Karlee Drake

BURLINGTON, N.C. - Karlee Denise Drake, 18, of 5136 Daily Store Road died May 23, 2000, in Mebane.

Born in Hertford, N.C., she was a daughter of Carlton Drake and Greer Denise Carter Drake.

She was a full-time student at Eastern Alamance High School. She was attending ACC for pre-child psychology, and was an employee of Eastlawn Baptist Church. She was a member of Parrish Chapel United Church of Christ, and was involved with the Pals Club.

In addition to her mother of the home and her father of Virginia, survivors include one brother, Mark D. Carter of Danville, Va.; two sisters, Simone Taveres of Dover, N.H. and Kristen Drake of Danville, Va.

A funeral was held at noon, May 27, 2000, at Blackwell Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Harold Garner officiating.

Visitation was held one hour prior to service.

Blackwell Funeral Home, Burlington, N.C., was in charge of arrangements.

Cody Chaney

BLANCH, N.C. - Cody Chaney, of 2206 Blanch Road, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at his residence after a long period of declining health.

Born Jan. 21, 1928 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Raleigh T. and Sallie Shaw Chaney.

He was married icon to Lula Slade Chaney, who survives. He was a graduate of Dan River High School, a retired electrician and tile layer, a member of Purley United Methodist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

In addition to his wife of the residence, he is survived by one daughter, Connie Frances Chaney, also of the residence; one son, Allen Chaney of Roxboro, N.C.; one sister, Delma Haley of Danville; and one grandson.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from Purley United Methodist Church, with Dr. Floyd Morrow, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery, with military rites given by American Legion Post 1097.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Harrelson Funeral Home, Yanceyville, N.C.

Virginia Waynick

REIDSVILLE, N.C. - Virginia Daniel Waynick, 80, of 1309 Richardson Dr. died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.

Born in Person County, she was a daughter of Hubert James and Wilma Connally Daniel.

She was married icon to James F. "Jimmy" Waynick, who survives. She had lived in Reidsville since the early 1940's and was a charter member of Woodmont United Methodist Church. She was an award-winning artist and was a member and longtime treasurer of the Studio Group of Rockingham County. She was also a member of The Greensboro Artist's League, Associated Artists of Winston-Salem, a charter member of Women of the Arts, Washington, The Danville Art League and the High Point Art Guild.

She was predeceased by two brothers, James W. Daniel and Edwin Daniel, and two sisters, Nannie Mae Daniel and Helen D. Benson.

In addition to her husband of the home, survivors include one son, James Fletcher Waynick Jr. of Reidsville; two daughters, Betty J. Waynick of Chapel Hill and Joan M. Waynick of Arlington, Va.; one brother, Hubert James Daniel of Pelham and one sister, Anna D. Smith of Yanceyville.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Greenview Cemetery.

The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Citty Funeral Home, and will receive friends other times at the residence.

Mary Pointer

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Mary Helen Pointer died Monday, June 5, 2000, at the Brian Center in Yanceyville.

Born Feb. 1, 1916 in Person County, she was the daughter of W.W. Pointer and Luna Allen Pointer.

Prior to her retirement, she was a school teacher for the City of Danville for 40 years.

She was predeceased by four brothers, W.W. Pointer Jr., Allen B. Pointer, Carl H. Pointer and Cecil Pointer; and one sister, Virginia Soloman.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday from Birchwood Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Hillman officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Townes Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence of Bill Pointer, Hwy. 119N., Semora, N.C.

John Smith

GIBSONVILLE, N.C. - John "Johnny" Clifton Smith, 63, of 648 Browns Chapel Road, died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.

He was born Aug. 26, 1936, in Caswell County.

He was married icon to Patsy Gwynn Allmond Smith, who survives. He was a retired landscaping businessman, and a member of Oakview Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Sherrie Strader of Ruffin, and Penny Wilson of Reidsville; one son, Greg Smith of Idaho; two sisters, Brenda Holt of Reidsville and Doris Nixon of Yanceyville; five brothers, Allen Smith and Cecil Smith, both of Yanceyville, James Donald Smith and Ralph Gary Smith, both of Burlington and Kenneth Smith of Reidsville; and seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral was held 2 p.m. Tuesday from Oakview Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Bob Hillman officiated. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Marley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Johnnie H. McDowell

PROVIDENCE, N.C. - Johnnie H. McDowell, age 73, of 3709 Shady Grove Road, Providence, North Carolina, died Tuesday afternoon June 6, 2000 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a one day stay in the hospital.

Mr. McDowell was born in Caswell County, North Carolina on March 31, 1927, a son of the late Gilbert H. McDowell and Ruby Hudson McDowell.

He married icon Juanita Brown McDowell on June 29, 1949, who survives.

Mr. McDowell was a veteran of the U.S. Army and had spent most of his life in the Shady Grove Road Community of Caswell County, North Carolina. He was the co owner of McDowell's Store in the Gatewood community until he retired. He had been a faithful member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church since early childhood where he taught Sunday School, served as superintendent of Sunday School, Lay Reader, served on the Board of Trustees, choir member, and treasurer of the United Methodist Men. He was also a delegate to the United Methodist Annual Conference.

Survivors in addition to his wife of the residence include two daughters: Diane McDowell Foster and her husband John L. Foster, Ringgold, and Patricia McDowell Moshenek and her husband Bill Moshenek, Jr., Providence, North Carolina, and one brother: Harvey H. McDowell of Providence, North Carolina, and two sisters: Anne M. Clayton and Elsie M. Carroll both of Providence, North Carolina, and three grandchildren: Matthew B. Foster, Benjamin C. Foster, and Jennifer A. Peters.

He was predeceased by four brothers, Vernon F. McDowell, Herbert L. McDowell, James W. McDowell, and Raymond L. McDowell.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Shady Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Richard Matthews. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. The family received friends at the church on Thursday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 P.M., and at the residence at other times. Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shady Grove United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 155, Providence, N.C. 27315.

Hattie Campbell

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. -Hattie Edwards Campbell, 84, of 2920 George Russell Road died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at her residence after a period of declining health.

Born June 23, 1915, in Caswell County, she was a daughter of Charlie Edwards and Rosa Gooch Edwards.

She was married icon to David J. Campbell, who predeceased her Dec. 28, 1996. She was educated in Caswell County schools and was a homemaker. She was a member of Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Ann Paschal of Ruffin, Jane Shoemaker of Reidsville, Faye Barts of Blanch, and Wilma Gauldin of Prospect Hill; six sons, Joseph "Joe" Campbell of the residence, Daniel Campbell of Graham, Charlie Campbell of Elon College, and Allen, Eugene and Edgar Campbell, all of Burlington; 24 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two daughters, Florina Campbell King and Mozelle Campbell.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Church with the Elder Wallis Smith officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Harrelson Funeral Home.

Joseph Walker

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Joseph D. Walker, 90, of the Brian Center Nursing Home and formerly of 15 Webster Road died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at the Brian Center Nursing Home.

Born Feb. 28, 1910, in Caswell County, he was a son of Mitchell Walker and Bettie Brashel Walker.

He was married icon to Gertrude Daye Walker, who predeceased him. He was a member of Providence Baptist Church and was a trustee. He was a farmer before retirement.

Survivors include one stepdaughter, Leadore Daye of Mebane.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Providence Baptist Church with the B.R. Inge officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

A viewing will be held from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at Fulton Funeral Home, Yanceyville, N.C.

Henry Walters

PURLEY, N.C. - Henry Thomas Walters, 71, of 103 Woods Farm Road died Monday, May 12, 2000, at his residence.

Born Feb. 22, 1929, in Caswell County, he was a son of Weathers Walters and Helena Bigelow Walters.

He was married icon to Alphonsia Hunt Walters, who survives. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and was employed with Dan River Mills before retirement.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include eight sons, Richard Walters and Ricky Walters, both of Danville, Va., Lea Walters of Pelham, Robert Walters of Yanceyville, Leon Walters and Thomas Walters, both of Milton, John Lewis Walters of Washington, and Rex Walters of Colorado Springs, Col.; one sister, Nannie Mae Henderson of Baltimore; two brothers, William Edward Walters of Winston-Salem and Harvey Lewis Walters of Danville, Va., and 10 grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Providence, with interment following in the church cemetery.

A viewing will be held from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Fulton Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Henry Christian Zenke II

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Henry Christian Zenke II of Greensboro, N.C., died at his home on Saturday, June 17, 2000. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 20th at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 607 North Greene St. in Greensboro, N.C. Interment will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Zenke is survived by his wife of 48 years, Virginia Ford Zenke; a daughter, Virginia Hawthorne Zenke and a son, Henry Christian Zenke III, all of Greensboro.

Memorials, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 607 N. Greene St., Greensboro, N.C. 27401 or Preservation Greensboro-Blandwood Mansion, 447 W. Washington St., Greensboro, N.C. 27401.
