Roger Meeks

PELHAM, N.C. - Roger Hunt Meeks, 67, of 354 Lovelace Road, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.

Born April 16, 1932, in Rockingham County, he was the son of the late Numa Meeks and Lelia Meeks Meeks.

He was married icon to Nancy Hanks Meeks, who survives.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War.

He spent most of his life in the Pelham community of Caswell County, where he was a member of Pelham United Methodist Church.

He traveled extensively for his job at International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, where he worked as an electrician before retiring six years ago.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Roger Lynn Meeks of Pelham; one daughter, Rhonda Meeks Barlow of Hillsborough; five brothers, Len Meeks of Bridge City, Texas, Charles Meeks of Yanceyville, Raymond Meeks of Newport News, Va. and Marion Meeks and Gary Meeks, both of Pelham; three sisters, Nellie Strader of Pelham, Gloria Bray of Yanceyville and Martha Foster of Ruffin; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pelham United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert E. Fritts officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery where military honors will be performed by the American Legion Memorial Post No. 325 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lovelean Beggarly

EDEN, N.C. - Lovelean Wilson Beggarly, 58, of 1414 E. Stadium Drive, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at her residence.

Born in Rockingham County, she was the daughter of Mary Wilson, who survives.

She was married icon to Carl Beggarly, who also survives.

She was a member of Fair View United Methodist Church in Danville, Va., where she was employed at Dan River Mills.

In addition to her mother of Eden, and husband of the residence, survivors include one son, Rusty Beggarly of Danville, Va.; two daughters, Suzanne Pruitt and Dawn Beggarly, both of Danville, Va.; and nine grandchildren.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Dan View Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Mary Jefferson

PELHAM, N.C. - Mary Abbott Jefferson, 47, of 2174 Red Marshall Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 28, 1951, in Danville, she was the daughter of Noel "Jack" Abbott and Mary Terrell Abbott.

She was married icon to Ronnie Reid Jefferson, who survives.

She was a graduate of George Washington High School. She was employed in the restaurant business for over 20 years and was currently employed at Dan River Mills Inc., in the shipping department. She attended the Salvation Army Church.

In addition to her husband of the residence, survivors include one daughter, Melissa J. Anderson of Dry Fork, Va.; one son, Ronnie W. Jefferson of Danville; one sister, Janice M. Abbott of Brosville, Va.; and one grandchild.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Jones officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Lawrence Stowe

MAIDEN, N.C. - Lawrence Edward Stowe, 83, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at his residence.

Born Aug. 30, 1916, in Dry Fork, Va., Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Henson Craig Stowe and the late Maude Green Stowe.

He was married icon to Betty Roach Stowe, who survives.

He was a retired United States Army veteran of World War II, serving in Korea. He was a member of Living Word Pentecostal Holiness Church, Sunday School Superintendent of Dry Fork Pentecostal Holiness Church where he served on deacon board, conference lifeline board, taught sunday school for 18 years and sang in church choir and a men's quartet.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Robyn Queen of Maiden, Tammy Durden of Greenville, S.C., and Lisa Willis of Danville, Va.; two brothers, Craig Stowe and Rev. Curtis Stowe, both of Danville; two sisters, Vinnie Yeatts and Lillie Yeatts, both of Dry Fork, Va.; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, four brothers and one grandchild.

A funeral was 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14 at Living Word Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Michael Ainsworth and the Rev. Garland Elliott officiating. Burial will be in Maiden City Cemetery.

The family received friends 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, at the church.

There will be a viewing 30 minutes prior to the service.

Burke Mortuaries Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Catherine Coleman

STONEVILLE, N.C. - Catherine McCoy Coleman, of 4160 Price Road, formerly of 208 Barrett St., died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999.

Born May 28, 1922, in Lancaster, S.C., she was the daughter of Eugene McCoy and Katie McCoy.

She married icon Cleveland Edison Coleman, Sr., who predeceased her.

She was educated in Lancaster, S.C., before moving to Danville, Va. She was employed with George Washington High School in the cafeteria. She professed hope in Christ at an early age and joined Wesley Chapel, A.M.E. Zion Church.

Survivors include three sons, Cleveland Coleman, Jr. of Danville, Va., Samuel Coleman Sr., of Stoneville, N.C., and Ira Coleman of Glen Allen, Va.; two daughters Ethyel Coleman of Powhatan, Va. and Tonya Nunnally of Danville, Va.; three sisters Alethia McGriff, Arthur Mae Twitty and Helen Montgomery; one brother James Ruben McCoy; one foster sister Viola Jones; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Donald McCoy officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at 208 Barrett Street.

Dorothy Foster

BEDFORD, N.C. - Dorothy Henderson Foster, 92, of Monroe, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at Oakwood Manor in Bedford.

Born August 12, 1907, in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late William Amherst and Alvertie Powell Henderson.

She was married icon to Robert Percy Foster, who predeceased her.

She was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church, Pleasant View.

Survivors include six sons and one daughter, Robert O. "Jake" Foster of Monroe, James E. Foster of Monoks Corner, S.C., William C. Foster of Baltimore, Md., Aubrey L. Foster of Buena Vista, Cecil W. Foster of Monroe, Kenneth R. Foster of Dry Fork, and Myrtle F. Shaner of Forest; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Whitten Monelison Chapel with Pastor Ken Payne and the Rev. Robert O. Foster officiating. Burial will be in Thornton Family Cemetery, Pera.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of one of her son, Cecil, at 1087 Pera Road, Monroe

Frances Fonville

BURLINGTON, N.C. - Frances Turner Fonville, 93, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after six months of declining health.

Born in Rockingham County, she was the daughter of the late James Henry Turner and Rosa Wheeler Turner.

She was married icon to Rudy M. Fonville, who predeceased her.

She was a school teacher. She was a member of the First Prebyterian Church of Burlington, former Sunday school teacher, member of Women of the Church- Honorary Life member. She was a also member of the Garden Lovers Club, the Belle Lettre Book Club, Recipient of the United States Treasury Award for Patriotic Services, 1942-1944. She served on the board of directors of the United Way, Honorary member of the Service League of Alamance County, member of the Elon College Presidential board of Advisors, and served on the Alamance County Hospital Auxiliary.

Survivors include one sister, Pearle T. Womble of Danville.

She was predeceased by one son, Rudy M. "Pete" Fonville.

A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Pine Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Genie Martin officiating.

The family will receive friends 1:30-2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Session Room at First Presbyterian Church and at other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Womble, 364 West Lake Trail, Mebane.

Rich and Thompson Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Ernest Jones

BURLINGTON, N.C. - Ernest Jones, 85, of 1108 Welch St., died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1999, at his residence after two years of failing and three days of critical health.

Born in Chatham, Va., he was the son of Alc Jones and Lelia Shelton Jones.

He was married icon to Mary Shelton Jones, who survives.

He was a retired supervisor with Burlington Industries. He was a member of Glen Hope Baptist Church where he was a member of the Gold Star Sunday School class.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Jeanette J. Andrews of Graham, and Sue J. Allison of Kure Beach; one brother, Alvin Jones of Danville, Va.; three sisters, Doris Steele, Mae Compton, both of Danville, Va., and Alice Lawhorn of Covington, Va.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Glen Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Stephenson and the Rev. D.W. Smith, officiating. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday at McClure Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Curley New

RUFFIN, N.C. - Randall "Curley" Travis New, 69, of 272 Old U.S. Hwy 29, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, after a four-day stay at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been on disability for seven years.

Born Dec. 7, 1929, in Lithonia, Ga., he was the son of the late Roy Johnson and Viola Casey New Gauldin. He was the stepson of Grace Johnson, who survives.

He married icon Mamie Gauldin New, who also survives.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during the Korean Conflict. He spent most of his life in the Ruffin community. He was owner and operator of the New Family Restaurant on Riverside Drive for 17 years, and a member of True Gospel Baptist Church.

In addition to his stepmother of Danville and wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Deborah Harvey of Statesville, Beverly Davis of Danville, Va., and Nancy Brown of Reidsville; one half brother, William New of Danville, Va.; two half sisters, Mildred Hathaway and Marie Cook, both of Danville, Va.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one brother Robert New and one sister, Rachel Smith.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at True Gospel Baptist Church with the Rev. Hubert Inman and the Rev. Cletus Grubbs officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post No. 325 honor guard. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Cleavie Holloway

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Cleavie D. Holloway, of 833 Purley Church Road, died Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center, Danville, Va.

Born Aug. 8, 1927, in Caswell County, she was the daughter of Americus and Lucy Henderson Holloway.

She was a member of Sassafras Grove Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Usher Board and Missionary Circle at the church. She was a member Estelle Circle No. 647 O.E.S.

She was retired from Caswell County School cafeteria.

Survivors include one daughter, Lucy H. Johnson of Yanceyville; two sons, Marion Holloway of Reidsville and Donald Holloway of Yanceyville; two sisters, Lethanel H. Gwynn of Yanceyville and Janie H. McIver of Fayetteville; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Sassafras Grove Baptist Church with Dr. H.R. Surgeon officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body may be viewed 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Fulton Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.
