Eva Davis

LEASBURG, N.C. - Eva Kendrick Davis, 76, of 2087 Leasburg Road, died Saturday, August 28, 1999, at her residence of an extensive illness.

Born in Chatham County, Va., she was the daughter of John H. Kendrick and Mattie Adkins Kendrick.

She was married icon to Odell J. Davis.

She was a World War II Air Force Veteran and was secretary of Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 2058 Ladies Auxilliary. She was a member of Brooksdale United Methodist Church and the church choir. She was a retired secretary of Pat Brown Lumber Co.

Survivors include one daughter, Victoria D. Webster of Timberlake; two sons, Larry J. Davis of Roxboro and Harry E. Davis of Leasburg.; one sister Avis K. Oakes of Roxboro; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 2 p.m Tuesday at Brooksdale United Methodist Church with the Rev. Chris Meyer officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Leasburg.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Strickland Funeral Home, 1341 North Main St., Roxboro is in charge of arrangements.

Lossie Johnson

EDEN, N.C. - Lossie Hazelwood Johnson, 92, of the Brian Center, 226 North Oakland, of Eden, North Carolina, died August 29, 1999, at 10 p.m. in Morehead Hospital, Eden, N.C.

Born July 25, 1907, she was the daughter of Robert Franklin Hazelwood and Pearl Hazelwood Hazelwood.

She was married icon to Harry Western Johnson, who predeceased her April 7, 1989.

Most of her life was in the Mayfield Community and had been at the Brian Center, Eden, N.C., since November of 1997. She was retired from Dan River Mills. She was a charter member and the oldest member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church in Rockingham County, N.C.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Otis Johnson and Cecelia Johnson, both of Mayfield Community, and Raymond Johnson and Erlene Johnson, both of Reidsville, N.C.; one daughter and son-in-law, Faye Lawrence and Odell Lawrence, both of Ruffin, N.C.; one sister Alice Cox of Ruffin, N.C.; three grandsons and two grand-daughters-in-law, Darrell Johnson of Reidsville, N.C., Don Johnson and Jennifer Johnson of Plantation, Fla. and Jason Lawrence and Cyndie Lawrence, both of Reidsville, N.C.; two granddaughters and one grandson-in-law, Debbie Johnson of Ruffin, N.C. and Doris Ann Kendrick and Randall, both of Ruffin, N.C.; and two great-granddaughters, Hannah Kendrick and Rachel Kendrick, both of Ruffin, N.C.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church, Rockingham, County, N.C., with the Rev. Robert E. Fritts and the Rev. Mike Harrill officiating. Burial will be in Hickory Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, Rockingham County, N.C.

The family will receive friends at the son's residence, Otis Johnson, 9438 N.C. Hwy 700, Ruffin, N.C.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Stuart Cole

DURHAM. N.C. - R.S. "Stuart" Cole, 77, of 910 Virgie St. died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, in the Veterans Administration Hospital.

Born in Hillsborough, he was the son of Charlie Cole and Bernice Cole.

He was married icon to Elsie Reid Cole, who survives.

He was a disabled veteran serving during World War II.

He was an active member and deacon of the First Wesleyan Church and a retired carpenter of Chestnutt Builders.

In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Dexter R. Cole of Tampa, Fla.; one brother, Jones Cole of Graham; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Maplewood Cemetery, Section Three, with the Rev. Noah Albarez officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday at Clements Funeral Home.

Lawrence "Preacher" Whitlow

RALEIGH, N.C. - Lawrence Douthit "Preacher" Whitlow, 75, of 9316 Foxburrow Court died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999.

Born Sept. 25, 1923, in Halifax County, Va., he was the son of Leslie Roby Whitlow and Annie Wilmouth Whitlow.

He was a veteran of the Navy serving in World War II on the USS Nunser.

He was a member of the Elks Club and the American Legion in Greensboro.

He was a retired carpenter with Talley Machinery and a member of the Shady Grove United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Deborah W. Sherrill of Raleigh; and one granddaughter.

He was predeceased by one son Kenneth Whitlow.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Shady Grove United Methodist Church, Virgilina, Va., with the Rev. Don Davidson officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home.

Richard Jokisaari

PELHAM, N.C. - Richard Eugene Jokisaari, 61, of 1528 Newnam Road, died early Friday morning September 3, 1999, at the Hospice Home, Burlington, N.C.

Born May 14, 1938, in Concord, Mass., he was the son of the late Eugene Jokisaari and Marguerite Carbary Nyholm, who survives.

He was a veteran of the Korean War. He lived in the Danville area for the past 10 years. He was employed as an auto body mechanic and machinist. He was a member of Sheldon Baptist Church.

In addition to his mother of Cape Cod, survivors include three daughters, Lisa Jokisaari of Sudbury, Mass., Laurie Jokisaari and Deborah Jokisaari Carl, both of Mesa, Ariz.; one son, Scott Jokisaari of Millis, Mass.; two sisters, Barbara Groth of Lake Whales, Fla. and Karen Pola of Oregon; and two grandchildren.

Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

'O.L.' Dunevant

BLANCH, N.C. - Ollie Lewis "O.L." Dunevant, 81, formerly of 412 Bertha Wilson Road, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, at the Brian Center in Yanceyville.

Born May 8, 1918, in Caswell County, he was the son of Alexander Lee Dunevant and Fannie Evans Dunevant.

Dunevant was a retired farmer and a member of Blanch Baptist Church.

He was married icon to Ruby Hamlett Dunevant, who predeceased him June 25, 1992.

He was predeceased by 11 sisters and brothers.

Survivors include one daughter, Marie D. Riddick of Blanch; one brother, James Dunevant of Texas; one granddaughter, Jeanne R. West of Sanford; one grandson, Euguene Riddick of Blanch; and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at Blanch Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. George Rumney officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Marley Funeral Home in Yanceyville and at other times at the residence of his daughter, 390 Bertha Wilson Road.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to Providence Fire Department and Rescue, C/O Robin Carroll, 7631 N.C. Highway 86 North, Providence, N.C., 27315.

Rev. John Owen

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Rev. John Oscar Owen, 67, formerly of Halifax County, Va., died Monday, September 6, 1999, at Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Born Jan. 28, 1932, in Halifax County, Va., he was the son of Hatcher Bailey Owen and Rena Hughes Owen.

He was married icon to Nancy Perkinson Owen.

Survivors include two sons, John Martin Owen and Mark McRobert Owen, both of Greensboro; three sisters, Bessie O. Simmons of Greensboro, Julia Jones and Gertrude Owen, both of Halifax; two brothers, Jesse Owen of Emporia, Va., and James Owen of Salem, Va.

He was predeceased by one brother, Frank Owen.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Owen Family Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Stewart officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home.

James Toney

PELHAM, N.C. - James Walter Toney, of 114 Germantown Road, died Tuesday, September 7, 1999, at Annie Penn Hospital.

She was born in Caswell County, N.C.

He was married icon to Leatha Paden Toney, who survives.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II. He resided in East Elmhurst, N.Y., for 34 years before returning to Pelham 12 years ago. While residing in New York, he was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served on the Deacon Board and as a member of the Senior Usher Board. He was also a faithful member of Gwynn's Chapel Missionary Baptist Church where he served as deacon.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one stepdaughter, Jean Price of New York; four sisters, Lizzie Price of Pelham, Viola Crisp and Nicey Brown, both of Pittsburg, and Dorothy Standfied of Baltimore; one brother, William Toney of Yanceyville, N.C.; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Gywnn's Chapel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles W. Glenn officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-7:30 p.m. Thursday at Johnson and Sons Funeral Home, Reidsville.

Josephine Hickey

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. - Josephine Ann Wyatt Hickey, 96, of 203 Daugherty St., died Tuesday, September 7, 1999, in a local hospital following a short illness.

Born Dec. 11, 1902, in Nathalie, Va., Halifax County, she was the daughter of Stephen Smith Wyatt and Mary Lena Ford Wyatt.

She was married icon to William Heap Hickey, who predeceased her April 4, 1986.

A resident of Black Mountain since 1943, she was educated at North Stanton Elementary and High School. A graduate of East Radford Teacher's College, she taught seventh grade at Spruce Pine Elementary, Spruce Pine. She was a second-grade teacher at Black Mountain Primary from 1943, until her retirement after 30 years of teaching.

She was a well known contributor to the advancement of higher education, establishing scholarships in colleges, enabling many young people to further their education. In the 1960s, she was actively involved in the progress of Black Mountain, made possible through their benevolence the installation of chimes in the tower of Black Mountain Methodist Church. She was one of the originators of the Swannanoa Valley Retired Teachers Group. She was an active member of the Black Mountain Methodist Church, where she had held various offices throughout the years of her residence in the town. She was a member and past president of the first Business and Professional Women's Club of Black Mountain.

Survivors include two nieces, Alice Hill Pruitt of Brookneal, Va., and Docia E. Hickey of Belmont; and two nephews, Samuel Hill of Nathalie, Va. and Roy Edmond Hill of Nathalie.

A funeral was held 11 a.m. Thursday at Black Mountain United Methodist Church, 101 Church St., Black Mountain, N.C., with the Rev. Gerald Collins officiating.

The family received friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.

Burial was in Spruce Pine Memorial Park.

Miller Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
