Grover Creech Jr.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Grover Washington Creech Jr., 81, of 3206 Connecticut Ave., died Friday, April 30, 1999, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte after several months of declining health.

Born in Carabus County, N.C., he was the son of Grover Washington and Agnes Talbert Creech.

He was married icon to Irene Hunter Creech, who died Jan. 7, 1997.

He worked for Burlington Industries as personnel director, at the Plaid Mill and Greensboro Weaving, in Greensboro, N.C., the sales department with Garlock Packing Co. of Pa. and in sales with Southern Pump Co. in Charlotte. He was a graduate of Concord High School and North Carolina State University in Raleigh. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran having entered as a commissioned officer after R.O.T.C. training at State College. He was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include two sisters, Mildred C. Kennedy of Thomasville and Frances C. Dennis of Cary; two brothers, Charles M. Creech of Marshville and Robert R. Creech of Charlotte.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Fay C. Linker.

A funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Hooper Funeral Home Chapel in Yanceyville with the Doctor Floyd Morrow officiating. Burial will be in First Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.

William "Pete" Harris

EDEN, N.C. - William "Pete" Harris, 89, of 1399 Lincoln St., died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at his home.

Funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Overlook Cemetery.

Mr. Harris was a native of Pittsylvania County, Va., and was retired from American Tobacco Co.

Surviving are a sister, Ann Scearce of Oregon Hill; sister-in-law, Igie DuBois of Eden; niece and nephew, Gilbert and Debra DuBois of Eden.

The family will be at Reynolds Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 1999, and other times at the residence.

Juanita Fitch

BURLINGTON, N.C. - Juanita Davis Fitch, 87, formerly of 2039 Lower Hopedale Road, died Saturday, May 1, 1999, at White Oak Manor after suffering from critical illness for one month.

Born in Troy, she was the daughter of Calvin Davis and Willa Cranford Davis.

She was married icon to L.I. Fitch, who predeceased her.

She was retired from the textile industry and was of the Baptist faith. She was a member of the Women of the Moose in Burlington.

Survivors include five sons, Jeff Fitch of Issaquh, Wash., John "Sonny" Fitch, Darrell Fitch, Gary Fitch and Jim Fitch, all of Burlington; one daughter, Marie Fitch Canupp of Danville, Va.; three sisters, Rebecca Luther, Mildred Wiles and Virginia White, all of Asheboro; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two daughters, Judy Fitch Hunter and Cordelia Fitch and one son, Wayne Fitch.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington with the Rev. Bennie Smith and Elder Wallis Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Rich and Thompson Mortuary and at other times at the home of Jim and Gary Fitch, 2039 Lower Hopedale Road.

Earlin "Jeff" Jeffers

BLANCH, N.C. - Earlin "Jeff" Jeffers, 66, of 1071 Zimmerman Road, died Sunday, May 2, 1999, in The Brian Center Nursing Home, Yanceyville.

Born Jan. 30, 1933, in Caswell County, N.C., he was the son of the Rev. Eddie James Jeffers and Maude Mitchell Jeffers.

He was a member of Hamer Baptist Church and a retired truck driver in Columbus, Ohio, with Centrel Dry Wall Construction Company.

Survivors include four sons, Curtis Jeffers of Los Angeles, Carlin Jeffers, Timothy Jeffers and Wayne Jeffers, all of Columbus, Ohio; one daughter, Debra Jeffers of Columbus, Ohio; four brothers, Moses Jeffers of Baltimore, James Jeffers of Blanch, Joseph Jeffers of Danville, Va., Fred Jeffers of Columbus, Ohio; six sisters, Annie J. Harrelson of Blanch, Nora J. Brown of Washington, D.C., Elimara J. Pennix of Burlington, Myrtle J. Bradshaw of Dix Hill, N.Y., Mattie Jeffers of Danville, Va., and Mary J. Pace of Greensboro; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Hamer Baptist Church with the Rev. Cephus Lea officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Fulton Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Arthur Cunningham

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Arthur Cunningham, 76, of 1131 Snatchburg Road, died Sunday, May 2, 1999, at the Brian Center Nursing Care.

He was married icon to Maxine Cunningham, who survives.

Born in Halifax County, Va., he was a veteran of the United States Army and was educated in the public schools of Halifax and Person counties.

In addition to his wife, survivors include four daughters, Barbara McLaughlin and Cynthia York, both of Baltimore, Phyllis Mason of Owings Mills, Md., and JoAnn Kernodle of Durham; five sons, Arthur W. Cunningham, Jerry Cunningham, Rodney Cunningham, all of Baltimore, Henry Cunningham of Durham, and Larry Cunningham of Danville, Va.; three sisters, Suddie Sellars of Durham, Rebecca Hamlet of Washington, D.C., Caroline Graves of Clarington, Pa.; two brothers, Freddie Cunningham and Theodore Cunningham, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and 10 grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at noon Friday at the New Ephesus Baptist Church, Semora, N.C.,

Rev. Michael Harris officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

A viewing will be held noon - 8 p.m. today at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Lessie Jordan

DURHAM, N.C. - Lessie S. Jordan, 89, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at Durham Regional Hospital.

Born in Roxboro, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Henry A. Stanfield and Myrtle R. Stanfield.

She was employed with Dan River Inc. for 11 years. She moved to Durham in 1932, and worked for the American Tobacco Company for 32 years. She was a former member of Holloway Street Baptist Church and later joined First Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include one daughter, Helen J. Lewis of Durham; two sisters, Mary L. Wells and Frances Cosgrove, both of Danville, Va.; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Clements Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bennie Smith officiating. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at 2125 Sunset Ave., Durham.

Daniel Payne

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Daniel Jackson Payne, 86, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.

He was married icon to Lora Payne.

He was a member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church and retired from Burlington Industries. He was a veteran of World War II.

In addition to his wife of Greensboro, survivors include one step-daughter, Carolyn Coble of McLeansville; one son, David Payne of Raleigh; three sisters, Clarice Arnall and Frances Gammon, both of Danville, Va., and Zadie Gilbert of Eden; two step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Chapel with the Rev. Aaron Moss officiating. Burial will be in Westminister Gardens.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Rudolph Nelson

PROSPECT HILL, N.C. - Rudolph Nelson, 80, of 15386 Hwy. 86 South, died Thursday, May 6, 1999, at the Brian Center in Yanceyville.

Born Nov. 29, 1917, in Caswell County, N.C., he was the son of Lonzy Lee Nelson and Mary Warren Nelson.

He was married icon to Frances Carver Nelson, who survives.

He was raised by his grandparents Franklin Rudolph Warren and Ida Warren.

He was a retired farmer, post master and mail carrier for 38 years. He coached the Prospect Hill girls softball team for a number of years. He was of the Primitive Baptist faith and lived her entire life in Prospect Hill.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy Nelson and Judy W. Nelson of Prospect Hill, N.C.

He was predeceased by one brother Ralph Nelson.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Cooper Cemetery, Prospect Hill, with the Rev. Claude Harrelson officiating.

Visitation was Friday at Marley Funeral Home, Yanceyville, N.C.

The family will receive friends at the residence of his son, 12634 Hwy. 86 South, Prospect Hill, N.C.

Jessie Semones

MOUNT AIRY, N.C. - Jessie Towe Semones, 80, of 262 Mount View Drive, died Monday, May 10, 1999, at Lexington County Memorial Hospital, West Columbia, S.C.

Born Dec. 31, 1918, in Carroll County, Va., she was the daughter of Jay Fulton Towe and Lena Westmoreland Towe.

She was married icon to Paul Allen Semones, who predeceased her.

She was a homemaker and active member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Cana, Va., having been a past choir director and served on various boards in the church. She was an active member of the Cana Golden Agers and current president of the club, treasurer of the Southern Carroll Community Club in which she was also a member.

Survivors include two daughters, Dr. Jeanne Semones of Smithfield, and Susan Semones Mahnke of Simpsonville; two sons, Allen Semones of Columbia, S.C. and Richard Semones of Danville, Va.; four brothers, Hiram Towe of Cana, Harrison Towe of Mount Airy, Franklin Towe of Cana, and Ernest M. Towe of Hagerstown, Md.; a stepmother, Nettie Jackson Towe; one stepbrother Jim Jackson; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Jay Towe, Abe Towe and Buford Towe.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Howell Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Steven K. Rainey officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Frances Vaughn

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. - Frances Vaughn, 38, died Saturday, May 1, 1999, at Triangle Hospice's Inpatient Care Facility.

Born in Person County, she was the daughter of the late Shirleen Gayle Vaughn and Raymond Vaughn, who survives.

In addition to her father of Hurdle Mills, N.C., survivors include two sons, Wesley Daniel Massey Jr. of Roanoke, Va. and Daniel Wayne Massey of Providence; one brother, Roger Vaughn of Hurdle Mills; and her dear friends, Billy Jo and Connie Massey. She followed her companion of 11 years in death, Wesley Daniel Massey Sr.

A graveside service was Monday at Clement Baptist Church Cemetery in Hurdle Mills.

Lue Blackwell

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Lue Henry Barber Blackwell, formerly of Burton Chapel Road, died Thursday, May 13, 1999, in the Brian Center Nursing Home, Yanceyville.

Born Feb. 22, 1906, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Hank Barber and Ella Madden Barber.

She was married icon to James Adam "Buddie" Blackwell, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Blackwell Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

Survivors include one daughter, Pearlie Blackwell Lea of Burlington; 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Blackwell Baptist Church with the Rev. Everett Dickerson officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

A viewing will be held 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Fulton Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at her nephew, James Barber, 6910 Hwy 86 N., Providence.
