Melinda Goble Gill
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Melinda "Linda" Goble Gill, 59, of 225 B Village Lane, died Sunday, May 30, 1999, at her residence.
Funeral services will be 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 2, 1999, at First Moravian Church officiated by the reverend Graham Rights.
Interment will be at Westminster Gardens.
Linda was a native of Danville, Va., a graduate of Guilford College and a past president of the Alpha Kappa Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa.
She was retired from Guilford County schools and was employed at Plants and Answers on West Market Street.
She was a member of the North Carolina State University Wolfpack Club.
Surviving are her sons, Michael Douglas Gill of Greensboro and Hugh Allen Gill of Sunset Beach, N.C.; her mother, Ruth Goble of Danville, Va.; and her aunt, Ruby Bass of Danville. She is also survived by her fiance, Michael Baxter of Greensboro; and many other loving family members and friends.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Hanes-Lineberry, North Elm Street chapel and at other times at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Guilford County Animal Shelter, 4525 West Wendover Ave., Greensboro, N.C. 27409.
Joseph Hopkins
RICHFIELD, N.C. - Joseph Herbert Hopkins, 66, of 213 High Rock Road, died Thursday, May 27, 1999, at Hospice House of Monroe.
Born Sept. 9, 1932, in St. Louis County, Mont., he was the son of Joseph Thomas Hopkins and Elsie Harvey Hopkins.
He spent two years in the U.S. Army Combat Infantry and received a Purple Heart.
He retired from the U.S. Navy, after 22 years of service.
He was a Navy Seal. He was a member of the VFW Albemarle.
He was a member of Parker Memorial Baptist Church where he was a Sunday school teacher.
He was first married
to Johnsie Deese Hopkins, who predeceased him.
He was married
to Geraldine Saunders Hopkins, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, the Rev. Joseph S. Hopkins of Danville, Va., and Michael Hopkins of Albemarle; one daughter, Rebecca H. Cooper of New London; one sister, Lois Trost of Ocala, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.
A committal service was held 11 a.m. Monday at Hartsell Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel in Albemarle with Mr. Don Hardister officiating.
A burial at sea off of the coast of Charleston, S.C., followed
Hartsell Funeral Home of Albermarle is in charge of arrangements.
Billy Poteat
MILTON, N.C. - Billy Lee Poteat, 70, of 8627 Highway 62 North, died Sunday, May 30, 1999, at Duke University Medical Center.
He had been in declining health for several months.
Born in Caswell County, he was the son of Allie W. and Virginia Hayden Poteat.
He attended Caswell County schools and was a member Purley United Methodist Church.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served for 22 years and became a senior chief of aviation electronics.
After retiring from the Navy, he worked as an electronic engineer for the Civil Service.
He attended and graduated from several service schools related to his work in the electronic field while in the Navy.
Survivors include his wife, Audrey Earles Poteat of the residence; one daughter, Susan P. Horster of Milton; two sons, Gary Stephen Poteat of New Port, and Gregory Scott Poteat of Milton; three sisters, Jane Byrd of Danville, Va., Jeanette Turner of Blanch and Margaret Turner of Columbia, S.C.; one brother, Raymond Poteat of Yanceyville; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Purley United Methodist Church with Dr. Floyd Morrow officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery with Military Rites.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. at Hooper Funeral Home, Yanceyville, and at other time at the residence.
Fred Williamson
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Fred "Brown" Williamson Sr., formerly of 254 Church St., died Sunday, May 30, 1999, in the Brian Center Nursing Home.
Born Oct. 17, 1913, in Caswell County, he was the son of the Rev. Clem Williamson and Jennie Johnson Williamson.
He was a member of Yanceyville Missionary Baptist Church and was a retired textile worker.
He was married
to Mary Jane Totten Williamson, who predeceased him. He was also predeceased by one son, William "Bill" Totten.
Survivors include one son Fred Brown Williamson Jr. of Yanceyville; one daughter, Catherine W. Bigelow of Yanceyville; two brothers, Earnest Jones and Will Warner Williamson, both of Philadelphia; two sisters, Mary Ford and Marie Richmond, both of Yanceyville; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Yanceyville Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Cephus Lea officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Wednesday at Fulton Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Catherine Bigelow at 1033 N. Main St., Yanceyville.

Dewey East Sr.
RUFFIN, N.C. - Dewey Frank East Sr., 74, of 9460 NC Highway 700 died Wednesday, June 2, 1999 at Danville Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Caswell County and was married
to Bonnie Barber East of the residence.
He was a member of Mayfield Missionary Baptist Church and retired from Excavation Construction in Maryland.
In addition to the wife of the residence, he is survived by five sons, Curtis East of Clinton, Md., Eddie East of Chatham, Va., Donnie East of Lanham, Md., Alfred East of Cheltenham, Md., and Jake East of Greenbelt, Md.; one daughter, Janet Myers of Laurel, Md.; three sisters, Alice Holt of Woodbridge, Va., Virgia Pacana of Raleigh, N.C. and Bonnie Campbell of Lebanon, Penn.; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in the Mayfield Missionary Baptist Church.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Julia Harris
ROUGEMONT, N.C. - Julia Long Harris, 84, of 11622 Hampton Road died.
She was married
to Robert Lee Harris, who survives.
In addition to her husband, survivors include five daughters, Pauline H. Parker of Bahama, Annie H. Cooper of Cleveland, Ohio, Rosa H. Johnson of Rougemont, Mozel W. Harris of Danville, Va., and Doretha Hamidullah of Durham, N.C.; two sons, James E. Harris of Rougemont and David Lee Harris of Durham; one sister, Lillie Harris of Durham; one brother, John Long of Durham; 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at New Red Mountain Baptist Church, Rougemont, with Dr. M.O. Wallace officiating.
Burial will be in church cemetery.

Kenneth Parton
ASHEBORO, N.C. - Kenneth Wayne Parton, 59, of 603 Lincoln Ave., died Thursday, June 3, 1999, at Randolph Hospital in Asheboro.
He was married
to Kathy D. Parton, who survives.
He was a native of Danville, Va.
He was an Air Force veteran and a former driver for Royal Tours in Randleman, N.C. he was a member of Christians United in Danville.
In addition to his wife of Asheboro, survivors include one daughter, Kalyn Drew Parton of the residence; one son, Kevin Parton of Danville; one step-daughter, Bethany Lynn Salmons of Collinsville, Va.; one step-son, Joseph Benjamin Salmons IV of Collinsville; two brothers, the Rev. Larry G. Hill of Danville and Michael Hill of Liberty, N.C.; one sister, Belinda Lawson of Providence, N.C.; and one grandchild.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Edwin Moore officiating.
A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at Leemont Cemetery, Danville.

Harvey Simpson
PROVIDENE, N.C. - Harvey Lee Simpson, 70, of 358 Bill Smith Road, died Thursday, June 3, 1999, at his residence.
Born in Caswell County, he was the son of Percy W. Simpson and Bessie Griffith Simpson.
He was married
to Dorothy A. Simpson, who survives.
He attended Caswell County Schools and worked as a machinist for Dan River Inc. for many years.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in Korea.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Patricia S. Smith of Providence and one grandson, Stephen Smith.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Hooper Funeral Home Chapel, Yanceyville.
Burial will be in Schoolfield Cemetery.

Joseph Withers
RUFFIN, N.C. - Joseph Aaron Withers, 80, of 1609 Allison Road, died Wednesday, June 2, 1999, in Annie Penn Memorial Hospital, Reidsville.
Born Dec. 16, 1918, in Caswell County, he was the son of Aljournal Withers and Annie Bell Williamson Withers.
He was married
to Maggie Howard Withers, who predeceased him.
He was a member of Red Hill Baptist Church and was a self-employed farmer.
Survivors include one son, Joseph A. Withers Jr. of Reidsville; five daughters, Anne W. Parker of Urban, Ill., Alice W. Byrd of the residence, Claire Coletrane of Yanceyville, N.C., Margaret W. Cannon of Ruffin, N.C. and Sandy W. Douglas of Greensboro, N.C.; two brothers, Fred Ivan Withers of Newport News, Va. and Allie Withers of Washington D.C.; two sisters, Mildred Withers and Henrietta Withers, both of Ruffin, N.C.; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Red Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Gregory Hopkins officiating.
Burial will be in church cemetery.
A viewing will be held 2-8 p.m. today at Fulton Funeral Home.
