Harry Boswell, Sr.

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Harry Lee Boswell Sr., 64, of 457 New Walters Mill Road, died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after being taken to the hospital on Saturday evening. He had been in declining health for the past 10 years.

Born Feb. 28, 1935, in Caswell County, N.C., he was the son of Glenn Boswell Sr. and Carrie Guthrie Boswell.

He was married icon March 21, 1953, to Doris Shirley Russell Boswell, who survives.

He spent most of his life in the Providence community of Caswell County, N.C., where he was a volunteer fireman for the Providence Volunteer Fire Department. He was of the Baptist Faith and a member of the T.L.C. Bowling League from 1990-1998. He was a farmer, worked for Dan River Inc., operated Harry's Grocery Store and was an employee of B&B Garage Doors until taken ill.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Terry Boswell of Blanche, N.C. and Harry Lee Boswell Jr. of Providence; two daughters, Vickie B. Rogers of Virginia Beach, and Doris B. Hamlet of Providence; one brother, Henry Boswell of Providence; four sisters, Ruth B. Hobbs and Frances B. Gammon, both of Providence, and Josie B. Kegley of Beverly, Ohio, and Vestie B. Barbour of Danville, Va.; 11 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Floral Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Wayne Wallace officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Mabel Herndon

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Mabel Lee Boswell Herndon, 84, formerly of N.C. 62 South, died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at White Oak Manor.

Born in White Oak Manor, she was the daughter of William Burl Boswell and Swannie Walker Boswell.

She was married icon to John Edmond Herndon, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church for 37 years and was a homemaker.

Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Charles of Danville, Va., and Brenda Winningham of Burlington; one brother, Staley Boswell of Yanceyville; four sisters, Velira Madren and Gertrude Rice, both of Burlington, Eva Fitch and Swannona Oakley, both of Yanceyville; and three grandchildren.

In additon to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Claude Boswell and Preston Boswell and one sister, Erma Sutton.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church with the Elder Wallis Smith officiating. A viewing will be held 30 minutes prior to the funeral. Burial will be in Bush Arbor Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at Lowe Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of Brenda Winningham, 518 Country Club Drive, Burlington.

Rosa Gatewood

LEASBURG, N.C. - Rosa Ferguson Daniel Gatewood, 84, of 143 Frank Smith Road, died Thursday, April 1, 1999, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.

Born in Halifax County, Va., she was the daughter of James A. Ferguson and Alice Lee Murray Ferguson.

She was a member of Old Mill Church in Kentuck, Va.

Survivors include two daughters, Rachel Watlington of Yanceyville and Lorraine Smith of Leasburg; three sons, Henry Daniel, Thomas Daniel and Lenwood Daniel, all of Gatewood; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Hallie Newcomb and Cardie Barbour; and two brothers, Jessie Ferguson and Matthew Ferguson.

A funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Hooper Funeral Home in Yanceyville with the Elder Jamie Tucker officiating. Burial will be at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Pelham.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Clitus Hamlett

ASHEBORO, N.C. - Clitus James Hamlett, 75, of 2569 Millboro Road, Lot 9, Franklinville, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at his home.

A native of Surry County, he was a member of Glory Bound Baptist Church of Randleman. He was retired from J.P. Stevens after 35 years.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine Wilson Hamlett of the home; one daughter, Margie Cox of Franklinville; four sons, Clarence James Hamlett of Denton, Charlie Ray Hamlett of Asheboro, Clitus Edward Hamlett of Midlothian, Texas, and John Sherman Hamlett of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Dora Burcham of Randleman; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. today at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, Asheboro, by the Rev. Bruce Johnson. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the funeral home until 9 p.m.

Jimmy Morrison Jr.

RALEIGH, N.C. - Jimmy Lee Morrison Jr., 29, of 52 Magnolia Drive, formerly of Chatham, died Sunday, March 29, 1999, at Duke University Medical Center.

Born Nov. 3, 1969, in Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of Jimmy Lee Morrison Sr. and Mary Oakes Robinson, who survive.

He was married icon to Marrion A. Morrison, who survives.

He was a member of St. Paul Outreach Center, a veteran of the United States Navy. He was employed by Ohio Casualty Insurance Company.

In addition to his parents of Chatham, Va., and wife, survivors include one daughter, Desiree M. Morrison of Norfolk, Va.; three brothers, Devery L. Jackson and Devonte D. Jackson, both of Chatham and Michael Clark of Greensboro; two sisters, Jada J. Morrison and Destiny L. Morrison, both of Chatham; stepfather Lee Robinson of Chatham; maternal grandparents Sam Bo Stone and Mattie Stone of Chatham; and paternal grandmother, Mattie Morrison of Chatham.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Outreach Center with the Bishop Walter Anderson officiating. Interment will be in Hill Crest

Burial Park with military rites by the Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 4165 and D.A.V. Chapter No. 46 of Altavista, Va.

The family will receive friends at the residence of the parents, 1249 Beverly Heights Road, Chatham.

Howerton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charlie Scearce Jr.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Command Sergeant Major Charlie Carter Scearce Jr., 61, of 5121 Pala Verde Drive, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

He was married icon to Betty Crawford Scearce, who survives.

He was an Army Veteran of the Vietnam war. He retired from the third 82nd Brigade Airborne Division as a Command Sergeant Major with the United States Army after 27 years of service. He was awarded the Air Medal, Bronze Star, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, the Legion of Merit and the Combat Infantry Medal.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Charlie C. Scearce, III of Holden Beach; one daughter, Catherine S. Page of Leavenworth, Kan.; and four grandchildren.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake with the Chaplain Steve Cantrell officiating. Full military honors will be conducted.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home.

James Cook

BLANCH, N.C. - James Calvin Cook, 78, of 653 Blanch Road, died Sunday, April 4, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health for several months.

Born March 9, 1921, in Caswell County, he was the son of William Preston and Annie Vernon Cook.

He was a member of Purley United Methodist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a retired rural mail carrier and a salesman for Nationwide Insurance Co. and member of VFW Post 7316 and American Legion Post 89. He attended Caswell County Schools and Elon College and graduated from Capital Radio Engineering Institute in Washington.

Survivors include his wife Helen Swann Cook of the home; three sons, James Arthur Cook of Charleston, S.C., Marcus Swann Cook of Mebane and Bernard Calvin Cook of Blanch; two brothers, Thurman Cook of Yanceyville and Billy Cook of Graham; and six grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Purley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Floyd Morrow officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery with military rights.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Marion C. Barts and Mary C. Henderson; and five brothers, Lynwood Cook, Woodrow Cook, Edd Cook, John Cook and Eugene Cook.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Hooper Funeral Home in Yanceyville and at other times as the residence.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Purley United Methodist Church c/o Ada Pleasant, 4371 Old Highway 86 North, Blanch, N.C. 27212.

Robert White

PELHAM, N.C. - Robert E. White, 64, of 173 Lovelace Road, died Saturday, April 3, 1999, at his residence.

Born May 26, 1934, in Tioga County, Pa., he was the son of Harry White and Laura Butler White.

He was married icon to Dorthy A. White, who survives.

He was retired from Universal Forest Products in Auberndale, Fla. He was a member of Eloise Methodist Church in Eloise, Fla., and Shady Grove United Methodist Church in Providence.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include four daughters, Annetta Miles of Colorado, Marsha White of Pennsylvania, Bobbie White of Chatham, Va., and Penny Myers of Pelham; two brothers, George White and France White of Pennsylvania; two sisters, Nellie Dibble and Margaret Babcock, both of Pennsylvania; 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Shady Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rufus Buckner officating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Lucille Burton

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Lucille Little Burton, 86, of 1330A Seminole Drive, died Sunday, April 4, 1999 at Cone Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 16, 1912, in Durham County, she was the daughter of Lafayette L. Little and Fannie Starnes Little.

She was married icon to Floyd Hunter, who predeceased her.

She lived most of her life in Greensboro and Burlington. She was of the Presbyterian faith.

Survivors include two sisters, Fay L. Neville of Burlington and LeVonda L. Athey of Danville, Va.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. today at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Darrell Campbell officiating.

The family will receive friends at 12468 Halifax Road, Java, Va.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lillian Coleman

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Lillian Gammon Coleman, 77, of Providence, N.C., died at her residence Monday afternoon, April 5, 1999, after declining in health for three years.

Mrs. Coleman was born in Caswell County, N.C., on May 20, 1921, a daughter of the late Walter S. Gammon and Dessie Strader Gammon.

She was predeceased by her husband, D. Custer Coleman.

Mrs. Coleman had lived in Providence for the past three years after spending most of her life in Danville. She worked for Dan River, Inc. for 35 years and attended the First Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Nancy C. Moss of Roanoke, Ala. and one grandson, David C. Moss of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, Oscar Gammon of Prospect Hill, N.C. and two sisters, Louise Wells of Danville, Va. and Kathryn Hoyle of Palm Coast, Fla.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock from the Swicegood Chapel with the Rev. Joe Beck officiating. Interment will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday night from 7:00 until 8:30 o'clock.

Elizabeth Moschler

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Elizabeth Clarke Moschler, 82, of 117 Old Durham Road, died Monday, April 5, 1999, at Countryside Manor in Stokesdale, N.C.

Born May 3, 1916, in Essex County, she was the daughter of John Thomas Clarke and Carrie Elizabeth Chinault Clarke.

She was married icon Jan. 26, 1941, to William Witcher Moschler, who predeceased her.

She was a member of West End Christian Church in Danville. She worked as a secretary for Virginia Electric Power Company at that location before her marriage. She lived for many years in Blacksburg, where her husband was a faculty member of Virginia Tech.

Survivors include one daughter, Frances Elizabeth Heard of Chapel Hill; one son, William W. Moschler Jr. of Knoxville, Tenn.; and one sister Beulah Clark LeFoe of Woodford, Va.; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Claude Bailey officiating.
