Leon Matherly
PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Leon Anderson Matherly, 62, of 2904 Bertha Wilson Road, died Thursday, April 15, 1999, at his residence.
Born Nov. 29, 1936, in Chatham, Va., he was the son of Leroy Matherly and Violet Gay Matherly Reynolds.
He was married
to Frances Spivey Matherly, who survives.
He was of the Baptist faith and served in the United States Navy. He was a retired service station worker.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter, Pamela Gay Matherly of Richmond, Va.; one son, Mark Anthony Matherly of Danville, Va.; two brothers, Latne Gene Matherly and Garland Frances Matherly, both of Yanceyville; and one grandchild.
He was predeceased by one brother, Cecil Matherly.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Community Baptist Church with Pastor Mark Smith and Wayne Jones officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his brother Latne Matherly, 1575 Main St., Yanceyville.

Frances Melton
BURLINGTON, N.C. - Ella Frances Coggins Hammack Melton, 81, formerly of Huntington Road, died Sunday, April 18, 1999, after several months of failing health, in Alamance Regional Medical Center.
Born in Northhampton County, she was the daughter of Columbus and Inez Adams Coggins.
She was married
to Harry Charlie Melton, who predeceased her.
A member of Burlington Church of Christ, she was retired from Annedeen Hosiery Mill.
Survivors include one son, Joseph "Joe" Hammack of Warriorsmark, Pa; one sister, Ollie Mae Taylor of Southern Pines; and three grandchildren.
She was predeceased by three sisters, Ida Davis, Ruby Penwell and Elizabeth Coggins; and four brothers, J.E. Coggins, F.C. Coggins, Filmore Coggins and James Coggins.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Hostetter officiating. Entombment will be in Alamance Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Irene Taylor, 229 Engleman Ave., Burlington.
Robert Rimmer
HURDLE MILLS, N.C. - Robert Larry Rimmer, 51, of 925 Hawkins Loop Road, died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at Triangle Hospice of the Meadowlands, in Hillsborough.
Born in Durham County, he was the son of Samuel Garland and Nancy Hawkins Rimmer.
He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of Somerset Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Burnett Rimmer of the residence; one daughter, Kimberley Denise Rimmer of the residence, one son, Robert Larry Rimmer Jr. of the residence; four brothers, Coleman Rimmer of Rougemont, the Rev. Alfred Rimmer of South Boston, Va., Leon Rimmer of Hurdle Mills, and Chesley Rimmer of Bennett; three sisters, Barbara Jean Gray of Roxboro, Lettie Sharp of Lake Waccamaw, and Nancy Rogers of Mebane; and two stepgrandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Somerset Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenny Dubnick, the Rev. Alfred Rimmer, the Rev. Coley Rimmer, and the Rev. Lonnie Bell officiating. Burial will be in Wheeler's Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Brooks & White Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Jimmy and Angola Gray, 936 Hawkins Loop Road.
Rebecca Motley
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Rebecca W. Motley, 77, of 2524 Parks Spring Road, died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at Pine Hill Rest Home.
Born June 27, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of David Williams and Lottie White.
She was married
to Allen Motley, who predeceased her.
She was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church, United Order of Tents, and Usher Board. She was employed at Pine Hills Rest Home as a cook.
Survivors include four daughters, Margaret Hairston of Ruffin, Alice Hill of Washington, Doris Chapman of Silver Springs, Md., and Zettie Jones of Pelham; one son, Will Arthur Motley of Pelham; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Shady Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Stacey L. Frazier officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m. today at Beavers Funeral Home Chapel and at other times at the residence.
Leona Roark
SALISBURY, N.C. - Leona Shelton Roark, 80, of 2006 Robin Road, died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at Rowan Regional Medical Center after being ill for five weeks.
Born March 8, 1919, in Greensboro, she was the daughter of James Fuller Shelton and Hassie Glenn Shelton.
She graduated from Spencer High School and attended the School of Nursing at Watts Hospital in Durham. A homemaker, she earlier was employed at a drug store in Spencer, the Newsome Jewelry Store and Roakes Grocery in Salisbury.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Salisbury, the Dorcus Sunday school class and the Margaret White Circle and was a former choir member and pianist.
She played the organ at Trinity Baptist Church in Spencer for 10 years. She was a long time member of the Tuesday Afternoon Bridge Club, former member of the Milford Hills Lioness Club and delivered Meals on Wheels for four years.
On June 11, 1939, she was married
to Jack S. Roark Sr., formerly of Danville, Va., who survives.
In addition to her husband, survivors include one son, Jack S. Roark Jr. of Lewisburg, W. Va.; one daughter, Mrs. Billy "Pat R." Payne of Salisbury; five grandchildren; one step-grandchild; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Summersett Memorial Chapel with Dr. Phillip A. Cooley, senior minister of the First Baptist Church of Salisbury, and the Rev. Tom Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Rowan Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Summersett Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Robert Satterfield
BURLINGTON, N.C. - Robert "Bob" Wayne Satterfield, 61, of 4434 Route 62, died Saturday at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital after six weeks of declining health.
Born in Halifax County, Va., he was the son of Edward Fleming Satterfield and Rosa Rattler Satterfield. He was married
to Patricia Ann Martin Satterfield, who survives.
Satterfield co-owned and operated Graham Electric Company. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
An avid golfer, he was a member of Indian Valley Golf Course. He also belonged to Burlington American Legion Post No. 63, the Electrical Contractors Association, the Alamance County Homebuilders Association, and the Burlington Jaycees. He graduated from the Dale Carnegie Course.
Satterfield was a member of First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by a daughter, Janice Marie Satterfield of Burlington; three sons, Kenneth Leo Satterfield of Burlington, Michael Wayne Satterfield of Burlington, and Douglas Glenn Satterfield of Mebane; a sister, Mary S. Childrey of Hampton, Va.; three brothers, Ralph E. Satterfield of Danville, Va., Walter B. Satterfield of South Boston, Va., and Philip A. Satterfield of South Boston; and two grandsons.
Satterfield was predeceased by a sister, Martha S. Russell, and three brothers, John E. Satterfield, Morrel O. Satterfield and Leo W. Satterfield.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The Rev. Tim Robinson will officiate.
The family will be at the Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and at other times they will be at the residence.
Virginia Apple
REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Virginia Lane Apple, 90, of 3711 Ashland Road, Caswell County, N.C., died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at her residence.
Born in Lenoir County, she was the daughter of Issac Lane and Jane Fields Lane.
She was married
to John Calvin Apple, who predeceased her.
She lived in the Ashland Road community most of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Kinston. She attended Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church and Lick Fork Primitive Baptist Church for many years. She was a graduate of Lenoir High School and a graduate of Kinston Business College.
Survivors include three daughters Jeannine A. Hodges and Bonnie A. Robertson, both of Reidsville, and Cherry A. Pointer of Semora, N.C.; one sister Nina L. Hill of Kinston; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers Bruce Land and Jack Lane and one sister Celess Barts.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Citty Funeral Home Chapel with the Elder Wallis Smith officiating. Burial will be in Apple Cemetery on Ashland Road.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
Julia Oakley
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Julia Hicks Oakley, 88, formerly of 311 West Main St., died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at Oakes Nursing Home, Winston Salem, N.C.
Mrs. Oakley was born July 18, 1910, in Danville, Va., the daughter of William R. Hicks and Mattie Greeson Hicks.
She was married
to P.W. Oakley, Sr., who predeceased her in 1964.
Mrs. Oakley was a member of College Park Baptist Church.
She is survived by a son, P.W. "Bud" Oakley, Jr. and his wife Polly Oakley of Winston Salem, N.C.; three grandsons, David Oakley of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Howard Kellam and his wife Tracy Kellam of Richmond, Va., Steven Kellam and his wife Sherri Kellam of California; and one great grandson, Dustin Kellam of Richmond, Va.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, April 29, 1999, 11:00 a.m. at Mountain View Cemetery. Rev. James Hewett will be conducting the service.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 28, 1999, 7-8:30 p.m. at Townes Funeral Home.
Jo An Dean
PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Jo An Wright Dean, 53, formerly of Tazewell, Va., died Monday, April 26, 1999, at a Hickory, N.C. hospital.
Born Jan. 4, 1946, in Tazewell, Va., she was the daughter of John W. Wright and Lena Neal Wright.
She was married
to Kenneth Jeffery Dean, who survives.
She was a member of the Oxford Baptist Church. She was postmaster for the United States Postal Service in Providence.
In addition to her husband, survivors include one daughter Lena Sigmon of Claremont, N.C.; two sons, Mike Dean of Conover, N.C. and Kenneth Dean of Charlotte, N.C.; three sisters, Evelyn Kinder of Hickory, Mary Sue Vogt of Erie, Pa., and Charlotte Whitesell of Tazewell, Va.; four brothers Clyde Wright of Manassas, Va., James A. Wright of Bel Aire, Md., John A. Wright of Erie, Pa., and Ronnie Wright of Tazewell, Va.; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Pamela Wright.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Peery and St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va., with the Rev. Joel A. Frye and the Rev. Bobby Langston officiating. Burial will be in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va.

Gladys Sides
SALISBURY, N.C. - Gladys Bivens Sides, 80, of 1509 Parkview Circle, died Wednesday, April 28, 1999, at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born Feb. 15, 1919, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Eugene Mortimer Bivens and Gaiety Mae Newman Bivens.
She was married
to Frank Edwin Sides, who survives.
She was a homemaker and a professional seamstress working in the home.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Salisbury, and the Christian Women's Club.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters Toby S. Wilson and Wanda S. Bradshaw, both of Salisbury; one brother, Clinton Bivens of Danville, Va.; two sisters, Doris B. Coleman of Danville, Va., and Nona B. Smith of Burlington; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at City Memorial Park, Salisbury, with the Dr. Phillip A. Cooley, officiating.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury.
