S. Slade, 67, of the Suncrest Apartments, 1525 Main St., died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 1, 1931, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Nathaniel Slade and Ronnie Fuller Slade.

Survivors include two sisters, Doris Gwynn of Yanceyville and Mary C. Slade of Danville, Va.; two brothers, William Slade of Fort Washington, Md., and Herbert Slade of Yanceyville.

The funeral will be conducted 2:30 p.m. Sunday from Sassafras Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. C.E. Bigelow officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence of Doris Gwynn, 105 Melvin Wren Road, Yanceyville.

Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
