James Russell

BLANCH, N.C. - James Thomas Russell, 80, of 847 Blanch Road, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 13, 1918, in Caswell County, he was the son of Alvis Russell and Ida Bell Graves Russell.

He was married icon to Alene G. Russell, who survives.

He was a member of Red Hill Baptist Church, where he was a deacon. He also sang in the male chorus, senior choir, and attended Sunday school.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a retired employee of Dan River Inc.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one stepson, the Rev. Willie J. Toomer of Danville; one stepdaughter, Irma Bennett of Danville; and several stepgrandchildren.

A funeral will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Red Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Gregory Hopkins officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A viewing will be held 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at Fulton Funeral Home in Yanceyville.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Ryland Farmer

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - S. Ryland Farmer, 79, of 1433 Foster Road, died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, at the Brian Nursing Center in Yanceyville.

He was born in Danville, Va., on July 9, 1919, to the late Samuel Ellis Farmer and Ada Lea Farmer. He was preceded in death by his sister, Lennis F. Mallers.

He received his early education in the Caswell County public schools and attended Guilford College and North Carolina State University. He was a faithful member of Prospect United Methodist Church and served as chairman of the administrative board from 1962 to 1991. In 1962, he retired as chief of quality control at Fairchild Hiller Aircraft Corp. From 1963 to 1989, he was owner and operator of Caswell Motor Co. Inc.

From 1962 to 1994, he served as chairman of the Caswell County planning board and was instrumental in the construction of the Country Line Creek Watershed Project. In 1983, he was honored by Caswell County with the naming of a water project as the S.R. Farmer Lake. He also served as a member of the North Carolina Private Industry Council under governors Jim Hunt and Jim Martin. In 1984, he was named North Carolina Watershed Man of the Year. He was honored with the Piedmont Triad Council of Governments distinguished service award in 1977 and 1983. He also received the 1980 governor's volunteer award, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 1984 and the 1992 capitol citation award.

He was a member of the Yanceyville Rotary Club, Caswell County Farm Bureau, North Carolina Automobile Dealers Association, National Automobile Dealers Association, Ford Dealer Council, Air Force Association, Peagus Club, Caswell Brotherhood Lodge No. 11, and Amran Temple Shrine Club. He also served as a local director of Wachovia Bank and Trust Co.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah D. Farmer of the home; a son, R. Lee Farmer and his wife, Elizabeth M. Farmer, of Yanceyville; his daughter, Sarah F. Hensley and husband Michael Hensley of Salisbury; his grandsons, Joshua P. Farmer of Raleigh, Cameron L. Farmer of Winston-Salem, Samuel M. Farmer of Yanceyville; and a brother, Marvin N. Farmer of Blanch.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Prospect United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jack Ruth officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Marley Funeral Home in Yanceyville.

Hurd Smith

PELHAM, N.C. - Hurd R. Smith, 85, of 300 Elvin Durham Road, died early Friday morning, Feb. 12, 1999, in Vencor Hospital, Greensboro.

Born Jan. 1, 1914, in Rockingham County, he was a son of Sam Coates Smith and Alice Mason Smith.

Since 1942 he had lived in Pelham, where he was a farmer. He worked for P.L. Anderson as a carpenter. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include four children, 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by three children, five brothers, three sisters and one grandchild.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday from Mount Carmel United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Arnold Smith and the Rev. Billy Melton officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home, Danville, Va., and at other times at the residence of his granddaughter, Judy Dalton, at 528 Red Marshall Road.

Maggie Finney

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Maggie Bray Minter Martin Finney, 90, formerly of Wilson Road, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, at the Brian Center in Eden.

A native of Axton, Va., she was the daughter of John and Callie Eanes Bray.

She was a longtime resident of Reidsville. A charter member of New Life Church, she was retired from the dietary department of Annie Penn Hospital.

Survivors include two sisters, Bessie Carter and Susie Hundley; five grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by husbands Ernest Minter, Raymond Martin and William Finney and her children, Virginia Minter Bailey and Ernest Lloyd Minter.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Bray Family Cemetery, Axton.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Wilkerson Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of Larry Bailey, 178 Meador Lake Road.

Martha Harmon

EDEN, N.C. - Martha "Belle" Woodall Harmon, 83, of 1206 Carolina Ave., died Saturday afternoon, Feb. 13, 1999, at her home.

Born in Henry County, Va., she was the daughter of Samuel George and Hallie Hankins Woodall.

She was a member of Draper Christian Church. She was retired from Fieldcrest Mills and was a member of Ladies Love Circle.

Survivors include two sisters, Helen W. Macy of Eden and Ruth W. Payne of Danville, Va.; and one brother, Nelson Woodall of Eden.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Draper Christian Church. Burial will be in Overlook Cemetery.

Fair Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Timothy Willis

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Timothy Brooks Willis, 40, of 2144 Seamster Road, died early Saturday morning, Feb. 13, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for two and a half years.

Born July 8, 1958, in Danville, Va., he was a son of Jesse James Willis and Joan Arnold Willis.

He spent most of his life in the Seamster Road community of Caswell County. He was employed in construction work and was of the Pentecostal faith.

Survivors, in addition to his mother of the residence, include two sons, Timothy Willis and Joshua Willis, both of Danville; a brother, Christopher J. Willis of Providence; a sister, Susan Willis Testerman of Danville.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. today in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Mark Moore, the Rev. Clifton Minter and the Rev. Bennett Shelton officiating.

The family will be at the residence. Swicegood Funeral Home in Danville is in charge of arrangements.

George Ray Sr.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - George W. Ray Sr., 81, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, in a local health care facility.

A native of Ocala, Fla., he was the son of Clide F. Ray and Hattie Smith Ray.

He had lived in Asheville since 1965, having moved from Danville, Va., and he was retired from Sayles Bleachery as finishing supervisor. He was a member of First Baptist Church, and he was a volunteer at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Oteen. He was a member of the V.A. Hospital Western North Carolina Laryngectomy Association.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Nettles Ray; two sons, George Ray Jr. of Charlottesville, Va., and Randy Ray of Asheville; two daughters, Jan Banks of Asheville, Ann Hemminger of Springfield, Va.; a sister, Esther McClintock of Ventura, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Western North Carolina State Veterans' Cemetery with Chaplain James Sams officiating.

Morris Funeral Home in Asheville is in charge of arrangements.

Allen Cromwell

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Allen Luther Cromwell, 98, of 2076 Highway 158 west, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, at Annie Penn Hospital in Reidsville.

Born April 24, 1900, in Fredericksburg, Md., he was the son of Samuel Cromwell and Elizabeth Rippin Cromwell.

He was married icon to Lillian Francis Cromwell.

He was owner and operator of two restaurants, was a welter weight boxer, black belt karate, teacher, preacher and taxidermist. He was owner of Valley Pest Control for 25 years, and also operated a trucking company. He was a tree farmer and also raised fishing bait, rabbits and escargot snails. He was of the Seventh-day Adventist faith.

Survivors include two daughters, Wanda Cromwell Johnson of Forsyth, Mont., and Lucille Cromwell Shaw of Cannonsburg, Pa.; two sons, Allen L. Cromwell Jr. of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., and Charles (Sonny) Dunn of Danville, Va.; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at Lively Stone Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Michael Kent officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at Marley Funeral Home in Yanceyville.

Julius Moore

PELHAM, N.C. - Julius "Dood" Moore, 79, of 10630 N.C. Highway 700, died Monday afternoon, Jan. 18, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after four years of declining health.

Born Nov. 26, 1919, in Rockingham County, he was the son of Julius Levi Moore and Ora Lemmon Moore.

He was married icon to Thelma Geraldine Grant Moore, who survives.

He had spent most of his life in Mayfield community of Rockingham County, where he was a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church. He worked in maintenance as a supervisor for Dan River Inc. before retiring after 38 years of service.

In addition to his wife, of the residence, survivors include two sons, Dennis A. Moore of N.C. Highway 700, and Rodney L. Moore of Ruffin, N.C.; two brothers, Johnny L. Moore of Pelham and Alton L. Moore of Danville; three sisters, Ila Moore Bray, Carrie Moore Barber, and Annie Moore Cox, all of Pelham; and three grandchildren.

He was predeceased by four brothers, Clarence Moore, Bud Moore, Jackie Moore and Dickie Moore.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Loy Kennedy officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence in the Mayfield community.

Odessa Lipford

RUFFIN, N.C. - Odessa Pryor Lipford, 75, of 8971 N.C. 700, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born April 29, 1923, in Rockingham County, she was the daughter of Willie Lester and Mollie Blackwell Pryor.

She was a former teacher in Rockingham County, a cosmetologist and a homemaker. She was a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church, where she served on the administrative board. She was predeceased by her first husband, Paul Bennett Early Sr.

Survivors include her husband, James Curtis Lipford of the home; her daughter, Rhonda Early Walsh of Reidsville; a son, Paul Bennett Early Jr and his wife, April Early of Stoneville; two grandchildren, Shelton Pryor Early and Paul Bennett Early III, also of Stoneville; three sisters, Inez Pruitt of Ruffin, Mary Hill Vaughn of Reidsville, and Dorothy Collie of Ringgold, Va.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. today at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park, Danville, Va.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hickory Grove United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 82, Pelham.

Ealyse Foushee

ROXBORO, N.C. - Ealyse Barker Foushee, 74, of 110 White Oak Drive, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, at her home.

Born June 22, 1924, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Walter Rose Barker and Rosa Bell Bray.

She was married icon to Merritt Foushee, who predeceased her.

Survivors include three brothers, Lawrence Barker of Semora, Bob Barker of Chatham, Va., and Walter Barker of Richmond, Va.; and one sister, Margaret B. Walters of Danville, Va.

A graveside funeral service will be held 2 p.m. at Person Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Norma Walters offciating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Brooks & White Funeral Home.
