Casper Scruggs

WAKE FOREST, N.C. - Casper Scruggs, 80, of 2207 South Main St., died Tuesday, August 10, 1999, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

He was the son of M.B. Scruggs and Martha Scruggs. He was married icon to Marie Scruggs, who predeceased him and later to Eleyn Benfield, who also predeceased him in 1995.

He was a member of Forestville Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Debbie Hill of Wake Forest; one sister, Ester Day of Plantation, Fla.; two brothers, Marshall Scruggs of Pennville, N.J., and Neal Scruggs of Providence, N.C.; and two grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Ellen Whitley

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - Ellen Lenahan Whitley, 78, died Monday, August 9, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.

Born April 3, 1921, in County Cork, Ireland, she was the daughter of William Lenahan and Hanorah O'Sullivan Lenahan.

She was married icon to Harry Cagar Whitley, who predeceased her Sept. 11, 1984.

She was a homemaker and a devoted mother. She was a member of St. James Catholic Chuch.

Survivors include four sons, Harry Patrick Whitley of Richmond, Va., Lacey Whitley of Chesapeake, Va., Paul Whitley of Eden and William Whitley of Rockingham; nine daughters, Eileen Hall of Spartanburg, S.C., Noreen Griffith of Danville, Va.; Mary Kennon of Reidsville, Margaret Ansley, Kathleen Boone, Cecilia Wilson, Loretta Whitley, Joan Smith and Michele Whitley, all of Rockingham; one sister, Pearl Carroll of County Cork, Ireland; one brother, Liam Lenahan of London, England; 31 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church with Father Patrick Shelton officiating. Burial will be in Eastside cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today with a vigil service at 7:30 at Watson-King Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of William Whitley, 111 Chance Dr., Rockingham, N.C.

Mamie Withers

RUFFIN, N.C. - Mamie Williamson Withers, 89, of 710 Big Oak Farm Road, died Tuesday, August 10, 1999, in The Baptist Hospital, Winston Salem.

Born Nov. 15, 1910, in Caswell County, N.C., she was the daughter of Albert Williamson and Edith Graves Williamson.

She was married icon to Lawson Withers, who predeceased her.

She was a member of New Ephesus Baptist Church where she was a church secretary. She also served on the Usher Board, Missionary Circle, Ladies Auxiliary American Legion Post No. 210 and was Eastern Star No. 624.

Survivors include three sons, James Withers of Landover, Md., Willie Withers of Dale City, Va., and Wayne Withers of Indianapolis; three brothers, John L. Williamson and Willie O. Williamson, both of Yanceyville, and Norman G. Williamson of Yonkers, N.Y.; three sisters, Alice Elizabeth Withers and Edith Martin, both of Ruffin, Matoka Williamson Withers of Washington; 8 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at New Ephesus Baptist Church with the Rev. William Lee officiating. Burial will be in Red Hill Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Friday at Fulton Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Joshua Langston

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Joshua "Josh" David Langston, 7, of 203 Joneslan Trail, died Friday, August 13, 1999, at his residence.

Living in Reidsville, N.C., he was the son of David Scott Langston and Deborah Price Langston of the residence.

He lived in Reidsville all of his life. He was a second-grader and was a member of Reidsville Alliance Church.

In addition to his parents of the residence, survivors include one sister, Rachel Elizabeth Langston of the residence; maternal grandparents, Ronald Filer and Lucy Smith Price of Apopka, Fla.; paternal grandparents, Roy Mason and Nancy Jones Langston, both of Reidsville; and paternal great grandparents, R.O. "Jack" Jones Sr. and Frances Wagoner Jones, both of Reidsville.

A memorial service will be held 6 p.m. Sunday at Reidsville Alliance Church. Burial will be in Mizpah United Methodist Church cemetery.

The family will recive friends 6-8 p.m. today at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Reidsville Alliance Church, The Joshua Memorial Fund, 1300 Freeway Drive, Reidsville, N.C. 27320.

Giles Terrell

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Giles Oldham Terrell, 63, died Thursday, August 12, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center, Danville, Va., after a short illness.

Mr. Terrell was a native of Caswell County, having been born December 19, 1935, in Yanceyville, N.C. He was the son of the late Jesse Thomas Terrell and Sallie Lipscomb Jones Terrell.

He was a graduate of Bartlett Yancey High School and of High Point College, where he became a life member of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity.

He honorably served on active duty in the United States Army in Germany for two years. He was a former certified water tratment facility operator and a school teacher.

He and his brother Robert Jones Terrell were operators of Terrell Amoco in Yanceyville for eleven years.

He is survived by his brother, Robert Jones Terrell of Yanceyville; and a cousin, Jane Shelton Mosher of Greensboro.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Jessie Thomas Terrell Jr.

Funeral services will be conducted at Yanceyville United Methodist Church 4 p.m. today by the Rev. Vasser Jones and Pastor Larry Durham with interment at New Hope United Methodist Church cemetery.

Family will receive friends after commital.

Robert Gunn

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Robert Earl Gunn, 41, of 291 Church St., died Thursday, August 12, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 27, 1957, he was the son of Oliver Lewis Gunn and Margaret Hankins Gunn.

A native of Caswell County, he joined Hamer Baptist Church at an early age and was a construction worker.

His survivors include three brothers, Ronel Wayne Gunn of Boston, Earnest Lewis Gunn of Tampa, Fla., and Willie Edmonds of Reading, Penn., and five sisters, Irene Jefferies of Danville; Margaret Gunn of Cedar Grove, Mattie Gunn and Ola Gunn, both of Yanceyville, and Frances Chalmers of Brockton, Mass.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Hamer Baptist Church with the Rev. Cephus Lea officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Fulton Funeral Home and other times as his residence.

Lady Mitchell

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Lady Alice Mitchell, 102, of Yanceyville, formerly of Raleigh, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999 at the Brian Center after a lengthy illness.

Born Jan. 25, 1897 in Caswell County, she was the daughter of James Mitchell and Mary Powell Mitchell.

Mitchell was a retired stenographer with the Seaboard Railroad. She was a member of Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh.

Mitchell is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral will be held 4 p.m. Monday at Purley United Methodist Church cemetery, with the Rev. Floyd R. Morrow officiating.

Marley Funeral Home in Yanceyville is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Purley United Methodist Church, c/o Marie Riddick, 390 Bertha Wilson Road, Blanch, N.C., 27212.

Louise Moore

KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. - Louise Viccellio Moore, 72, of Apt. 14A Battleforest Apartments, died Wednesday, August 11, 1999, at Kings Mountain Hospital.

Born in Halifax County, Va., she was the daugher of Cephus Viccellio and Sadie Walker Viccellio.

She was married icon to Garnett Walton Moore Sr. who predeceased her.She was retired from Wal-Mart and was a homemaker. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Kings Mountain.

Survivors include two sons, Pete Moore of Lawndale and David of Rock Hill, S.C.; three daughters, Vickie Cowan of Odessa, Fla., Karen Bell of Kings Mountain, N.C. and Susan Moore of Shelby, N.C.; two sisters, Elizabeth Meetze of Danville and Sadie Raw Robertson of Roxboro; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sister, Suzanne Lee and Rosa Mae Russell of Roxboro, N.C.

A funeral was 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Morris Jordan officiating. Burial was at Mountain Rest Cemetery.

The family received friends from 7-9 at Harris Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of her daughter Karen Bell, 726 Oak Grove Road, Kings Mountain.

Emma Poteat

BLANCHE, N.C. - Emma Cox Poteat, 92, died Monday, August 16, 1999, at the Brian Center, Yanceyville.

Born July 18, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the daughter of Thomas Cox and Nettie Strader Cox.

She was married icon to Charlie W. Poteat, who predeceased her.

She spent most of her life in the Blanche and Providence communities of Caswell County.

She worked for Dan River Inc. and was a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church in Rockingham County.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Kent officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Swicegood Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence of her niece, Colene Boyd, 2530 Chandlers Mill Road, Pelham.
