Bessie Payne
MEBANE, N.C. - Bessie W. Payne, 73, of 405 West Jackson St., died 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, at her home after years of declining health.
Born April 22, 1925, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Joel Adolphus West and Bessie Sparks West.
She was married
to Reuben H. Payne, who survives.
She was a retired employee of Melville Furniture Co. Inc., and of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Brenda P. Bright of Mebane; one sister, Brattie Gregory of North Wilkesboro; three brothers, Junior West and Dennis West, both of Greenville, and Thomas West of Burlington; and one grandchild.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Wanda Faye Payne; and one sister, Frances Aldridge.
A funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane with Chaplain Ann Matsumoto officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 2-3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence and at the residence of her daughter, Brenda Bright, 309 West Jackson St.
Louise Kushner
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Mrs. Louise D. Kushner, age 85, of Chapel Hill, died on Sept. 28, 1999.
She was married
to the late Herman B. Kushner. She is survived by her daughters, Terri K. Tyson of Chapel Hill, Pia K. Frankel of Littleton, Colorado, and Bonnie K. Brumfield of Caswell County, N.C.; her sister, Sybil D. Keller of Danville, VA.; her grandchildren; several nephews, nieces, cousins and in-laws.
A native of Pittsylvania County, VA., she lived most of her life in Danville, Va., where she was an active member of Aetz Chaim Synagogue.
A 1937 graduate of the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, she worked as a Registered Nurse at the hospital and for the late Dr. Samuel Newman, a Pediatrician.
She lived in Chapel Hill for 7 years, living with her daughter and for the past two years resided at the Carolina House. She spent many happy hours at the Charles House.
Funeral services will be held at Howerton & Bryan Funeral Chapel at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, Sept. 30. Burial will be at Green Hill Cemetery in Danville, VA at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Bobby Carter Sr.
MATTHEWS, N.C. - Bobby Gene Carter Sr., 67, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at Presbyterian Hospital.
Born March 7, 1932, in Yancey County, Va., he was the son of Allen Carter and Nora Belle Honeycutt Carter. He was married
44 years to Hazel Carter, who survives.
He lived in Charlotte for 44 years, owning Bob's Lawn Mower Repairs for the past 30 years. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Bobby Gene Carter Jr. of Stokesdale, and Ricky Carter of Charlotte; two daughters, Sherry Morrow of Greenwood, S.C., and Lisa Eads of Indian Trail; one brother, Howard Carter of Danville; and six grandchildren. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Sunset Memory Gardens with the Rev. Bobby Helms officiating.
Howard Leff
HIGH POINT, N.C. - Howard Leff, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999.
He was a United States Postal worker in High Point and Oregon for 20 years. He was president of the Letter Carriers Union, Local 936, NALC for 9 years. He served as a member and representative at the Founding Convention of the Labor Party and was an active supporter for social justice and worker's rights. "The Leff Man" also served as a community volunteer for public radio in both Oregon and North Carolina.
In addition to his mother and wife, survivors include three children, brother and sister.
A memorial service will be 1-6 p.m. Sunday at Creekside Park in Archdale. A picnic will follow. Please bring a covered dish.
Wayne Gunn
BURLINGTON, N.C. - Wayne Antonio "Tony" Gunn, 25, of 674 Mitchell St., formerly of Yanceyville, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, as a result of an automobile accident.
Born April 15, 1974, in Danville, Va., he was the son of the Rev. Squire Pettiford Jr. and Ola Mae Gunn.
He joined Tabernacle of Holiness Disciples of Christ in Newark, N.J., at an early age. He attended Bartlett Yancey High School in Yanceyville and was an employee of Johnson Printing Company in Greensboro.
Survivors include his mother of Yanceyville; his father and step-mother, Janet Pettiford, of Greensboro; one daughter, Bria Wilson of Yanceyville; two sons, Wequon Wilson of Yanceyville and Dequan Wilson of Newark, N.J.; four sisters, Sherry R. Pettiford and Tamara Gwynn, both of Yanceyville, Shakia S. Pettiford and Sahara M. Pettiford, both of Greensboro; and his grandmother, Mary Pettiford of Milton.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hamer Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
The Rev. Squire Pettiford Jr. and the Rev. Howard Stanton will officiate.
The family will be at Fulton Funeral Home 7-8 p.m. Monday and at other times at the residence of his aunt, 291 Church St., Yanceyville.
Carl Sutton Jr.
PROSPECT HILL, N.C. - Carl Holt Sutton Jr., 82, of 13404 Route 86 South, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999 at the Brian Center in Yanceyville after several years of declining health.
He was married
to Mary Love Oakes Anderson.
Born in Alamance County, he was the son of Carl Holt Sutton Sr. and Nora Price Sutton. He was the owner and operator of Piedmont Cleaners, and he retired from Sears in 1969. He was a member of Lee Bethel Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II in Italy and North Africa. He was a member of the American Legion Post 447.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Oakes Anderson of the residence; four daughters, Joanna Summers of Beaufort, Martha May of Gibsonville, Judy Wright of Long Beach and Donna Moss of Elon College; one son, Robert H. Sutton Sr. of Burlington; four stepdaughters, Montine Belcher, Janice Brown, Nancy Barton and Nora Hazelwood, all of Danville, Va.; two brothers, Ralph Sutton of Gibsonville and Frank Sutton of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters, Ruth Rich and Ethel McPherson, both of Snow Camp, and Myrtle Walker of Yanceyville; 12 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and four step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents; his first wife, Evella Booth Sutton; and one sister, Alma Moore Gilliam.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Christian Church with the Rev. Dave Gilbert officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
There will be a viewing 30 minutes prior to the service.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Lowe Funeral Home, Burlington, and at other times at the residence.
David Stewart
SEMORA, N.C. - David Stewart, of 3074 Jack Pointer Road, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at LaSalle Health Care Center, Durham.
Born Jan. 14, 1929, in Caswell County, he was the son of Harrison Stewart and Otie Stewart.
Survivors include one son, Douglas Smith of Milton; one daughter, Blondie Henderson of Baltimore; one sister, Lovelene Winstead of the residence; two brothers, Gordon Stewart of the residence and Robert Stewart of Semora, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Olive Baptist Church, with the Rev. P.D. Medley officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
A viewing will be noon-8 p.m. Wednesday at Plenty Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
John Daniel
MADISON, N.C. - John Oliver Daniel, 82, of 2990 Highway 772, died Saturday Oct. 9, 1999, at his residence.
Born in Rockingham County, he was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Ruritan Club for 38 years.
A World War II Army veteran of five years, he was also a retired manager and agent of Peoples Life Insurance Company.
He was married
to Sarah Hazelwood Daniel, who survives, for 52 years.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, John Oliver Daniel Jr. of Portland, Ore. and Kim Shelton Daniel of Eden; three brothers, Bob Daniel of Hampton, Va., Sherman Daniel of Sanford and Grey Daniel of Washington; four sisters, Doris D. Coe, Faye D. Garner and Pat D. Kirby, all of Sanford and Edith D. Slawson of Concord; and two grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethesda United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Colonial Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
Armond Tate
YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Armond Malloy Tate, 64, of 206 Moorefield Road, died Friday Oct. 8, 1999, at his residence.
Born Oct. 5, 1935, in Caswell County, he was the son of Carey Tate and Florence Wimple Tate.
He was employed by Dan River Inc. for many years prior to his retirement.
He was married
to Ollie Pearl Patterson Tate, who survives.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Delores Tate of Danville, Va. and one brother, David Lee Tate of Yanceyville.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m Tuesday at Blackwell Baptist Church with the Rev. Everett Dickerson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Isaac Long
BLANCH, N.C. - Isaac Roy Long, 60, of 733 John Long Road, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, in Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 30, 1938, in Caswell County, he was the son of the late John Henry Long and Annie Mitchell Long.
He was married
to Naomi Smith Long, who survives.
He was a member of High Rock Baptist Church, where he was a trustee, and sang in the senior choir.
He was vice chairman of Caswell County Board of Education, a member of Caswell County Recreation Committee, Caswell County Voters League, Caswell County Branch of the NAACP, Caswell Credit Union, NJROTC Booster Club, North Carolina School Board Association and a former member of Caswell County Violence Committee.
He was founder of the Silver Stars of Blanch, a member of the National Quartets Association, the North Carolina Black Leadership caucus and was a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro.
He was a retired fixer of Goodyear Tire & Rubber, Danville.
In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two sons, Isaac Leo Long of Atlanta, Michael Long of the residence; two daughters, Angela Long of Atlanta, and Veronica Long of the residence; two brothers, Tommy Long and Joseph Long, both of Blanch; and one sister, Ella L. Crutchfield of Semora.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Roosevelt Long, Sidney Long and Simpson Long; and one sister, Vera Long.
A funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Semora, N.C., with the Rev. Robert Broadnax officiating.
Burial will be in High Rock Baptist Church Cemetery, Blanch, N.C.
A viewing will be Wednesday at Fulton Funeral Home, Yanceyville, from 2-8 p.m.
